In November of 1993, I gave my ice breaker speech. That sounds like a long time ago, doesn’t it? But it really is not. There are many people right here in District 25 who have been in Toastmasters for decades. Many have multiple Distinguished Toastmaster Awards. What keeps them going like the en-ergizer bunny? What keeps these people going in an organi-zation like toastmasters for so long is they are devoted toastmasters who are not merely trudging along out of force of habit. They are advancing in their leadership and communi-cation skills with a passion that grows each year as they continue to Reach for Success…again! Helen Thomas, was once the dean of the White House press corps. She began cover-ing the White House after John F. Kennedy was inaugurated. At age 86, she remains an active journalist. What has kept her going for so long? She keeps going because she is passionate about what she does, and she refuses to become complacent. "There's no such thing as success," she says. "There's always another mountain to climb." In Toastmasters there are many mountains for us to climb.

Climb the Education Program Mountain Again

What do Toastmasters do when they finish their Distinguished Toastmaster Award (DTM)? Many, like me, are continuing their growth in the leadership and communication program by starting the educational program all over again. We have to remember that no matter how accomplished or skillful we are, we can bene-fit by a review of the basics. Speech organiza-tion, vocal variety, eye contact and gestures are fundamental building blocks of speaking. By practicing them over again, we can correct any bad habits that might have slipped into our presentations. In short, we can REACH for

SUCCESS by focusing on making our communication skills stronger. Toastmasters International changes the Communica-tion and Leadership manu-als and programs every few years. They come out with new manuals periodically and update content and the challenges they present to us. The new Competent Leader Manual helps each club hold more productive meetings and helps each of us be more confident in each meeting through evaluation. By starting the educational program over again, we can take advantage of these new program features.

Climb the Outside the Club Mountain

The Toastmasters adventure does not end at the club level. There are plenty of opportuni-ties where toastmasters can stretch them-selves, leave their comfort zone and make new friends. Many of our members are doing that right now by competing in the fall speech contests. The preparation of a presentation for an area or division or district contest to be given in a competitive environment is a bit more taxing than a club presentation. It is very rewarding being in front of a larger crowd most of whom you do not know. It is certainly a growing ex-perience. Those who step out of their comfort zone and Reach for Success may not win the contest, but they have taken one more growth step toward making their comfort zone larger. Voices October 2006

In June, will you be looking back on a year of achievement for your members? Now is the time to plan ahead and ensure your club gains the most education and leadership awards it can. The best way to do this is work back from the end of the year. First, calculate how many normal meetings there are remaining, bearing in mind some meeting dates may be taken up with contests or other events that prevent manual speech-making or educational presentations. This is often a useful exercise in itself; the number of normal meetings remaining might be revealed as alarmingly small. Then identify the members most likely to achieve awards and plot their remaining speeches, and edu-

cational presentations, to enable them to reach the target. In plotting these speeches and presentations, do not leave the last one to the last meeting. Leaving the completion of awards to the last minute is dangerous and has often lead to failure in past years. Sometimes members stall when getting close to their tenth speech. I referred to this as the ‘seven speech itch’, when someone gets close to their seventh speech and some-how feels intimidated by the prospect of going further. Often they go for a long time without being scheduled and are in danger of leaving the club. They need mentoring to get over the ‘itch’ and complete their manual. Please register awards online as soon as they are achieved. It is not fair on members to wait for their recognition. Bear in mind that they have not received the award until it is confirmed on the TI website. If it shows as ‘pending’ this means there is a prob-lem that needs sorting out – not that it is just delayed a bit. If you encounter any problems, there is no need to let them fester. Your Area Governor or Division Governor are eager to help you. So plan now to ensure a year of achievement. Then you can look back with pride knowing that you have done the best for your members.

Plan Now for Success! Maurice Taitt, DTM – Lieutenant Governor Education and Training 2006-2007

Remember that dues can be paid online on the TI website. Did you know that you only need a minimum of 6 members to pay online? Clubs that wait to pay until they receive dues from every member risk the chance of missing the deadline (submit by midnight October 10) and losing out on receiving DCP Credit. Even if you miss the deadline for DCP credit, strive to pay club dues as soon as possible so the members and the club can remain in good standing.

Go to Club Login and enter your club number and password. Your password came with your semi Annual Dues report. Once onsite checkout the other activities you can do as well. Also, don’t forget that clubs paying their dues ON TIME during both semi annual dues periods will receive credit for the Five Star Club Award!

District 25 Email Distribution Mailing List

Did you know that we have over 2000 members in District 25 and approximately 500 members do not have an email listed and over 300 members have incorrect email addresses? Starting in October, the District will be setting up an email distribu-tion list that will be used solely for communicating important information to clubs about upcoming district sponsored train-ing, district business, and special events. Of course, this list will also be used to send out the District 25 monthly newsletter. In the coming days an automated email will be sent to you from [email protected] asking you to verify your email address and requesting to be added to the District 25 email list. If you want to stay informed and receive communica-tion from the district, you must verify your email address with the provided link in the email. Members who do not wish to receive emails can simply disregard the email. It should also be noted that if you choose to subscribe to the newsletter, you can always unsubscribe in the future.

Knock, Knock! Who’s There? David McCallister, ATMG/CL - Division A Governor 2006-2007

What keeps me in Toastmasters? First of all the relationships and friendships I have developed through the years! Toastmaster friendships indeed have very special qualities: they provide support and empathy from people who want you to succeed, who give you valuable feedback and whom you know you can rely on. If your Toastmaster friends helped you succeed, then wouldn’t you like to return the favor? There is a simple way to do so by mentoring one or several new members. What can be more rewarding than giving them advice, supporting them actively in their struggle against their fear to stand up and

speak, and witnessing how quickly they grow and improve? Be there when they need you, when they prepare and rehearse their presentation, when they deliver their speech – and feel your smiling and encouraging presence – or after delivery – to congratulate them or (it happens!) to help them get over their frustration - and give them the gentle push that will get them going. Our Toastmasters clubs have no teachers, no gurus; our method is totally based on interactivity and solidarity. We are here for each other, and seasoned Toastmasters should all volunteer to mentor newcomers. Believe me, it is a satisfying experience and you won’t regret it! So, next time you see your vice president membership, do me a favor. Propose to be a mentor. You’ve been helped by your fellow Toastmasters when you needed them, now it’s your turn. Make a commitment to continue building Toastmasters friendships! Let us all reach for success together, not only for our own sake but first of all for all those who could greatly benefit from our help!

Opportunity! Opportunity doesn’t make a date with you; it just shows up whether you’re ready or not. So if opportunity knocked on your door right now, would you be ready to seize it or would you let opportunity slip through your fingers? Take this test: 1. What would you say if your boss asked you to give a presentation to your department? 2. What would you say if a neighbor asked you to chair a meeting or a committee?

3. What would you say if an acquaintance asked you to say a few impromptu words at a banquet or a wedding? If you answered anything other than, “You bet!”, you won’t be ready when opportunity comes knocking. The 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren LaCroix, said, “So many of us can see clearly where we want to go but we go back and forth saying, ‘if only I had a little more time, if only I had a little more money, if only’ . . . yet we never take that first step.” The Toastmasters program is there to help you take that first step. Along with your club and fellow Toastmasters, the program will help you to reach your goals. And when you take that step towards your next education award whether a CC, CL, ALS, or DTM, you’re going to like the way that feels. However, you can’t get something from nothing. You will have to do your part. There’s no such thing as a backseat Toastmaster. Sure, there are 101 reasons to put off your goals for another day, but don’t let them stand between you and your goals. I congratulate those members and clubs that have already decided to cross the line and take the path from ordinary to dis-tinguished. This achievement tells me that you’re doing something right. You’re creating a club climate that motivates your members to go for their CCs and ACs. It tells the District that you are building leaders with each new CL, ALB, ALS, and DTM. It tells your fellow club officers that your members are having fun as membership grows. It tells your fellow Toastmasters that you are ready for the opportunity when it comes knocking.

What keeps you in Toastmasters? Kelli McDuff, ATMS/CL - Division C Governor 2006-2007

The Tri-Area contest and the Area 44 contest are over and there are some definite contenders for the Division D and District 25 contest. If you weren’t there, you missed out on some very interesting presen-tations. We heard about Gunshot Holes in the Living room floor from Shooting the Shack, Cooking for the cure of Valentines, Uncle Rowdy’s Bear eating the smoked ham, Mee Maw’s unexpected visit and Carol coming out of the closet. Except for three officers, Division D was 100% and led the way to meeting District Governor Earl Hill’s challenge of 100% officers trained. There will be lots of ribbons being given out to Division D. All the clubs in Division D did accomplish at least four officers trained, so half of a DCP point was obtained. Set your calendars for Saturday, November 4 at 9 a.m. for the Division D Contest at Baylor in Waco. Seems to me that it will be another near laughing so hard you wet your pants contest. Is this a speech contest or is a get the bathroom prior to speech contest? Set your calendars for Friday, November 17 for the District Conference. Sounds like it is going to be well worth the money and a fun weekend. Speaking of money, if you pay now, it is on sale. You know me, a dedicated bargain shopper. Hurry and get on-line and register now!!!!!!!! Save some money so you can go again. Or better yet, buy something at the Toastmaster’s Shop. Hey, I know what I need, another CC Manual. You see I just completed my CC, so I have to get busy on another one. Always carry that CC manual with you. You never know when you might be asked to speak and a good Toastmaster never speaks unless it can count in a manual. You know a speech in the CC manual is just a longer version of tabletopics. I want you to know that I have been Wow-D and am wearing mine. District Governor Earl Hill has been Wow-D and wears his. Have you been Wow-D yet? Have you received your Wow-D? Get busy! I love to give away Wow-D’s.

WAY TO GO! Division F Toni Hendrick, ATMG/CL - Division F Governor, 2006-2007

CONGRATULATIONS to the following Division F members for already achieving Education goals: Competent Communicator awards: Dixie Barrios, Sara Beall, Oliver Cozby, Bryce Docker and Cathy Lloyd; Competent Leader awards: Cathy Lloyd; Old Competent Leader awards: Liz Herring, Brenda Lewis and Ty Mayo; Advanced Communicator awards: Melissa Ashmore - B, Chris Bartels - B, Oliver Cozby - B, Kim Lee - S, Karen Smith - B, Kathy Sutherland - G, Mitzi Ward - B and Greg Wyatt - B; Advanced Leader awards: Randy Terrell - S. We also have 23 NEW members and 12 clubs have met at least 1 DCP goal. Way to Reach for Success in 2006-2007. Area Contests are just about over but there is a lot left to do as Division Contests are around the corner. Ustedes estan invitados which means: YOU ARE INVITED!! Please come to the Division F Contest on Saturday, October 28, 2006. Briefing starts at 10 am and the contest begins at 11 am. Lunch will be provided and we need lots of helpers. Check the District website, www.d25toastmasters.org for a flyer and contact information. Tip of the month: Did you know that a Table Topics answer is a mini-speech? A good way to format a response is to repeat the question with your answer in the Opening and Closing. For the Body of the "speech", tell why you feel the way you do. That's it! See how easy.

Contest season is here - Humorous Speech and Table Topics! It's Time - Area Contests need to be completed by October 21, and Division Contests completed by November 4. This format ensures the contestants and the organizers have adequate time for their preparations. If you haven’t booked your contests yet—it’s time! If you have any questions about contest rules, need templates for contest materials, or have other contest related questions, contact District Contest Quality Chair Cindy Breman at [email protected].

Lt. Governor Education & Training Attacked and Lives to Tell The Tale Anonymous Sources from the Tri-Area Contest

If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed that it had hap-pened. You see, I was there sitting and paying close attention to the speaker….when all of a sudden she was all over District 25’s Lieutenant Governor Education and Training (LGET). Yes it was Maurice Taitt that was in the arms of this strange woman. I swear to you, this is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This was the scene: WHAT: Tri-Area Contest WHEN: Saturday, September 16, 2006 WHERE: Scott and White Hospital in Temple, TX. TIME: About 1015am. He, the esteemed LGET, Maurice Taitt, was sitting quietly in the front row. He was awake and did have his eyes open. Mee Maw was speaking. She was explaining why she came instead of her daughter Carol. You see Carol was ill and felt that someone had to come to explain to the Toastmasters in the Tri-Area why she couldn’t be there. Mee Maw was just the person to undertake this very important responsibility. It seemed that Carol had explained to Mee Maw what exactly Toastmaster Organization was all about and what was absolutely necessary to be included in this presentation. What you might ask? Well important things like greeting the Toastmasters, shaking hands and even words of the day. Yes there were definitely words of the day. Periodically you would see Mee Maw inching her way closer to the edge of the front table. To me, with my contacts in place, it appeared that she was smiling and even maybe …yes it seemed like she was winking. But at who? Well I am telling you I would not have believed it unless I was there and had seen it with my own eyes. All of a sudden Mee Maw was wrapped around Maurice. Yes District 25’s own LGET was being absconded by Mee Maw!!!!! I think I was so surprised that I along with most of the others almost wet our pants laughing. Just as we were trying to regain some control, Mee Maw was gone. At lunch the discussion included, who was she? Where did she go? Where did she come from? The only different thing was….Carol was now out. I sure wish someone could explain about Carol being out, Me Maw’s disappearance and how were we going to explain this to Mrs. Taitt? One more thing…for the record that is, I think someone should have called the men in little white coats….for who, I am not sure. Mee Maw? Carol who was now out? Those of us witnessing this entire thing, where are we? Was this a dream? No I paid to see this and boy did I get my money’s worth.

Energizer Toastmasters (continued from page 1)

Climb the Leadership Mountain

The most important mountain is leadership. Toastmasters really is the safest place to develop leadership skills. As soon as a toastmaster joins a club, he or she has the opportunity to be placed in a leadership role. With many small clubs dotting the Dis-trict 25 horizon, the need for leadership skills is great. The District offers training and support, supplying members with the tools to succeed in Leadership. Our Leadership Summit Officer Training Program is second to none. We had excellent attendance at the start of the year and expect the same at the mid-year training. Toastmasters offers many opportunities for leadership, from club officer to District Governor, and beyond. At each level of leadership, there are plenty of supportive and encouraging people who will guide all toastmasters as they Reach for Success.

Discover Your Mountain

I have often said “Wishing for a thing does not make it so no more than dreaming makes your dreams come true. If you really want something, you must earn it.” Many times the secret to success is finding what you enjoy doing and then perusing that with a passion. When you are fully occupied with what you enjoy doing, with what you have a passion for, then you have discovered YOUR Mountain. You then have to work diligently and regularly if you are going to climb it. Once you climb your mountain, you will remember the thrill of climbing it the first time. That will cause you to want to climb it again and tune up your communication and leadership skills even more. Toastmasters self improvement program lasts as long as you want it to. Reach for Success, again!

Congratulations to our 2006 Smedley Clubs The following District 25 Toastmasters clubs added 5 or more new members in August and September.

You Can’t Talk About That!

Members often tell us that other Toastmasters have told them that speeches concerning politics, religion and sex are forbidden by Toastmasters International because "such controversial subjects are not appropriate." This is not true. Toastmasters International does not prohibit any speech topic, content or language. Toastmasters International recognizes club members may learn much about the world around them from listening to others’ speeches on a variety of subjects. This variety can add interest to club meetings and stimulate thoughts and ideas. For these reasons, Toastmasters International does not place restrictions on topics, content, or language of any speeches. It also recognizes that a club is a diverse group of people and recommends members be sensitive to this diversity and use good taste and responsibil-ity when selecting speech topics, content, and language. While Toastmasters International has no restrictions, a club may guide its members on how to observe good taste and sensitivity in the context of that particular club.

Cowtown Toastmasters has made it known throughout Area 11 and Division A, that they mean business when it comes to raiding other Toastmasters Clubs. “We are so excited to be the first club in the District to raid another Toastmasters club and take possession of their banner,” said a member of Cowtown. “We welcome any club to come on out and visit Cowtown Toastmasters and view our extensive collection of District 25 club banners.” “Plus Two is just the beginning. Next we plan to invade Afterburners and collect their banner,” said another member of Cowtown known as “Dark Horn.” We were told that the club has plans to collect every banner in the District from Waco to Wichita Falls. “I cannot imagine where the club would store all of the banners, but you can believe the meetings will definitely be more colorful and eventful,” said Dark Horn. Any club that is interested in “raiding” Cowtown Toastmasters or simply retrieving their stolen club banner should make plans to get up awfully early. The club meets every Monday morning at 6:30am at the West Side Café located at 7950 Camp Bowie Blvd in Fort Worth.

Get Ready For Club Elections If your club elects officers semiannually, it’s not too early to think about upcoming elections. Here’s a helpful timetable: ►Before September 30: Appoint a Nominating Committee (see Club Bylaws). The committee is to be run by the immediate past president or the most recent past president available. ►Last Meeting in October: The Nominating Committee reports to the club. ►First Meeting in November: Call for the Nominating Committee Report. (If the Nominating Committee does not have a report at the last meeting in October, postpone the election until one week after the meeting at which the report is given.) ►Call for nominations from the floor: Nominations begin with the last president and proceed in descending order. Remember, a quo-rum is 51 percent of active members. ►Announce the results. All clubs must be on a July 1 – June 30 annual term, or on July 1 – December 31 and January 1–June 30 semiannual terms. (Please note: Clubs that meet weekly have the option of electing officers for either a semiannual term or an annual term. Clubs that meet less frequently must elect officers for annual terms.) Holding elections at any other time is in direct conflict with the Club Constitu-tion. If your club elections are not in compliance with the timetable, now is the time to change and meet constitution stan-dards. Once the officers have been elected, go to the TI Web site, access the Club Business section and add your club’s offi-cers online! Remember to order club officer pins and plaques of appreciation for your officer installation ceremony. Check your 2006 Supply Catalog for a complete list of items and prices or place your order online at www.toastmasters.org.

Find a Mistake? It is our policy to include something for everyone. Since some people like to find errors, we regularly include a few in our publications to meet this need.

Please email: [email protected]

Some Helpful Guidelines for Submitting Articles for Voices: • It’s usually best to use the inverted pyramid style. Write the material from most significant to least significant

so the editor (or the reader) can cut it off at any point (or any time) and know that the most important part has been covered.

• Try to stay under 500 words (but don’t worry about it). • If possible, include pictures, along with information about who is in the picture and what is going on. • If formatting is important, use Word, but plain email is fine too. • If there are more than a couple of pictures, compress them and attach the compressed file. Now get those articles in! Deadline for submittals is the last Monday of the month. All articles are subject to editing.
