YOUGHAL DRUG AND

ALCOHOL PROJECT Youghal 'Drugs Project', or more officially referred to as 'YoughalCommunity Based Drug Initiative' (bit of a mouthful!), is embark-ing on its third year of operations in the community. The project isbased in Nagle House on South Abbey. The service is available toanyone in the catchment area. This area covers Youghal toMidleton, and has been known to accommodate any neighbours inWest Waterford who find access to Youghal easier than that ofDungarvan!Projects such as ours were set up by the Southern Regional DrugsTask Force in counties Cork and Kerry (not Cork City, whose serv-ices are delivered through the Local Drugs Task Force). In Tralee,Killarney, Listowel, Cobh, Bandon, Mallow, Fermoy,Mitchelstown, Macroom and Youghal, a voluntary managementcommittee is working alongside a 'host agency' to employ aCommunity Drugs Worker (that's me!) to work with individualsand families who are experiencing problems with drug use andmisuse. The host agency for the Youghal project is Foróige.Youghal Drugs Project is only one of three youth service bodiesmanaged by Foróige in the Nagle House space. The project uses an intervention based approach. The idea is to tryand help the person here in the community, and if more specificservices are required, educate them on such and refer where need-ed. Most people are so entrenched in the problem that they are notaware of the services available to help them with their difficulties. Some people have a stereotype in their heads that a person with adrink or drug problem is the homeless 'wino', or the addict in thegutter with a needle in their arm. These stereotypes are not trueand can damage the hopes of an individual seeking out help. Mostdrug users will compare and contrast themselves with other drugusers (When I use the word 'drug', I am also referring to the drugthat is alcohol). They will say silently to themselves (and outloud!), "I'm not as messed up as him, or she uses more than I do,therefore I'm okay". However, in the project the person will beasked to focus on self, and ask themselves how happy they arewith their reality. If they have any wish to address their way of life, then they will be afforded the opportunity to do this. There is no'magic wand' but change is possible if the person desires it, and issupported through the process.Family Support is a very important part of the project. Many timesfamily members will present with similar symptoms and feelingsto those of the drug-user. Isolation, shame, embarrassment, guilt, fear, feeling of "going mad", physical problems, etc can present inboth the drug-user and the family member. For this reason, it isimperative that we work with and support the families in their ownrecovery. Indeed, sometimes it happens that the family member wework with can improve their own quality of life without us havingever met with the drug-user. We can support them in letting gotheir fear of what will happen if they don't 'pick up the pieces', andaccepting that they cannot control the drug user. This shift in atti-tude and behaviour can immeasurably change the life of the 'con-cerned person' (i.e. parent, child, partner, sibling, friend). The proj-ect has formed a Family Support Group that meets weekly. Themembers are made up of individuals whose life has been/is affect-ed by drug misuse. Many of those attending our project have availed of the acupres-sure massage provided by Debbie Long in our project. Debbie hasa great quality with the project-users and has been instrumental inthe building of the projects success. People come back week afterweek to avail of the service that they feel helps them deal with theday-to-day stresses that are present in their lives. Debbie alsoworks on breathing education and living attitudes with the clients. The service is a foundation block of the project as many of its par-ticipants form the nucleus of the Family Support Group. In the past few months particularly, there has been growing inter-est amongst the people attending the project who would like toavail of Debbie's services. However, unfortunately the recentfunding limitations have put a stress on this facility, along with

funding limitations have put a stress on this facility, along withother aspects of the projects day-to-day running. However, thesefunding issues have become a prominent dot on the horizon ofcontemporary life. We can only deal with it as well as possible andmove forward! For anyone who is curious to know, Youghal offers a vast range ofdrugs. These range from the old pillar that is alcohol, to the newerarrivals like heroin (Youghal has presented with particularly highuse). Prescription medication abuse has continued to spiralupwards also. I do not say this to be sensationalist. All towns in theregion face such a trial. However, I would ask you to endeavour toeducate yourselves through the channels available to you. There isa lot of information available if you contact me at the project, or'Google' a particular drug on the internet. This is a good opportu-nity to plug some upcoming events in the project!!....The Southern Regional Drugs Task Force have a 'DrugsAwareness Week' planned for the start of October. This will culmi-nate in a conference in Killarney on the 8th and 9th October.Youghal Community Based Drug Initiative (CBDI) has beenasked to hold an event(s) in the week preceding this conference. These are the details...Monday 5th October at 7.30p.m. in the Holy Family· Speakers from Narcotics Anonymous (people in recovery fromdrug addiction) and Nar-Anon (people who have had to livethrough having a loved one with an addiction) will speak abouttheir life in addiction and share their experience on how they havefound recovery.· Artwork presentation from the Youghal CBDI Family SupportGroup.· SRDTF Development Worker Gordon Kinsley and myself willsay a few words.

Wednesday 7th October at 7.30p.m. in Nagle House! · A staff member of Tabor Lodge Addiction Treatment Centre willdo a presentation on the impact of drugs in a community, on a fam-ily and the individual using.· Artwork presentation from the Youghal CBDI Family SupportGroup.· Myself and Gordon again!! Complimentary therapies such as 'Acupressure Massage' willbe available to the public from 6pm prior to the events Alcoholics Anonymous and An Garda Síochána have also beenasked to participate but I am unable to confirm such at time ofwriting. All details will be available by contacting the project, oron a flyer that will be circulated around the town in the days pre-vious to the 'Drugs Awareness Week'. Also, the week will be cele-brated with an extensive poster campaign highlighting the drugissue and the Youghal Drugs Project. Please don't hesitate to contact the project at any time. We are afree and confidential service.

By Christy Parker A welcoming light has emerged in Youghal's recessionary dark-ness with the news that Jack O'Patsy, the town's previouslyrenowned pottery manufacturer, is back in production. After threemonths of manufacturing stock at Youghal Enterprise Park, theFriar Street retail outlet is now re-opened, with a formal launchdue in the coming weeks. The revitalised business is in "advancednegotiations: with Enterprise Ireland in regard to ongoing devel-opments, says proprietor Pat Collins. The present workforce comprises two pottery makers and threeretail staff, with aspiration to quadruple that number at least, even-tually. Pat believes that moderate expansion, coupled with specif-ic marketing targets, can shape a profitable, sustainable future."We probably expanded too quickly last time," he recalls. "Weended up outsourcing manufacturing to Stoke-on-Trent for exam-ple. We had no specific markets, incurred too many overheads andfailed to retain staff as the building boom arrived. This time it'sback to basics, with a more compact organisation producing tradi-tional, hand-made merchandise." Prior to closing in 2003, its eight year existence saw Jack O'Patsy'sestablish a 60-strong workforce, serving over 250 accounts and anation wide market penetration. Its demise preceded further prob-lems in the industry, including the closure of Kilkenny'sStoneware Jackson and Stephen Pearce's celebrated enterprise atShanagarry currently in receivership. With the Irish economy anchored to misery, it scarcely seemsopportune to be unfurling the sails of enterprise. Former electri-cian Pat sees things in a different light. "I think in recession peo-ple have more goodwill towards homemade products," he enthus-es. "To be successful we need people to think of us in terms ofChristmas, wedding presents, etc. We also intend targeting thecountry's top dozen or so craft shops." Hand-painted designs Craft shops provide gateways to the world and he is planningaccordingly. "Very few potteries in Ireland produce anything thatis specifically Irish," he begins. "Amongst new ranges we intendintroducing, will be one depicting hand-painted scenes from Celticmythology and Irish & local landscapes." Several artists arealready earmarked and he cites Youghal's lighthouse as one exam-ple of their possible focus. Though far from excluding the home market, he concurs withEnterprise Ireland's view that such a range "has particularly highpotential amongst the Irish diaspora, in a high-end, valued-endedmarket." Labour costs will necessitate a larger price tag "but we'realready getting a lot of positive feedback from the States andEurope," he confirms.Another new range initiative involves "blue and white combina-tion." This has nothing to do with Waterford's seemingly doomedcrusade to capture a second All-Ireland hurling title, relating tocontrasting colours, not fortunes. "The reaction has so far beenvery positive," says Dunmanway-born Pat, as if reflecting hiscounty's anticipation of another Cork versus Deise decider. Further fresh new initiatives are anticipated in terracotta ware pro-duction. As Pat explains, "Terracotta clay is red and generally hadless quality of wear then stoneware which, fired at 1260 degrees,is ideal for microwaves and dishwashers. But we've been workingwith a laboratory in Northern Ireland at bringing a terracotta rangeon market that can withstand high temperatures. It's a major sell-ing point if we do."Pat explains also that the earthenware is currently source fromWexford but material may be acquired from the nearby Tourig indue course. Stoneware is imported, being indigenous to southernEngland, at closest. Retaining the pastSo much for new fashion, but the traditional Jack O'Patsy fare willcontinue to flourish also, including the Badger Hill range, gar-nered when the company purchased that Wexford brand back in1997. Meanwhile tree months of renewed production has brought an

average outputper week ofover 700 mugs, plates, bowls, lamps andvases, withm e r c h a n d i s ee x c e e d i n g€120,000 nowin stock. The shop itself -f o r m e r l yHorgan's dualcinema com-plex- is alsodestined for diversity. Pat hope "to install a work area in the sec-ond cinema at the rear of the premises to produce the Badger Hilland other gas fired ranges. We'd also like to run pottery coursesthere," he adds. The first floor, with a seating capacity for 120, was a popularrestaurant in the Jack O'Patsy heyday and history is set for a repeathere too. "Capri Bay on South Main Street is relocating thereshortly," informs Pat. "We'll probably install a wrought iron gateinside the shop entrance, leaving a good area for a foyer at the footof the stairs leading to the restaurant. We'll light up the shop atnight to make it more spectacular." Yes indeed, the recession is alittle less dark in Youghal.

* To celebrate the new beginning, Jack O'Patsy's is offering 30%reductions on acquired Stephen Pearce pottery. Offer while stockslast. Inquiries: (024) 91083

The club is very excited at the recent signing of Rebecca Storm forthis years Rotary Christmas Charity Concert on ThursdayDecember 3rd. By now there is huge following of the very professional produc-tion, produced each year at the Rotary Concert, the artists areworld renowned, performances are second to none and the sur-roundings dressed to the highest standard and full of the festivespirit. Past performers have included Tommy Flemming, PhilCoulter, The Three Tenors to name but a few. PRO DorothyHeaphy says that they are over the moon to have succeeded in get-ting Rebecca Storm again this year as she is performing a special'25 year' hits show. Rebecca performed for us in 2007 and wasdelighted with the welcome and audience appreciation which shereceived here in Youghal. Club President Karen Farrell assures usthat this year will have everything that we have become to expectfrom the Rotary Concerts and says that whilst all of these artists areexpensive to get, the reward of bringing such performers to ourtown for the people of our town and surrounding areas is wellworth it. It is the treat everyone now looks forward to, theirChristmas outing. We rely totally on ticket sales to cover the costof the artist and generally speaking our profit which is always forcharity comes mainly from the raffle proceeds. We have not sought sponsorship in the last few years and this doesput some pressure on us with the costs incurred. However alongthe way we are shown tremendous kindness by the local GAA whonot alone give us the hall very willingly but manpower on the dayand night as well, setting up chairs and manning the car park etc.We try to advertise as much as we can on a tight budget but wordof mouth is very important. It is just so rewarding to be stopped onthe street by someone who wants to tell you what a great night theyhad, some take the trouble to write and tell us, it's fantastic. PRODorothy Heaphy say's 'thats one of the Rotary Club's aims....togive to the community, to be a service within it. Whilst Rotary is an International Organisation that supports manyInternational Charities funded by Rotary, we are also a serviceorganisation who want to give something at local level too. Wehave not nominated our charity for this year yet but will do in thenext few weeks, our Memorial Christmas Tree will happen againthis year also thanks to the goodness of Mr. Ken Brooks who pro-vide us with a secure venue for it. Drugs Awareness Week

Although here in Ireland our climate is usually fairly mild, thewind and dampness cause a high level of heat loss from our build-ings. An uninsulated building is an enormous drain on heat, andthe heating bills paid on it are essentially money down the drain.Insulation is something which any homeowner cannot afford toignore. Whether your motivations are saving the planet, or simplysaving your pocket, there are many important benefits of homeinsulation including reduced heating bills and reduced carbonemissions. Two of the main types of home insulation are attic insulation andbonded bead cavity wall insulation. The latter is a process where-by the cavity space between a building's inner and outer walls arefilled with polystyrene beads, which are injected into the cavity viasmall holes. The Irish Government recently introduced a grant scheme towardshome insulation which can cover approximately 50% of the costof insulating your home (depending on size). Announcing thescheme, the Minister for Communications, Energy and NaturalResources Eamon Ryan explained that the new measures couldlead to heating bill reductions of about €700 per annum for indi-vidual households. The application process is straightforward andthe scheme is open to all houses built before 2006. See www.sei.iefor further details or contact your local grant approved insulationprovider, ECOWISE INSULATION directly on 024 20714.

All the leading road bowlers inIreland will participate as well as the top bowlers from Germanyand Holland. The most prestigious prizes are the King of theRoads and the Queen of the Roads, but the event is augmented bythree other events. The Hurley's of Midleton King of the Roads is a who's who of thebest bowlers in Europe. The other semi-final has European Road Bowling championDavid Murphy against his brother Aidan, who is also reigningKing of the Roads and current Munster champion, and Germanchampion Henning Feyen. To win either semi-final will require aphenomenal effort, but whoever goes all the way the followingday will certainly be worthy of the title King of the Roads 2009. There has been a massive buzz about the arrival of Dutch teenagesuperstar Silke Tulk for the Pizza Plus Queen of the Roads. Shewas the star of the 2008 European Championships winning a goldmedal in both the Road and Dutch Moors events and taking anunprecedented bronze medal from the Germans in the their spe-cialist lofting arena. More…The second semi-final sees All-Ireland champion and formerQueen of the Roads Dervla Toal-Mallon against reigning QueenMaria Noonan and German Champion Simone Davids. The twoIrish women are intense rivals, but they will not have things theirown way. It will be Davids second successive year at Ballincurrig. She will be hoping last year's run will bring her to the point whereshe can emulate the great Antje Schottler and Kerstin Friedrichswho have previously won the title for Germany. The Jim O'Driscoll Cup has three of the country's top intermediateplayers in contention, at least two of whom will be bowling seniorin 2010. In Friday's semi-final All-Ireland champion WillieO'Donovan takes on emerging star David Hubbard for the right toplay Ulster champion Martin Toal in Sunday's final. As parents andmembers of the Juvenile Club it is only right that as many as pos-sible support the work, as it will be our children that will benefitmost from this in the years to come.

Another busy week on the field of play. Our senior team playedBallinhassig at Castle Rd on a muggy Sat morning. We were slowto start and Ballincollig had 2 points before Clare Keohane regis-tered our first point from a free. Point no. 2 also came from Clarealong with point no. 3. Ella Ryan scored point number four to levelthe game at 4 all at half time. Ballinhassig came back out all gunsblazing and were up to 1-8 with in a short time and we looked tobe in real trouble. Jessica O'Shea started the rally back with a pointand Angela Walsh had the next one. Noelle O'Donovan struck 3fine points and it was starting to get to the nail biting stage asStephanie drew us one closer. The rosary beads were out on thesideline and sure enough they worked with Angela getting theequalising point just before the final whistle. Kilbrittan-Timoleague are our next opponents in a few weeks time. On Wed our u1s played Carrigtwohill in the East Cork semi final. This was a game of two halves. We were lucky to be level at halftime but the girls after a few words from the three wise men uppedtheir game in the second half and ran out easy winners. The finalof this competition and the U13 final take place as a double head-er this Sat. 3rd at 11:30 in Killeagh. Support for both matcheswould be greatly appreciated. Friday night it was a trip to Cloughduv and thanks to all the par-ents who made the journey. Cloughduv opened the scoring with apoint before Kate Murphy replied with a point for us, which wasquickly followed by a point from Shauna Landers. Cloughduvthen got two more points. Despite a good effort and some toughplay there were no more scores before half time leavingCloughduv up a point. Jessica Treacy opened the half with a love-ly goal and Cloughduv followed that with a point. The next scorewas a goal from Kate Murphy. Cloughduv tagged on two morepoints before we started to pull away with a goal from Aoife Walshand three points from Shauna Keniry and Jessica Treacy to leavethe final score 3-5 to 6 points. This game saw a great display ofstrength by all the girls but the goal keeping by Jessica Swayne

was the winning factor. The team now progresses to the Countyfinal. On Sat morning in brilliant sunshine our U10s participatedin a blitz down the field with Ballincollig and Carrigtwohill pro-viding the opposition. All had such fun and the lolly prizes werewell sought after. The same morning our U14s contested the coun-ty final of their competition in Mahon, where the Glen providedthe opposition. In what was a well-contested match our girls weresuccessful by 4points with captain Ali-Rose picking up the trophyon behalf of the team. With a fine performance by Laura Treacyearning her the player of the match accolade. All you who enjoyed these great games during the week pleaseremember our Church Gate Collection this weekend 3-4th Oct.Your financial support is needed and will be greatly appreciated. On a final note we would like to congratulate Mary O'Connor onwinning her 7th All Ireland Camogie title and on captaining thefootballers to their fifth straight title on Sunday and also Noel andall the girls on what was a phenomenal achievement.

Youghal News.....October 1st 2009

By Christy Parker. Eight Youghal cyclistshave made history by com-pleting the inaugural RaceAround Ireland challenge.Team Youghal competedthe trek in 90 hours and6mins. The team finishedninth overall from 21entries, including individ-ual and teams. Their solerivals in their 8-man sec-tion failing to finish. The Youghal men complet-ed the task "without somuch as a puncture," saysteam organiser GerFlanagan. "It was extreme-ly tough but we all finishedin one piece. Considering itwas a World rankingevent, we can be proud ofour achievement," he adds. A total of 65 cyclists ofvarious nationalities departed Navan on "the world's second tough-est ultra-endurance race" behind the annual Race Across America.

Departing and ending in Navan, thepredominantly coastal 2,130kmroute visited 25 counties and tra-versed several mountain ranges onboth sides of the Irish border, plusPatrick's Hill in Cork. The competitors comprised threecategories: solo (17), 4-personteams (11) and 8-person teams (2).Though most competitors were rac-ing cyclists, they included FabioBiasiolo, Italy's world ultra-marathon number1, Canada's 2007North American 24-hourChampion, Caroline van den Bulk.None could match Derry's Irish

endurance record holder Joe Barr, who returned to Navan in a solocyclist winning time of 108 hrs. 12 mins. Only four individualsfinished and just 14 entries in total completed the gruesome chal-lenge. Each entry paid €2,000 to compete. Team Youghal participated onbehalf of the Emer Casey Foundation and all money raised went tothe charity, as they covered their own entry and expenses. TheFoundation honours 27 year-old Emer, who died from

ovarian/uterine cancer in 2006 and has raised over €400,000 forcancer research since its inception. The Youghal team, included an electrician, a sailor, a traffic war-den, a care worker and a retired school principal. They were: GerFlanagan, Tommy Roche, Christy McCarthy, Eoin Whyte, KieranGroeger, Jamie Field, Stephen McGovern, Michael Hines. Theywere supported by a strong back up team of Robert Heffernan,Peter Morgan, Claude and Michael McCarthy, Joe Davis andJamie Field, travelling in a camper van and cars supplied by KIAMotors, Youghal. Support services were supplied by Tom andBrian Fitzgerald and Peter Coady. Their suc-cess owed much to tactics that saw themdeploy two cyclists on ½ hour rotas, in hourblocks of four. Team Youghal would like to thank sponsorsKIA, the support volunteers and "gratitudealso to CRY, Mag Carey, the Youghal fireservice and everyone who turned out to wel-come us through Youghal on the Saturdayevening," says spokesman Ger Flanagan. Youghal-39 Wexford Rangers-12 Sunday 20th SeptemberYoughal ladies get off to winning ways in their first season outing. The squad travelled to Wexford rangers home ground for theirfriendly debut, conditions proved appealing for the youthful fastrunning side. Youghal set quickly into gear with a well worked tryby winger Lucy Barry, minutes later Deirdre Cronin touched downfor another 5pionter. Youghal ladies looked best against the sea-sonally inexperienced Wexford side. A further three tries went toYoughal in the first half Ciara O’ Flaherty, Sarah Hogan andDeirdre Cronin. However, the Leinster side retaliated with twotries of their own leaving the score at half time Youghal-27Wexford-12.Youghal went into the second half with a different game plan, try-ing out new things and players were rotated constantly these freshfeet obviously gave the travelling Youghal side a better form ofdefence as Wexford couldn’t add to their scoreboard where asYoughals Kellie Faul ran in another two tries for the Youghal side. The fulltime score ended Youghal-39 Wexford-12.The Youghal ladies were delighted with the result of their first2009/2010 season and with the edition of new players Sarah Flavinand Julie Ryan the squad hope the success will continue. SAVAGE1st Anniversary

In loving Memory of Wonderful Father(Paddy) who went to heaven on the 29th

September 2008

God looked around his garden and saw an empty space

He then looked down upon Earth and saw your tired face

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest

Gods garden must be beautiful He only takes the best

God knew that you were reasy and that your time had come

So he closed your eyes and took you home

To Sadie and eternal rest

Lovingly remembered by Peter, Anne, Nikita and Isha

Paddy SavageIn loving memory or our dear dad

Lonely is the home without you, life to us is not the same,

All the world would be like heaven,

If we could have you home again.

Put your arms around him Lord and give him special care.

Love and miss you Daddy, lots of love from your special sonand daughter Patrick and Teresa xx

GrandadThe love we have for your Grandad will never fade away,

We think of him our special friend throughout each passing day.

The memories of his laughter his warm and loving smile,

His eyes so full of happiness, his heart that of a child.

Love and missing you every day granddad, Love you always your loving

grandchildren Robert, Andrew, Karen & Aidan xxx

SAVAGE1st Anniversary

Treasured memories of my wonderful Dad PADDYon his first anniversary. Our Lady of Lourdes protect him.

I sat beside you as you were slipping away. I kissed you and gently stroked your

hair. I told you that I loved you,and how I would miss you so.

Oh Dad I really didn’t want to let you go. My Dad was someone special

Someone to be admired. We know he’s looking out for us

In everything we do. And so we know that where he is , he’s watching in full

view, Looking out from Heavens window ; Leaning on Heavens gate.

Its a lonely home without you Dad, an empty bed an empty chair

A Fathers love no longer there. The happy smile you always had

When we walked in the door. All that is gone for evermore.

Many memories in my mind, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry,

The times we shared, the laughs we had, the love and the kisses we got

from you Dad. These are the things I miss the most.

A true friend I could turn to, when times were good or bad.

One of lifes greatest blessings, that wonderful man , that I call Dad,

Always in our thoughts and prayers. Forever loved and deeply missedYour loving daughter Breda and Son in law Ted.XX

Youghal News.....October 1st 2009

U14 footballers end their season with an emphatic win overAghada in the League Final.Played in Copperalley in front of a sizeable crowd, Youghal start-ed the Game with a freedom not seen in the County Semi Final ofa few weeks back where they were beaten by an Illen Rovers side. The hunger shown in the first 10 minutes of Thursday's clash wastruly immense with Matthew Farrell proving what a huge find Hewas this Year with a string of hard hits coming out with the ballafter each one. In truth the Half back line is the rock on which theselection committee of Fergal Keenaghan, Stephen Twomey, PaulDempsey and Aidan Finn have built their Team. Ronan O'Sullivanand Cash Ranson play their part along side Matthew with the for-mer probably the only U14 player in the country to point from a45.The introduction of Cash to the half back line gave ColinKeenaghan who captained the side the freedom of a roving roll inthe Half forward line in which he excelled and was a thorn in theside of the Aghada side all evening, popping up in the half backline and in the full forward line taking score after score. DylanMason had little to do in this one but again had a great seasonbetween the sticks. In front of Him stands the rock sollid ChrisMorrisson. The only thing you can say about Chris is that youwont pass Him or if you do it will hurt. Flanked by Conor Finnwho had a super Game on Thursday and a fast improving player, and the very impressive Mark Flaherty who barely put a footwrong all Year, they are a very solid defensive force. At mid field you have a very gifted player in Aidan O'Neill whowill run all Day for you and is a superb carrier of the Ball.Alongside Aidan is the hard hitting grafter Danny Walsh. Danny isthe work horse of the pair, putting in the hard hits and breaking upplay while Aidan picks up the pieces. In front of these is the excit-ing half forward line of the afore mentioned Colin Keenaghan, theexcellent Cillian Daly, another super addition to this Years paneland the hard working Andrew Joyce. Up front is where the teamtakes a life of it's own. Full forward Aaron Hogan is a target Mantowering over any Full Back he came accross this season and isdeadly with the ball in His hands as He proved on Thursday witha hattrick of Goals. Aaron has the joy of being able to sit on top ofthe small parrallellogram as He has the speed merchant TomasColeman in one corner who covers a huge amount of Ground andis a fantastic tallent and a joy to watch when He collects posses-sion and cuts inside driving straight for Goal leaving defenders inHis wake. The other corner is occupied by the charismatic OllieDempsey. Ollie often looks disinterested, but this is just a cover. With a flash of brilliance He can turn a game in an instance and isarguably the best finisher in the Team. It has been a fantastic Year for the Youghal Boys who only TwoYears ago were the whipping boys of East Cork losing by big mar-gins week after week. Last Year they made huge strides and wereunlucky to come accross a home town ref in the Championship, but this Year with a couple of new faces and a well structuredcoaching staff they have come into their own and are a hugeprospect for the coming Years.A big well done to all concerned.Aghada BlitzYoughal travelled to Rostellan on Saturday 12th Sept to take partin the under 10`s play off finals as guests of Aghada. On a gloriousday for hurling in the lovelly surrondings of Rostellan a veryyoung Youghal team took part in a mini blitz.First up were thehosts Aghada who had the edge age wise and expierence wise , butthe Youghal lads gave it everthing and even shook their hosts witha well taken goal from Adam Born and points from Jake O`Brienand Liam Ansboro Moylan ,but Aghada held firm and ran outeventual winners. The second game pitted Youghal againstCarrignabhfear who ran riot over Youghal early in the year.Todaywas a different story with a great display of hurling from thelads, keeping the match tense till the final puck out with Carrigwinning by a single goal.Best for Youghal on the day were JakeO`Brien and Evan Kennedy as well as the two goalkeepers Ruairi

McSweeney and Peter Kirk. Many thanks to our hosts Aghada whoprovided medals and refreshments to all involved.Under 9 Football BlitzYoughal under 9`s played in their first football blitz on home soilon Saturday 19th September. The first match pitted them against astrong Kiltha Og side.Youghal started well with the wind at theirbacks and ran up a good half time lead with Liam Ansboro Moylanand Jake O`Brien swapping scores. The second half was a battleagainst Kiltha and the wind and Youghal were on course for vic-tory, been two points up in injury time`then Kiltha goaled to undoall the lads great effort and stole victory. The second match saw anow very determined Youghal team take on Midleton. No mercywas shown in this match and two great finishes from Keitho`Connor set Youghal on the way.Christian Persaud then explod-ed into life scoring a great goal and point and giving the Midletondefence a torrid time.Youghal never let up and ran out comfortablewinners. The last match was against Russell Rovers who startedwith the wind at their backs but outstanding goalkeeping fromAaron O`Reagan broke their spirit and the lads once they got intothe lead were relentleess and never took the foot off the brake tosee off a brave effort from Russell Rovers. The lads had agreat dayand complete with medals and refreshments are looking foward tomany more to come.LOTTO:As you all know the Lotto has not been won for over a Year. lastweeks numbers drawn were 2,9,19 & 24.The Jackpot is at it's legallimit so each week the additional funds are added to a backupjackpot which will come into play once the main lotto is won. Thismeans that their will be two big jackpots up for play with two veryhappy winners over the coming months.45 CARD DRIVE RESULTS:25/08/2009 1st Mary & Kevin, 2nd Sheelagh & Mick, 3rd DividedMary & Joan and Gene & Maughread. Fr.O'Neill's Camogie ClubYoughal V. Carrigtohill U11 Imokilly League FinalOur U11’s had an unbeaten road to the final of the imokilly leaguewhich took place on Saturday the 12th of September at YoughalGAA grounds. The sun was splitting the stones to what turned outto be a thrilling and nail biting final. Both teams arrived full ofexcitement on a gorgeous day in the seaside town. The game was always going to be a tight affair and it took 15 min-utes before a score was to come. Shauna O’Connell provided plen-ty of balls into her forwards for Youghal and her work was reward-ed with Erin Galvin getting a goal from play. Carrigtohill respond-ed with a great point from play 5 minutes later.Shauna O’Connell also got a point from play before the half timewhistle. Our Goalkeeper and Captain, Niamh Kelly, also pulled offtwo fine saves in this half showing great confidence and leadershipbetween the posts.Louise Dempsey shined for us throughout the game clearing anddelivering plenty of ball from the half back line. The second half started with as much anticipation as the first withEmer Farrell, Catriona O’Keeffe, Ciara Crowley and ChloeLanders all doing Trojan work in the forwards to try and snatch agoal for us. Our back line of Niamh Roche, Elizabeth Brennan andLaura White were under pressure in the second half as Carrigtohillpiled on the pressure. This paid off for Carrigtohill as they got twogoals from play. This didn’t put our girls’ heads down as 10 min-utes later the hard work and determination of all the girls on thepitch rewarded them with a well deserved goal from AoifeO’Neill. Unfortunately, with most of the ball down in our forwardline, we could not convert with numerous wides from play.Carrig again responded to this with another point from a free andwith the clock ticking we ran out of time to try and come back, inthe end loosing out by a solitary point. This was heart wrenching for this young team and their trainers,Janette Power and Carmel Dempsey, but we are determined tocome back and do bigger and better things next year.We would like to thank everyone that supported the girls on theday and also a big thank you to Doyle’s Take Away in Youghal forproviding food for the girls afterwards. It was greatly appreciated.Final Score: Carrigtohill 2-2, Youghal 2-1Team on the day: Niamh Kelly (Capt), Elizabeth Brennan, LauraWhite, Niamh Roche, Louise Dempsey, Catriona O’Keeffe,Shauna O’Connell, Emer Farrell, Aoife O’Neill, Chloe Landers,Erin Galvin, Ciara Crowley. The opening party of The Youghal Bay Bridge Club took place onThursday night last.An attendance of over 80 enjoyed a great nightof bridge with lots of lovely prizes including "something foreveryone in the audience!"As always the Walter Raleigh "came upTrumps"with the finger food and tasty nibbles. The President, Brid Groeger, espoused the many benefits of play-ing bridge by quoting the writer Colm Toibin. He reckons thatplaying bridge is probably one of the best ways of training to be asintelligent as possible. Along the way, he believes, it will also helpyou to become cunning and imaginative, teach you to use yourmemory, and show you when to be daring and when to be cau-tious.Those of us who have played competitively, even at a lowlevel, know that it also teaches the need for tolerance, patience andacceptance. The President congratulated Jean Kelly on becoming a RegionalMaster and in so doing, bringing another honour to an already suc-cessful bridge club, which can proudly claim many members whohave achieved All Ireland success at the bridge table. All in all, proving that what Colm Toibin has to say is right. Plans are underway to run bridge lessons for beginners starting inOctober. This will be done in conjunction with Cumann na Daoinewho will have more information shortly. On Tuesday night last, September 22nd 2009, April JoannaCurtin’s first public exhibition opened at Gallery 126, NorthMain Street Youghal. April, from Kinsalebeg, has recentlygraduated with an Honours Degree from The CrawfordCollege of Art and Design, Cork where she spent her timeexploring themes of family, childhood and the transience ofmemory. Awarded The Ted and Mary O’ Regan Arts Bursaryin 2007 and the Cork Institute of Technology Purchase Prizein 2009 when one of her pieces was purchased by TheDublin Office of Public Works her work has gone fromstrength to strength and has achieved favourable mention inThe Irish Times Arts section. On opening night the gallery saw a steady stream of visitors whoenjoyed the ambiance and wholesome feel of this intimate exhibi-tion which explores and displays family photographs dating fromthe 1920’s onwards, transformed and manipulated to create a win-dow for the viewer’s engagement. The variety of work in sizes and compositions and the overall flowof the layout created an instant pull and one almost felt entrawled, alone, in the essence of the work. The large pieces, ‘togetheralone’ and ‘factory girls’ offered the viewer an opportunity tostand alongside these vintage characters, whereas the smallerpieces asked of you to stop and peer inside as if into a capsulefrom a time long past. The overall feel of this exhibition was that of rememberance andassociative recollection. Countless times one heard the echo, ‘thisreminds me of trips to cornwell with my gran’, or such personalmemories that are forgotten in the day to day pull of life. The exhibition will continue untill 5.30pm. on Saturday 3rd. ofOctober. Gallery 126 is open from Tuesday to Saturday from10am to 5.30pm. The Gallery will stay open on Thursday 1st. ofOctober untill 8pm. to give everybody a chance to catch this out-standing show. Do not miss this wonderful experience. We lookforward to seeing you.

They will have toget in a lot of training. No one wants to see a repeat of lasts yearseffort !!!!The Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails Over the last few weekends, local Club Man Anthony Kenneallyhas visited Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Park near Ardpatrick inCounty Limerick( about 75min. drive from Youghal ) to see whatall the talk was about over this exciting new Mountain Bike Park. Here is what he had to say about the whole thing.Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail Network is the largest trail net-work of its kind in Ireland and provides many options for off-roadcycling in the mountains. Forest road climbs lead you into tighttwisty single-track with loads of ups and downs, tight turns andtechnical rocky bits. The trails range from the moderate 6 kilome-tre Greenwood loop to the demanding Castlepook loop, over 50kilometres in length! Tough forest road climbs are rewarded withsweeping fast descents guaranteed to leave you smiling! The trail system, designed by one of the world leaders in the sport,is an exciting network constructed to give a challenging andrewarding ride. Each of the loops will present riders with a com-bination of narrow single-track and boardwalk sections and alsohas sections of forest road climbs over short and long distances. The trails are laid out in 5 loops with each loop leading onto thenext. The loops are waymarked in one direction - just pick thecolour of the loop you want to ride and follow the arrows. Thereis more information out on the trails at the start of each loop.Facilities at the trail head include map boards, car parking, toilets, showers and bike wash facilities. Trail friendly accommodation, bike rental and good food are available locally. The Car park opens

from 8am-9pm (Mon-Fri) and 8am - 8pm (Sat-Sun). There is aParking fee of €5 per car but there is no entry fee to any of theMountain Bike Trails. The showers and bike wash facilities areavailable at a cost of €2. More details are available at www.bally-houramtb.com.The first Loop to be tackled by Anthony was the MountrussellLoop ( 17km ). The Mountrussell Loop is a technical and physi-cally demanding version of the shorter Greenwood Loop and fol-lows this as far as Waypoint 1, from where the trails become a bitmore technical, narrower, rockier and steeper with more climbingand more descending. The loop features some steep climbs on for-est roads and single-track as well as long single-track descents. Allof the single-track trails have extremely varied and sometimesvery uneven surfaces, including rocks, loose gravel, mud, waterand roots and are often very narrow (not more than 1m wide) withlots of tight turns, encroaching vegetation and with trees and boul-ders very close to the trail. There are also long sections of elevat-ed timber boardwalk with exposed edges and uneven and some-times slippery surfaces. Follow the Brown waymarkers all the wayto Waypoint 3 where you begin the inward leg of the Loop andeventually pick up the Green waymarkers that lead you back to thecar park. Along the way you will pass Waypoint 2 where you cantake a shortcut back to the car park by going left up the hill to pickup the inward leg of the Loop. All in all, this is a great loop to takefor your first time at the park. The second Loop taken by Anthony was the Garrane Loop ( 35km). The Garrane Loop is a more technical and physically demand-ing version of the Mountrussell Loop and ventures westwardsfrom Waypoint 3 taking in some long and fast single-trackdescents as well as some long and demanding climbs on forestroads, tracks and single-track trails. The single-track found on thisLoop is technical in places with numerous very tight turns, steepdescents and features such as small rock steps, exposed roots andelevated timber boardwalks. Trail surfaces vary a lot includingloose gravel, rocks, mud and water and can be very uneven andextremely narrow with encroaching vegetation, boulders and trees. From waypoint 3 (reached by following the Green then Brownwaymarkers) you pick up White waymarkers passing Waypoints 4,5 and 6 along the way. These waypoints provide opportunities toeither cut short the loop or to extend but the white waymarkerseventually bring you all the way back to Waypoint 3, from whereyou follow the Brown then the Green waymarkers all the way backto the car park. This loop features numerous long climbs and takesin areas of high ground that can be exposed to bad weather. A greattrail for the fit and daring.Again, Anthony felt that this was a very exciting but difficultLoop. It is not for the unfit as it involves mostly climbing throughthe woods on various sides of the mountain. He would advise any-one undertaking this loop to have a good level of bike control andstock up well on food and liquids, as it will take between 3 to 4hours to complete.Overall, Anthony could only confirm that all the talk about thisexciting new Mountain Bike Park was true. In his own words hesaid " the feeling of excitement and the dangerous trill felt whileriding the trails, and in particular the descents, could only bematched by the excitement and trill you felt as a schoolboy doingsomething you knew you shouldn't be doing ". Mmm, wonderwhat he got up too when he was young !!!.Tour Of Spain.Irish rider Philip Deignan (Cervélo Test Team) crossed a seventeenyear gap recently when he took the first Irish Grand Tour stage vic-tory since Stephen Roche won a stage in the 1992 Tour de France. He triumphed on the eighteenth stage of Vuelta a Espana to Avila, beating Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) by three seconds and alsomoved up to an excellent ninth overall. The Letterkenny cyclist was part of a sixteen man breakawaygroup that went clear approximately 50 kilometres after the start. He was one of the strongest in the move and broke clear near theend with former Tour of Switzerland winner Kreuziger, who fin-ished ninth overall in this year's Tour de France.

Deignan pushed the pace on the mainly uphill run to the finish, then manoeuvred Kreuziger to the front before the final rise up tothe finish line. He proved too strong for the Czech rider and fin-ished well clear, taking a dramatic - and well deserved - victory. From there he successfully defended his excellent ninth placeoverall in the Vuelta a España to finish in that position when therace ended in Madrid last Sunday. In addition to that, he has takenthe first top ten overall finish since Stephen Roche finished ninthin the general classification of the 1993 Giro d'Italia.Congratulations to you Philip.Race Around Ireland.Well done to Team Youghal who recently completed this toughevent. A team of eight Youghal cyclists have made history by com-pleting the inaugural Race Around Ireland challenge. The teamfinished a fantastic ninth overall from 23 entries, including indi-vidual and teams as well as being the winners of their section. The Youghal team, including two guest cyclists from Dublin, included an electrician, a care worker and a retired school princi-pal. They were: Ger Flanagan, Tommy Roche, Christy McCarthy,Eoin Whyte, Kieran Groeger, Jamie Field, Stephen McGovern &Michael Hines. They were supported by a nine-strong back upteam travelling in camper vans supplied by KIA motors, Youghal.Their success owed much to tactics that saw them deploy twocyclists on ½ hour rota's, in hour blocks of four. Team Youghalcompleted the trek in 90 hours and 6mins.Team Youghal participated on behalf of the Emer CaseyFoundation and all money raised went to the charity, as they cov-ered their own entry and expenses.Well done to all who took part and we look forward to their possi-ble participation again next year. Weekend Spins. As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin everySunday morning at 9.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub.With all the yearly objectives now completed, its time to winddown the miles and pace so that we can get organized and plan fornext years objectives. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takesbetween 2 to 3 hours and covers on average about 55km ( 35 miles). Holly's Hat-Trick Helps Sea-Siders Sink RiverstownYoughal U-12s girls soccer team won their first 3 points away toRiverstown on Saturday in a tense and exciting encounter. Youghalstarted very brightly and within 3 minutes a brilliant movebetween Amy Benaim and Holly Twomey almost opened the scor-ing. Weaving between the Riverstown defence, Amy and Hollyplayed a series of quick one-twos only to see the keeper saveHolly's effort. Riverstown were taking time to settle and whenHolly Twomey broke through she looked certain to score. The for-ward watched her effort roll past the post and it looked like itmight be one of those days. Youghal kept up the pressure and werewell on top. Lynda Galvin picked up a great position in the box andwhen the ball broke to her she finished coolly to put the visitors 1-0 up. Riverstown finally grew in confidence and breached a strongYoughal defence, led by Sarah Roche, when the excellent Amy O'Lehane dribbled the ball into the box and equalised for the homeside: 1-1. The game swung back in Youghal's favour only 5 min-utes later when hesitation in the Riverstown area was ceased uponby Holly Twomey and the number 9 was never going to miss fromsix yards. Youghal went into the break leading 2-1. Riverstownwere expected to increase the pressure in the second half playingwith a slight hill. However, Louise Dempsey, Sarah Roche,Jennifer Geary and Catriona Savage showed that they are growingas a strong unit and repelled Riverstown's efforts. Aoife O'Sullivan and Amy Benaim were outstanding on the flanks forYoughal. Their efforts allowed Holly Twomey to score her secondand Youghal's third. The in-form striker turned beautifully at theedge of the area and pushed the ball into space. Too quick for herrivals she slid the ball home: 3-1. the goal affected Riverstown andHolly Twomey saved the best for last when she chased back, stolethe ball from a midfielder and outran 4 defenders to complete herhat-trick with a trademark finish to the corner. With Youghal look-ing very comfortable at 4-1 they relaxed and allowed Riverstownback into the game. Riverstown's number 8 Amy O' Lehane wasproving a handfull and scored twice with two fine individual goalsto secure her hat-trick. At 4-3 Youghal started to look uneasy.Riverstown came very close on two occasions to leveling thescore. However, Jennifer Geary closed down Amy O' Lehane bril-liantly and Youghal came back into the game. Aoife O' Sullivanalmost scored in the dying minutes after a great run on the right. The final whistle was very welcome. The girls now have their firstwin and Coach, Rose Sheehan expressed relief and joy at theresult. “I was very proud of them. I thought we were going tothrow it away but they all worked really hard at the end to get thewin,” she said. After two games Holly Twomey now has 7 goalsand the captain said the win will galvanise the team. “A winalways gives a team confidence and this is a great boost for us,”she said. A great performance then but still lots to do for the youngside. Holly Twomey takes the plaudits for her second hat-trick ofthe campaign but every player ran their hearts out for this welldeserved if slightly nervous victory.

SavageTreasured Memories of my lovely Dad,

Paddy Savage, of Park Youghal.

An empty bed where once you lay,

You had no choice, you could not stay.

An empty chair - you'd quietly rest,

God had great taste, he took the best.

An empty house, our heavy hearts,

They say time heals, we've yet to start.

Father, Grandad and special friend,

Gentle and loving, 'til the bitter end.

Your hearty laugh, your hands so strong,

Your stories that went on and on.

Life goes on or so they say,

Dad we love and remember you each day.

Love you lots Dad, your daughter Margaret, Brendan & grand-children David, Laura, Anthony, Noreen, Declan & Ellie.

In Loving Memory of my Dad

I miss the way you held my hand and tell me things would be alright.

I miss your smile, your unconditional love,

My life has not been the same since you went away from us,

But I know you are free from pain and with mam together again.

Light a special candle Lord, Hold my Dad real tight,Tell him I love and miss him every morning, noon and night.

Loved and ever missed your loving daughter Monica & John.

Lord hug our grandad real tight, tell him we miss him every day and

night. So rest in peace dear grandad and thanks for all you've done.

Four kisses blown to the sky so blue, catch them grandad

cause they are just for you.

Love always Melissa, Aoife, Séan and Katie.

You made the world a better place, in your own special way,And you're still loved so very much, and missed more every day.

Blackwater Challenge CupAfter five rounds in the Blackwater Challenge Cup it was Youghaland Fermoy that qualified for the final. Youghal had done betterin the rounds so we gained the home advantage. All the stops werepulled in the two weeks leading up to the final as the Club wentthrough some major renovation work. The alley was painted, aglass wall in the upstairs gallery was installed. We renovated andre-floored the upstairs gallery. Showers were ripped out andreplaced with a more efficient system. Toilets wererepaired/replaced as well as many other improvements. This wasall done with the assistance of the club members and we would liketo seriously them for putting in many unsociable hours to get thisdone. But I think all will agree that the effort was worth it as thealley is looking great! The downside of all this renovation work was that the six teamplayers did not get much game time to practice for the final.Needless to say, when the alley re-opened a few days before thefinal, there was a rush of activity to get some practice in. The finalwas held on Friday, September 11th and a large crowd had gath-ered early on for this eagerly anticipated final. Club membersagain pulled through and came up with trays of sandwiches, fruitand biscuits for all to enjoy while watching the games. First up on the night was Dwaine O’Shea against Kalin Kelly.Dwaine played well and took an easy 2-0 win. Next up were num-ber 1 seeds, Keith Gallogley and Dwaine Magner. After a crackerof a match it was Dwaine that came though to win on a 2-1 score.Third game of the night was the doubles match where OlanMcCarthy and Jody Cooper faced the Fermoy duo of DavidCallanan and Shane McLoughlin. After a cracking game of dou-bles, again it was Youghal that came through on a 2-0 scoreline. The fourth match of the night saw Wayne Fitzgerald up againstJohnny O’Keeney. Unfortunately for Youghal it was Johnny thatcame through on a 2-0 scoreline. Both clubs were tied on twomatches each and it was down to the last game of the night todecide who would keep the silverware for the year.So to decide the competition we had Barry Goggin up againstChris Carey. Chris started very strong and took the first gamefrom Barry. But Barry was confident and was hungry to keep hiswinning streak from last season going. Chris was not expectingthis and Barry took the second game comfortably. The gallerywere roaring as the entire competition was now going down to asingle game to 11. It all seemed to be going over Barry’s head ashe was as cool as a breeze and taking in all the excitement. Onecould not say the same about Chris though and this was surprisingconsidering that this is a player that represented Ireland at juniorlevel and is a highly ranked player on the Irish circuit. No botherfor Barry though and he stormed through to take the tie-breakergame on an 11-1 score giving a final tally of Youghal 3-2 Fermoy. This was a great achievement for the Youghal club and this wasacknowledged by the Fermoy and Touraneena players. All theclubs involved were very happy with how the competition playedout and we are already planning on next season.Seeded Doubled Competition. The first round of the seeded doubles competition kicked off onWednesday, September 16th. After a good night of Racquetballthe teams of Olan McCarthy & Keith Walsh, Jody Cooper & TomBuckley, Dwaine O’Shea & Killian McCarthy that took a roundone exit. The quarter finals were held the following week,September 23rd. The teams that lost out in this round were ColinKennedy & Kevin Landers, Ian Ryan & John Kenefick, SteveO’Shea & Brian Fitzgerald, MJ Curley & Brian Coakley. The fourquarter final games took almost four hours to complete and threeof the four went to tie-breaker games. Again a very enjoyablenight. This sets us up for the semi-finals on Wednesday,September 30th. We will have Keith Gallogley & SiobhánDowning up against Barry Goggin & Ian Ryan, the second semi-final will see Jason Browne & John O’Callaghan up against WayneFitzgerald & Simon Primm. Games will start at 7.30pm and I amsure we are in for another entertaining night of Racquetball.

Anyone interested is invited to come up and watch.Winter LeagueEntry form for the Winter League is posted in the alley and wealready have a strong entry of 23 players. Anyone interestedshould add their name to the list ASAP.Club LadderThere are about 15 players actively playing in the local ladder andthere are many weekly battles for ranking positions. Top of theladder for the past few MONTHS is Keith Gallogley as nobodycan seem to shake this guy. Behind him are Barry Goggin, DwaineO’Shea, Ian Cronin & Andrew Gallogley.AGM; The annual general meeting of the Club has been fixed forWednesday, October 14th at 8.00pm. A nomination board is post-ed in the alley for those wishing to run for committee positions.Membership; Membership is now due. Rates are E35 adult, E15student and E5 for juveniles. HEAT YOUR HOME FOR LESS

Although here in Ireland our climate is usually fairly mild, thewind and dampness cause a high level of heat loss from ourbuildings. An uninsulated building is an enormous drain onheat, and the heating bills paid on it are essentially moneydown the drain.

Insulation is something which any homeowner cannot afford toignore. Whether your motivations are saving the planet, or sim-ply saving your pocket, there are many important benefits ofhome insulation including reduced heating bills and reducedcarbon emissions.

Two of the main types of home insulation are attic insulationand bonded bead cavity wall insulation. The latter is a processwhereby the cavity space between a building's inner and outerwalls are filled with polystyrene beads, which are injected intothe cavity via small holes.

The Irish Government recently introduced a grant schemetowards home insulation which can cover approximately 50%of the cost of insulating your home (depending on size).Announcing the scheme, the Minister for Communications,Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan explained that thenew measures could lead to heating bill reductions of about€700 per annum for individual households. The applicationprocess is straightforward and the scheme is open to all housesbuilt before 2006. See www.sei.ie for further details or contactyour local grant approved insulation provider, ECOWISEINSULATION directly on 024 20714.
