’’We often think of Jesus as a great spiritual teacher, and appropriately so. But much of what he said is of such practical value, too! He shows such insight and awareness of how we human beings are, and gives us hints and tips about developing healthy relationships. My guess is that he did so because “people getting along” is an important part of what God cares about.

Here’s a good one: “Settle matters quickly with your adversary…”

(Matthew 5:25). This doesn’t mean “roll over”, or “give in”, but it does have to do with not letting things fester. When feelings are hurt, unkind words are said, or when misunderstandings happen, our human response is often to not address the situation. In such a case, one or both of the offending / offended parties usually think, broods, stews, and grows more resentful. Best to “settle matters quickly…”, even if it’s just saying, “I want you to know I’m sorry this happened. Maybe we can discuss it later.”

Seems to me that one of the clearly-taught instruction for living in Christian community is “take initiative”. We

are instructed to be eager in seeking reconciliation, in forgiving, and in showing kindness. Disagreements and difficulties happen in all relationships: church, family, spouse, siblings, and friends. Sometimes damage occurs not only because of the original issue, but because of delayed response. The Holy Spirit can give us the power (and even the willingness!) to become those who take the initiative in doing what we can to put relationships right. Don’t wait, be the first to settle matters quickly.

See you Sunday,Kevin Tully

YOUTH CONFIRMATION MEALSAt every infant baptism, we affirm the duty of each member of the congregation to assist in raising up children in the church as a child of God. An important step in this process is the confirmation class we offer our youth as we prepare them to assume responsibilities as full members of the church. Confirmation will be held each Sunday starting November 19, 2017 and ending March 25, 2018.

You are invited to participate with our youth in this step of their spiritual journey this fall by feeding them lunch on a Sunday of your choice. You may do so by bringing lunch for them, providing gift cards which can be used to purchase lunch or by contributing cash. Sign up in the Atrium.

CJ was raised in Gilmer, Texas where she spent loads of time learning and worshipping at First United Methodist Church. Her college years were spent at Texas A&M University and Texas A&M Wesley Foundation. She says that the Wesley Foundation

taught her about service projects and true acceptance by the church.

After college, CJ taught junior high and high school math in Center Point, Bandera, LaGrange and Giddings, Texas. She also worked in Christian education in United Methodist churches in Boerne, Bandera, Kerrville, La Grange, and Mason, Texas. CJ was very active with

United Methodist Women while living in Texas-she served as a conference officer for eight years and a district officer for four years. She learned about the International Christmas Market through UMW and has been continuing that ministry for over 25 years.

CJ moved to Bartlesville in 2005 to teach math at Nowata High School. She now teaches Geometry at Bartlesville High School. She joined Bartlesville First Church in July 2006 and began working with the children’s music in August 2006. She now works as an associate in Children’s Ministry helping in many different ways. She has

been a site coordinator/supervisor for Project Transformation since it started in Bartlesville. CJ is part of the missions committee, children’s council, United Methodist Women, and the Sanctuary Choir at Bartlesville First Church. CJ’s family includes her cats Milo and Tenny.
