Oil & gas achievements

Record-breaking topside production platforms

The Lunskoye- A and Piltun-B topside integrated decks are the worlds largest production platforms to be installed by the float-over method, with mating weights of 23,000 and 27,000 tonnes respectively.

AMEC designed the two record-breaking production platforms for the Sakhalin Energy Investment Company as part of a US$20 billion development of two frontier offshore oil and gas fields on the Sakhalin Island shelf in the Russian Far East.

The topside platforms are able to operate at temperatures as low as -40°C in Winter and as high as +40°C in Summer, to withstand sea ice loading and significant wave action during storms, and to remain steady during earthquakes.

AMEC provided preliminary design for the topsides and substructure, development of detailed design, procurement and project management, preparation of documentation and Russian regulatory approvals, and site support throughout topside construction in South Korea.

Oil & gas achievements

More than 12 world class Floating Production Storage Offshore (FPSO’s) over the last 20 years

AMEC provided engineering design for the Bonga - one of the largest floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels in the world for Shell Nigeria.

The Bonga FPSO is a staggering 315m long and weighs 300,000 tonnes.

Designed to produce 225,000 barrels of oil and 150 million ft3 of gas per day.

The vessel was built by Samsung in Korea and it sailed to Tyneside in the UK where the topsides were fitted by AMEC. The River Tyne had to be dredged specially for the arrival of Bonga, which is the heaviest vessel that had ever sailed down the river.

Largest gas storage facility in the UK

The Aldbrough gas storage facility at Cheshire is the largest on-shore underground gas storage facility of its kind in the UK – designed by AMEC engineers.

420,000 m3 of gas is stored at 300barg pressure (also a record high) in underground salt caverns which are leached from the natural salt strata found in the area. Each cavern takes around two years to leach!

The facility is capable of providing enough gas in one day to provide for four million homes.

The plant was designed to be completely unmanned and remotely controlled and operated from miles away. This meant that a very complex and large distributed control system (DCS) and emergency shutdown (ESD) system
