October 2010 It has been my pleasure to serve as your President this past year, and I have enjoyed meeting many of you for the first time. I appreciate all of your help and support throughout the year, and I would encourage all of you to become more active in your association, and become involved in the development of our future goals. Next month, the newsletter will come to you from your 2010-2011 AMCA President, Michael Barry, President of Twin City Fan Companies, Inc. Ltd. This past year has been a challenge for most of us, but I am happy to report that in spite of one of the worst economic times in our history, your association remains financially and member strong. In fact, our membership is growing here in North America because of increased AMCA specification requirements in new construction as well as internationally with the growing requirements in the Far East and Middle East markets. Our Singapore and Korean Independent Accredited Laboratories are up and running, generating a steady stream of revenue, and our AMCA Headquarter Laboratory in Chicago continues to see an upswing of testing from our North American members. We continue to have great depth of leadership on the AMCA Board as well as a hard working and dedicated staff at headquarters in Chicago. 2010 Annual Meeting Thursday October 14th kicked off this years meeting with Board of Directors, Committee, and Division meetings, all region meeting along with two Educational Sessions; the first session was a presentation regarding “The New Normal: Positioning Your Value in the Marketplace Through Technology” presented by Paul Doherty, Senior Vice President of Screampoint, The second session was a presentation by Hans Zigmund, Economist for the Illinois Department of Revenue, Hans gave a detailed presentation on the economic outlook for 2010 - 2011. Thursday evening started with the First Timers Orientation where AMCA Acting Executive Director, Mark Stevens, gave an overview of the association, membership, CRP and introduced AMCA Staff. The attendees also viewed the AMCA Corporate DVD/ Video, giving them a better understanding of what AMCA is all about. Then, members, guests and staff were off to enjoy the Cuban and South Beach influenced Welcome Reception/Dinner for an evening of good food, friends, and salsa dancing! Friday morning we were back at it with Division Meetings, and then most of the attendees spent the afternoon attending Tours, Golf, or Tennis. The afternoon’s events included a friendly competition and fun at the Men’s and Ladies Golf Tournament, and the annual Mixed Tennis Tourney. Also included, an additional tour; a Catamaran Cruise along Florida’s Coast with manatee sightings and beautiful views. A technical paper entitled “External Shading Devices in Commercial Buildings”

AMCA International collaborated with John Carmody and Kerry Haglund from the Center for Sustainable building Research at the University of Minnesota to develop the technical publication detailing the benefits of sunshade devices (louvers). AMCA International’s Standard 530 com-

mittee members provided input and guidance to the publication.

External Shading Devices in Commercial Buildings is published by AMCA International and is available for download on the AMCA website at www.amca.org.

AMCA publishes English version of Author Alain Guédel’s, “Acousitique des ventilateurs” (Fan Acoustics-Noise Generation and Control Methods);

CETIAT a not- for- profit industrial technical center located in Villeur-banne Cedex, France, has granted AMCA International full publishing rights for the English version of Alain Guédel’s work entitled “Acousitique des ventilateurs.”(Fan Acoustics-Noise Generation and Control Meth-ods.) AMCA International White Paper, Fan Industry - Facing up to the Energy ChallengesThis Paper is about how, not why. We want to share with you how the fan industry is participating in finding the ways to improve energy use of fans.More than fifty years ago, the industry formed the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA); now AMCA International. Right from the start AMCA implemented a Certified Rating Program for fan performance. Certified fan performance was accepted instantly by the HVAC industry in the U.S. and Canada. As AMCA spread outside of North America and became AMCA International, so too did the acceptance of AMCA certified performance of fans in other regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, and India.To download Fan Industry - Facing up to the Energy Challenges, visit www.amca.org
