Reader’s Workshop at Drouin South PS
Just a reminder to all parents that our Reader’s Workshops take place in all classrooms from 9.00am each morning. All students enter the classrooms and are ready for learning as soon as possible after 9.00am. The Reader’s Workshop approach has seen great improvements across the school in Reading achievement of students since we have introduced it this time last year. A Reader’s Workshop consists of several lesson parts. These include: 1. Introduction and Explicit Teaching. The teacher discusses with the students the lesson intention and what students need to achieve to be successful at this. The teacher then uses a carefully selected text to model and demonstrate how this particular reading skills or strategy is used. 2. Independent Reading with Support Students read independently through texts that they have selected, with teacher guidance, and spend time practising their independent reading skills. Teachers confer 1:1 with students during this part of the workshop to provide positive and constructive feedback to the reader. 3. Reading Tasks and Guided Reading Whilst independently reading, students are required to complete a related task or a task that involves responding to the text in some way. This may be on sticky notes, in Readers’ Notebooks or on some type of thinking organiser. It may also be in discussion form. At this time, the teacher generally works with students in a group to focus on a specific reading strategy aimed at the needs of the group. 4. Reflection Time Students and teachers come back together as a whole group to reflect on what they have learned. The lesson intent is revisited and the success criteria discussed as students talk about their learnings from the lesson. We welcome parents to discuss our Readers’ Workshop approach to reading with class teachers. Parents can also assist by ensuring that children have reading time at home each day, discussing what the learning intention for the day was and by ensuring students are at school, ready to learn by 9.00am each day.
