Ocean TidesMs. WalkerReview on Waveshttp://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/0078600499/161383/00053404.htmlHow do these relate to tides?A&D Statements1. A tide is the point at which waves break on shore. 2. Tides are caused by surface currents and wind. 3. The moons gravity causes oceans to bulge outwards. 4. Where the ocean bulges the most, there is a rip tide. 5. Earths orbit around the moon causes daily tide changes. 6.Everyday at the Jacksonville Pier, there are two low tides and two high tides. IV. Tides

A) Tide the daily rise and fall of water level1) Caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the oceans2) One low-tide-high-tide cycle is about 12 hours and 25 minutes3) High tide is the highest level that the ocean reaches on shore4) Low tide is the lowest level that the ocean reaches on shore

B) Effect of the Moon1) The moon pulls the oceans toward itself causing a bulge on the side closest to the moon2) The moon also pulls the earth toward itself causing a bulge on the side away from the moon

C) Effect of the Sun 1) Spring Tide tides caused when the sun and moon are lined up with the earth (full and new moon)a) high tides are higher and low tides are lower2) Neap Tide tides caused when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other (first and third quarter)a) high tides are lower and low tides are higher

Rip Tides

A&D Statement [Answers]A tide is the point at which waves break on shore. [Disagree, it is the rise and fall of ocean water levels.]

Tides are caused by surface currents and wind. [Disagree, caused by the moon.]

The moons gravity causes oceans to bulge outwards. [Agree.]Where the ocean bulges the most, there is a rip tide. [Disagree, high tide.]

Earths orbit around the moon causes daily tide changes. [Disagree, the Moons orbit around the Earth.]

Everyday at the Jacksonville Pier, there are two low tides and two high tides. [Agree.]
