The Levy Transition Training Program (L Tran) at Levy Special

Education Center is learning about the life cycle of Black Swallowtail

    butterflies.

Last Spring, we planted parsley in one of our flower beds outside of

our classroom. In August, the Black Swallowtail butterflies began

laying their eggs on the parsley.

We began collecting the caterpillars and placing them in a habitat.

Each day our class fed them more parsley and began reading books,

watching videos and creating art projects on these beautiful creatures.

We watched as the caterpillars shed their skin four different times and then shed their skin the final time

to reveal the Pupa (Chrysalis) stage of the butterfly. We waited and watched as the Chrysalis opened to

reveal a new butterfly. We have been feeding them additional parsley, sugar water and are performing a

scientific observation to determine what types of fruit the butterflies like. So far, we know they like or-

anges and do not like apples, strawberries or peaches.

So far, we have released 9 butterflies into the wild and we continue to gather additional caterpillars to

    watch.

    Good Things Happening in D-2….

The students of D2 are dedicated again this year to providing random acts of kindness to Levy students, staff, and our community. This year we are following the guidelines and lesson plans from the Random Act of Kindness Center. This curriculum teaches that being kind isn’t just about doing something nice for someone – it’s about being good to yourself, and understanding how empathy, compassion, respect, gratitude and integrity can improve every interaction you have in your life. Kindness is a skill, and like any skill it can be developed with practice and repetition. The RAK curriculum provides proven techniques that parents and teachers can use to help kids develop their kindness skills through understanding the value of kindness and how it can permanently boost their social and emotional competencies. In the last month our classroom has focused on feelings. We have learned how to identify feelings and how our actions affect others. We have done several activities discussing respect for each other and respect for their personal space. In the next month, we will learn about problem solving and how to deal with situations kindly when our feelings get hurt. Our first RAK project was making teddy bears. The students enjoyed making them. We then went on a field trip to Sandpiper Bay Nursing home and passed out the teddy bears to the residents. The students enjoyed giving them a bear, talking with the residents and making new friends. Many of the recipients had our students help them name their new bear. When we were done, we got to pet the therapy dog and watch the birds. This fieldtrip was a success for everyone! We hope to go monthly and provide random acts of kindness. We will also provide notes to staff members and students throughout the school year.
