Reading Workshop- Unit 1This week learners were introduced to partner reading. They practiced introducing their books to each other and then took turns reading and discussing what they read. We reviewed reading “snap words” that helps to read in “bigger scoops” and reading with good fluency.Readers also practiced identifying “Hooks” in books, as Master writers will do to inspire hooks for their own writing.

Writing Workshop- Unit 1Narrative writingWe have been focussing on “hooks” that use dialogue, facts, or the setting to start their small moment narratives.Learners were also introduced to “show not tell” writing. This is another way in which Master Writers make their writing more interesting. For example-Instead of: “I was surprised!” they could write: “I started jumping up and down and waving my arms!” This kind of writing allows the reader to visualize what is happening more clearly. Next week we will try add more of this type of writing to our narratives. Finally, we are continuing to review nouns- Common and Proper and to add “snap” words to our class word wall. These words are expected to be spelled correctly when we are writing.

Math - Unit 2

This week we completed five center

rotations. Each rotation focused on

a different skill including two and

three digit addition, math facts, and

place value. Learners were also

introduced to regrouping one’s. This

is often a difficult skill for learners to

grasp, so please take a few minutes

this weekend to have your child

practice this skill with you.

Next week we will continue

regrouping ones and introduce

regrouping tens.

Learners will complete Lessons 23,

24, 25 and 26. There will be a Simple

Solutions quiz on Friday.

Science:

This week we continued our

exploration of matter. Learners

participated in a Mass Lab. I am

looking forward to conducting our

first experiment this week called

“Matter is Poppin’.” As a class we

will observe evidence of gas in

balloons as well as what reaction

occurs when you pour Pop Rocks

into soda.

In addition, we will continue building

our vocabulary in our Interactive

Notebooks. Last week we focused

on solid, liquid and gas. This week

our vocabulary words are matter,

mass and property.

Religion-In lieu of Mass on Friday, we met with our Prayer Partners! We talked about St. Edward, since Thursday was his feast day, and we made crowns of gold. The learners also did a getting to know you activity. Super fun!

This next week will be looking at Chapter 3: The Word of God. God tells his people about himself through the Bible. The Bible is God’s inspired Word written by humans. We will have a Chapter 3 test on Friday.

God’s Shining Light:2A- Samantha Sparks2B- Ryan Rittichier2C- Brett Whitmore

Raquel Canterbury, Lauren Harkins, Molly Merz, Libby Rue will be taking up the gifts during the Offetory.

Social Studies-The learners took their Lesson 1 & 2 quiz on Friday. Quizzes will come home in the Friday folder and the grade will be posted to Sycamore. We will continue to work through Unit 3 next week. We will be discussing Our National Government.
