It’s hard to believe that fall is already here. I hope you all have enjoyed a wonder-ful summer and were able to participate in one of our events, be it the Summer Cruise, Hikes and Walks, the Blue Jays game, Woodbine races, or our Esso Golf League. I would like to extend thanks to the members of the Executive who volun-teer their time to organize these events. Thank you also to Imperial Oil for its gen-erous subsidy which keeps these events at an affordable price.

The details of our upcoming events are noted elsewhere in this newsletter. Our membership is currently over 550 and events fill up quickly so please register early and check the website regularly. Join us for bridge, the All Clubs Luncheon, our Christmas Dinner, the Christmas Concert, or lunch at the Donalda Club in the up-coming months.

I hope you are enjoying retirement (how did we ever have time to work!) and staying in contact with your work col-leagues though our club.

Our speaker will be Mike Filey, Toronto Historian. Mike has dedicated decades to research and fact finding in recording the fascinating history of the city of Toronto which he has a great passion for. He was born and raised in Toronto, has written nearly two dozen books about Toronto’s past and for more that 25 years has writ-ten :The Way We Were”, a very popular column in the Sunday Sun newspaper. He can also be heard weekdays at 9:30 am on AM740 Radio, where he share sto-ries on Mike Filey’s Toronto.

There will be a choice of roast rib of beef, salmon or vegetarian lasagne and a cash bar.

The Glory of Gospel

The JUNO award-winning Toronto Mass Choir has brought its distinct and glorious gospel sound to

festivals and venues throughout Canada. The 30-voice choir’s program will include a variety of gos-

pel classics plus upbeat songs of the holiday season and a rousing arrangement of Handel’s

"Hallelujah Chorus." Guest performer is bassist Shelly Berger.

2013 Golf Season

The very popular Esso Golf league has played most Tuesdays since April to the enjoyment of all members. On Sept 10th, 40 golfers participated in the annual golf tournament at Cardinal Redcrest and had a great time. They played by teams in a shamble format and prizes were awarded to the 3 teams with the lowest scores.

2013 Hikes & Walks Season

The EACTN hikes and walks 2013 season is almost over, with 12 events sched-uled starting early May and ending early October. We are expecting to end the year at well over 130 person-events, which is a significant increase over the previous season.

The organizers have scheduled these events every other week, alternating short urban walks on Thursdays with longer, more challenging hikes outside

the city on Wednesdays, in the hope of accommodating and drawing as many potential participants as possible.

As in previous years, these events have given us the opportunity to explore areas in and around the city that would other-wise remain unknown to the majority of us. We also tried a few new restaurants.

By far the most popular (and oversubscribed) event was the walking tour of Old Toronto guided by our own Jim Arnott and including a lunch stop in the Distillery area. Jim conducted last year a tour of the Yorkville area that delighted the partici-

pants. This year’s encore did even more so. Jim did a fabulous job researching the history of the landmarks along the way and sharing his knowledge.

With our fourth hikes and walks season coming to a close, we will incorporate this year’s learnings for the next season and – with new exploratory areas to be proposed - hope to see more of you on the trails next year.
