C A N T O R ’ S C O R N E R

What a great start we had this year!

Although the holidays seemed to take everyone

by surprise by starting so early in September, the great

preparation that went in to making the Days of Awe a

truly unforgettable experience at Temple Beth Am was

noticed by everyone. From the Ritual Committee,

under co-chairs Joyce Marlin and Renee Grasso, that

worked tirelessly to ensure the mailing of the tickets

and many other logistic parts of the High Holidays; and

the ushers, under the leadership of Steve Beloff,

whose welcoming sets the mood for all the guests; to

the Beautification Committee, under the supervision of

Dana Sobel and Ruth Hochman, that made Temple

Beth Am look beautiful inside and out; and to all the

people behind the scenes: Marc Colton, Howard Vex,

Ron Serafin and Shalene Tannu.

My special gratitude to the people who worked

intensely over the summer on the wonderful music that

is so different on the High Holidays. Our Temple Beth

Am choir, which grew so much over the last few

months, made us all very proud. The following people

sang at the High Holiday services: Alan Bogart,

Elizabeth Borow, Jackie Burge, Nancy Crandall, Kathy

Decker, Sheldon Eichenbaum, Cy Friedman, Bruce

Goldman, Laura Gurth, Rebecca Jurow, Linda Kay,

Bayla Kolton, Maxine and Gene Lee, Steve Lessick,

Robert Lowy and Rose Ann Zaloshinsky. David

Goodstein was also going to participate, but unfortu-

nately was unable to do so due

to family circumstances. The

members of the choir gave up

numerous evenings with their families, as well as the

pleasure of sitting with their families during the servic-

es. Iouri’s creativity once again added new melodies

to the service. I also want to thank the instrumentalists,

professional and volunteers, who participated at the

services: Adrian Daurov (cello), Merinda Adams

(harp), Jacob Rudolph (trumpet), Renee Brandler

(clarinet) and Wendy Livingston (flute).

Barrie Halpern, our education director, was in

charge of the youth services, and made them so very

special this year to all the youngsters who attended

the services.

The rabbi’s sermons were very inspiring and

thought-provoking. He never ceases to surprise us

with the spins he puts on different subjects.

Alan Sobel, our temple president, clearly puts his

whole heart and mind into any Temple Beth Am affair

and is always a pleasure to share a bima with.

I am sure that the good feelings that we still carry

after the last shofar blast is sounded will remain

throughout the year.

I hope that all of you will also come and celebrate

Simchat Torah, when we unroll the Torah scroll, and

that each of you will be able to view all five books and

listen to the excerpts of the ancient teaching.

As I write this article, I had just completedthe halfway point of the High Holidaymarathon. Rosh Hashanah had just

become a fading memory as we moved forward to thecelebration of Yom Kippur. I must tell you that partici-pating during all four Rosh Hashanah services wastruly an exhilarating experience.

Many of our outstanding leaders received hon-ors during Rosh Hashanah and many more werecalled upon during Yom Kippur. But of all the honorsgiven out during the High Holidays, I was privilegedwith the greatest honor of all, the honor of addressingthe entire congregation as your president.

In preparing the Rosh Hashanah speech, Iwanted it to be real special for all of you. Because thiswas the first time many of you had the opportunity tohear my voice, I wanted my words to be meaningfuland I wanted to make a positive first impression.Based on the generous feedback I received, I believemy objectives were achieved.

But my real goal was much more than to makea good first impression; my real goal was to motivateour Temple Beth Am membership into action.Because, without action, my words will becomemeaningless. Without action, my words will becomean empty promise.

During my address, I asked you to “considerhow you can help make a difference in ensuring ourTemple Beth Am future is bright.” I asked thisbecause, now more than ever, our congregation

needs each and every mem-ber’s help. There are a multi-tude of ways that you canmake a positive difference forour congregation—all you have to do is start byspeaking up. I would like to offer you the opportunityto do so.

As part of our strategic plan, we will be organiz-ing several small neighborhood parlor meetings at fel-low members’ homes for you to participate in. It is ourhope to get as many of you to come and share youropinions on what we can do to make the temple morerelevant for you and your children. We want you tohelp us define a Temple Beth Am value propositionthat works for you.

With more than 200 member units representingapproximately 600 people, we have a great opportu-nity to provide diverse and meaningful prayer, educa-tion, networking, socializing and tzedakah programs. But as I expressed in my Rosh Hashanah speech, itcan’t happen unless you can find the time to makeyour Reform Jewish community a priority in your lives. At a minimum I ask that you at least make one of ourparlor meetings a priority to participate in.

The Religious School has gotten off to a terrific start!

We have more than 120 students in gradesKindergarten through 10th grade. We welcome all thenew members to our “temple family.” We also welcomefour new teachers this year, Dawn Abraham, LynnCutler, Randi Elkin and Ilisia Kissner, as well as ourreturning teachers Lisa Margolis, Millie and Joel Lipkin,Heather Schweizer, Fariba Mahgerefteh and CantorInna. Rabbi Kaplan, Jackie Burge and I are teachingthe Confirmation Academy.

I am very excited to tell you about an extremelyspecial addition to our faculty. Her name is Michal Kfir,a teenager from Ra’anana, Israel, who finished highschool and is spending a year in America. Michal wasborn in America and actually lived in Parsippany untilher parents moved to Israel when she was a child.Michal is part of the Shaliach emissary program spon-sored by the Israel Program Center of the UnitedJewish Communities. Michal will be spending at least15 days with us this year planning unique and creativeprograms for our children. This exciting addition to ourcurriculum will make Israel come alive to our boys andgirls by allowing them the opportunity to get to knowsomeone from Israel personally.

The new High Holy Day programs we estab-lished this year were a big success. The younger stu-dents enjoyed celebrating the High Holy Days by par-ticipating in the “High Holy Day Experience” with funcrafts and games, while the older students took part ina special Junior Congregation, with a wonderful song

leader, Eric Tapper, adding tothe ruach, spirit, of the holi-day.

Our children celebratedthe next Tishrei holiday, Sukkot, by making decorationsfor the Sukkah. In addition, each class visited theSukkah and had the chance to perform the mitzvah ofshaking the lulav and etrog.

This month is Simchat Torah, the holiday whenwe finish reading the Torah and begin reading it again. It is a very special holiday for our new Religious Schoolstudents, who will participate in a consecration cere-mony, a service in which the children commemoratebeginning their Jewish education at our temple. Eachparticipant will receive a special gift of a small Torah aswell as something sweet to symbolize the sweetnessof learning.

Our Jewish Book Fair starts on Tuesday, October12, and continues until October 17. There will be a vari-ety of books for children of all ages ranging in pricefrom a few dollars to approximately $20. The studentswill have the opportunity to go to the book fair with theirclass, or you are welcome to stop by the fair before orafter school with your child.

This month ends with a special new initiative atTemple Beth Am. The Hey class (seventh graders) isleading a Shabbat morning service on October 30 inpreparation for when the students will become Bar orBat Mitzvahs. In the past, all of the class services havebeen on a Friday night. Some children have neverattended a Saturday morning Shabbat service andwon’t until they become Bar or Bat Mitzvahs them-selves. We believe that this wonderful service opportu-nity will help the Hey class students feel more comfort-able and knowledgeable on their special simcha, happy occasion.

S I S T E R H O O D

Iwant to start off by thanking Marcia Mauro,

Marilyn Beloff, Nancy Crandall, Heather

Schweizer, Randi Foster, Rhonda Jacoby,

Andrea Jacoby, Dana Sobel, Becky Sobel, Sarah

Sobel and Ellie Hockstein for their help shopping, set-

ting up, preparing and serving food for the Tashlich

luncheon, Religious School breakfast and the Break-

fast nosh on Yom Kippur. I want to thank Dana Sobel

for baking more than 200 great-tasting honey breads

for the congregation and zucchini breads for the Break-

fast nosh. As always our thanks go to Marc Colton and

Ron Serafin for always being such a big help to the

Sisterhood. Volunteers are imperative to the success

of all of our events. Please join Sisterhood this year

and help support our religious, social and community

service events that we have planned.

Our next open board meeting is October 7 at 7:30

p.m. Please bring a friend to the meeting to help grow

our Sisterhood. You do not need to be a member of the

temple to be a Sisterhood member. All of our meet-

ings are the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 and

everyone is welcome.

Please make sure to send in your payment for

Sisterhood membership as soon as possible. As of

mid-September we had 70-plus members out of 220

families.

We hope to have every woman in our congregation

join Sisterhood this year.

Tuesday, October 12, is our first Ladies Nite

Out/Vendor Sale. Please come and shop from 6 to 9

p.m. We have approximately 20 vendors with a variety

of merchandise for you to choose from. What a perfect

time to buy some presents for the holidays. If you are

able to help set up or clean up at the end of the

evening, please let Heather Schweizer know.

We are starting a beginner Mah Jongg program

twice a month on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Each table will

have an expert Mah Jongg player at it who will be

teaching everyone how to play. The cost is $5 per per-

son. Everyone must register by October 7 to play.

These games will be held on October 19, November 9

and 16, and December 14 and 21. If you are an expert

and would like to be part of this new venture, please

contact me. Also, if you have card tables that we could

borrow, please let me know. We will need to know in

advance if you need a Mah Jongg card (you will need

one to play). The cards are $8 and we have to order

them two weeks in advance.

For any information on any of our events, please

contact me at 201-247-6238.

sasha Rose Baron will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on

October 9. Sasha is the daughter of Deb Hauss and Dave Baron.

Sasha is an eighth grader at Lazar Middle School in Montville where

she is known for her individuality, charisma and artistic abilities. Sasha’s school

activities include singing in the chorus, performing in musicals and participat-

ing in the art club. She does ceramics and throws pots at a local studio. She is

a fan of technology and loves working with computers, iPods, iPhones, iPads

or iAnything. Sasha’s latest passion is Anime, a Japanese style of colorful ani-

mation, found in books, videos and music. Because of her interest, she is

teaching herself Japanese.

For her Mitzvah project, Sasha has chosen to collect food and toys for the

dozens of kittens housed at the Montville Township Animal Rescue Center.

Kittens require a little more tender loving care and special food. Plus, whenever one is adopted, it takes its toys

along. Sasha’s collection box is in the temple lobby and the congregation’s help is greatly appreciated.

B A T M I T Z V A HA L L I S O N J U N G R O S S

Allison Jun Gross will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on

Saturday, October 16. She is the daughter of Susan and Ian

Gross and big sister to Ben. Allie is an honor student in the eighth

grade at Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville. She’s been a Montville

Broncos cheerleader since the third grade and is looking forward to her “varsi-

ty” year. Allie is a roller coaster fanatic who also enjoys fashion design, skiing

and dancing and cherishes her summers at URJ Camp Harlam and Holt

Adoptee Camp.

Allie’s Mitzvah project supports “Light Gives Heat,” an organization that

was born from a couple’s desire to benefit the birth country of their children

through a number of projects that support the economic stability and sustain-

ability of the people there—fusing hope through fashion. The Suubi (hope)

project supports 125-plus Ugandan women (with 900 immediate family mem-

bers) who create and sell recycled paper-beaded necklaces to provide the

income needed for food and school fees for their families. Over the past few months Allie has been selling the beau-

tiful Suubi necklaces. All of the proceeds from the sales of the necklaces go back to the organization, which sends

100 percent of the proceeds directly to the women who crafted them.

I sincerely hope that President Obama andSecretary of State Hillary Clinton, together with otherworld leaders, will continue to pledge their full efforts insupporting these credible positions. Our voices, aswell, need to be heard in order to offer nonpartisanidentification with America's strongest, most loyal, lib-eral ally in the region.

In this New Year, 5771, may we continue toembody the eternal principles of love for Israel, AhavatYisrael, and pursuers of peace, Rodef Shalom.
