Loving God, I ask you to guide me

during this important election season:

Help me to understand the Gospels, in which

Jesus Christ reveals his path of love, mercy and

compassion, especially toward those who are

poor, sick or struggling in any way.

Instruct me on what the church teaches on the

important issues of our day: abortion, racism,

migration, war and peace, health care, the death

penalty, economic justice, care for the environ-

ment and on all those questions that I must pon-

der with your help.

Enable me to form my conscience so that I may

vote wisely.

Loving God, I ask you to help me to live

peacefully with others:

Allow me to be open to the opinions of others

with whom I disagree.

Fill me with a spirit of charity toward those who

may oppose me.

Give me patience in times of struggle.

Loving God, I ask you to help me stand with

those who are marginalized or persecuted:

Increase my courage so that I can stand up in

times of danger.

Create in me a new heart that I might be brave in

times of turmoil.

Make me someone who is ready to care for, ad-

Yesterday, President Trump announced on Twit-

ter that he was leaving Walter Reed National

Military Medical Center, where he was receiving

treatment for his infection with the coronavirus,

a disease that has killed over 200,000 people in

the United States.

In his tweet, the president wrote: “Don’t be

afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life.”

Many people have been asking, sincerely, how

President Trump’s comment, “Don’t be afraid of

Covid,” differs from Jesus’ message to “Be not

afraid.” Here are some thoughts.

First of all, Jesus often told his followers “Be not

afraid.” In fact, the phrase brackets his earthly life.

The Angel Gabriel says that to the Virgin Mary at

the Annunciation, the beginning of Jesus’ earthly

life (Lk 1:30). And after his Resurrection, the risen

Christ says the same thing to his frightened disci-

ples, near the end of his earthly life (Mt 28:10).

It’s one of the very few phrases Jesus utters several

times in the Gospels. He frequently encourages his

followers to turn away from fear and rely on God.

But Jesus is not telling his disciples, or us, to ig-

nore the reality of human life. God does not ask us

to check our brains at the door and be reckless

about our bodies. That’s not what it means to be a

believer. We don’t jump off of tall buildings ex-

pecting not to get hurt. We don’t drink poison ex-

pecting not to get sick. We don’t touch a hot stove

expecting not to be burned.

God does not ask us to check our brains at the

door and be reckless about our bodies.

God gave us brains for a reason. For that matter,

God gave us reason for a reason. So “Don’t be

afraid of Covid” not only makes no sense, but it’s

dangerous. Like Jesus, we have human bodies that

must be cared for. There are also others whom we

have to protect from harm, from illness and from

death. That is part of being pro-life: reverencing

lives, both yours and those of others.

That means taking the necessary precautions to

keep yourself healthy: going to the dentist every

few months, getting an annual physical, taking

medicine when needed. Today, it means, more spe-

cifically, taking precautions against Covid-19:

wearing a mask, maintaining social distance, wash-

ing your hands and quarantining if you are ill or if

you’ve recently come in contact with someone who

may have been infected.

And yes, that means being reasonably afraid of

Covid. It makes sense to be afraid of, for example,

chickenpox, measles and meningitis. It makes

sense to be afraid of diseases that can kill or cause

long-term disabilities. And it makes sense both to

treat these illnesses medically if you contract them

and to be careful not to pass those illnesses to oth-

ers.

Sometimes being afraid is both reasonable and

charitable.

Jesus said, many times, “Be not afraid.” But his

whole life was about giving life, not taking it. And

by not taking precautions against Covid, you are

endangering lives, both yours and those of others.

Trust in God, but listen to your doctors, too.

En su discurso este viernes a los miembros del Círcu-

lo de San Pedro, el Papa Francisco alentó la caridad y

la solidaridad en tiempos del coronavirus, conside-

rando que las repercusiones de la pandemia “serán

terribles”.

El Círculo de San Pedro es una organización que se

encarga de sostener y asistir a los grupos sociales

más vulnerables a través de diversos proyectos en

Roma y en otros lugares.

“La pandemia, con la necesidad de un distanciamien-

to interpersonal, los ha llamado a repensar las moda-

lidades concretas de las obras de caridad que habi-

tualmente realizan en favor de los pobres de Roma”,

dijo el Papa.

“A las necesidades de las personas a las que servís

habitualmente se ha añadido la necesidad de respon-

der a las necesidades urgentes de tantas familias, que

se han encontrado de la noche a la mañana en apuros

económicos. Y no hay que asustarse: habrá cada vez

más porque las repercusiones de la pandemia serán

terribles”, destacó.

El Papa Francisco explicó también que “a una situa-

ción excepcional no se puede dar una respuesta habi-

tual, sino que se requiere una respuesta nueva y dife-

rente. Para ello es necesario tener un corazón que se-

pa ‘ver’ las heridas de la sociedad y manos creativas

en la caridad activa. Un corazón que vea y unas ma-

nos que hagan. Estos dos elementos son importantes

para que una acción caritativa siempre sea fecunda”.

“En primer lugar, es urgente identificar, en la ciudad

que se está transformando rápidamente, las nuevas

formas de pobreza. La pobreza, habitualmente, es

pudorosa, tiene pudor: hace falta ir a descubrir dónde

está”.

El Papa resaltó luego que “las nuevas formas de po-

breza, ustedes bien lo saben, son tantas: pobreza ma-

terial, pobreza humana, pobreza social. Está en noso-

tros verlas con los ojos del corazón. Hay que saber

mirar las heridas humanas con el corazón para

‘preocuparse de todo corazón’ por la vida del otro”.

“Así ya no es solo un extraño necesitado de ayuda,

sino, antes que nada, un hermano, un hermano que

pide amor. Y solo cuando nos preocupamos de todo

corazón por alguien podemos responder a esta expec-

tativa. Es la experiencia de la misericordia”.

El Pontífice indicó asimismo que “un lugar privile-

giado para experimentarlo es el sacramento de la Re-

conciliación. Cuando presentamos nuestras miserias

al Señor, nos envuelve la misericordia del Padre. Y

es esta misericordia la que estamos llamados a vivir y

a dar. Siempre Dios, nosotros y los demás”.

“Los animo a continuar con empeño y alegría vues-

tras obras de caridad, siempre atentos y dispuestos a

responder con valentía a las necesidades de los po-

bres. No se cansen de pedir esta gracia al Espíritu

Santo en la oración personal y comunitaria”.

El Papa Francisco agradeció al Círculo de San Pedro

por su labor que es “una expresión concreta de la ca-

ridad del Papa que se preocupa por la pobreza de Ro-

ma. De los pobres y de las pobrezas. Les agradezco

el Óbolo de San Pedro que recogen todos los años en

las iglesias de la ciudad y que hoy me ofrecen”.

ST. MARK PARISH COOKBOOK PLANNING HAS BEGUN! St. Mark’s is creating a custom cookbook featuring favorite recipes from you, our parishioners! Our cook-

books will be professionally published and are sure to be a treasured keepsake for us all. Money raised will

be used for the general needs of our parish.

We would like everyone to participate!

All recipes submitted in Spanish will be translated and printed in English. (We may consider doing another

cookbook in Spanish later on if there is an interest in one.)

Here is what we need you to do!

Since we know it’s hard to choose you favorites, please submit 3 to 5 recipes, but more will be happily ac-

cepted! Many recipes from our parishioners will ensure that our cookbook is a success.

Hand written recipes are sometimes difficult to read. Typed recipes are preferred but a photo copy will

work too.

WHAT DOES TOMORROW HOLD? What does tomorrow hold for us? What is there to hope for? Often our imagination projects into the future. As children we won-dered “What will it be like when we grow up?” Parents promised new freedoms and new possibilities “When you are older.” Human nature seems to live in a vital tension between the Already and the Not Yet.

As adults we indeed learn to pare down and focus our hopes and fantasies into more precise, accessible channels with the passing of years. But we are still caught up in fantasizing what lies ahead - - not just for ourselves and family, but for the wider society and world. In the midst of a pandemic, we wonder if we will remain safe. Amid political unrest, we worry that the community will be able to heal itself. What steps in science and technology lie just around the corner? How will society adapt between now and 2040? The changing balance between richer and poorer countries; the unstable equality climate in our own nation; proposed educational changes and law reforms; new employment initiatives; provision of better medical care ---- all are subject to our analysis and hopeful projec-tions.

Today’s scripture invites us all to raise our sights, and our hearts, when thinking of the future. Beyond this present life, God has planned a great future for all of us. Isaiah’s prophecy of the heavenly banquet is an invitation to think of our eternal destiny. There is more to live for than what we see in this present world, interesting and challenging and troubled as it is. What really counts is whether we succeed in reaching our eternal happiness with God.

The eternal banquet must not be thought of as so much “pie in the sky”! Christians don’t expect to literally sit down to an everlasting meal, an eternal eating and drinking festival somewhere in the stratosphere. While heaven is described in vivid images, we realize that “eye has not seen, nor can the human heart imagine, what God has prepared for those that love Him”.(I Cor 2:9) Still, the banquet at-mosphere of conviviality is a good image for that loving communion with God and with others towards which our lives are destined.

Jesus emphasizes that this banquet is open to all people: indeed God sends his messengers to search out all the highways and byways in order to fill his house with guests. It is comforting to realize God wants us to be saved, perhaps even more than we do ourselves. At the same time, however, there is a special wedding-garment that must be worn. This, I think, is the level of personal commitment re-quired in order to accept our place at the table. God’s invitation is there for the taking, but we weave and construct the necessary gar-ment by the quality of our daily interactions with God and with others. In a sense, we hold tomorrow in our own hands, as with the help of God’s grace we build our eternal future.

PINK RIBBON CAMPAIGN On the week-end of October 24th & 25th,

we will continue our tradition of the Pink Ribbon Cam-

paign. This will be our 7th year for doing the Pink Rib-

bon Campaign. You may wonder why do we continue

to do this. The answer is because so many people

continue to suffer from cancer, die from cancer or all

of us know some one who has cancer...people who

we dearly love in our own parish family struggle with

cancer. We continue to care ....we continue to pray, we continue to want to raise aware-

ness and we continue to wish for a cure! On this week-end at all of the Masses, we invite

everyone to pray. for all victims of cancer. Because of the coronavirus we will do this dif-

ferently this year. We will have a small tree in which there will have pink ribbons already

tied on it to symbolize all of our prayers and love near the sanctuary. We place our hope,

trust and prayers in His God for his healing love and compassion upon all who suffer

from cancer and we pray for a cure.

presente ahora y siempre porque con

el Padre y el Espíritu Santo eres Dios,

y Dios está por todos lados en todo momento.

Pero por tu grandeza

y los límites de mis cinco sentidos

no puedo siempre reconocer

y sentir tu presencia.

Necesito señales que me hagan sentir

tu presencia.

Y la señal más poderosa para mi

es el momento en que comulgo,

cuando recibo tu Cuerpo y Sangre en Comunión.

Pero no puedo recibir Comunión en este

momento por la Pandemia que estamos

sufriendo. Por eso te pido que me ayudes

a sentir más profundamente en este momento

de Comunión espiritual

– y, por favor en otros minutos --

tu presencia, tu amor, tu apoyo

en mis dificultades y tentaciones,

tu perdón de mis fallas.

Y ahora, como si ya te hubiera recibido,

me uno y me abrazo todo a ti.

No permitas, Señor, que jamás me separe de ti.

Anima Christi Alma de Cristo, santifícame.

Cuerpo de Cristo, sálvame.

Sangre de Cristo, embriágame.

Agua del costado de Cristo, lávame.

Pasión de Cristo, confórtame.

¡Oh, buen Jesús!, óyeme.

An Act of

Spiritual Communion My Jesus,

I believe that you are truly present

with me always,

for with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

you are God, present everywhere

at every moment.

But because of your greatness

and the limits of these five senses I have,

I need some signs of your presence

in order to sense it.

The most powerful sign of your presence for me

is the moment I receive you

your Body and Blood in Holy Communion.

I cannot receive you that way now because of this

pandemic, so I ask you to help me in this moment

of spiritual Communion

– and please in other moments as well –

to feel your presence, your love,

your forgiveness of my failings,

your support in my difficulties, and temptations.

I embrace you as if I had just received you

sacramentally

and unite myself wholly to you.

Never let me be separated from you.

Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, fill all my veins.

Water from the side of Christ, wash out my stains.

Passion of Christ, my comfort be.

Good Jesus, listen to me.

In Thy wounds, I fain would hide,

Never to be parted from Thy side.

Guard me, should the foe assail me.

Call me when my life shall fail me.

Bid me come to Thee above,

With Thy saints to sing they love

banquete de bodas para su hijo. Mandó a sus criados que

llamaran a los invitados, pero éstos no quisieron ir.

Envió de nuevo a otros criados que les dijeran: ‘Tengo pre-

parado el banquete; he hecho matar mis terneras y los

otros animales gordos; todo está listo. Vengan a la boda’.

Pero los invitados no hicieron caso. Uno se fue a su campo,

otro a su negocio y los demás se les echaron encima a los

criados, los insultaron y los mataron.

Entonces el rey se llenó de cólera y mandó sus tropas, que

dieron muerte a aquellos asesinos y prendieron fuego a la

ciudad.

Luego les dijo a sus criados: ‘La boda está preparada; pero

los que habían sido invitados no fueron dignos. Salgan,

pues, a los cruces de los caminos y conviden al banquete de

bodas a todos los que encuentren’. Los criados salieron a

los caminos y reunieron a todos los que encontraron, malos

y buenos, y la sala del banquete se llenó de convidados.

Brothers and sisters:

It is written that Abraham had two sons,

one by the slave woman and the other by the free-born woman.

The son of the slave woman was born naturally,

the son of the freeborn through a promise.

Now this is an allegory.

These women represent two covenants.

One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for

slavery; this is Hagar.

But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother.

For it is written:

Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children; break forth and shout, you who were not in labor; for more numerous are the children of the deserted one than of her who has a husband. Therefore, brothers and sisters,

we are children not of the slave woman

but of the freeborn woman.

For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm

PRIMERA LECTURA Lectura de la carta del apóstol san Pablo a los Gálatas (4, 22-24. 26-27. 31–5, 1)

Hermanos: Dice la Escritura que Abraham tuvo dos

hijos: uno de la mujer que era esclava y el otro de la

que era libre. El hijo de la esclava fue engendrado se-

gún las leyes naturales; el de la libre, en cambio, en

virtud de la promesa de Dios.

Esto tiene un sentido simbólico. En efecto, las dos mu-

jeres representan las dos alianzas: Agar representa la del monte Sinaí, que engendra esclavos y es figura de

la Jerusalén de aquí abajo. Por el contrario, la Jerusalén

de arriba es libre y ésa es nuestra madre. A este res-

pecto dice la Escritura: Regocíjate tú, la estéril, la que

no das a luz; rompe a cantar de júbilo, tú, la que no

has sentido los dolores del parto; porque la mujer

abandonada tendrá más hijos que aquella que tiene

marido.

Así pues, hermanos, no somos hijos de la esclava, sino

de la mujer libre. Cristo nos ha liberado para que sea-mos libres. Conserven, pues, la libertad y no se some-

tan de nuevo al yugo de la esclavitud.

se le dará más señal que la de Jonás. Pues así como

Jonás fue una señal para los habitantes de Nínive, lo

mismo será el Hijo del hombre para la gente de este

tiempo.

Cuando sean juzgados los hombres de este tiempo, la

reina del sur se levantará el día del juicio para conde-

narlos, porque ella vino desde los últimos rincones de

la tierra para escuchar la sabiduría de Salomón, y aquí

hay uno que es más que Salomón.

Cuando sea juzgada la gente de este tiempo, los hom-

bres de Nínive se levantarán el día del juicio para con-

denarla, porque ellos se convirtieron con la predica-

ción de Jonás, y aquí hay uno que es más que Jonás’’..

Hermanos: Cristo nos ha liberado para que sea-

mos libres. Conserven, pues, la libertad y no se

sometan de nuevo al yugo de la esclavitud.

Yo mismo, Pablo, les aseguro que, si se dejan

circuncidar, Cristo no les servirá de nada. Y

vuelvo a declarar que todo el que se deja cir-

cuncidar, queda obligado a cumplir toda la ley.

Ustedes, los que pretenden alcanzar la justifica-

ción por medio de la ley, han perdido a Cristo,

han rechazado la gracia.

Nosotros, en cambio, movidos por el Espíritu

Santo, esperamos ansiosamente la justificación

por medio de la fe. Porque para los cristianos

no vale nada estar o no estar circuncidado; lo

único que vale es la fe, que actúa a través de la

caridad.

manos antes de comer.

Pero el Señor le dijo: “Ustedes, los fariseos, lim-

pian el exterior del vaso y del plato; en cambio,

el interior de ustedes está lleno de robos y mal-

dad. ¡Insensatos! ¿Acaso el que hizo lo exterior

no hizo también lo interior? Den más bien limos-

na de lo que tienen y todo lo de ustedes queda-

rá limpio”.

MIÉRCOLES DE LA 28a SEMANA DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

PRIMERA LECTURA Lectura de la carta del apóstol san Pablo a los Gálatas (5, 18-25)

Hermanos: Si los guía el Espíritu, ya no están uste-

des bajo el dominio de la ley.

Son manifiestas las obras que proceden del desor-

den egoísta del hombre: la lujuria, la impureza, el

libertinaje, la idolatría, la brujería, las enemistades,

los pleitos, las rivalidades, la ira, las rencillas, las di-

visiones, las discordias, las envidias, las borracheras,

las orgías y otras cosas semejantes. Respecto a ellas

les advierto, como ya lo hice antes, que quienes

hacen estas cosas no conseguirán el Reino de Dios.

En cambio, los frutos del Espíritu Santo son: el

amor, la alegría, la paz, la generosidad, la benigni-

dad, la bondad, la fidelidad, la mansedumbre y el

dominio de sí mismo. Ninguna ley existe que vaya

en contra de estas cosas.

Y los que son de Jesucristo ya han crucificado su

egoísmo junto con sus pasiones y malos deseos. Si

tenemos la vida del Espíritu, actuemos conforme a

ese mismo Espíritu.

justicia y del amor de Dios! Esto debían practicar sin

descuidar aquello. ¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos, porque

les gusta ocupar los lugares de honor en las sinago-

gas y que les hagan reverencias en las plazas! ¡Ay de ustedes, porque son como esos sepulcros que no se

ven, sobre los cuales pasa la gente sin darse cuenta!”

Entonces tomó la palabra un doctor de la ley y le

dijo: “Maestro, al hablar así, nos insultas también a

nosotros”. Entonces Jesús le respondió: “¡Ay de uste-

des también, doctores de la ley, porque abruman a

Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

to the holy ones who are in Ephesus

and faithful in Christ Jesus:

grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has blessed us in Christ

with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,

Yo, Pablo, apóstol de Cristo Jesús por voluntad de Dios, les

deseo a ustedes, los hermanos y fieles cristianos que están

en Éfeso, la gracia y la paz, de parte de Dios, nuestro Pa-

dre, y del Señor Jesucristo.

Bendito sea Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo,

que nos ha bendecido en él

con toda clase de bienes espirituales y celestiales.

El nos eligió en Cristo, antes de crear el mundo,

para que fuéramos santos

e irreprochables a sus ojos, por el amor,

y determinó, porque así lo quiso,

que, por medio de Jesucristo, fuéramos sus hijos,

para que alabemos y glorifiquemos la gracia

entender que están de acuerdo con lo que sus padres hicie-

ron, pues ellos los mataron y ustedes les construyen el se-

pulcro.

Por eso dijo la sabiduría de Dios: Yo les mandaré profetas y

apóstoles, y los matarán y los perseguirán, para que así se

le pida cuentas a esta generación de la sangre de todos los

profetas que ha sido derramada desde la creación del mun-

do, desde la sangre de Abel hasta la de Zacarías, que fue

asesinado entre el atrio y el altar. Sí, se lo repito: a esta ge-

neración se le pedirán cuentas.

¡Ay de ustedes, doctores de la ley, porque han guardado la

llave de la puerta del saber! Ustedes no han entrado, y a los

que iban a entrar les han cerrado el paso’’.

Luego que Jesús salió de allí, los escribas y fariseos comen-

zaron a acosarlo terriblemente con muchas preguntas y a

ponerle trampas para ver si podían acusarlo con alguna de
