Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection

Banquets! Food! Dancing Rejoicing together! These are the themes of our readings today. For our Jewish people, these themes meant so much because of the years of not having enough food, the years in which they felt they could not rejoice together and the years when they were actively persecuted. Isaiah sees this great banquet as a vindication for his people. Everything will be put right and all the people on earth will be able to see and acknowledge that God was indeed working in this people. The Gospel comes to us from a slightly different point of view! Those who had first been invited to the feast/banquet did not come and so the one who gives banquets has to go and look for people who want to share in the feast. The Gospel is complicated by the king coming in at the end and finding a person without a proper banquet garment and having him thrown out! We have the Gospel as it stands, however, and we must try to make sense out of it as it is. So, we might read this Gospel as an invitation to accept God’s invitation to share His life. In that sense, we must ask ourselves: Do I accept such an invitation? What effects does the invitation have in my life? What do I do when the going gets rough? Perhaps today we can pray that our hearts will always be open to hear the invitation and to respond to it. And we can work at loving others in the same way that God loves us!

In Christ, Deacon Dean Dobbins

Vigésimo octavo domingo de tiempo ordinario

Banquetes ¡Comida! Bailando Regocijando juntos!
