Thoughts from Our President By Carol Jones

We’re so lucky to have two excellent places to meet. Just like the 1%, we have luxurious winter quarters, and a waterfront place for the summer, free of jet skis, mosquitos, and salt water taffy. Our

final Union Lake get-together featured perfect weather, enthusiastic racers, great food (thanks, Harold!), and many laughs. This year’s Messabout was a big success. The key ingredient was, as always, the

friendship and camaraderie of the participants, which extends beyond mere boat ownership. We’re a gathering of old and new friends, old and new watercraft, old and new jokes. Thank you all for being

there, in spirit if not in person. The party continues at St. Michaels in a few weeks, with more old friends, watercraft, and jokes. Crabs and sea chanties will add to the festivities. See you there!

TSCA Meeting Notes By Carl Weissinger Secretary

We held an abridged meeting of the Delaware River TSCA Chapter at our annual Messabout at Union Lake on September 14. We decided to donate$150. to the crab fund of the Mid Atlantic Small Craft Festival. Tom Shepherd reminded us to honor our Commitment of $100 annually to the John Gardner fund we now owe $200. Paul Skalka and Pete Peters have been talking with John Brady about how we might best contribute to the Independence Seaport Museum in way of a thank you for our free meeting space. John will get back to them with some ideas. George Loos suggested the museum might want to work on the tuckup. (The stern post has some rot) Finally, the Riverview Restaurant in Bristol will get back to Paul about a holiday party.

Trip on the Rhine By Frank Stauss In September Mary and I were fortunate to take a Viking River Cruise along the Rhine River in Europe. We travelled from Lucerne, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Netherlands and had a wonderful time. I am passing along some photographs I took that might be of interest to our members.

Surprise Discovery By Andy Slavinskas

In early August, we made a stop in Belfast, Maine, and noticed that Silent Maid was hauled at Front Street Shipyard. In checking local results, I see that she won her class on corrected time at the Eggemmoggin Reach Regatta.

Attached should be an image of her in Belfast. I believe when I took the photo, the ERR was complete, and that she was getting packed up to travel back south.

From the Snuggery

By Frank Stauss We have a very interesting speaker at our upcoming October chapter meeting. Jim Rubilli will be speaking on the subject of Canals of Pennsylvania 1792-1931. Our state was once crisscrossed by a network of over 1600 miles of man-made waterways. These pathways played a key role in America’s expansion westward. This talk will cover the development, heyday, and decline of this now forgotten means of transportation, economic growth, and communication. October 14 is the date. Mark it on your calendar. Just in case you were wondering what the nautical term Dressing Down means. Thin and worn sails were often treated with oil or wax to renew their effectiveness. This was called “dressing down”. An officer or sailor who was reprimanded or scolded was also said to have received a “dressing down”. Now you know.

The Delaware River Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association works to preserve and continue the living traditions, skills, lore and legends surrounding working and pleasure craft whose origins predate the maritime gasoline engine. It encourages the design, construction and use of these boats. Whether you

have an interest in traditional boat building, messing about in small boats, or helping preserve our maritime heritage come join us and share the

camaraderie of kindred spirits.
