On the tenth anniversary of David’s tenure as our Senior Pastor, and as the Chair of the Pastor Search Committee, I am pleased to provide some reflections regarding his call and his subsequent service to First Baptist. It seems hard to believe that ten years have already passed, but in that time, David has made excellent progress in strengthening and enhancing our church while preparing it for a great future. We should give thanks for David, his family, and the great blessing they are to us. Fairly early in the search process, David was highly recommended by people “in the know” but I was uncertain about the reaction I might receive when I contacted him. After all, his church, First Baptist Knoxville, was a growing downtown church and he was much respected as the Senior Pastor and a community leader. However, the timing was good in that Andrew’s upcoming high school graduation and other factors made a change something he could at least consider. I asked for a video tape of a church service and he sent us a tape of the traditional service. In that tape, Jane delivered the best children’s sermon most of us had ever witnessed. I called him in a few days and when he asked my thoughts regarding the tape I told him that he had probably “over-married”! The committee members soon learned many other things about him including the fact that he could spot a new face in the crowd before a church service virtually every time. There wasn’t an easy way to visit a service on behalf of the committee and go undetected by David! After evaluating about 85 candidates over a wonderful journey of several months, and in regular prayer for God’s guidance and direction, the committee voted unanimously to recommend to FBC that David be called as Senior Pastor. To introduce David to the church, the committee published a flyer entitled “Expectations of New Beginnings” and it contained the following about him: “When we talked to many people, other preachers in different locations, former professors, peers in study from undergraduate through seminary, members of his former staffs, and lay persons, a few words characterized their assessments of David – impeccable character, solid theology, and a wonderful balance between preaching, pastoral care and administration...David is a visionary and consensus builder with the leadership skills to develop plans and implement them successfully.” I find the absolute consistency between the words in that flyer and his performance at First Baptist to be truly remarkable and I know for certain that we have been greatly blessed over the past ten years! MeetFBC!

“You are on the right track having this vision of a class to help new folks transition into the church. Thanks for your care, prayer,

and concern for us new folks.”

These were words shared by a participant in a recent Meet FBC! class. What a

wonderful and informative experience this has been not only for class members, but

also for our ministerial staff. MeetFBC meets Sunday mornings in room 112 at 9:15 AM. If you have been a part of the church for less than a year, would you consider being a part of our Meet

FBC! class? For more info, contact Pam McDaniel at [email protected]

P.E.T. Vehicle Assembly Postponed

The P.E.T. Vehicle Assembly scheduled for October 20 has been postponed. The

volunteers that make all the parts have not been able to get the parts ready in time. An announcement will be made when a new date is scheduled. Contact Mike Pearce if you are interested in getting involved in the production side of this project. He is in the beginning stages of learning more

about starting a self-sufficient P.E.T. Affiliate here in Huntsville. Dr. Jerry Graham wants

to thank everyone for their interest and willingness to work on this project.

Young Adult Pumpkin Patch

Young Adults (ages 20-mid 30s) are invited to the home of Susan Wessinger for our

annual Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday, October 23. Invite your friends and enjoy pumpkin carving, relaxing around the firepit, good

food, and lots of fun. Contact the 2345 Adult Ministry Office at 256-428-9418 for more

information.

Taking the Next StepWe have received 129 pledges totaling $637,314 for the completion of the Administrative Suite. At a called meeting of the Leadership

Council on Sunday night, October 7, the decision was made to authorize Woodward Construction to begin work in this area immediately. The Administrative Suite should be completed by the end of the year with offices being operational sometime in January. Staff who currently occupy the offices in the Main Office Suite, Business Office, and Childhood Ministries Office will be moving to the new Administrative Suite.

This move opens up much needed space for Sunday School rooms as well as Music Ministry offices. After several value engineering efforts, the reduced cost of the Administrative Suite is approximately $520,000 which includes both contractor costs and owner costs. This cost does not include rehabbing the vacated offices but know that the Leadership Council is determining how best to allocate funds for this purpose. The Leadership Council will bring a report to the Quarterly Business Meeting on November 14 with further details.

FIRST THOuGHTSDavid Hull, Pastor

I must echo the words of Psalm 16:9: “Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.” Those words describe how I feel. Let me put some of this rejoicing and gladness into words on paper so that you will understand.

As I come to my tenth anniversary as your Pastor, I continue to be glad in the joy of serving such a great church. This last decade has been a wonderful season in my life and ministry, and I am most grateful for the opportunities to know, love, and serve Christ together with such a choice group of people. I really am glad that Tom Houser made that phone call back in January, 2002. Jane and I are thankful for your love and support as we mark this anniversary and then continue our work together in service to our Lord. Truly, “my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.”

Another cause for joy is found in the article just above this one. Did you read that we have committed $637,314 to the completion of the Administrative Suite? That is fantastic news! We will now move ahead with this work and be able to use the new offices in January. We will be able to do this work without exceeding the $3.5 million long-term debt limit that we set for ourselves. Not only will this enhance the work environment for our staff, but it will greatly assist the entire Music Ministry as they will relocate their offices into a part of the current office suite and be able to move the music library and instrument storage into the current music offices. In addition, we gain several very accessible classrooms where offices are currently located. Thanks to all of you who made an extra commitment so that we could complete this project. Once again, “my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.”

Finally, did you pay attention to the budget giving numbers that were reported in the Messenger last week? We ended our fiscal year on September 30 with budget receipts of $4,113,792 toward our budget of $4.2 million. In these challenging economic times it is amazing to be able to receive 98% of our budget. The Stewardship update in this issue of the Messenger will give you all of the details. Let me just say “Thank you” for your generous stewardship in support of the mission and ministries of First Baptist Church. I need to say it one more time, “my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.”

What an amazing year! In a year when we have received almost $1,500,000 in extra Faith Steps giving, we have also received 98% of our ministry receipts goal – almost $100,000 more than was given last year. Hallelujah!

God has been so faithful to provide for our needs this year! We are grateful for His abundant love and generosity. Hopefully we have shared that love and generosity with our neighbors in need.

We are reminded of: the love, sweat and tears shared by our students in the Dominican Republic this summer, as well as those who went on a medical missions trip last November. Maybe you worked on the P.E.T. project to improve the quality of life for someone in Ghana. Perhaps you volunteered to tutor a Lakewood Elementary student or provided funds to purchase school supplies for children in our community. You may be a faithful volunteer who babysits for moms in our MOPS and ESL ministry. Maybe you are a committed supporter of our Stephen Ministry or our Grief Share program. In whatever way you serve our brothers and sisters in Christ we are strengthened and the cause of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is advanced. Continue to support the ministry of First Baptist Church through your talents, your financial resources, a portion of your time, your presence, and as always, your prayers.

We want, in all we do, to demonstrate the love of Jesus.

Know, Love, and Serve Christ Together

Did you know FBC Huntsville has a living legacy? It is administered by the FBC Foundation.

The Foundation began in the late 1990s with contributions from several generous donors. Only the interest earned from donations is used to support the four types of FBC Foundation activities. The largest activity is providing support for mission work. The FBC Foundation has spent more than $68,000 supporting mission trips for FBC groups and individuals serving both in the united States in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois and Alaska and abroad in Mali, Guatemala, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Saskatchewan, Malaysia, Honduras, Dominican Republic, West Africa, Gambia.

Other activities the Foundation supports include Capital Improvement and Facilities projects, Scholarships, and Transportation needs.

What types of gifts can build this living legacy through the FBC Foundation?• Cash or Property – On a weekly basis or as a one-time gift in memory or in honor of someone special.• Bequests - Securities, tangible personal property, real estate, trusts, annuities, etc.• Life Insurance – Naming the FBC Foundation as beneficiary in a new or existing policy.• Name Endowed Fund – Establishing a fund named for an individual or group. This offering requires a minimum gift of $25,000 which may be given over a five year time frame.

For 2013, the FBC Foundation will be adding an envelope to your giving envelopes to help facilitate giving to this legacy. Please note that gifts to The Foundation and the First Baptist Church Missions – noted by a current box on your weekly giving envelope are separate funds. Thus, please make your donations payable to the FBC Foundation and designate which of the four funds you wish to donate to. The description of each activity can be found on the FBC website at www.fbchsv.org.

The current FBC Foundation Board Members are Al Boyd, Wilton Causey, Joey Jessup, Becky Soutullo, and Marian Talley, They will be glad to answer questions that you might have.

Consider being a part of this FBC living legacy.

Come fellowship with other women as we eat and create together. There are six crafts to choose from and they will be on display at the sign-up table. Remember that you don’t have to be crafty to attend - we will

teach you everything you need to know.

FBC FoundationBuilding a Living Legacy enabling FBC members to

Senior Pastor David Hull Celebrates 10 Years at FBC!On the tenth anniversary of David’s tenure as our Senior Pastor, and as the Chair of the Pastor Search Committee, I am pleased to provide some reflections regarding his call and his subsequent service to First Baptist.
