Fountain Valley Plant named best wastewatertreatment plant in the State

The Orange County Sanitation District'sFountain Valley water reclamation plantreceived the prestigious statewide CaliforniaWater Environment Association "Plant of theYear" award for 2010 in the large plantcategory.

The award, conferred April 15 at the CWEAAnnual Conference in Ontario, recognizes theDistrict's facility for permit compliance,innovative practices, cost effectiveness, and

superior plant operations. The District prevailedover other regional award winning facilities fromthroughout California that treat more thantwenty millions gallons of wastewater per day.

Peterpicks a problem"There is an old saying, "Necessity is the mother of invention."That's exactly what happened in my case."

Peter Cheffs saw a problem. TheCollection Facilities O&M staff performsline cleaning and other maintenancework in the sewer lines of OCSD'sservice area. Trucks, equipped with anarrow board and illuminated withincandescent light bulbs, warnoncoming traffic that employees are

performing work in the street.

The power to light the arrow boardbulbs is supplied by the alternator of arunning engine. In a normal day, thetruck engine runs for eight hours to

supply power to the arrow board. The arrow board can only be moved90 degrees; so, at times, a second truck is necessary to provideprotective services when the working truck is turned so the arrowboard faces oncoming traffic. Peter thought of a way to cut costs andprotect the environment.

Leyla lays down the law"We insist that our contractors strive to be good neighbors, andbuild relationships with the local community."Senior Environmental Specialist Leyla Perezis our biosolids inspector. She inspects andtrains the truck drivers on our requirementsand serves as the liaison between theoperators and contractors.

She audits the preventive maintenanceprograms required for all contractors andensures they meet those standards. Leylaconducts periodic safety checks and one-on-one training of drivers in both English andSpanish to help ensure our biosolids safelyreach their final destination.We insist that our contractors minimize theodor and reduce the impacts on neighborsnear our sites. It is critical that our contractors

When you look at Ernie Castro's picture, youcan see clearly the kind of person he is - eager,encouraging, positive - a motivator. When youtalk to him, his positive attitude and enthusiasmooze out. His pride in what he does and howhe does it, flashes enthusiastically across hisface.

Ernie is the type of person you are alwayshappy to see, he makes your day, and makesyou just a little bit prouder to do your job.

We need more Ernies. He received theCalifornia Water Environment Santa Ana RiverBasin Operator of the Year Award at theirannual awards ceremony in February 2010. Hewas nominated by supervisor Ken Wong for his
