John Med- ley sells high-quality Kentucky pork products from a retail outlet in subur- ban Louisville. Only a few months old, Medley’s store is off to a flying start. Like any producer who longs for retail prices instead of farm prices, Med- ley knew the best way to get the prices he wanted was to open his own store. More than a year ago, the Washington County pork producer wrote out a bold business plan that would make him a storefront meat retailer. He opened Ken- tucky Heritage Meats in March. In his first week of business, Med- ley closed a deal to supply Churchill Downs with all the pork it needed for Kentucky Derby weekend. Medley filled an order for 12,000 pounds of pork and had it to Churchill Downs Executive Chef Gil Logan’s barbecue smokers within two days. Medley said the Kentucky Depart- ment of Agriculture’s Winifred Molohon was instrumental in network- ing with all the essential parties to pull off the massive order, matching Logan with distributor SYSCO and producer Medley. Medley was selling directly to consumers at the farmers’ market in Louisville when he came in contact with Molohon, who had a network of pos- sible pork sources for him. Logan raved about the pork and promi- nently promoted the quality of all Kentucky food products that he bought for the Derby, even during a pre-race interview on the ESPN network. “A chef who is not buying locally is just plain stu- pid,” Logan said. “Why would they try to get something shipped from Kansas or Iowa, with the number of times it is handled, just to save a nickel?” A total of nine producers in a cen- tral Kentucky hog marketing coopera- tive, including Medley’s own Happy Hollow Farm, supply the pork for Medley’s retail store. His store also carries top-quality Kentucky beef from Kentucky Home Grown Beef in Washington County. Lamb and brown eggs are also sold, and he plans to add chicken in the near future, Medley said. Food is best when it is fresh, andit’s even better when you knowwhere it came from. John Med-

ley sells high-quality Kentucky porkproducts from a retail outlet in subur-ban Louisville. Only a few monthsold, Medley’s store is off to a flyingstart.

Like any producer who longs forretail prices instead of farm prices, Med-ley knew the best way to get the priceshe wanted was to open his own store.More than a year ago, the WashingtonCounty pork producer wrote out a boldbusiness plan that would make him astorefront meat retailer. He opened Ken-tucky Heritage Meats in March.

In his first week of business, Med-ley closed a deal to supply ChurchillDowns with all the pork it needed forKentucky Derby weekend. Medleyfilled an order for 12,000 pounds ofpork and had it to Churchill DownsExecutive Chef Gil Logan’s barbecuesmokers within two days.

Kentucky bans animals from VS-positive states

Kentucky has banned all livestock, wild and exoticanimals from New Mexico and western Texas fromentering the state because animals in those states

have been diagnosed with vesicular stomatitis.The ban in Texas was extended south to the Gulf of Mexico

on June 23 after equine on four premises in Starr County andone site in Dimmit County were diagnosed with VS.

Kentucky regulations prohibit the entry of livestock, wildand exotic animals from states where an animal has been diag-nosed with the virus.

A ban originally was imposed in mid-May on animalsfrom all of Texas as a result of a VS diagnosis in the westernpart of the state. A week later, Gov. Ernie Fletcher issued anemergency regulation that prohibited livestock from about 60counties in west Texas from coming into Kentucky but allowedanimals from the rest of Texas to enter the Commonwealth un-der certain conditions.

Equine coming into Kentucky from states that borderTexas and New Mexico, as well as the non-restricted area ofTexas, must have a negative vesicular stomatitis test within the10-day period preceding entry into the Commonwealth.

Vesicular stomatitis occurs sporadically in the UnitedStates, usually in southwestern states. Before May, it was lastdiagnosed in the U.S. in 1998 in Texas and New Mexico.

The viral disease can affect horses, cattle and swine, andoccasionally sheep, goats and deer. It causes blisters to form inthe animal’s mouth, on teats or along the hooves. Discomfortfrom the blisters can cause an animal to stop eating or suffertemporary lameness. Vesicular stomatitis is rarely fatal andusually lasts about two weeks.

The Kentucky Department ofAgriculture’s Forage TestingProgram has received certifica-

tion from the National Forage TestingAssociation (NFTA), an organizationdedicated to improving the accuracyof forage testing nationwide.

“I want to congratulate our staff forattaining NFTA certification,” Agricul-ture Commissioner Richie Farmer said.“The Forage Testing Program providesan important service at a time when weare trying to upgrade the quality andutilization of our forages. Kentucky hastremendous potential in this area, andthe Department is dedicated to helpingour farmers reach that potential.”

The Forage Testing Program hasbeen certified for the past several years.

The Forage Testing Program for-merly was part of the Grain and HayBranch. The program now is part of theKDA’s Office of Agriculture Marketingand Product Promotion.

The Forage Testing Program was

established to provide informationabout hay produced in Kentucky forproducers as well as consumers. Thehay analysis provided by the testingprogram provides nutritional valuesused to balance rations and provideproducers with information enablingthem to promote their product to con-sumers. The end result gives producersnutritional information they can use toproduce balanced rations for their live-stock and cut production costs by usingonly what is needed.

Field staff will visit farms to collectsamples for a $10 fee per lot. Thesample is then processed and analyzedat the Department’s Frankfort lab.

Producers also can use the resultsof the analysis to market their forages.They can list the forage’s nutritional re-sults and a picture of the forage on theDepartment’s Web site.

The 100th Kentucky State Fair willattract people from throughoutKentucky to have fun, compete

and maybe even learn something.The Kentucky Department of Agri-

culture again will be greatly involved inthe festivities Aug. 19-29 at the Ken-tucky Fair and Exposition Center inLouisville. The KDA will join in on thehistorical theme of this year’s fair.

In the South Wing, the Departmentwill celebrate the his-tory of Kentucky agri-culture with a mocktobacco barn, antiquefarm equipment andother displays alongsidethe fair’s historical edu-cation and culturebooths. “We want toattract non-agriculture people, themainstream fairgoer, to our displays,”said Rayetta Boone, director of the Ken-tucky Agriculture and Environment inthe Classroom program. The old coun-try store will be back at the fair withitems from past and present.

The Department’s West Hall dis-plays will include the popular chickhatchery and the Farm and Home Safetybooth, featuring a tractor rollover simu-lator. Another display will provide infor-mation about Kentucky Proud products.

The fair will open Aug. 19 with thetraditional Commodity Breakfast. TheDepartment’s responsibilities at the fairwill begin well before that as KDA staffwill inspect all the rides and spray forflies and mosquitoes. Division of Showand Fair Promotion employees will helpwith the livestock shows.

About 650,000 people are expectedto attend the fair for the rides, food,livestock and crop shows, art, musicand other offerings.

Dr. Benjy Mikel, a professor atthe University of KentuckyCollege of Agriculture,

recently completed training to becomea USDA quality grader of beefcarcasses.

This certification will help level theplaying field between local producersand those with whom they compete tosell beef products.

“Dr. Mikel’s certification will en-able Kentucky producers who sell beefgraded Prime or Choice to market theirproducts as USDA quality graded andmake more money,” Agriculture Com-missioner Richie Farmer said. “We hopemore Kentucky beef producers will takefull advantage of this opportunity bygoing the extra mile to produce a betterproduct.”

Mikel will travel statewide to se-lected packing facilities to grade car-

casses with thefinancial assis-tance of a grantfrom the Ken-tucky Depart-ment ofAgriculture tocover travel ex-penses andUSDA’s gradingcosts.

Mikel willoffer a servicenot available inrecent years.This service willprovide the Kentucky beef industry anadditional tool to measure genetics asproducers breed for improved carcassquality.

A quality grade is a compositeevaluation of factors that affect the pal-atability of meat (juiciness and flavor).

Beef carcass quality grading is based pri-marily on two factors: 1) the degree ofmarbling; and 2) the degree of maturity.

Marbling, known as intramuscularfat, is the dispersal of fat within thelean. Graders evaluate the amount ofmarbling in the ribeye muscle after ithas been ribbed between the 12th and13th ribs. The degree of marbling is theprimary factor in determining the qual-ity grade. The four grades used in qual-ity grading are (from highest to lowestdegree of marbling) Prime, Choice, Se-lect and Standard.

The degree of maturity refers to theage of the animal from a physiologicalstandpoint since the chronological age israrely ever known. The degrees of ma-turity range from A to E. Approximatelive ages are associated with carcass ma-turity. For example, an animal graded Afor maturity would be assumed to be 9-30 months old. B maturity would be rec-

After determination of the degreeof marbling and maturity, these twofactors are combined to determine a fi-nal quality grade. Producers can use thefinal quality grade to merchandise theirproduct as a USDA Prime, Choice, Se-lect or Standard cut of meat. Producerscan now distinguish between the qual-ity of steaks and charge accordingly,adding value to the product.

third year, and the KentuckyDepartment of Agriculture’s

marketing program is bigger thanever. Delicious, nutritious, and freshKentucky Proud food products areavailable from retailers and at farm-ers’ markets all over the Common-wealth.

This past spring, more than 50greenhouses and nurseries signedup to sell Kentucky Proud flowers

You can findthese products at some ofKentucky’s 93 farmers’ markets.Next to those fresh, tasty vegetableswe’ve all come to expect are jellies,jams, sauces, salsas, and cannedvegetables. Some markets offerflowers, crafts, and numerous otheritems. A few markets with refrig-eration units sell locally grownbeef. Kentucky even has fourmarkets that sell bison meat.

Farmers’ markets are a greatdeal all the way around. Consumers

get fresh, good-tasting foods and thechance to meet the people whomade them. Growers get a largershare of the food dollar. Everyonehas a good time in the sunshine andfresh air. Everyone wins.

Each day, fifth generation dairyfarmer Stuart Mattingly ofMarion County makes a unique

In 1999, Mattingly – a full-timefarmer who also loves playing on theInternet when milking chores allow –created his fun-farming site for chil-dren. With full credit to Bart Simpsonfor its paraphrasedslogan, Mattingly’ssite allows youngpeople to select acow and then,through a cyber-newsletter, receivereports on itsprogress as far asmilk production,calving, etc.

Aside from thee-newsletter, “Havea Cow Dude!” fea-tures a spotlighted “Top Producer(cow) of the Month,” farm trivia quiz,an “Ask the Farmer” and “Ask theFarmer’s Wife” opportunity, and muchmore.

“But when we did an online surveyof who was enjoying the site, my wifeGrace and I made a somewhat surpris-ing discovery,” Mattingly said. “A lotmore people ages 20 to 80 years werelogging on than young children. Ofcourse, teachers may be among thatgroup – they love this site, they’ve toldme – and kids might not respond tosuch a survey, but we found a lot ofpeople who grew up on a farm andlater left it are enjoying the site.

“Now that really made us have acow!”

Working in the Kentucky dairy in-dustry has not been easy the past sev-eral years, Mattingly admitted. Heowns the 200-acre “homeplace” wherehe grew up and now lives as well as an-other farm with 140 acres. He ownsabout 85 milking cows and about thesame number of heifers.

In addition to his dairy operation,the Marion County producer grows to-bacco, corn for silage and alfalfa forhay. He “double-crops” his cornfieldwith wheat, which is also used for hay.

“Dairy farming has always been ahard life,” Mattingly said. “I like towork hard, but I also like to get paid.That is not always the case in the dairybusiness.

“Last year, I decided I had to eitherget bigger or get out of the business. Ibought out one man’s herd of 25 milk-ing cows. I said to myself, ‘You eitherhave to milk 100 cows a day or you’ll bemilking none at all.’”

A dairy farm, he said, is a “familyaffair,” so Stuart and Grace are assistedon their farm by sons John Stuart, Craigand Benjamin. The couple’s oldestchild, daughter Ann-Hill, is a student atthe University of Kentucky.

Although his e-newsletter’s sub-scription list is up to almost 2,000 thesedays, an expanded dairy farm does not

allow StuartMattingly the timeto enjoy the com-puter as he wouldlike. The newsletterhas gone fromweekly to monthly,and those askingquestions of the“farmer” may haveto wait a bit longerthan a year ago, hesaid.

“The mostcommon question I have been askedover the Web site is, ‘Do all cows havehorns?’” Mattingly said. “The answer,of course, is no – but it has nothing todo with male or female, as somepeople think. No, some breedsnowadays have no horns; it has justbeen bred out of them. Others do havethem, but they are polled [clipped] atan early age.

“One of the most difficult ques-tions from ‘Ask the Farmer’ is, ‘Whatabout vegetarians?’ Now, I don’t raisebeef cattle, but this lady was referringto those people who do not consumeany animal products, including milk orcheese. I said, ‘That is fine. That is anindividual’s choice, but that choicedoes not put dollars in my family’spocket.”

One question Mattingly is having atougher time answering for himself isabout the future of dairy farming inKentucky.

“You know, the idea of the familydairy farm is becoming a thing of thepast,” he said. “Farming has becomemore of a big business, and it’s gettingtougher for the smaller guys like us tostay profitable. But, God willing, myfamily will be milking cows here for an-other hundred years.”

A Louisville garden center haswon the top prize in the Ken-tucky Department of

Agriculture’s Retail Garden CenterDisplay Contest.

Boone Gardiner Garden Centerwas awarded the $1,000 top prize. Twogarden centers each took home second-place awards of $550, and three gardencenters each won $300 for third place.Participating businesses were chal-lenged to use Kentucky-grown plantmaterial to create attractive, imagina-tive displays that promote the KentuckyProud marketing program.

“The top six awards represent Ken-tucky garden centers from RowanCounty to Calloway County,” Agricul-ture Commissioner Richie Farmer said.“All the participants are to be com-mended for their creativity and theirdedication to using Kentucky Proudnursery plants.

“Kentucky Proud plants are likelyto do better because they are bettersuited to Kentucky’s soil and climate.We encourage consumers to look for theKentucky Proud logo at their local gar-den centers.”

The Boone Gardiner display wasbased on the theme “Kentucky Color”in response to consumer demand forcolorful plants during the spring. Theplants were grown by garden centerstaff as well as Star Farms of Shelbyvilleand Earl Thieneman Greenhouses inLouisville.

“Many customers have said thatthey have seen the Kentucky Proudcommercial campaign and have beenvery receptive to our efforts to marketlocal horticultural products,” the gar-den center wrote in a letter that accom-

panied its entry. “Our customers arepleasantly surprised when they dis-cover that Kentucky grows so manyflowering plants.”

The second-place awards went toBeans to Blossoms in Murray andAllyson’s Greenhouse in Berry.Hillcrest Nursery in Richmond, RainGreenhouse in Clearfield, and Wilson’sNursery in Frankfort took third place.

The $3,000 prize money wasfunded by a grant from the KentuckyHorticulture Council.

The Kentucky Department ofAgriculture’s Office of Agriculture Mar-keting and Product Promotion judgedthe 20 entries. Michael Judge, executivedirector of the KDA marketing office,supervised the judging, and marketingspecialist Kelly Ludwig tallied thevotes. Photos of each participant’s dis-play were mounted and identified onlyby number for judging.

Entries were judged on the basis ofuse of Kentucky-grown plant material(50 percent), promotional efforts to sellKentucky Proud (30 percent), the vari-ety of plants featured (10 percent) andcreativity (10 percent).

Participating garden centers wererequired to showcase their displays forat least 10 consecutive days duringMay. They each received a free Ken-tucky Proud banner and signage for usein the displays. They submitted picturesof their displays and a written sum-mary that included the Kentucky-grown items they used and where theycame from.

A record 96 farmers’ marketsare operating in Kentucky thisyear, offering a greater variety

of Kentucky-produced items than everbefore.

Agriculture Commissioner RichieFarmer urges consumers to take advan-tage of the opportunity to buy fresh,high-quality, good-tasting productsmade or grown right here at home.

“Farmers’ markets are great forboth the producer and the consumer,”Commissioner Farmer said. “They givefarmers a way to diversify from tobaccowith low input costs and low risk. Con-sumers are happy because they can buylocal, fresh products while helping theircommunity. The Kentucky Departmentof Agriculture is committed to helpingour farmers’ markets grow and helpingconsumers find fresh, nutritious andgood-tasting Kentucky Proud foods.”

Growers of all ages and farm sizeshave rekindled interest in farmers’ mar-kets statewide. Many retired people arereturning to farming while others aretrying to get a start at it.

As a result, farmers’ markets arebecoming big business in Kentucky.Projected gross sales at Kentucky farm-ers’ markets for 2004 are $5.2-$5.4 mil-lion, according to University ofKentucky economists who studied theeconomic impact of farmers’ markets inthe Commonwealth. In 2003, Kentuckyfarmers’ markets grossed $4.8 million,20 percent more than estimated mid-way through the year. Average salesper market were about $55,000 last year.About 20 percent of gross sales of Ken-tucky produce occur at farmers’markets.

Boone and Scott County had thehighest sales per vendor reported in2003, with Lexington and FranklinCounty following. Farmers’ marketslocated near or in metropolitan areastend to have the best sales, but small-

town markets also get good communitysupport, the UK economists found.

Alongside the customary produce,consumers will find flowers, jellies, jams,sauces, salsa, crafts, gift baskets andmany other items at the farmers’ market.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are stillthe most popular items, said JanetEaton, farmers’ market coordinator forthe Kentucky Department of Agricul-ture. Non-traditional items are doingwell, she said.

Shoppers can find assorted variet-ies of heirloom tomatoes and peppersand more unusual items such as paw-paws and rhubarb. Some farmers’ mar-kets offer crafts such as gourds andherbal wreathes.

Fourteen Kentucky farmers’ mar-kets sell meat from refrigeration units atthe markets. Four of those markets offerbison meat.

Kentucky Proud jams, jellies, salsasand other processed foods are available

at nearly half the state’s farmers’ mar-kets, Eaton said. The General Assemblypassed legislation that allows producersto process their foods at home. That hasincreased the number of products soldand the producers’ ability to sell them,Eaton said. Producers can take homegreen beans that weren’t sold, can them,and sell them later.

The Commodity SupplementalFood Program supplies nourish-ing meals to thousands of needy

families throughout the Common-wealth. Generous citizens – includingsome of the clients – give from theirown bounty to make other people’slives a little better.

People bring clothes, stuffed toys,books, magazines and other items to theCSFP warehouse in Louisville to sharewith clients. The toys are given away asgifts during the holiday season. One

woman picks up bread and rolls fromher neighborhood supermarket andtakes them to the CSFP facility andother service offices. A client bringsvegetables from his garden.

The program serves nearly 17,000clients out of the main warehouse inLouisville and through five other loca-tions throughout the state, making it thelargest program of its kind in the eight-state southern region.

The Kentucky program wasawarded a Certificate of Excellence atthe National Commodity Supplemental

Food Program conference in Februaryin Washington, D.C. Only seven of the32 states that participate in the CSFPprogram received the award, which rec-ognized states that achieved a net in-crease of 5,000 or more clients between2002 and 2003.

Besides the Louisville warehouse,the CSFP program is administeredthrough God’s Pantry in Lexington,Dare to Care in Louisville, America’sSecond Harvest of Kentucky’s Heart-land in Elizabethtown, the NorthernKentucky Area Development District

and the Purchase Area DevelopmentDistrict. Those organizations distributefood through approximately 85 smalleragencies.

The Senior Farmers’ Market pro-gram returns this year at locationsacross the state. The program, whichdebuted last year in Louisville, allowsolder people in need to redeem SeniorFarmers’ Market Nutrition Programcoupons for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Kentuckians pitch in to help neighbors in need

An apple a day keeps the doctoraway. It also allows Kentuckyfarmers to make a profit if

they are patient and savvy. Unlike to-bacco in its golden day, apple or-chards are not overnight agriculturalmoneymakers. A commitment togradual crop changeover and a certainbusiness acumen are required totransform brown-leaf earnings intothose that are sweet and delicious.

Bill Jackson, owner of Jackson’s Or-chard and Nursery in Bowling Green,was ahead of the curve. Thirty-eightyears ago, he began planting apple treesalong with the ancient peach trees thatalready were growing on his farm.

Apples and peaches have madeJackson’s Orchard a centerpiece of agri-cultural progress in Warren County,where the family grows 20 different vari-eties of apples and 18 varieties ofpeaches. From the green Lodi cookingapples harvested in early June to thehard, tart Granny Smith apples picked inmid-October, Jackson has become a well-recognized authority on the apple busi-ness in the Commonwealth. And theDepartment of Agriculture’s KentuckyProud marketing campaign has broughtthe fame of both Jackson and his prod-ucts to new heights.

“This [Kentucky Proud] programhas done wonders for producersaround Kentucky, and that has been thecase with my apples and my peachesand the products I make from them,”said Jackson, who runs the orchardwith wife Shirley and daughter CathyOtis. “The campaign has certainly in-creased the awareness of shoppers, whoare actually now looking for productsgrown in Kentucky.”

Apple cider, preserves, jams andjellies, apple butter and relishes also canbe found at the farm store. The first im-age visitors to the operation see is a ver-

sion of KDA’s Kentucky Proud logo atthe bottom of the uphill farm entrance.

“Apple orchards are a five- to six-year commitment for a farmer,” Jacksonsaid. “You plant the trees and then waitthat long before you harvest the fruit.You have to think investment when youbuy into apples. You have to go intoapples slowly, replacing whatever yourcash crop is – tobacco, grain, beef cattle– with apple trees.

“Growing apples is a real commit-ment of time and of life. During theyears when you are not harvestingthose golden delicious, you have to beharvesting something or you and yourfamily don’t eat.”

Jackson also makes cider for 11different orchards in south-central Ken-tucky in a facility built with tobaccosettlement funds.

Jackson worked with U.S. Depart-ment of Agriculture offices in PulaskiCounty, Ill., then came to BowlingGreen to join FMC Corporation as afarm chemicals salesman.

“I was approached by one of mycustomers, Ed Hudgens, who had afarm with very, very old peach trees onit,” Jackson said. “I signed a contract tobuy it in 1966, and we began plantingnew peach trees and then apple trees onthe spread. This area is good for applesand even better for peaches.”

The 40-acre peach orchard becamea 75-acre fruit enterprise: 40 acres ofapple trees and 35 acres of peach trees.Jackson began apple production in 1975and started selling cider in 1979. Thir-teen years ago, he began his farm’s fa-mous fall festivals that have broughtagri-tourism dollars to his orchard andto his community.

“It’s all a gradual thing,” Jacksonsaid. “It’s something you have to plan,not just go into it looking for a quickreturn. There are very few things in ag-riculture that you do not have to workhard for.”

Fewer Kentuckians are growingtobacco, but more are producingmeat goats and vegetables,

the 2002 Census of Agriculture says.The total market value of Kentucky

farm products in 2002 was $3.08 billion,slightly lower than the 1997 total of$3.16 billion, according to the census,which was released this past spring bythe National Agricultural StatisticsService. The total market value of farmproduct nationwide was $200.6 billion,down $734 million from 1997.

The number of tobacco farms in2002 was 29,237, down 38 percent from1997, when the previous agriculturecensus was taken. Harvested acres oftobacco fell 56 percent compared with1997 as quotas were cut by more thanhalf during that time.

Meat goat sales in 2002 jumped tomore than 42,000 head from 5,000 headin 1997. Kentucky ranked fifth in thenation in meat goat inventory and thirdin sales.

The number of farms harvestingvegetables and melons for sale in-creased 31 percent between 1997 and2002, with a 53 percent increase in har-vested acres.

Kentucky continues to have thelargest beef cow inventory east of theMississippi River, with 1.1 million head.Total cattle inventory, 2.4 million head,was down 3 percent from 1997.

The number of women consideredprincipal farm operators in Kentuckydecreased 4 percent from 1997. Womenmade up 25 percent of the agriculturalproduction population in 2002. The av-erage age of a farm operator was 55, upone year from 1997.

Other significant findings of the2002 Census of Agriculture included:

• The number of farms in Ken-tucky decreased 5 percent, while land infarms declined 1 percent.

• 67 percent of Kentucky farmssold less than $10,000 worth of agricul-tural products in 2002, compared with59 percent in 1997.

• Broiler production farms morethan doubled from 1997. The numberof broilers sold in 2002 was almost2 1/2 times that of 1997.

• Corn acres were down 8 percent,and soybean acres increased 5 percentfrom 1997.

For more than a decade, ClayCounty Judge-Executive JamesGarrison and his two sons, along

with a family friend, have venturedaway from the coal business in ClayCounty and shifted their efforts intocatfish farming. They are amongmany producers who have entered theaquaculture industry in recent years,making it one of the fastest-growingsectors in all of agriculture.

Garrison adamantly wants othersto get involved in aquaculture in ClayCounty, which has a high unemploy-ment rate. Much of the land in ClayCounty was involved in the coal indus-try and now is not useful for crops orlivestock. Garrison believes there isnothing better for the land than to build

ponds and start an aquaculture pro-gram to benefit the county as well asthe aquaculture industry.

“Much opportunity lies within theaquaculture industry within ClayCounty,” he said. “If people would uti-lize it, it could benefit the county andthose who put time and effort into it tomake it a success.”

Garrison and his partners begantheir business with only two ponds andeventually worked their way up to 10ponds and about 30 acres total of water.

With each pond harboring around6,000 catfish per acre, this catfish farmproduces three-pound fish every twoyears.

Unlike many catfish producers, thisfarm also hatches its eggs. Hatchingyour own eggs provides the advantage

The pay lakes surrounding ClayCounty are the Garrisons’ primary mar-ket. The catfish sell for an average of$1.25 per pound. Most of these lakeslike to receive 5,000 to 8,000 pounds, or1,500 to 2,500 three-pound catfish, perweek. Landowners also buy catfishfrom Garrison to stock their own ponds.

Garrison said he and his partnersplan to have about 250 acres of waterand are also considering producingfreshwater prawn in separate ponds.

A Kentucky 4-H member has earned a place among an elite group ofnational winners in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awardscompetition.

Allison Hammer, 17, a recent graduate of Monroe County HighSchool, has been recognized by Prudential Financial Inc. and the NationalAssociation of Secondary School Principals as a Distinguished Finalist.Her award is for planning and raising funds for an all-terrain vehiclesafety camp for youth in her county after two of her friends lost theirlives in an ATV accident.

“Allison recruited a committee of volunteers, secured a grant andother donations for the camp and coordinated the entire event,” said Su-san Guffey, Monroe County Cooperative Extension agent for 4-H youthdevelopment.

Hammer is one of only four young Kentuckians, and one of only 236students nationwide, to receive the honor.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will hold two listening sessionsnear Kentucky in August to discuss the development, structure andimplementation of a national animal identification program for all live-stock and poultry animals.

Sessions will be held in Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 18 and Joplin, Mo.,Aug. 27. They are among 11 public forums scheduled between July 10and Aug. 31 throughout the United States.

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is working toimplement a nationwide system to quickly and efficiently trace back dis-eased or potentially diseased animals. A premise identification systemthat will allow for the beginning of pilot programs to test identificationsystems is to be completed this summer.

The former Division of Environmental Assistance and Division ofPesticide Regulation have been combined into the Division of Environ-mental Services as a result of Kentucky Department of Agriculture reor-ganization.

The division regulates Kentucky’s pest control companies, lawn careindustries, pesticide dealers and applicators; operates training, licensingand certification programs, and registers pesticide products that are soldor distributed statewide. It also helps agricultural operations and localgovernments control weeds and pests, and administers the Department’schemical collection and Rinse and Return recycling programs.

Warren Beeler of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture served onan ethics panel during the National Junior Swine Association’s NationalYouth Leadership Conference May 20-23 in Dayton, Ohio.

The panel challenged youth to make ethical decisions in the swineindustry and in life. Beeler is assistant director of the Division of Animaland Aquaculture Production.

The conference attracted 43 youth from 14 states. It was sponsoredby the National Swine Registry, National Pork Board, Indiana YorkshireBreeders, Inc., Top Cut Show Pig Sires, Kent Feeds, Inc., PennerHampshires, Lean Value Sires, Akey/Sunglo Feeds, The Mitchell Insur-ance Agency, Just Charmed and the Lafayette Breakfast Optimist Club.

The 2004 National Angus Conference and Tour will be Sept. 14-17 inRoanoke, Va. The annual event includes a one-day conference and two-daytour for cattle producers wishing to learn more about important advance-ments in the industry.

The conference, hosted by the American Angus Association and theVirginia Angus Association, begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 15. The conference willinclude presenters from Virginia Tech, the U.S. Department of Agriculture,the American Angus Association, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Associa-tion, businesses and Angus farms.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health In-spection Service (APHIS) announced in June that a toll–free number to re-port high–risk cattle in the United States has been established. The toll–freenumber for the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance pro-gram is 1–866–536–7593.

As part of its expanded BSE surveillance effort, APHIS will workclosely with cattle producers, renderers, veterinarians, and others to obtainsamples from high–risk cattle targeted in this program. Callers reportinghigh–risk cattle will connect with a local APHIS office that will provide ad-ditional information. USDA will help defray costs incurred by industriesparticipating in the surveillance program for such items as transportation,disposal and storage, and tested carcasses.

APHIS’ enhanced BSE surveillance effort aims to test as many high–risk cattle as possible within the next 12–18 months.
