As we count down to Canada’s 150th anniversary, you can follow some fun facts about Canada’s rich history.

February 3, 1916A fire breaks out in the Centre Block of Canada’s Parliament Buildings. Seven people lose their lives in the blaze. The most likely cause of the fire is an unextinguished cigar discarded in a wastebasket. The Library of Parliament is saved by an alert employee who closes the library’s iron fire doors.3 février 1916Un incendie se déclare dans l’édifice du Centre du Parlement canadien. February 15, 1965For the first time, the new Canadian flag goes up the flagpole on the Peace Tower at Ottawa’s Parliament Buildings. RCMP Cst. Joseph Secours raises the Maple Leaf in place of the Red Ensign, which was Canada’s flag from 1868 to 1965. Ever since, February 15 has been known as Flag Day in Canada.15 février 1965

From the desk of our General Manager

March brings a “spring in our step” and it is time to let the snow melt and to put away outdoor holiday decorations. Residents are looking forward to the long walks in Maplewood’s front and back gardens.

Staff are looking forward to the events being organized outside for our residents; upcoming gardening, BBQ’s and lots of spring and summer fun. A very exciting event in March will be our 2  nd    Annual Maplefest    with the same band we had last year and a Sugar Bush theme. Please invite your friends to share that sweet taste of Canadian maple with you.

At Maplewood, we are all about healthy lifestyle and our Maplewood Fitness Club has lots to offer:

As many of you had noticed, we now have an additional 2 exercise classes on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. This brings our total up to 10 different time slots per week for residents to join either a standing or seated exercise class. On top of that, we are continuing with all other favourite programs, such as, Yoga, Nordic pole walking, Tai chi, to name the few.

The Falls Prevention initiatives at Maplewood that we have discussed at our last Residents Meeting are underway! In conjunction with the Champlain LHIN, CCAC and Algonquin College, Maplewood is part of several Falls Prevention initiatives. One of them is a QTUG pilot where 50 of our residents are being tested for falls prediction and frailty levels. The other one will be through a research pilot project conducted by Algonquin College students which will contribute to the reduction of falls for seniors.

Thank you for completing our Residents Satisfaction survey, you have rated our staff and services exceptionally high. We have also heard that residents would like to have some more food varieties and healthier choices. Our Executive Chef and our kitchen staff are working hard on implementing your suggestions.

Have a healthy and active springtime at our beautiful Maplewood!
