    LOVE LISTENS Sunday, October 11, 2020 – Thanksgiving/Pentecost 19

Service Order: CW Evening Prayer Vespers

A warm welcome to those visiting us this morning. Here at St. Paul we preach Christ crucified, whose suffering and death paid for our sins and earned for us the gift of everlasting life. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with Pastor Goetzinger or Pastor Thompson. We pray that you return to worship with us again.

INFORMATION Restrooms Speak with an usher for the location. Hearing assistance devices are available. Speak with an usher.

FOR PARENTS Changing table is located in the washroom next to the kitchen downstairs. Quiet space for children behind the glass walls at the entryway of church.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH silence for meditation.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the deep love you showed me on the cross. Help me to show my love for you and for those around me by listening to you: by daily turning my mind to your word so that I know what you desire for me. How can I know and do what you want if I do not listen to you? Thank you for your word. In your saving name I pray, Amen.

  • INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION ————————————————————————————————

CW 446 I Am Trusting You, Lord Jesus Stand. M: In the name of the Father and of the Son ✙ and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: As we come before our Holy and Almighty God, we can clearly see that

we have fallen short of his expectation and demand for perfection. We have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. To whom do we turn?

S: (soloist sings) I am trusting you, Lord Jesus, Trusting only you, Trusting you for full salvation, Free and true.

C: We put our trust in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and we confess our sins to him. He alone has lived a perfect life, never once sinning against the will of God the Father. We bring our sins to him and leave them at the foot of his cross.

S: (soloist sings) I am trusting you for pardon; At your feet I bow, For your grace and tender mercy Trusting now.

C: We trust in Christ alone for the pardoning of our sins. His willing sacrifice on the cross was “a pleasing aroma” to the Lord, and his blood alone has washed away the sins of the world.

S: (soloist sings) I am trusting you for cleansing In the crimson flood, Trusting you who made me holy By your blood.

M: You are right to trust in the cleansing power of the blood of Christ. It is through the blood of Christ that your sins have been removed forever, and you have been given a new life, free from guilt and shame. Christ covers you with his robe of righteousness and purity, giving you the strength and ability to live a new life of thanksgiving and praise. Let us trust in Christ alone to guide us through this life and into the next.

S: (soloist sings) I am trusting you to guide me; You alone shall lead, Ev'ry day and hour supplying All my need.

To invoke God is to call out to him to be with us tonight, which he promises in his Word he will do. “Wherever two or three come together in my name, there I am with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

To confess is to admit we’re far from perfect and so, without Jesus, shouldn’t be with a perfect God.

The pastor absolves us of our sins, that is, reminds us we’re forgiven because of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

  • PRAYER OF THE DAY ————————————————————————————————

M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray: Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to

us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits, and serve you in willing obedience; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen. Be seated. FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32 ———————————————————————————————— God implores us to listen to his clear law and change our ways, because God is perfectly just in his response to sinful and righteous action.

The word of the LORD came to me: “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:

“ ‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer

quote this proverb in Israel. For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.

“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life. Because they consider all the offences they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die. Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

“Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offences; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offences you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!

We believe that the Bible is the source of all spiritual truth, and so we read lessons from it to learn who God is and what he’s done for us throughout history and still today.

  • PSALM 25 ————————————————————————————————

Spoken responsively M: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; C: in you I trust, O my God. M: Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, C: for they are from of old. M: Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; C: according to your love remember me, for you are good, O Lord. M: Turn to me and be gracious to me, C: for I am lonely and afflicted. M: Look upon my affliction and my distress C: and take away all my sins. M: Guard my life and rescue me, C: for I take refuge in you. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was

in the beginning, is now, and will be forever, Amen.

SECOND LESSON 2 Corinthians 13:5-8 ———————————————————————————————— Paul tells us to think seriously about how we live and whether it reflects our faith.

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.

VERSE OF THE DAY Philippians 2:10,11 ———————————————————————————————— M: Alleluia. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every tongue

confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Alleluia. C: These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

the Son of God. Alleluia! Stand.

Psalms are songs written thousands of years ago. We still worship with them today.

  • GOSPEL Matthew 21:28-32 ———————————————————————————————— Jesus tells us that if we really want to show our love for God, we will listen and obey what he tells us in his word.

“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

“ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He

answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the

prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

Be seated. HYMN OF THE DAY Now Thank We All Our God ————————————————————————————————

sung by soloist, found in Christian Worship 610:1,3

1 Now thank we all our God With hearts and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, In whom his world rejoices, Who from our mother’s arms Has blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love And still is ours today.

3 All praise and thanks to God The Father now be given, The Son, and him who reigns With them in highest heaven, The one eternal God, Whom earth and heav’n adore! For thus it was, is now, And shall be evermore. SERMON Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32 ————————————————————————————————

How God Plays the Blame Game

Gospel means “Good News,” and so this is a reading from the historical biographies of Jesus that tells us the good news of how Jesus came into this world to save us.

The Hymn of the Day is meant to especially celebrate today’s unique theme.

A sermon is simply a longer reflection on one of today’s readings from the Bible.

  • APOSTLES’ CREED ———————————————————————————————— Stand. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERING ———————————————————————————————— To give electronically, visit StPaulOttawa.org and click on GIVE in the top menu. To give physically, either drop in the basket in the centre aisle, back of church, after the service, or mail to our church address.

Christians give offerings as a form of worship, to show God our thanks and dependence on him, and to support our work within the community and world.

The Apostle’s Creed is a summary of the Christian faith based on statements of faith from the 100s. It is a summary of the facts our assurance of forgiveness is based on.

  • PRAYER OF THE CHURCH & LORD’S PRAYER ———————————————————————————————— M: Heavenly Father, we thank you for preserving your word for thousands of

years so that we can gather around it today and listen. C: We thank you for the countless prophets and apostles, parents,

neighbours and friends who shared the Good News. M: We thank you that through the Holy Spirit you have given us hearts that

listen. C: We thank you that we know our sins are forgiven and eternal life is

ours, freely given by you through Jesus’ death on the cross. M: Help us to continue to listen to your word, to regularly repent and hear that

our sins are forgiven. C: Help us to build lives and homes around your word. Help us to gather

regularly in worship and bible class. M: Help us to make the sharing of your Gospel message the priority of how

we function as a church family. C: Help us to freely give our time, treasures, and talents for the sake of

making it as easy as possible for the people in our city to hear your gospel message.

M: Continue to bless our city, neighbourhoods and families, and motivate us by your grace to respond to listening to the gospel message through acts of love to our neighbours.

C: Help us to serve those around us, to be thoughtful, merciful, and giving neighbours.

M: As we look forward to celebrating Thanksgiving, we give thanks to you for caring for us, your Church.

C: Thank you for preserving us according to your will through COVID-19. Thank you for working through our country's first responders, healthcare workers, police, government workers, and all who have given so much for our health. But we are most thankful for your gospel promises, which have kept us through these hard times: You have never left us or forsaken us, and you have worked through all this for our eternal good. Heavenly Father, thank you.

M: We bring this all to you, our God who put his love into action by dying on the cross for us, our saving Triune God: Father, Son, and Spirit,

    C: Amen.

The Prayer of the Church is our biggest prayer of the day, focusing on our day’s theme and asking God to care for us, our community, and the world.

    7

  • C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

CLOSING PRAYER AND BLESSING ———————————————————————————————— S: [the soloist sings the following] God be with you till we meet again,

By his counsels guide, uphold you, With his sheep securely fold you - God be with you till we meet again. Till we meet, Till we meet, Till we meet at Jesus' feet. Till we meet, Till we meet - God be with you till we meet again.

M: Almighty God, grant to your Church the Holy Spirit and the wisdom that comes from above. Let nothing hinder your Word from being freely proclaimed to the joy and edifying of Christ’s holy people, so that we may serve you in steadfast faith and confess your name as long as we live, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen. M: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favour and ✙ give you peace.

C: Amen. S: [the soloist sings the following] God be with you till we meet again,

'Neath his wings protecting hide you, Daily manna still provide you - God be with you till we meet again. Till we meet, Till we meet, Till we meet at Jesus' feet. Till we meet, Till we meet - God be with you till we meet again.

as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Two-thousand years ago, Jesus taught his disciples to pray with these words. We use them still today, able to call God our Father because of Jesus.

We always end with a blessing used by believers for thousands of years, reminding us we leave as children loved by God and at peace with him, all because of Jesus.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST, With winter fast approaching we find ourselves in a bit of a situation. For many years now, snow removal has been provided by a snow plowing service for the parking lot and between the church and Parish House. The entrances and ramp has been kept clean thanks to Delbert Nitschke. Delbert is one of our senior members and has rightfully decided he can no longer perform this service. I want to thank Delbert for his years of service to our Church. It was most appreciated. However we must now ask if anyone in the congregation would be willing to step up and fill the void. We cannot depend on our most senior members to do these tasks.

It requires that someone be available to clear the ramp and 4 small stairways, walkways and entrances to the church after snowfalls. After most snowfalls this work can take 30 to 45 minutes. Other than for Wednesday evening service and Sunday mornings, this task can be done at your convenience when the snow is light.

The alternative would be to pay an outside service to handle it at a considerable expense.

Please give some thought as to whether you can offer assistance. The ideal situation would be if several individuals volunteered to share the load.

If you are able to offer your help, please contact Dennis Gougeon at [email protected] or call me at 613-282-2257.

    Thank you.

    Yours in Christ,

Dennis Gougeon Chairman, Board of Properties
