“On The Road Again”

REP’S CORNER:

It’s been a whirlwind of activity over the past 3 months. Our 2019

Western PA rally has come and gone. A special thank you to all those who

helped make it another successful year. Next year’s rally will be held July

20th – 22nd at the same location, with early registration on the 19th. I already

have a volunteer from Eastern PA to lead a ride or two! More about our 2019

rally inside.

The week after our rally, it was off to the 50th International Retread

Rally in Spearfish, SD. Larry & I, along with Ken & Joan Tejchman, Darryl

& Nancy Boleratz, and Denny & Jan Archer, all headed west. We had several

memorable events while on that trip. South of Spearfish, near Jewel Nation-

al Monument, the fuel pump on my ’94 Wing decided it was done pumping

fuel. Thank goodness for AAA & Rice’s Rapid Motorsport in Rapid City, SD.

AAA dropped the bike off, after hours, on a Tuesday evening. By 11:30am

Wednesday, Rice’s had a new fuel pump assembly in the bike and we were

ready to ride again. Then two days later, on our way back to PA, just west of

Bismark, ND, a deer decided she wanted to go for a ride in the sidecar. For-

tunately, although there was damage, the bike was still drivable and we were

able to continue our trip home on Saturday morning. The bike is scheduled to

go for in for repairs on Oct. 21st.

We had a beautiful day for our Western PA picnic this year, 76° and

sunshine! More about that inside.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to attend the New England Rally this

year. I have read that we missed a great time and beautiful weather. Larry &

I did manage to take two long weekend trips to WV in September. We

bought a 2012 Can-Am Spyder RT-S on our first trip down so we had to plan

a second trip to go back and get it. It sure was different riding as a passenger

again on two wheels. We just took Larry’s bike down so I could ride the

Spyder home. 300 miles to pick it up. 700 miles home!

Our next event is the Winter Banquet being held on December 14th.

Details can be found on the registration form. Our special collection this year

is for hats, gloves and scarves to be donated to area homeless shelters.

It’s time to think about renewing your membership for 2020. The

membership renewal contest is on once again. Everyone who has

renewed or joined, by Thanksgiving, will be entered into a contest and ONE

lucky member will receive their dues back when their name is drawn at the

Winter Banquet. Also PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIGN YOUR FORM. If it

is a couple’s membership BOTH must sign.

Dues Increase

The Retreads International Board

of Directors has raised the dues to

$20/single and $25/couple effec-

tive Jan 1, 2020. The increase will

remain in our chapter to be used

for chapter expenses and the good

of the membership. The amount

sent to the International for mem-

bership cards remains the same at

$2 per card. If you pay your dues

before January 1st, you may pay at

the old rate.

News From Our Retread International Board of Director - Art Grantz

At the 2018 Board meeting President Lloyd Smith announced that he would step down at the next Interna-

tional Rally. He told the board members to deliberate on choosing a new leader. At the 2019 Board meeting,

held at the International Rally, the Board of directors Selected East Central Regional Director Jim Mosley to

be our new President.

Lloyd Smith has been our President for eight years and his wife Barbara has been our Secretary. Lloyd has

instituted many changes for the good of the organization and it's members. Under his leadership we now have

a Board of Directors that actively participate in club events and genuinely cares about the members. Each

year at the International Rally prize money is donated by the Board of Directors to be given to some of the

members attending the rally. This year 20 members each received $100. The Retreads make donations to sev-

eral charities including St Jude's Children's Hospital and Wounded Warriors. The Canadian Director is au-

thorized to make donations to worthy Canadian Charities.

Our new President, Jim Mosley, and his wife Kay, who is now our Secretary, have worked tirelessly over the

years for our organization. Besides being Regional Directors they are instrumental in organizing our Interna-

tional Rally each year.

We congratulate Jim and Kay on their new positions and thank Lloyd and Barbara for all they have done.

Lloyd will continue to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

2019 Western PA Rally

The rally will be held July 20 - 22, 2020

at the Quality Inn & Suites Conference

Center located at 8040 Perry Highway,

Erie, PA 16509. The rooms have two

queen beds or one king bed. There are

plenty of 1st floor rooms. The rate is

$65.00/night plus tax for 1 –4 peo-

ple. Breakfast is included. The hotel

phone number is 814-864-4911. Mention

Retreads to get that rate. We will have

early registration Sunday afternoon, as

we’ve had for the past several years. We

are still working on finalizing the evening

events. A rally flyer will be available lat-

er this year, with all the details. The hotel

is next to I-90 on Route 97 (Perry High-

way) near the Casino and horse track.

Western Pennsylvania Retread Rally 2019

Sunshine welcomed the Retreads rolling into the Western PA Retread Rally on Sunday, July 14th.

With close to 100 attending, we were happy to get all but a few registered and settled by Sunday evening.

Many out-of-towners, happily checked out the casino across the street from rally headquarters, at the Quality

Inn. This is the second year the Quality has been the host site for our rally and they provided “quality” accom-

modations including guest rooms, buffet breakfast, a hospitality room and banquet room.

We were happy to greet old friends and many new retreads this year. Twelve Canadians crossed the bor-

der including Canadian Director, Frank Psenak & his wife Connie, Ron & Marg Shortreed- past Ontario Reps,

and Canadian Director and Ontario south Rep’s Lynda Johnston & Nancie Callon. The Delmarva chapter

(Delaware (8) and Maryland (6)) totaled 14 Retreads attending included Ken & Margie Clendaniel, Rep’s; Ron

& Cheryl Doucette, Asst Reps; and past MD Rep’s, Hal & Dottie Routzahn. The Hudson Highlands New

York retreads group had 17 members, including current Rep’s Howard & Deborah Trask, past Rep’s Ray &

Elma Taylor, and Coordinator Ruth Reynolds. New England was represented by 2 folks from Massachusetts.

3 traveled from Ohio including Rep Charlie Clark and we even had 3 members who followed the sunshine and

came from Florida! Pennsylvanian’s filled out the group with 37 attending including a large group from East-

ern Pa. Art Grantz, our Mid Atlantic Director and Board of Director’s Rep came, along with Eastern Pa Assis-

tant Rep’s Ed & Kathy Benner, and Past Eastern PA Reps Paul & Mary Lou Weaver. Our own Western Pa

group included Past Rep’s John & Virginia Docter, and Ray & Darlene Phillips, Current Rep Kim Docter, and

Assistant Rep’s Dick White and Darryl & Nancy Boleratz.

These folks do not care about titles, they are our get-it-doners who make sure rallies, parties, picnics

and rides happen. While they are the face of our clubs, they are supported by many other willing helpers. If we

want to continue to have awesome Retread get-togethers, which we sometimes take for granted, we need make

sure to BE a volunteer - come, participate and lend a hand!

This year’s rally had 9 different planned rides, 3 going

out each day. Monday, 24 people drove the 185 mile round trip

to tour the Car Mate Trailer Factory, 20 visited the US Coast

Guard Station on Lake Erie, and 25 Retreads traveled on Lake

Erie Scenic Ride along Lake Erie, stopping at the Barcelona

Harbor Light House and enjoyed the view of Lake Erie from

the overlook at Luensman Overlook Park in Portland NY.

Monday evening almost all of the attendees gathered at the

Erie Public Dock to board the stately Victorian Princess Paddle boat.

The Capitan’s knowledge of the history of the city and lake were the

perfect accompaniment for the scenic tour around the bay, and out into

the unusually calm Lake Erie waters. The crew not only manned the

boat, but served an excellent dinner! Many stayed on the pier after we

got back for the spectacular Lake Erie sunset panorama.

Tuesday’s rides had 20 Retreads off

early on a 220 mile roundtrip to the

Eldred, PA WWII Museum, while

another group of 20 stayed in Erie for

an interesting tour of the USPS Processing and Distribution Plant and an-

other group headed to Warren Ohio for a visit to the National Packard Muse-

um. Tuesday evening was un-wind night, where we gathered for salad, pizza,

wings and ice cream, and got to know each other with conversation and

games.

Wednesday threatened and produced

thunderstorms, so the rides were

changed from 2 wheels to four. A lit-

tle rain does not stop Retreads! 30

people had an interesting tour of

Acutec Precision Aerospace Plant in

Meadville. Another 20, visited Camp-

bell’s Pottery Store, had lunch at the

Historic Eagle Hotel and then toured

the Fort LeBoeuf Museum and Campus. The third group of 30, got a behind

the scenes and backstage tour of the Erie PA. Historic Warner Theatre, com-

missioned by Warner Bros movie giants in 1929.

The Wednesday evening banquet buf-

fet did not disappoint. It was awesome and well stocked with stuffed

chicken breasts, prime rib, stuffed shells and all the usual sides.

There was more than enough and anyone could go up for seconds if

they wanted more.

The highlight of every rally is the presentation of our special awards.

We celebrate how far we ride and how young/old we are!!!! So I will

begin with our oldest Retread in attendance (any mode of travel):

Dick (Pappy) Dombach, who is 92 and rode 312 miles to the rally on

his Spyder from Lancaster, PA. The youngest Retread attending did

not sign up for an award, but we unearthed his name: Mike Butts

from Nineveh, NY who is 49. Howard Trask rode into Erie from

Oneonta NY on his 1996 Harley Davidson Ultra-glide, winning the

award for the oldest motorcycle at the rally. Howard’s wife, Deb

walked away with the award for the long distance female solo driver,

traveling 330 miles from Oneonta, NY. The oldest retread on 2 or 3 wheels driving to the rally award was

won by Fred Miller 91, from West Oneonta, NY who rode 330 miles on his Can-Am Spyder. Randy & Janice

Dill came all the way from Delaware, traveling 450 miles to win the Long Distance two up award. Paul &

Mary Lou weaver joined us after driving 380 miles on four wheels from New Holland, PA to enjoy our rally.

Bernhard Rasmussen drove 347 miles from Shoharie, NY, winning the Long Distance Solo Driver. Way to

go Retreads!!!!!

The other most exciting part of the Rally banquet is all about prizes. Chinese Auction goodies included a

wide variety of enticing choices. We had a one of John Docter’s famous bird feeders, a heated riding vest, a

Cooper tire jacket, gift baskets, a computer lap desk, stainless steel travel mug and even a fishing pole, tire

gauge, hair clippers and decorative items. It was quite an array. Then we had our door prize table that was

loaded with gift cards, including 20 - $10 cards from Walmart, cash envelopes with $20, $20 and $25, can-

dles, work gloves, household items, and even “My Pillows”! There were too many prizes to list all with win-

ners BUT we did have one Retread who had a really big night. Dottie Routzahn, from Booneboro Maryland

went home with a total of 5 prizes from both the Chinese Auction and the prize table and then won the 50/50

prize of $208. Yea Dottie!!!!!

If you did not come this year, it is not too late to experience the one and only Western Pa Retread Rally.

We will be back again next July. Save the dates- July 20, 21 and 22 at the Erie Pa Quality Inn just off of

I90. Easy to find, and we will be waiting with open arms to welcome you. Remember what our own special

Retread, John Docter always says “I never met a Retread I didn’t like.” We love you too, John.

IT WAS A PICNIC (RETREAD STYLE)

Our end of the summer picnic was wonderful. Kim Docter is our event planner and she out-does herself every

year. Kim even planned the weather, sunny with a high of 76!!! Thanks Kim!!

The Conneaut lake park picnic area was used again this year and turns out to

be the best spot we have ever used. It is a drivable distance for us all, and the

pavilion Kim reserved was even close to the restrooms. Does not get any bet-

ter than that! The caterer did a great job on meatball subs, boneless chicken,

potato salad, baked beans and fruit salad. Plentiful and delicious! Desserts

were made by our own ladies so we had many delicious options to choose

from, pies, cookies and even old fashioned Gobs!

Between visiting, telling ride and

travel stories checking out bikes, pur-

suing the Chinese auction prize table

and eating; boy, was it a busy day!!!

Ready for prizes? Kim did have a

game only 1 game, so there were lots

of winners. The brain teaser was to

remember candy brand names based

on clues! There were 23 different kinds of candy on the list, so we had

to think, think, think! Joan Tejchman got them all correct!! Prizes

were a choice out of a random prize basket or one of the candy bars on

the game list. Cool! So after Joan, the candy experts, in number of

correct in descending order, included Denny Archer, Judy Grossman,

Dave Wilcox, Lynnette Teed, John Docter, Betty Jones, Duane

Jones, Judy Kotz, Carol Feazell, Judy Neill, Joyce Snodgrass, Joe Furka and Larry Powell. We Retreads

know our candy!

Finally there was the Chinese auction. It is amazing how many different items our group donates for this

event. The most popular items included one of Joan Tejchman’s homemade apple pies which was won by

Darryl Boleratz. Other sought after items were fresh eggs from Joan Tejchman’s chickens, trays of vegetables

from Jan Archers’s garden, homemade leather items made by Duane

Jones, and lovely crocheted pieces created by Betty Jones, and of

course a jar of peanuts! We had some winning couples, with both Larry

& Joyce Snodgrass and Martin & Judy Kotz going home with a total of

five prizes for each couple, as well as Duane & Betty Jones who won

two retread shirts and three other prizes. Judy Neill and Joe Furka

each one three prizes. The prizes (more than 35) were going fast so I

hope I got the counts correct.

The last random give a-way was for the leftover food! Since there was

so much, Kim separated it into zip lock bags and many folks went

home with meatballs, sauce, sub rolls, potato salad, beans and fruit sal-

ad.

If you did not make it, we missed you, every day is precious, and every Retread is special. So if you have not

come lately, please come back to a monthly breakfast and our next event coming up soon- our annual Winter

Banquet. Watch the newsletter for the details, but here is a clue, it is usually held the first Saturday of De-

cember, so save the date. Hope to see you there! (Winter Banquet is the 2nd Saturday of December this year)

2019 Retreads International Rally

We departed on our trip Friday morning at 8:00 am with the truck pulling the enclosed trailer with the Gold-

wing inside. We headed west on route 6N to I-90 and through Ohio and into Indiana and then went onto I-80.

Traffic Friday afternoon near Gary, Indiana was terrible. It took about 45 minutes to go about 10 miles. Fol-

lowing I-80 across Indiana, Illinois and into Iowa, we stopped for the night at Davenport, Iowa after traveling

600 miles. On Saturday morning, we were on the road again traveling across Iowa to the west side and then

went north on I-29 and into South Dakota and onto I-90 west. So far, the weather had been good. There were

some areas of road construction. We stopped for the night in Kennebec, South Dakota after another 600 mile

day.

Sunday morning was rainy for the first hour and then we got back to dry roads. It was quite windy and com-

ing from the west which made driving a bit challenging and quite bad for gas mileage. We stopped at Kadoka

to visit the Petrified Gardens. It was interesting with quite a few displays of petrified trees and other items.

We continued west and stopped again at Wall to visit the Wall Drug Store. It is quite a tourist attraction with

lots of places to buy stuff. Continuing west, we arrived at Spearfish and got checked into the Holiday Inn

where the rally is hosted. Registration opened at 4:00 pm and after signing in, we visited with several Re-

treads and signed up for rides.

Monday morning at 9:00 am, we departed

with ride leader Claude Burton for Devils

Tower. There were 24 people in the group.

Our first stop was at Aladdin, Wyoming

at the general store. It is a very old store

and they had an outhouse out back for

anyone who had to go. After a short

break, we continued to Devils Tower

Trading Post. We ate lunch at the Campstool Café and then headed back to the hotel

for a short break. Frank and Connie Psenak from Ontario rode with us on Route 14A

through Spearfish Canyon. What a beautiful ride through the

canyon and we stopped at Bridal Veil Falls for a few photos, then continued to Sturgis

where we found a Dairy Queen and stopped for some ice cream. We rode through Sturgis

and saw where all the vendors were getting set up for the Sturgis motorcycle event.

When we arrived back at the hotel, we had ridden 205 miles. What a beautiful day!

Monday evening, we played cards in the hospitality room, a game called “golf”.

Tuesday was another beautiful morn-

ing and we went riding with Ed &

Kathy Benner and Frank & Connie

Psenak. Ed took us to Custer State

Park where we saw several buffalo up

close to the road. We also rode on Iron

Mountain Road and Needles Highway.

We saw Mount Rushmore and Crazy

Horse. There are lots of curves and hills on Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway. We

returned on Routes 85 and 14A and came back through Spearfish Canyon. We rode 247

miles for the day. In the evening, there was a 50/50 drawing and bingo.

It rained Tuesday night, but Wednesday morning was beautiful. Since we have never been in Montana or

North Dakota, we wanted to take a ride in four states. Craig & Charlotte and Frank & Connie wanted to ride

I had spent time mapping out a ride and we departed at 9:00

am. Our first stop was in Bell Fourche,

which is the geographical center of the United States. We

spent time looking through the museum and a log cabin. We

headed west on Route 212 into Wyoming and then north on

Route 323 into Montana. When we got to our planned turn

onto Tie Creek Road, it was a dirt road. We continued north

on Route 323. We traveled for many miles without even see-

ing another road. When I noticed a surveyor truck along the

road, we stopped and asked how far we had to go to get gas

and food. It was only 9 ½ more miles to Ekalaka, Montana where we

stopped at the Café for lunch and then got gas at a little station near

the café. We headed northeast on Route 7 to Route 12 east

toward North Dakota. When we reached Route 85, we headed south

toward South Dakota and back to Spearfish. We rode through a light

rain for about ten minutes and then back into sunshine. We saw a few

herds of buffalo along Route 85. We arrived at the hotel at 5:30 and

had ridden 350 miles for the day. It certainly was an adventure.

We got back in time for the BBQ evening and entertainment by singer,

Bill Atkins. Bill was a good singer and did a lot of country & western music. There was another 50/50 draw-

ing and the Chinese auction prizes were done.

Thursday morning was rainy. We went in the truck and Frank & Connie went with us to Sturgis to visit

the Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. The museum was great and even had a display from the Re-

treads. There were lots of interesting and old bikes in the museum. We headed back to Spearfish to visit

the High Plains Western Heritage Center. There was a lot to see and read about the history of the area in

this museum. They also had a film to watch. After our visit, we went to lunch at Perkins. We returned to

the hotel to relax for a few hours before the evening activities. It was still raining.

The banquet was very good with lots of food. Kay Mosley made a few announcements.

Lloyd Smith had retired as President of the Board of Directors and Jim Mosley was

elected. Several awards were given

and the Board of directors also gave

$2,000.00 for prize money; $100.00

each to 20 people whose ticket num-

bers were drawn. There were Re-

treads in attendance from Ontario

and 29 states with the best represen-

tation from Pennsylvania with 24.

There were 179 total in attendance.

It was another great rally.
