Today’s society is in much cultural confusion, the plan of the enemy of our soul to destroy the balance between men and women is succeeding. Men are

succumbing of their responsibilities at home and women are desperately frustrated. No matter how these roles are confounding us, the definite solution is to go back to basics by understanding the functions laid out from the very beginning that men and women are equal in every way but have different task given by God. We all have been assigned with purposes to fulfill in this earth for His kingdom.

Orchestrated by God alone LA Pinoy Magazine partnered with RBM to a multi-million dollar recording contract with Manny Pacquiao, Lito Camo and Isaac Reain to record the first two singles due for international release immediately.

LA Pinoy is in much the same circumstance standing on a crossroad facing economic uncertainties, We could have shrunk back and waited until a better financial time will come to launch projects but we know the only security found is in the hands of the one who holds the future. God has laid us to“step up” and “step out” for He has great things in store for LA Pinoy Magazine in the coming months and years. We will continue to grow in our vision expanding our media presence to impact our culture during these troubling times and pandemonium.

LA Pinoy invites you to step into a constructive thoughtfulness for the future.

It is with much gratitude this month that God can produce good even from the worst circumstances. He compels us to make right choices through new found friends, pleasant discipline and trusting His presence in all situations. Instead of dwelling

on what we have lost – a painful consequence of a ready, open and loose administration, we are taught to focus on blessings and learn something out of the mistakes we made to better ourselves and continue to help others. The healing process is always easy because LA Pinoy Magazine always seek for the good no matter how costly was the result that created a dismal rundown on our budget. He has always been faithful in providing added strength which enables us to overcome adversities and move ahead with assurance and new boldness in the course of time. We have weathered all kinds of storms sailing its way to fulfill its mission. We are surrounded with people of faith helping genuinely and moving forward even stronger than before to accomplish the task assigned to us.

Orchestrated by God’s leading and confirmation, LA Pinoy Magazine partnered with RBM Group Int’l trusting His perfect choice and direction - and together will walk in the center of His will.

LA Pinoy Magazine developed a passion for music and guitar, happen to coincide with a growing interest in the recording business. LA Pinoy Magazine is tremendously favored with three colossal talents “a marquee trio”, - Manny Pacquiao a champion and a mogul in the boxing arena, Lito Camo a towering figure pursuing excellence and Isaac Reain a music genius destined to accomplish extraordinary things and will achieve greatness as God sees it. I truly believe that His power reigns in this venture. They will comprise our first major project to be launched in the coming month. This leaves LA PinoyMagazine with such marquee names where success suit their characters well.

LA PinoyMagazine is forever grateful and admires great friends who are truly the MVP’s in all categories.

FOCUS ON BLESSINGS

Page 8: October 2009

8 OCTOBERlapinoymagazine.com2009

I n the never ending c r u s a d e f o r a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s , each boy or girl,

man or woman sets a convincing target to continue a life-long journey, seeking for that feeling of belonging – and maybe is just within reach or a few steps ahead. Everyone is in search for success, satisfaction and recognition.

Manny Pacquiao, Lito Camo and Isaac Reain look like ordinary boys with faithful and kind faces – but becoming the epitome of the young generation executives playing with big toys.

Isaac Reain has the simplicity of seeing things clearly. He has the enablement of bringing his imagination into captivity in the obedience of his spiritual make-up which brings tremendous inspiration in his music. Isaac remembers having less than three square meals a day, living in welfare, and a small bathroom shared with other siblings. Growing in a small community in Montague

going to church must be a luxury. “My mother did not take us to church maybe because we have no proper Sunday clothes but I snuck scrupulously to church anyway. God has always been more real to me than anyone I see… even at age three, I experienced Him very vividly”, he remarked. His heart goes for his lyrics, maintains a grateful attitude and realizing the hope he has in spite of them – the mark of a man who would soon be a figure.

Lito Camo on the other hand is a simple kid exuding with talent with the ability to turn a complex note to a simple chord with profound impact to his fans. He gained the respect of his peers and need not to prove anything when it comes to being a music icon. He often thought of his humble beginnings which kept him rooted firmly in the ground. “Mindoro was not an easy place to grow up”, said Lito unassumingly. “When I was a young boy my day would often start at dawn where I had to work hard to help my family put food on the table”, he added. . These memories were kept in his mind which inspired him to help every boy and girl in

his hometown and founded trade schools and scholarship funds for the unfortunate. “Lito is subdued and thoughtful rather than outspoken and colorful”, said Tito Jing Oliva, his trusted uncle and friend.

Talking about a young boy, growing up in a small town, pressing his nose against a window pane who came to be the greatest boxer of all times pound for pound and acquired tremendous fame and power, now holding the world by the tail –is Manny Pacquiao. He is easily put on a pedestal by his close friends surrounding him. He is described as the most generous and forgiving person on the planet earth, the characteristic of a man of God’s own heart. When we visited him at his house, I observed the standing attention of his friends. They showed impartial contentment continuously, enjoying his enormous presence and genuine servility. Just like watching a movie, Manny’s outfit is like “the system”. He protects his friends and whoever tries to break the system becomes “the victim”. He

dislikes greed and dishonesty and always safeguarding peace and fairness.

The music industry has had its feel of cowboys – what it needs now are not presumptuous visionaries but calm, natural and analytical men… and Pacquiao, Camo and Reain, fit that mode.

Three young artists who see the world like little children... have they found the secret? Inspiration became as clear as the daylight and no account for muddling – and that what keeps them simple but dangerous.

Pacquiao, Camo or Reain, each has a clear focus and not even a quarter century of wilderness’ wandering was enough to distract or discourage their visions. Each man waited for years for the fulfillment of his dreams. What’s the key to their “distinguished places?”

They never lose hope… They never stop dreaming… They never doubted God’s leading…

WINNIPEG’SRoutes on the RED RIVER

travel

By: Barbara Singer

It’s fall, a great time to travel! Why not visit Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada? Winnipeg has been described as a “cultural cradle of Canada” offering talent artists, musicians and athletes, legendary festivals and cultural activities. Winnipeg has the lure of water and the mysteries of the historical Routes on the Red; it’s a city filled with stories of its early Red River settlements, fur traders and a bounty of arts and culture. It is the capital and largest city of Manitoba, Canada.

Although the temperatures can become extreme, Winnipeg is generally a sunny city. The focus

of the city is The Forks, at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, one of the most exciting areas of the city. It’s a historical site with a marketplace and spirit of entertainment with opportunities galore for dining, shopping, concerts, and one-of-a-kind shops. A whirlwind riverboat trip on the Splash Dash Waterbus provides a wondrous perspective to view the city, landscape and lifestyle while relaxing.

Here the historic French Quarter’s St.Boniface Church is the city’s historic church; with its cemetery as the final resting place of Manitoba’s founder and leader Louis Riel.

ATTRACTS FALL VISITORS

Winnipeg’s history evolved as a fur-trading stop for the Hudson Bay Company and the Red River Settlement, which was named Winnipeg in 1870 and the capital of the new province of Manitoba.

The Filipino presence in Manitoba is a part of the province’s history, since 1959 the influx of families, skilled workers, recruits and immigrants has been fast growing. The very active Philippine Canadian Center of Manitoba is located at 737 Keewatin Street, Winnipeg, telephone 204-775-4928, [email protected]. Winnipeg has become one of the principal centers of Filipino immigration to Canada; it is home to Canada’s third largest Filipino population. Approximately 30,000 people have immigrated to Winnipeg from the Philippines.

Many Filipino immigrants settled in Winnipeg seeking their friends and family already there, which evolved in the present Filipino community. For decades the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (www.PHCM.ca) has ensured that Philippine traditions have been maintained in Canada. Winnipeg’s Filipino population is one of the largest in North America. Winnipeg was selected as a stop on the world tour of Wowowee, a hit Filipino TV show, because of its large Filipino community in September 2008. Many Filipinos in Winnipeg work in nursing healthcare sector.

There’s something for everyone in Winnipeg from eclectic eateries to the diversity of lodging like The Forks Hotel over looking the river, The Fairmont Winnipeg, the Fort Garry, Delta Winnipeg- all upscale to budget at the downtown Radisson, walking distance to shopping and transportation. There are

unique museums and art galleries in the city with just one visit to the award-winning Manitoba Museum; you’ll be in touch with the landscape, early bison history, past and present of the region. You’ll discover turn-of-the century architecture at the historic Exchange District with its antique and vintage shops and quaint cafes.

A visit to Canada requires a passport. US currency is accepted in many places; however, you should use Canadian money. Find out more about the Routes on

EARTHAt the heart of the capital city, Laoag, is the bell tower

unusually located 85 meters away from its St. William’s Cathedral. It is also said to be sinking an inch every year due to its structure and the soil where it stands. Some blocks away from the bell tower is the Ilocos Norte Museum where you can learn the Ilocano way of life in the past.

Another museum is from the Marcoses in Batac. Preserved here are the remains of the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, his medals, photos and other relics.

And you should not miss this landmark in Ilocos Norte: the Paoay Church. Also known as the St. Augustine Church, it was built from 1694 to 1894, and is now in the list of UNESCO World Heritage.

WATERIlocos Norte is not only about old churches and museums.

Yes, there are places here too where you can flaunt your trendy swimwear and get a tan. In Pagudpud alone, you can relax and be awed by the beauty of the sunset at Saud White Beach and the blue lagoon of Malingay Cove, or feel refreshed by the cool waterfalls of Kabigan, Saguigui, and Mabugabog.

WINDLocated in the coastal town of Bangui, on the way to

Pagudpud, are the 15 huge 23- storey high windmills. These supply electrical energy to the community and the nearby towns. Don’t just stare at these windmills from the road; you can actually come near these gigantic electric fans!

A n o t h e r i n c r e d i b l e towering structure in Ilocos Norte is the lighthouse at Cape Bojeador.

FIREIt may be a

short visit or a long vacation, but your trip to Ilocos Norte will definitely be incomplete if you will not taste their famous longganisa, bagnet, and empanada. The province is also known for their yummy chichacorn (cornick) – great for pasalubong!

All these and more when you stopover for an escapade in Ilocos Norte.

You might be thinking, you

are eating healthy meals, going regularly to gym, walking miles before you go to sleep, yet you are not happy with your body and health.

Fruits are the most important source of energy and could also cause great harm to your health. It is extremely important the right way of eating them. Fruits should always be eaten on empty stomach an hour before meals. They will detoxify your system and supply you with a great deal of energy.

Everyday at breakfast, we eat bread, a slice of Fruit or a glass of Fruit Juice. The whole meal rots, ferments and turns to acid. Fruit comes in contact with food in the stomach with digestive juices, the entire food gets spoiled depriving your body Vitamins and Proteins.

Eating fruits daily at right times on empty stomach will help you gain radiance in three days on your face, the black rings vanish, the longevity improves, lowers body stress, improves memory and you will maintain perfect normal weight.

D Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. It is the First choice among the world’s leading athletes.

D Kiwi has potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange, one of the best fruits to fight Cancer and improves memory.

D Strawberries have the highest antioxidant power, it protects the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

D Apple has antioxidants & flavor nodes which enhances vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risk of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

Getting bald, gaining extra pounds, black circles underneath eyes, your radiant glow fading away from your face, feeling tired and exhausted,

stress building up, memory loss, constipation, gas, stomach bloating and many more. In general, most of us are having these problems and we tend to forget the cause for such health issues.

D Oranges keep colds away, lowers cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well lessens the risk of colon cancer.

D Watermelon has good dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system, it also has lycopene, vitamin C and Potassium the cancer fighting oxidant.

D Guava & Papaya They both have high content of Vitamin C, Guava is rich in fiber, which prevents constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene which improves vision and good for your eyes.

Drink always only Fresh Fruit Juice, not canned Juice and don’t drink heated juice or eat cooked Fruits because cooking destroys all the vitamins. Make Juice at home, it takes same time or less than making coffee. So remember the Breakfast Time, Fruits and Bread don’t go together.

LOS ANGELES - In preparation for the coming flu season, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has launched a campaign to promote vaccine distribution to healthcare providers in the county. Public Health encourages health care providers to vaccinate their patients who are members of groups that are at risk for serious flu complications and order sufficient pandemic H1N1 flu vaccine to vaccinate all at-risk patients.

“Private physicians, community health centers, hospitals, and student health centers at colleges and universities can all do their part to protect their patients and Los Angeles County communities by ordering their vaccination today,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH; Director of Public Health and Health Officer. “Because healthcare providers can spread pandemic H1N1 to their patients, it is also important that they get vaccinated and urge all staff who come into contact with patients to do so as well.”

Pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine can be ordered at no charge from the federal government through a statewide web- based ordering system, along with supplies required for vaccine administration, such as safety syringes, alcohol swabs, and sharps disposal containers. Participating providers will be eligible to receive a vaccine administration fee from public and private health plans when they vaccinate eligible members. Private and non- profit health care providers throughout Los Angeles County are encouraged to participate in this program. This is the only way for health care providers to order this vaccine. Initial delivery of vaccine will be around October 15th.

To order the no-charge vaccine and supplies, providers may complete the simple online vaccine ordering process at www.CalPanFlu.org. For more information on pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine, providers may visit www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/h1n1.htm.

“Healthcare providers - especially those who treat patients who are most at risk for serious H1N1 complications - should plan now to vaccinate throughout the influenza season,” said Dr. Fielding. “Pediatricians, obstetricians/gynecologists, internists, family practitioners, and physicians who treat individuals with underlying chronic

illnesses should order vaccine now and develop systems for vaccinating their patients.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, has released pandemic H1N1 vaccination recommendations that prioritize groups that are at greatest risk for contracting the flu, spreading it, and suffering from serious complications. Priority for receiving the H1N1 vaccine should be given to:

• Pregnant women • People living with or caring for infants under six months of age • Emergency medical services personnel • Health care workers • Children and young adults from six months through 24 years • People aged 25 through 64 years with chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease, asthma, diabetes, or weakened immune systems

Residents seeking the H1N1 vaccine are encouraged to do so from their regular healthcare provider or local pharmacy. Individuals in Los Angeles County who are uninsured and do not have a regular healthcare provider may be able to receive low- or no-cost immunizations at a community health center, public health center or community vaccination event. Residents are encouraged to visit www.publichealth.lacounty.gov or call the county’s info line after October 5th at 2-1-1 to locate such providers.

The Department of Public Health is committed to protecting and improving the health of the nearly 10 million residents of Los Angeles County. Through a variety of programs, community partnerships and services, Public Health oversees environmental health, disease control, and community and family health. Public Health comprises more than 4,000 employees and has an annual budget exceeding $750 million. To learn more about Public Health and the work we do, please visit http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov or visit our YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/lapublichealth.

Modern scientists started agreeing with thousands of years old herbal medicines from China, South East Asia, Ayurvedic from India and Yunani from Mid East. Though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients.

Dreameditor’spick2a

Discouragement is one of the most effective weap-on of Satan, the son of perdition. He is so sure that if he can destroy our boldness, we will be ineffective

in accomplishing anything for good. If we explore the down-ward spiral created by this destructive force we will not be inept and caught off-guard.

One sign of discouragement is a divided mind which creates doubt and uncertainty. The underlying distraction affects every area and decision. No matter what we are do-ing, it feels like there is a dark cloud that covers our entire thought life. Discouragement leads to the so called “blame game”, where we feel a deep inner need to point a finger at someone else. Then, we might want to find fault with God because He allowed the painful circumstances we now face. It can continue to accusing others of the way they treated us; and perhaps we feel guilty ourselves for poor choices or past mistakes we made. We must realize that blame game is unproductive and an empty activity. No healing or restora-tion ever came from trying to pin responsibility on someone else for the pains and hardships in our lives.. When we be-come discouraged it will result not only to depression but fits of anger. When this occurs, bitterness may develop into a spirit of vengeance and then retaliation. If we let anger grow and fester us without resolution it easily mutates into de-spondency and acts like a cancer that slowly spread and destroys our entire attitude in life.

These traits are not what we expect if we call ourselves followers of Christ; but these are all too evident in the body of Christ. Therefore, we must ask God to search our hearts and remove any trace of these destructive seeds and to short-circuit the works of despair, anger and discouragement in our lives.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:5-6

A re we hindering God’s work in our lives? How tempting it is to think that we need very little im-provement. If we ask around , we will hear most

people will concede, including us… we all need probably a little bit of changes on one or two areas but will always resist discomfort. Yet most of us will add the phrase, but “I am a good person.” Oftentimes, we are fooled by this “good per-son” notion, as if God thinks the same way as we do. Don’t be fooled - God does not settle for humanity’s meager vision of “good enough”. When we become believers, The Father sees us, as people who “will be” when fully yielded to His Son, Jesus Christ. He then sets about achieving that com-plete renovation by transforming us from our present self into the image of His Son. The process is difficult, uncom-fortable and seems impossible. An essential step in the over-haul is removing the filth, damages or outmoded parts. The most difficult area that is so hard to let go is our self will. If God’s hand is at work in us He targets habits, attitudes and even relationships wherein we act independently from His purposes. Then He applies pressure to direct our attention there as well. He will not miss an iota of situation and takes hold of interests or hobbies that are delightful to us in order to coax from us the rather humbling question, “what more would you like me to submit to You?”

Conforming our will to God, changes who we are. In the midst of our transformation, we will feel pain and discomfort from His tools and may temporarily obscure the beauty of the design. Be aware that He is determine to break us for our good and for His glory.

Beverly Hills, CA-After fearlessly taking the junior welterweight belt, “ The Pacman” will show his prowess again, not inside the

ring but inside the recording arena. In the Philippines, if you

are a famous Filipino and do not have a song, then you are not really famous. But for

Manny Pacquiao it is not just his fame but his passion for music that opened the doors

once again to do another solo album.

This is going to be the third album of the People’s Champion. In 2006 Manny released his debut album entitled Para Sa’Yo and Laban Na ‘To. All songs including the carrier single of the same name were composed and produced by singer, songwriter, and the Philippines’ king of novelty song, Lito Camo. Para Sa’Yo and Laban Na ‘To that stirred up the Filipino’s pride was an instant smash hit with millions of copies sold worldwide. It was followed by the energetic hip-hop flavored Pac-Man Punch, a 4-track album released in 2007.

After the huge success of his first 2 solo albums, Manny is ready to take his stardom into the next level – conquering the international music scene.

Last September 16, 2009 at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, USA, Lito Camo signed a multi-million dollar recording contract deal with RBM Group International

and promising international producer, composer and singer, Isaac Reain

In this project, Manny will work with three well-respected and renowned record producers and promoters. Grammy award-winning producer, Richard Segal Huredia who has sold 75 million records and is credited with some of the biggest names is the music industry like Britney Spears, Hillary Duff, Eminem, Akon, Dr. Dre and many more. Music veteran and founder of Protocol Entertainment, Randy Sadd who is responsible in providing professional music promotion and quarterbacking for Shawn Mullins #1 hit, Lullaby before it was signed to Columbia Records. Mullins’ single went to be number 1 in the national radio charts for 8 straight weeks and later received a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal. Seasoned promoter Kevin Black of Interscope Records who assisted the multi-platinum success of

Eminem, Eve, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Jadakiss, Truth Hurts among others.

With these outstanding people behind “the People’s Champ’s” first international solo album, the result is very much predictable, a KNOCK-OUT. According to RBM Group International, this 12-tract album will be a collection of pop, hip-hop, soft rap, and love songs personally hand-picked by Manny himself. Songs that his fans around the world will truly adore.

Manny is ready to record his first single entitled “Dangerous”, written by Isaac Reain. Dangerous is scheduled to be released just before the Manny Pacquiao - Miguel Cotto Fight in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 14, 2009.

For sure the world’s pound for pound fighter will knock you off your feet not with his right hand jabs and devastating south paw hooks but with his knack for singing.

A recent watercolor painting by artist and art historian Lynda A. N. Reyes was juried into the Brand38 Annual National Juried

Exhibition. The exhibition, which is organized and set up by Associates of the Brand Library & Art Center, features works on paper that revolve around the theme “Beginnings”. It will be held from September 19 to October 23, 2009 at the Brand Library Art Galleries, the art and music division of the Glendale Public Library. The artists’ reception and awards ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place on Saturday, October 3 from 5 to 8 pm.

Reyes’ watercolor entry, titled “Structure Rising”, was selected from over 700 entries submitted by 305 artists from all over the United States. The show is comprised of eighty works on paper in a variety of media, including photography, drawings, watercolors and mixed media works, such various print techniques as etchings, linocuts, lithographs and monotypes, etc. The juror of the exhibit is Ruth Weisberg, an internationally renowned artist and the Dean of the Roski School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. Her works are found in 65 major museums and university collections such as the Bibliotheque Nationale of France, Paris; the Instituto Nationale per la Grafica, Rome; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the

Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Lynda A. N. Reyes is a versatile arts person. She is a visual artist, an art historian, an author, and an art educator. She is best known in the international academia for her pioneering book entitled “The Textiles of Southern Philippines” and her published studies in Philippine ethnic art. Her book is currently in the collection of 141 libraries of major universities and museums all over the world. She was a recipient of an International Fellowship Award from the American Association of University Women and a graduate fellowship at Northern Illinois University. Ms. Reyes has taught at the University of the Philippines Manila, at Glendale College and at several community colleges in LA area, including Santa Monica College and Pasadena City College. She has participated in the Pasadena Society of Artists juried shows at the VIVA Gallery, and in several other group exhibits at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts, the Arts and Books Gallery in LA, the Glendale College Art Gallery, the Brand Gallery and the Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery in Santa Monica. In the Philippines, she had a one-person show at the University of the Philippines Manila and several group shows at the Solidaridad Galleries. As a California Arts Council grant artist, she was a resource person for the visual

arts for the Glendale Unified School District as part of the Arts as Basic program of the City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission. Lynda is a member of the Pasadena Society of Artists www.pasadenasocietyofartists.org and the National Watercolor Society www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org. Visit www.lyndaanreyes.com for more information about Ms. Reyes.

The idea of art shows sponsored by the Brand Associates and the Glendale Public Library was born in the 1960’s when Home Savings and Loan, a key financial supporter, held an all-media show at the bank. At that time the Manager of the bank also served as President of the Brand Associates. In 1969 the first Brand Annual Exhibition took place in the newly built gallery annex of the Glendale Public Library. The first three shows were all-media shows, the next three were “Ceramic Conjunction” shows, attracting national interest, the following three shows were print shows. Over ten years ago, it was decided that the shows would be exhibitions of works on paper. The presence of jurors and use of their expert judgment became a key component of each show. Most of the jurors are well-known artists, such as Gerald Brommer, Martin Mondrus, Jim Morphesis, Lita Albuquerque, Kim Abeles and for the Brand 38, Ruth Weisberg. Since 1971 the annual national juried exhibitions have been organized and sponsored by the Associates of Brand Library. Noteworthy with respect to current show is the Brand 38 Chairperson, who is Board Member Irena Raulinaitis, a former chemist whose niche in art includes printmaking and sculpture.

The Associates of Brand Library is a non-profit volunteer organization whose purpose is to aid and promote the Brand Library and its Art Center through sponsorship of programs and donations, and to foster art and music education in the community. Aside from offering visitors a professional gallery experience, the Brand Library Art Galleries showcase works by established and emerging artists from California and, in particular, from Southern California, the Gallery intends to educate, enlighten, challenge, and enrich people’s lives through the experience of art.

Admission to the galleries is free and open to the public.

a principal residence during the three year period prior to the purchase date. The credit is equal to 10 percent (%) of the purchase price, not to exceed $8,000. The income limit for single taxpayers is $75,000 and $150,000 for married taxpayers; however, the law provides for a reduced credit if the income exceeds the prescribed limit of $170,000 for married taxpayers. business

In today’s business environment, a business owner must be well equipped with ways and means to maximize his advertising and marketing investment. Yet, one question still brings back

different answers. “How much should I invest in advertising?” usually generates

responses such as:

5% of your desired gross profit

10% of your desired gross profit

5% of the gross profit you made the last fiscal year

10% of the gross profit you made the last fiscal year

Don’t spend anything more than necessary

Don’t spend anything at all

And there are many more. All these answers are true to some extent because there really is no “one absolute” answer. In marketing 101, we were taught that a business should spend 10% - 15% of what they wanted to gross in revenue. So if a business wanted to make $150,000, it should set aside a budget of $15,000 to $22,500 just for advertising and marketing expenses alone.

The sad truth is that many start up business owners perceive advertising as a necessary “evil” as opposed to a business necessity. Feel free to call it business suicide if you must because that is what it is.

In a marketplace where everything is all about perception and perceived market value, taking no action in effectively positioning your products and/or services doesn’t mean you’re not you’re protecting your business equity. It is quite the contrary. This is because your inaction is giving leverage to your competition, which is doing the opposite of what you are doing.

Your advertising budget reflects the type of business you have. Invest in your advertising. You don’t wait to make money before you begin advertising. Begin advertising to MAKE MONEY!

PressRelease

NEW YORK, September 10, 2009 – In recognition of Life Insurance Awareness Month, MetLife offers consumers tips on the importance of life insurance. MetLife understands that in this difficult economy, consumers are increasingly looking for strategies to help protect their assets and safeguard their families from fiscal crises.

Life insurance provides protection to help ensure one leaves behind a financial legacy for families and loved ones. It guarantees money to help surviving beneficiaries ease financial burdens such as making up for lost income, funding a child’s education, or paying off debt. Some policies also offer dividends and tax-deferred cash value, which can be withdrawn or borrowed against during one’s lifetime for important purchases and even retirement.

Life insurance benefits vary depending on the type of policy. Below is a brief overview of the different life insurance policies MetLife offers:

• Whole Life is the simplest form of permanent life insurance. It provides a guaranteed death benefit payout to beneficiaries when the policyholder passes away, a tax-deferred cash value, guaranteed to grow every year, and non-guaranteed dividends that can be used to increase the value of the policy. For small business owners, whole life insurance offers a solution to help protect the business from financial hardship, should there be an untimely death of one of the owners.

• Universal Life, a form of permanent insurance, provides flexibility to change, within limits, the timing and amount of your premium payments. Consumers have the option to build the policy’s cash value through paying higher premiums, within certain limits, or to pay lower premiums and focus more on guaranteed death benefit protection. Minimum premium payments are required to keep the policy active.

• Variable Universal Life offers flexible long-term life insurance protection. Variable universal life allows the policyholder to invest the cash value in a number of professionally managed funding options. This option offers the potential for cash value growth that is tied to the performance of the underlying funding options. As with any investment, the value of the underlying funds will fluctuate with changes in market conditions and there is the risk of loss.

• Term Life insurance provides a cost-effective solution for temporary life insurance needs, and generally do not have cash value.

While benefits differ depending on the policy and provider, it is important that one looks for reputable companies with strong financial strength and credit ratings when shopping for life insurance. Independent rating agencies such as Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s provide insurance company ratings. These rating institutions have maintained consistently high financial strength and credit ratings for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and its affiliates.

“MetLife is the leading life insurer in the United States with more than 140 years of providing families with protection and reassurance,” said Laurel Daring, assistant vice president, National Sales Organization at MetLife. “As we remain financially strong in this down economy, our customers can be confident knowing the future of their loved ones is well protected by a reliable company that cares about them.”

I have experienced everything that my country could ever offer…the people’s camaraderie, the delectable dishes that one like me can truly be proud of – sinigang

na baboy, adobo, our very own Batangas bulalo, goto in Lipa, sinaing na isda, ofcourse manggang hilaw dipped in bagoong, halu-halo and a lot more. And how about the beautiful and undefiled beaches that makes the country a paradise not only to its people but to tourists as well?

Nevertheless, in my 3 years as immigrant, I must admit that US gave me so much convenience in a lot of ways - less pollution, less traffic (really at par from the traffic situation in the Philippines), no jeepneys or buses blowing their horns infront of you, less worries about snatchers waiting to get you victimized, no typhoons that visit often like they’re-so-at-home and then leaving the country devastated, no flooded streets to walk on or to pass by, etc. All of these you’ll surely miss once you get here. (Or did I really say “miss”?)

But there’s also one thing that I didn’t know would make me miss Philippines the more…

When I gave birth to our eldest who’s now turning three, the dilemma started to plunge in and it gave my husband and I a hard time trying to cogitate. Taking into consideration the many factors such as: who should take care of our baby while we’re at work? Are baby-sitters the answer? Could they be trusted? How much should we allot for the baby-sitters fee? Is it gonna be worth our hard work?

Then I also talked to some moms like me who have kids and asked what they did in order for their kids to be attended. Some said that they resorted to petitioning their mothers who’re in the Philippines so that their moms can take care of their babies. Aside

from the peace of mind, they could even get away from fees and that they’re saving money at the same time. Some other moms told me that one solution that they did as parents to the kids was arranging their schedule. The husband would work at night while the wife works during the day or vice versa. In that sense, both of them were able to take care of their kids and that formula worked for them. Some others even had to bring the babies to their families in the Philippines and after 2 years or so, they would get them back because atleast at that age, they are almost ready for school. When the kids start going to school, the parents could also go to work. But then again, the question is…what if none of these work for us?

Now here comes the moment when you want to tell yourself…I wish I were in the Philippines. There you don’t have to worry about baby-sitters. Your family will surely love to take care of your kids. It’s so easy when you have a sister, a mom, a brother or even aunts to support you. And even if you have to pay for your kid’s “yaya”, it’s not gonna be as much as what you would have to spend here in the US. But somehow, ideas like these are just mere pipe dreams. Even if you try to wink as many times as you want, the reality hits you hard…you are here in the US. And no matter how difficult it is to muddle through, still, at the end of the day, it’s your kids’ welfare that you always have to consider.

By: Kat Iniba Teens made a huge difference this past month during the 2009 Teen Choice Awards…83 million votes, to be exact. The Awards show, hosted by the Jonas Bros, celebrated the hottest

teen icons in film, television, music, sports and fashion. This year, “Twilight” led the nominations with 12. Out of the 12, they took home 11 surfboards – including Choice Movie Actor (Robert Pattinson), Choice Movie Actress (Kristen Stewart), Choice Movie drama and Choice Movie Romance. Other winners included Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Bros., and Taylor Swift. Miley Cyrus, who stated “I’m a huge fan of hers” presented Britney Spears with the Ultimate Choice Award.

Back on the Green Carpet, before the show, Miley Cyrus donned possibly one of the shortest black mini-skirts I had seen for the night, which she topped with a very transparent white tank top, showing off her black lace bra. I secretly thought her outfit to be too much for a 16 year old and had to remind myself that she was still not of legal age. Besides promoting her new clothing line, we discussed her performing her latest single, “Party in the USA.” She openly admitted still being nervous and “getting butterflies” in her stomach. After Miley’s “mature” performance, which included a little bit of pole dancing, she definitely fooled me.

In addition to Miley’s performance, other performers included the Jonas Bros and Sean Kingston. However, many of the stars I interviewed were excited to see the Black Eyed Peas perform. And perform they did, when they flew over the audience and onto the stage on surfboards.

Speaking of the Black Eyed Peas, they set a record on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for having the longest successive stay at the top by a duo or group with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.” And I gotta feeling, that this is just the first of many for the superstar group.

The 5’6, lightweight boxing champion has partnered with music producer-singer Isaac Reain for his first single titled “Dangerous.” But before you skeptics start to ask what the best fighter in the world is doing singing, let us not forget that Manny has surprised skeptics of the boxing world time and time again. He’s consecutively won in four different weight divisions, and really, who can forget the brutal match against Hatton that left us all wondering, “That was it?” It was over before the blink of an eye.

It’s my first time writing for LA Pinoy Magazine and I have to just put this out there—I hate it when celebrities try to transition their fame into other artistic avenues. Whether it’s from singing to acting (Madonna, Mariah Carey) or acting to singing (Russell Crowe, Keanu Reeves, and Dennis Quaid), most celebrities’ think lightly of the task. Not the case with Manny, who, thanks to the myriad of music videos of him singing Philippines’ national anthem and his official music video for “Lahing Pinoy,” did I realize that here is a professional boxer that can sing. Also, Manny Pacquiao is not your typical “celebrity.” He’s a celebrity in a sense that he’s the most recognized boxer in the world, but his celebrity status is based on merit. On talent. On hard work. On perseverance. On dedication and an undying love for his country that is illustrated in his second passion—singing.

“Lahing Pinoy” was written by Manny’s longtime friend and well-known Filipino songwriter, Lito Camo. His catchy theme songs for “Wowowee” and “Otso-Otso” are equally admirable to his 1997 debut album Sino Camo? Camo’s “Kung Ikaw” is a personal favorite, comparable to James Taylor’s folksy sound.

“Dangerous” written by Isaac Reain is bound to be a pop hit. At first I thought it was an ode to Manny’s future opponents in the ring; a metaphor to watch out for his natural left-handed speed punches and 67-inch arm reach. But the song embodies a different match—one from the heart and the pangs of love. Reian is an accomplished singer-songwriter in his own right with an album titled Midnight Drive available online

(at emusic.com). With songs like “American Dream,” “Everyday Is a Good Day” and “Midnight Drive,” Reian’s optimism for a better future is a hopeful one. His voice is lumberesque. It’s deep and has a country twang to it, but not dominated by the overarching soulful quality of his songs.

It’s only fitting that Reain will partner with both Camo and Pacquiao in a multimillion-dollar recording label with RBM Group International. It takes Camo’s songwriting ability and Reain’s musical compositions to balance with Pacquiao’s gentle voice. Together, the three will be sure to deliver a knockout album. Just as I was surprised to hear Pacquiao’s tender lines of gaining strength from the pride of his people and his country, so too am I convinced that this three-man collaboration will continue to inspire a nation that has banded together to support Pacquiao’s legacy as a boxer, and now singer.

It looks like boxing gloves will not be the only thing Manny Pacquiao will

be holding. His next accessory: A microphone. His opponent: Tackling the charts, this time as an emerging singer with the music chops to showcase it.

Many years ago, while a graduate student in Germany, my wife and I, and two year old son, drove six

hours to the Belgian city of Ghent, a city of canals on its Flemish side. We were lost and came across a flickering lamp which guarded the façade of a small Catholic chapel.

An elderly woman opened the church door, and before I could notice the white strands on her hair, and her toothless smile, she asked “Pilipino ba kayo?”

It was only many years later that I discovered that it was in this same city, Ghent, where our national hero Jose Rizal, exactly one hundred years earlier, published his second novel, El Filibusterismo.

I was here at the same spot a hundred years later with this kind Filipina caretaker, thousands of miles away from the Philippines.

After many years living abroad, I continue to ask myself: what brings us Filipinos to foreign lands, braving uncertainty, risking separation from family and friends? Is it simply for want of a better economic life, or from something lying deep in the Filipino psyche? Could it be that in the Filipino soul is the quintessential Journeyman, the restless adventurer at heart?

Indeed, Filipino Journey is part of our history, our culture, and our destiny. In the grand scheme of the Pinoy universe, the Filipino is the eternal viajero fulfilling his own fate.

The journey of the Filipino Hero is a pattern that follows the Journey Myth. The Pinoy migrant often leaves his loved ones for the hope of a better future, usually one spouse going ahead, leaving family behind, who are later to follow once the pathway has been paved. The migrant encounters tremendous difficulties along the way, either financial hardship, temptations of the flesh, or extreme loneliness. The goal is usually the prize of permanent residency or the promise of contract employment elsewhere.

Eventually, through the passage of time, and countless years of hardship, the mission is ultimately completed, and the family follows. But more significantly, with this act of fulfillment comes the realization that perseverance and suffering results in success. The Filipino traveler acquires a self-knowledge which is invaluable; it is this learned insight, the boon that can save his family and community.

When he returns to his home, the Pinoy is a hero transformed, The next generation reaps the benefits of his sacrifice, and they too, are reborn, pursuing the journey in their adopted land. In all these instances, the common denominator is that the Filipino is always willing to leave his comfortable environment, setting foot on a road not taken, but in some way feeling in his bones that it is what life expects from him. The Filipino adventurer is not seeking something new but searching for what is old and recognizable—his own self, his own identity as the Journeyman.

What sets the journey apart, is that it acquires a spiritual dimension. He is helped along the way by an encounter with a higher power that arms him with supernatural powers like the mythological Bernardo Carpio to withstand the obstacles that come his way. The deep religiosity of the Filipino allows him to triumph over adversity through the virtues of quiet suffering, fierce determination and the promise of redemption and resurrection.
