UP, UP and awayDesigners bring creative talents to Chair Affair
CynTHIa REaSOn [email protected]
A veritable who’s who list of Toronto’s top designers have lent their cre-ative efforts to making next month’s Chair Affair gala the most successful signature fundraising event yet for Etobicoke’s Furniture Bank.
CBC’s Steven and Chris, Heidi Richter and Paul Lafrance of HGTV’s Decked Out, Alex Chapman, Kelly Cray and Neil Jonsohn of UNION31, and Jessica Helps and Jeff Schnitter of Seven Haus Design, are among the list of 22 designers who donated their talents and time to create “unique and extraordinary works of art” from ordinary, donated chairs from Furniture Bank’s Horner and Evans avenues area warehouse.
And what those designers have
come back with, said Furniture Bank’s executive director Susanna Kislenko, has been mindblowing.
“Every single chair we’re get-ting is of the highest quality – we’re blown away, just blown away,” she said, noting each of the chairs has been re-imagined and redesigned to reflect the individual designers’ interpretations of this year’s Chair Affair theme, Vibrant Toronto. “The designers really stepped up – the detail is there, the craftsmanship is there, and the design itself is there, too. We’re really, really happy.”
Now that the chairs are all completed, they’re ready to be auctioned off at this year’s Third Annual Chair Affair, sponsored by Streetcar Developments and hosted by Global Toronto’s Susan Hay at

Richview Collegiate grad Joey Votto, who honed his baseball skills at Connorvale Park with the Etobicoke Rangers, proved himself, once again, to be among the finest hitters in Major League Baseball during the just-completed regular season.
And he’ll hope to carry that momentum into the post season with his Cincinnati Reds taking on the San Francisco Giants in a best-of-five opening round National League playoff series. The first two games on Saturday and Sunday are in San Francisco, Monday is an off-day and then the action shifts to Cincinnati for the remainder of the series.
Cincinnati held the edge in the regular season 4-3.
“We’ll get out there, get a day of work in like we always do. We will focus on the things that got us here – playing good defense, relying on our starting pitching and bullpen, and really competing,” Votto, a first-baseman, said in an interview on the team website.
Votto closed out the season with a .337 batting average. His 475 plate appearances, however, fell just short of the 502 required to be in the run-ning for the official batting title. And that’s because Votto was only able to play 111 games in the 162-game schedule, missing 48 games due to a mid-season knee injury.
His average was better than both National League champion Buster Posey (.336) of the Giants and American League champ Miguel Cabrera (.330) of the Detroit Tigers.
Votto hopes to continue sizzling in post season

The top average actually went to Melky Cabrera (.346), also of the Giants, the all-star game MVP, whose season was shortened (501 plate appearances in 113 games) by a 50-game suspension for testing positive for testos-terone.
One category Votto did top, albeit an obscure one to the non-baseball fan, and one that Votto has said actually means more to him than batting average, is the ‘OPS’ category, which combines on-base plus slugging per-centage (for the record, Votto closed out at 1.041 compared
to next best Miguel Cabrera at .999).
In a category that isn’t so obscure his 44 doubles left him tied for seventh overall in MLB (and tied for second in the National League), and that’s despite playing at least 38 games fewer then those ahead of him.

Etobicoke’s Jessie Munro is still in the running to play Dorothy.
Julia Gartha, the 17-year-old from Unionville, was the third potential Dorothy to be eliminated during Monday night’s episode of Over the Rainbow.
The CBC Television weekly reality show is dedicated to casting the role of Dorothy for the Andrew Lloyd Webber/David Mirvish production of The Wizard of Oz set to premiere this December.
Now they’re down to seven.
Canadian comedic icon Andrea Martin played celeb-rity mentor to the girls and offered some comedic uplift to Sunday night’s episode.
Canadians voted Munro, 18, in the bottom two for the second consecutive week. Gartha also returned to the bottom two.
On Monday’s showdown, Munro and Gartha performed As Long as He Needs Me in the results’ show sing-off. Both seemed to sing too softly for the music.
second ‘save’
For the second consecutive week, judge Arlene Phillips “saved” Munro from elimina-tion. Last week, she called the Etobicoke School of the Arts’ musical theatre student an “extraordinary actress”.
“What you must remember about Dorothy is she is a girl who goes through many emo-tions during the two-and-a-half hour show. Your singing must show her journey from a girl to someone who is mature,” Phillips told the girls before their sing-off.
Once again, the eliminated Dorothy, this week Gartha, took the obligatory moon ride to the sky as she sang Over the Rainbow.

Auld Lang Syne. Rousing choruses of the
1788 Robbie Burns’ Scottish poem set to a traditional folk song not only rings in the New Year at midnight, it has also inspired seniors to song.
For years, Beryl Rasmussen and her pianist husband, David, led seniors in sing-a-longs at mostly Etobicoke seniors’ homes with Sun Tours’ song books. The books contained the words to count-less songs from the 1940s through the ’70s, including the classics, Auld Lang Syne, Clementine and I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.
Now the books are gone.Beryl Rasmussen estimates
last she checked, there was 25 to 35 of the songbooks in a box the couple always cart to their sing-a-longs. But the box is now empty.
“When SunTours was in existence, these are the books
people would use to sing on bus tours,” she explained. “A friend of ours gave us 50 to 60 books. But it dwindled. Someone picks one up, some-one else picks one up. Last I knew, we had 25 to 35 books. But when we went to open the box we keep them in, the books weren’t there.”
The missing books are a mystery to the former Etobicoke couple who now reside in Richmond Hill.
On Wednesday, David printed 25 copies of songs off the Internet just in time for the Albion Road-Islington Avenue area lodge’s annual Thanksgiving dinner and song session.
The Rasmussens are urging anyone with copies of the books, or informa-tion concerning the books’ whereabouts, to contact Our Saviour Lutheran Thistletown Lodge at 416-744-2144.
“We lost them within the last 18 months. We don’t know where they are.”

In the late 1940s a new road opened in Toronto called the Clifton Road
Extension and connected St. Clair Avenue East and Jarvis Street.
The road was thought nec-essary due to increasing car traffic from the suburbs north of St. Clair Avenue.
It took roughly 10 years from approval to final open-ing and there was controversy as it called for the demolition of homes in established com-munities. On May 17, 1950 it was opened, and called Mount Pleasant Road, considered Toronto’s first expressway.
What is important is not just the impact the new road had on the area north of St. Clair Avenue, but what hap-pened to Jarvis Street – once one of the city’s most beauti-ful streets, developed specifi-cally for the rich.
Many of the city’s most notable institutions and architecture was found there including Jarvis Collegiate Institute and Allan Gardens. In 1947 the stately trees that
lined the street were cut down, and it was widened for a new fifth lane to facilitate traffic from Mount Pleasant Road, which soon flowed in such high volume that many of the old homes and mansions were torn down to make way for commercial buildings and high-rise apartments.
Many of the older build-ings were turned into room-ing houses and then simply decayed.
By the 1970s the street was a text book example of how heavy traffic flow nega-tively impacts street life. The sidewalks were abandoned to drug addicts and prosti-tutes.
However, thanks to the intervention of urban plan-ners and theorists, such
as Jane Jacobs and David Crombie, downtown of Toronto came to be saved from the “empty doughnut-hole” fate of many American cities. Starting with decisions made in 2008, Jarvis was slated for re-development to make the streetscape people-friendly.
However, the current regime at city hall has decided to return Jarvis Street to its 1950s form by eliminating the new bike lanes and re-instating the fifth traffic lane at an estimated cost of up to $300,000. The rationale being that drivers are delayed get-ting from Mount Pleasant due to the bike lanes.
It seems that Mayor Rob Ford and his supporters would rather spend tax dollars to keep a 60-year-old plan-ning mistake in place than embrace new urban policies proven to build strong com-munities.

As families gather together for turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings to celebrate Thanksgiving this weekend, it’s a good time again to extend that
generosity to those less fortunate in our communities. The Salvation Army released a report this week
that revealed more families are turning to its food programs and centres for assistance. One-third of Salvation Army food banks also reported seeing a decrease in donations at their centres within the last year.
“As long as they require the services offered by The Salvation Army, we will be here to provide them, as we have for the last 130 years,” said Graham Moore, public relations secretary for The Salvation Army in Canada.
It’s important to answer the call for assistance from local organizations that work year round to support the families struggling to live above the poverty line.
At the same time, however, it’s also important to think of ways to work toward a more long-term sus-tainable solution for those same families where they become less dependent on local food banks.
Rather than continuously providing a hand-down to address their short-term needs, let’s provide a hand-up to give the help they need to support them-selves.
Like the Habitat for Humanity projects. A recent survey showed that once families received initial assistance to own their homes, they felt empowered to break the cycle of poverty.
Furthermore, no child who grew up in a Habitat home has ever needed one himself, said Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat for Humanity.
We recognize the solution is not simple, but rather complex and that it involves a host of factors such as addressing employment needs, government policies and providing other social supports.
But the solution will only come from the commu-nity putting our heads together and brainstorming ideas on how to start. We welcome your feedback and suggestions to get this dialogue going.
In the meantime, we should do what we can for those in need now. There’s no shortage of food drives taking place during the long weekend including the Fall Food Drive by North York Harvest Food Bank. The Daily Bread Food Bank is also hosting its annual Thanksgiving drive benefitting communities across the city.

To the editor:Re: ‘TCH report stands
chance of success,’ The City, Sept. 20
I do agree with columnist David Nickle’s observa-tions that the report titled “Putting People First” will in all likelihood be accepted by council.
However, I do not agree with his quite obvious dis-dain for our mayor and his attempts to turn the tide in Toronto.
Yes, Mayor Rob Ford continues to blunder along with a great number of either poor or misdirected attempts at controlling the middle and the left on city council.
One of his largest blun-ders, after Karen Stintz of course, was to appoint Councillor Ana Bailao to head up the housing task force. It was incredibly obvious to even an inexpe-rienced observer that the decision would come back to haunt him.
I do not fault our mayor for this, simply his advisors and the leftists on council who are constantly pushing him to compromise and gain a consensus.
Leaders do not gain a consensus, they lead.

Time and again the tax-payers are not asked, but told who, what, when, why and where. I am sick and tired of it.
Metrolinx was supposed to take charge of the TTC expansion, but now it is back in the hands of the TTC.
The whole system needs a major shake-up, and priva-tization should be front and centre.

Council had been reconsidering another bylaw, one introduced by former Mayor David Miller’s council, to force retailers to charge five cents for every plastic bag they hand out.
Mayor Rob Ford had vowed to reverse that bylaw—and he did—but council also supported the total ban of plastic bags, which would mean that on Jan. 1, every retailer would have to stop hand-ing out plastic bags and go back to paper.
Since that vote, Mayor Rob Ford and other councillors have tried to get the ban reopened — particularly after city legal staff suggested that such a ban would be difficult to enforce.
Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Peter Milczyn and Don Valley East Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong introduced a notice of motion at Wednesday’s council meeting to reconsider the ban — but under council’s rules, it would take two-thirds of council, or 30 votes, to re-open the issue and reconsider it.
vote: 27 to 19
In the end, they were three short, with just 27 votes to 19 to re-open.
Shiner said after the vote that he
would be introducing a motion to hold an abbreviated public con-sultation session prior to the final bylaw being introduced at council at its November meeting.
It was unclear, however, just what that consultation would accomplish.
Milczyn, who moved the re-opening, said that council hadn’t yet delivered the final word on the bylaw.
“It’s clear to me that a majority of council doesn’t want to enact a bag ban Jan. 1,” he said.
“That was pretty overwhelming. The solicitor’s advice was that if you want to do this, good idea or bad idea, you did it in exactly the wrong way. So having some round of consultation to try and safeguard us from lawsuits will be too little too late.”
bylaw is next step
Milczyn said ultimately, council will have to approve a bylaw – and when that comes up, it’s possible that it can be shot down.
“Every bylaw, every bill in the legislation has to be adopted by council. If there is no bill, there is no bylaw, and it would be a simple majority. We’ll see whether there’s going to be some consultation at public works.”

the Palais Royale on Nov. 1 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The top 10 chairs will be available for bidding by live auction, while the rest – along with more than 40 ‘chair experiences’ ranging from concert seats, to sittings with Toronto’s top hair stylists – will be auctioned off during the event’s silent auction.
Tickets to this year’s Chair Affair are available at http://chairaf-fair2012.eventbrite.ca for $150 each until Nov. 1; groups of eight or more can take advantage of the group rate of $125 a ticket. Tickets include two drinks, a chance to win a door prize (from Porter Airlines valued at $2,500, VIA Rail valued at $750, or Royal York Hotel valued at $700), a menu prepared by Chef Stefan Howard, and complimentary parking.
All proceeds from this year’s Chair Affair, said Kislenko, go towards Furniture Bank’s mandate of pro-viding free, gently used furniture and donated household items to immigrant and refugee newcomers to Canada, to women coming out of abusive situations, and to the formerly homeless trying to establish homes of their own.
Founded in 1998, Furniture Bank has helped furnish the homes of more than 40,000 such clients over the last 14 years.
Eleanor Adam, who is co-chairing this year’s Chair Affair alongside Moriah Bacus, said she knew within three minutes of stepping into Furniture Bank’s old warehouse in Parkdale three years ago that it
was an organization she wanted to volunteer with.
On that day, one of the client families Adam witnessed perus-ing the Furniture Bank warehouse included a quiet little boy with “big, dark eyes” looking longingly at a coveted desk. His parents – who were busy picking out the family’s new beds, kitchen table, couch and other basic furniture – didn’t notice their son staring at the desk, but the volunteer helping to guide the family through their choices did, recalled Adam.
“The volunteer picked up on it and she asked him ‘would you like that desk?’ He never said anything, he just nodded his head, but you
could tell from his face that he was just over the moon to think that he was going to get his own desk and he was so proud when they put his name on it,” she said. “That touched my heart, and I decided then and there that this was a great organiza-tion to work for.”
Last year alone, Furniture Bank helped outfit more than 5,000 people with proper furniture – 1,600 of whom were kids.
It’s because of that good work that Toronto design house UNION31 has lent its assistance to Furniture Bank for years – first by donating a truck-ful of furniture to the organization, then by getting involved with the Chair Affair.
Each year for the last three, design-ers from the firm have participated in the Chair Affair by both redesigning chairs for auction during the annual event, and by purchasing chairs by some of the other participating designers, said UNION31’s market-ing coordinator Laura Martins.
This year, she added, they’ve stepped up their efforts even more – with designers Chapman, Cray and Jonsohn designing not one, but two chairs between them, and also vol-unteering to help with Chair Affair’s marketing and promotion.
“We’ve seen that Chair Affair hasn’t gotten a lot of exposure and we know that this is an event that’s worth covering so we wanted to help,” Adam said. “Little charities like Furniture Bank often get forgot-ten, but we know how important the work they do is...it’s fantastic the work Furniture Bank does.”

Greater Toronto Area (GTA) real-tors reported 5,879 transactions through the TorontoMLS system in September 2012. The average selling price for these transac-tions was $503,662, representing an increase of more than 8.5 per cent compared to last year.
The number of transactions was down by 21 per cent in comparison to September 2011. However, it is important to note that there were two fewer work-ing days in September 2012 compared to September 2011. The majority of transactions are
entered on working days. On a per working day basis, sales were down by 12.5 per cent year-over-year.
“While sales have been lower due to stricter mortgage lending guidelines, we continue to see substantial competition between
buyers. The months of inven-tory trend remains low from a historic perspective, which ex-plains the strong price increases we are experiencing,” says To-ronto Real Estate Board President Ann Hannah.
September average selling
prices were up compared to last year for all major home types. Price growth was strongest in the City of Toronto, including condo-minium apartments with eight per cent year-over-year growth. All benchmark home types in-cluded in the MLS Home Price In-dex (MLS HPI) experienced year-over-year price increases, with substantially stronger increases for low-rise home types.
“Barring a major change to the consensus economic outlook, home price growth is expected to continue through 2013. Based on inventory levels, price growth will be strongest for low-rise home types, including single-detached and semi-detached houses and town homes,” says TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis, Jason Mercer.

On a quiet street nestled in the vi-brant Kingsway neighbourhood, two brand new single standinghomeshave recently emerged.
Two years ago Kerubico FineHome Building purchased a rundown, two-storey home set on anexpansive 50x100 lot at 3 MarquisAve.OwnerofKerubico, JakubKuz-iminski, saw potential in the landand planned to severe the currenthome to make room for two ultramodernenergyefficientdwellings.
AsasuccessfulbuilderintheGTAforthepast10years,Jakubplannedto enrich the neighbourhood withhis highquality homes. But, hewasmet with disdain from neighbourswho protested the development, delayingconstruction forayear.
“The home was in bad shapeand was ready to be torn down,”says Jakub. “But some neighboursdidn’t like the ideaof change.”
After much adversity, Jakubreceived approval from the Com-mitteeofAdjustments tobuild theproperties fromthegroundup.Heworked with his trusted contrac-tors to create sleek and modern2,700 square foot, two-storey inte-riors. Jakub and his wife Maria de-signed the bright open floor planswith clean, contemporary details,
metal railings and custom woodcabinetry throughout thehouses.
As an Energy Star builder andmemberofNetZeroEnergyHomeCoalition, Jakub went above andbeyondthebuildingcodetomakethe homes energy efficient. Thehomes were equipped with ener-gy efficient appliances and plentyof LED lighting that shine brightthroughout thehomes.
In keepingwith the neighbour-hood’s charming characteristics, the exterior is enriched with tradi-tional finishes tomatch thehomesthat lined the street.
What were once protested byneighbours are now two well-appreciatedhomes,praisedby thesamepeoplewhoopposed them.
“Theneighboursareimpressed,”says Jakub. “One of them told methey are happy to look out theirwindow to two beautiful homesinsteadof a rundownproperty.”
One of the homes is currentlyon the market while the other isreceiving final touches. To viewthe homes please contact Jakubat 416-877-0753. For more in-formation on Kerubico servicesvisitwww.Kerubico.com.

A conference held at York University in late September rightfully recognized the polit-ical importance of post-sec-ondary school students when it comes to regional transit planning, said a Toronto city councillor this week.
Adam Vaughan, who helped organize Going to School: A Transit Summit, which took place last Friday at York University, said the event succeeded in bringing attention to the importance of universities and colleges as central transit nodes crucial to the mobility of an estimated 650,000 post-secondary stu-dents in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
“We have a fresh focus now,” said Vaughan on Monday of the inaugural summit, which was held inside the Underground restaurant in the York Student Centre and co-organized by the univer-sity’s CITY Institute. “We’ve never looked at who we were serving, that’s been missing from the debate. Focusing on students gives us a political base.”
At the summit, York University student Michael Collens said students want to take transit to get to school, even though they are forced to rely on cars due to minimal service.
“We haven’t addressed how people are going to get places via transit because of a lack of connectivity,” said Collens,
who took part in a panel dis-cussion along with TTC chair Karen Stintz and GO Transit president Gary McNeil.
“We have connections in place but don’t synchronize them between transit authori-ties,” he said. “And we have to do it more with the population increases in the region.”
During his keynote speech Vaughan, who represents Trinity—Spadina on Toronto City Council, used presenta-tion slides to illustrate how the establishment of universities in the GTHA has historically fuelled urban growth, begin-ning pre-Second World War and continuing through the post-war boom years before stagnating for decades until the turn of the century.
But provincial and federal interest in universities of late and worsening regional traffic congestion mean the time to green-light transit expansion is now, said Vaughan to the planners, academics and com-mentators in attendance.
“The development of transit goes together with a boom in university building like a hand in glove,” said Vaughan.
Urban planner Sean Hertel told the estimated 150 par-ticipants continued regional development is dependent on better transit. Suburbs in particular have formed their own regional identity and are no longer defined by their proximity to larger city centres, he said.
“We live regional lives now,” said Hertel who spoke on a panel moderated by
new Toronto chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat. “We’re engaged in city build-ing whether we realize it or not.”
At the Keele campus, where a subway station for the upcoming Spadina extension is currently under construc-tion, 1,900 buses from five different transit agencies visit York daily, said Christopher Wong, the university’s director of transportation planning. He called for more transit, par-ticularly connections linking east and west.
“East and west connec-tions are vital and will set the stage for the next 25 years of growth for the university,” said Wong.
City councillor Shelley Carroll, who represents Don Valley East, told the audience she wanted to see fellow tran-sit campaigners alongside her at developer meetings and Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearings “fighting density”.
“Transit supporters need to be in the conversation because higher density sup-ports greater transit,” said Carroll on Monday.
“If you’re an activist, flip through every newspaper and know when people are discussing growth and devel-opment issues.
“The safest thing to do politically is push off a transit project and not do anything at all,” Carroll said.

Metrolinx and the TTC will work together after all to run four light rail transit lines in Toronto.
Accompanied by Ontario Minister of Transportation Bob Chiarelli, representatives from both transit agencies held a joint press confer-ence at TTC headquarters Wednesday, announcing an agreement in principle has been reached for the opera-tion of the LRT lines, the first of which is scheduled to open in 2020.
Under the terms of the agreement, the TTC will be responsible for operating the transit lines – Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, F i n c h , S h e p p a r d a n d Scarborough – leaving all design, construction and maintenance work to the private sector.
Metrolinx also agreed to let the TTC co-ordinate opera-tion of the lines through its Hillcrest control facility, a crucial factor in the agree-ment, said TTC CEO Andy
Byford.“It was very important to
make sure we got the opera-tions, safety and customer service elements right and Bruce (McCuaig, Metrolinx CEO) and I have worked very hard on a framework that can deliver that aspiration,” said Byford at the press confer-ence.
The agreement comes exactly two weeks to the day Metrolinx informed the TTC in writing that the province would look for a private sector partner to run the lines.
But McCuaig said the letter from Sept. 19 addressed to the TTC simply represented “one moment in time” and negotiations continued to find a suitable compro-mise.
He denied the decision to send the letter was a negoti-ating tactic intended to put pressure on the TTC to come to terms on an agreement.
“This was not about put-ting pressure on anyone,” said McCuaig. “It was about two partners working together to deliver a new approach on
this infrastructure, and that’s exactly what we did.”
While the question of what transit entity will operate the lines has been resolved, details remain to be final-ized, and McCuaig said he expected a master agreement to be hammered out in the next couple of months.
Another issue is how much funding the province will give to the TTC to run the lines.
TTC chair Karen Stintz said a decision on that matter isn’t due until two years before the lines open.
“We have time to work out those details,” she said.
Chiarelli called on the fed-eral government to imple-ment a national strategy for planning and funding transit projects over the long term.
He said his government to date had kicked in nearly $13-billion in infrastructure funding for Ontario, while the federal commitment for the entire country was half that.
“They need to come to the table with more,” said Chiarelli.
