Dear Traveler,

Far from being just another travel agency, Oceanic Society is America’s first non-profit dedicated to ocean conservation. Travel is how we pursue our mission. Since our founding in 1969, we have strived to build a more oceanic society by immersing our travelers in nature and helping them to embrace, understand, and become personally engaged in conservation.

The last year has been a good one for ocean conservation. In 2016, President Obama expanded Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument making it the world’s largest marine protected area. Oceanic Society has been involved in conservation and ecotourism development there since 1997 through the many volunteer and nature travel programs we’ve led to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, and we see this great accomplishment as a sign that our work is making a difference.

Thank you for helping us conserve ocean wildlife and habitats by choosing Oceanic Society for your next transformative expedition in nature.

our travel philosophy

Oceanic Society’s mission is to conserve marine wildlife and habitats by deepening the connections between people and nature. We strive to facilitate meaningful, life-changing experiences for our travelers—ones that will inspire them to become more intimately involved in conservation long after the expedition is over.

On the ground in the places we visit, our expeditions support conservation, research, and community development efforts that serve to underpin long-term sustainable relationships between people and the oceans.

By participating in an Oceanic Society expedition, you are more than just another traveler. You are an active participant in our global effort to build a healthy future for the oceans.

Authentic

Educational

As a non-profit conservation organization with decades of global experience, our extensive network of staff and conservation partners gives us access to special insights and opportunities that are not available through other travel operators. Our trips are guided by working field biologists, naturalists, and conservationists who are knowledgeable and passionate, and we partner with local residents to enrich their lives as well as yours.

As lifelong students of nature, we believe that appreciation of the natural world is enhanced through knowledge. Our trip leaders are trained to interpret nature in engaging ways and to provide information that enhances your experience by explaining the science behind the species and habitats you will observe. We also team up with local experts whenever possible to give you opportunities to learn from the latest field research.

Life-changing

Impactful

We aim to do more than take you on an amazing trip. We want your travel experience to positively impact your life and inspire you to become an active participant in building a healthy future for the oceans. We select, design, and lead our expeditions around this bold idea, and empower our travelers with the tools and knowledge they need to become part of the growing “oceanic society.”

Travelers with Oceanic Society can rest assured that their travel dollars are well spent. We take great care to partner with travel operators, non-profit organizations, and individuals who share our commitment to preserving the natural world and supporting local community well-being. Moreover, your program fees help support Oceanic Society’s global research, conservation, and outreach programs.

Established in 1969, Oceanic Society is America’s oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. Throughout our history we have seen how conscientious nature travel can drive conservation and connect people to nature in meaningful ways. Our Expeditions programs have been a core component of how we pursue our mission for more than 40 years.

Each of our expeditions is designed with the intention to positively impact the natural areas and human communities we visit while also delivering transformative nature experiences for our travelers that deepen their connections to nature and promote the adoption of ocean-friendly “blue habits.” Moreover, any profits we earn are invested directly into our ocean research and conservation programs worldwide. Here’s how it works.

OUR Conservation IMPACT in FY16From July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016 Oceanic Society operated 39 conservation travel programs for 280 travelers across 14 countries. Through those programs we contributed $164,787 to ocean research and conservation efforts by our partners in the Caribbean, Coral Triangle, Florida, Galápagos Islands, Kenya, Mexico, Micronesia, and Senegal, and provided a total of 3,334 hours of volunteer time. Our contributions supported programs that study and protect manatees, sea turtles, coral reefs, dolphins, whales, and other marine species.

An additional $271,057 in profits generated through our expeditions and San Francisco Bay Area whale watching programs were reinvested into Oceanic Society’s global marine research and conservation programs, including our Belize field station, the State of the World’s Sea Turtles Program, our Blue Habits initiative, and the administration of our fiscally-sponsored projects. Total dollar contributions to research and conservation were $435,844.

IMPACT Example: SOLOMON ISLANDS BY LIVEABOARD

An Oceanic Society expedition to the Solomon Islands in April 2016 brought 18 travelers to explore this remote corner of the Coral Triangle. Taking advantage of our ship’s passage through this understudied region, we invited researcher Benjamin Kahn aboard to survey for marine mammals from our ship. Benjamin was able to log 21.3 search hours covering 407 kilometers, sighting 6 cetacean species during 14 encounters. This was the first cetacean survey in the Solomon Islands since 2004, and the results were immediately shared with local government authorities.

IMPACT Example: Belize Bottlenose Dolphin Research

Over the past 20 years, hundreds of students, volunteers, and vacationers have joined our researchers studying bottlenose dolphins in Belize. Each trip funds time on the water, generates valuable data, and subsidizes the operations of our field station in Turneffe Atoll, totaling several hundred thousand dollars to-date. The research done through our programs contributed to the establishment of Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve in 2012, and our visitors’ presence demonstrated the significant economic value of a healthy marine environment to the government of Belize.

Located in Indonesia’s West Papua Province, the Raja Ampat Archipelago is at the heart of the most biodiverse marine region on Earth—the Coral Triangle. Largely unexplored by scientists until recently, new marine species are being discovered here on a regular basis. Reefs in Raja Ampat are not only the world’s most biodiverse, but they are also some of the most pristine.

Our trip takes you on an exploration of this remote archipelago aboard a 112-foot motored schooner. Selecting ideal snorkeling sites daily, we will immerse ourselves in diverse and unique marine habitats and explore multiple islands. Morning excursions will provide opportunities to see the equally diverse bird life, including the magnificent Red Bird of Paradise, Kingfishers, and Sea Eagles.

The State of the World’s Sea Turtles

Sea turtles have survived on Earth for more than 100 million years, yet today their future hangs in the balance. Six of the seven sea turtle

species are threatened with extinction due to human impacts.

Oceanic Society is proud to lead the State of the World’s Sea Turtles (SWOT) Program, an ambitious effort to coordinate, empower, and support sea turtle conservation efforts worldwide. Unlike most sea turtle conservation projects, which focus at the local or regional scale, the SWOT Program works globally by bringing hundreds of individuals and institutions together to monitor sea turtles’ status, distribution, and threats, and to develop and share tools that strengthen conservation efforts.

Together, over the past 12+ years, we have created the first comprehensive, up to date, and publicly-available global database of sea turtle biogeography. The SWOT database has helped to advance sea turtle research and conservation in many ways—it has been used to define sea turtle populations worldwide for the first time, to set global priorities for sea turtle conservation, to evaluate impacts to sea turtles from climate change and fisheries, and much more.

Each year since 2005, we have published the State of the World ’s Sea Turtles (SWOT) Report—an award-winning magazine that combines current science with practical information from our global

network into a usable outreach tool. Now in its twelfth volume, SWOT Report is produced by and for the sea turtle community and has become a trusted tool for conservation projects worldwide.

We also provide direct financial support to high priority sea turtle research and conservation projects worldwide. To-date, the annual SWOT Grants program has awarded 65 small grants to 56 projects impacting more than 45 countries.

To learn more about sea turtles, and to find out how you can contribute to the SWOT Program, please visit http://seaturtlestatus.org.

Nicaragua has been gaining international acclaim as an “undiscovered” natural and cultural destination in recent years, and this trip will show you why. Our itinerary takes you along the Pacific coast from Juan Venado Nature Reserve and Padre Ramos Estuary in the north to San Juan del Sur and La Flor Wildlife Refuge in the south. These areas provide important habitat for four sea turtle species, and our trip is timed to coincide with the peak nesting of hawksbills and olive ridleys. We’ll have the chance to see both nesting adults and hatching babies, and with luck may see the mass nesting “arribada” of olive ridley turtles.

We’ll also visit the colonial towns of Granada and Leon, enjoy a swim or paddle in a geothermal lake, and visit the smoldering Masaya volcano on our adventure.

Baja California’s San Ignacio Lagoon is the primary calving ground for eastern Pacific gray whales and part of Mexico’s El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve—the largest wildlife refuge in Latin America. The large concentration of gray whales that reside here each winter are extremely ‘friendly,’ and regularly approach our small whale watching pangas in a moving display that occurs nowhere else. The whales are the focus of our trip, and we will have three full days to observe them.

At the start of our program we will also spend two days exploring the Sea of Cortez, one of the most productive seas on the planet. From the quaint town of Loreto we will make private boat excursions to search for marine mammals, to snorkel, and to enjoy the outstanding landscapes of the Gulf of California.

Join marine biologist Dr. Dení Ramírez for this one-of-a-kind expedition to look for and collect data on whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez. These gentle giants visit the Bay of La Paz to feed on plankton and then migrate to deeper waters around Espíritu Santo Island to give birth. Bring the whole family to swim, hike, kayak, snorkel, dive, and investigate nature in between whale shark sightings. Like many shark species, these animals are threatened with extinction, and Dení’s research contributes to the knowledge base needed to save them.

Our ship is a 45-foot catamaran with four double bed cabins, each with private baths and air conditioning. The boat is equipped with swim steps for easy water access, as well as kayaks and dive equipment upon request.

In a collaborative program with Belizean agencies, Oceanic Society has been monitoring the long-term health of coral reefs around Turneffe Atoll via scuba. Specifically, we monitor the presence/absence and the age- and size-classes of indicator species as well as algal cover on the reefs, and we gather baseline data on species composition.

Volunteers in this program assist the researcher in daily scuba dives to collect data using non-destructive sampling techniques. Divers will receive on-site training in sampling methods and will learn to identify local fish and invertebrates. Participants must be scuba certified and be generally competent in buoyancy control, but no other certifications or skills are required.

Coral reefs are the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the oceans, and yet they are also among the most threatened. Shark populations are also in decline globally, and scientists have begun to explore the connections between shark abundance and coral reef health. Recent findings suggest that the healthiest reefs are those with the most sharks, but more work is needed to understand the linkages between shark abundance and reef health.

As a citizen scientist on this scuba diving or snorkeling program you will learn to identify and survey sharks, corals, and reef fish in order to compare reef health in areas of varying shark abundance. Your work will be a part of ongoing efforts to document shark populations in Palau. A wonderful way to explore Palau!
