    Student Leaders Volunteer at the Food Bank

    On Monday, October 15th

    eleven of this years Student Leaders and a communit

    partner attended the Food Bank of Delaware to tour the facilities and help pack

    boxes of food for senior citizens. Students were able to ask questions and see f

    hand how they are going to be able to better run the McKean Food Closet.

    Financial LiteracyOn Tuesday, October 16th, McKean students met with students from William Penn HS a

    Newark HS at the Junior Achievement building in Wilmington and were taught valuable

    financial lessons by ING/Capitol One volunteers.

    Spotlight On Service Learning Part of opening the Food Closet at McKean, CIS is partnering with the FoodBank to bring the Backpack Program to McKean. If you and your family is

    interested or would like more information, please contact Trish Ragan.

    Mentoring Works Student Leaders continue to meet every Wednesday with the freshmen du

    Advisory. This month focused on getting involved in the school community

    and extracurricular activities as McKean celebrated Homecoming on the

    weekend of the 19th. Students also learned about the importance of grade

    attendance, and attending AWR as they complete their 1 st marking period

    high school.

    Upperclassmen continued to meet in their club/activity every Wednesday.Sophomores and Juniors were provided information on what the PSATs are

    and why they are important before taking them on the 17th. In addition to

    regular club activities, students were invited to attend the monthly Diversi

    Celebration with Mrs. Hobbs which celebrated National Hispanic Month, a

    well as, choose a representative from each group to sit on the SGA council

    once a month and attended interest meetings for upcoming winter sports.

    The Absence Work Recovery (AWR) Program began this month. Students wexcessive absences and/or unexcused absences can stay after-school on

    Wednesdays in the library to make up work and recover days. Peer Tutors

    available to assist students with any work they might have.

    Career & College Prep While upperclassmen took their PSATs on the 17th, freshmen met in their

    Advisory classes and began completing their annual revision of their Stude

    Success Plans (SSPs). Parents, be on the lookout for a copy of your childs

    updated SSP to review, sign and return to school with your student (it is a

    requirement for each students 100% completion).

    On Track 1 & 3 started on October 26 with 40 students fromWilliam Penn & McKean. Juniors began On Track 1 which focuses on life sk

    post-secondary exploration, leadership development and decision making

    skills. Meanwhile, seniors began On Track 3 which is a course that gives

    students the opportunity to learn about financial aid counseling, SEED andscholarship information, and the importance of a college education. All

    students participated in group activities, building critical thinking skills and

    practicing college level coursework. The students final course will culminat

    on December 7, 2012 with a celebration congratulating their dedication. A

    students will earn a college credit upon completion.

    Student Spotlight

    Imani Jones, JuniorImani Jones has been involved with CIS since he came to

    McKean last year from Red Lion as a sophomore. At first, th

    transition from a private to a public high school proved to be

    challenge, but like many other obstacles Imani has faced, he

    overcame and achieved. At our CIS 2011-2012 closing

    celebration, Imani and his father gave the keynote speech an

    as a 15 year old, he really proved himself to be a person of m

    wiser means beyond his years. Imani has completed several

    programs with CIS over the past 2 years. He has been involv

    with Junior Achievement curriculum and field trips, The Choi

    Roadpresentation on anti-violence, On Track and many otheday to day check-ins. We asked Imani to tell us what he thought of CIS and this is what

    said. I love CIS, because they love me. Ms. Trish and Ms. Katie are always ready to he

    no matter what the problem is. CIS has really opened my eyes to the fact that I can rea

    go to college. Im involved in the On Track program because of them and this is why I l

    CIS!

    Community Partner SpotlighCIS at McKean sponsored several fundraising campaigns this month with different

    community organizations.

    Shoes2Share.org in competition with the CIS students at Dickinson HS, McKean staff

    students are donating their used shoes to the Shoes2Share Program which provides sh

    for those in need all over the world.

    Pennies for PolioThe Red Clay School District is partnering with the local rotary to ra

    funds to eradicate Polio from the world. Advisory teams partnered up for a Penny Wa

    competition and raise over $300.00.

    Wellness Center Registration ContestCIS partnered with the Wellness Center to see

    how many incoming students turned in completed forms. Over 75 new students did a

    received a Free Homework pass in one of their core classes for one assignment.

    Grottos Night CIS hosted a night at the Grottos on Pennsylvania Ave. on Wednesday

    October 24th. 20% of diners bill went to CIS.

    Cancer FederationCIS partnered with the Cancer Federation to have a drop-off truck

    located in the upper parking lot on Saturday, October 27th. Thank you for those who m

    donations!

    Chamber of Commerce officially kicked of

    Delaware Principalfor a Dayprogram with

    press conference at McKean High School.

    Guests heard remarks from Lisa Ueltzhoff

    McKean school principal; Bill Allan, Delaw

    State Chamber of Commerce Chairman; D

    Blowman, Department of Education; and

    own, Enid Wallace-Simms from Delmarva

    Power, longtime supporter and board

    member of CIS.

    CIS has also partnered with the school to provide as many families and community

    members and partners with information as possible. Newsletter articles can be found

    the schools newsletter, as well as their website. Articles were also submitted to The N

    Journal for the Crossroads section. Morning announcements, radio segments, informa

    boards, and Facebook have all been utilized to publicize events.
