Ocean Pollution
By: Chloe, Max, Sophia, & Briana
What is ocean pollution?Ocean pollution is trash that can harm animals and nature. It is very bad for the environment. People don’t pay attention to this problem
because it’s a very BIG problem that will take a lot of time and money to fix. But, we can change this. It just might take a long time. Every piece of trash counts when it gets thrown on the ground.Sometimes it seems like people just don’t care. But the people who are doing this presentation,
do care! We all need to work together and stop ocean pollution!
Every day tons of trash and other pollutants enter the ocean. This is called ocean pollution, the same thing as marine pollution. Marine pollution is a growing problem. There is enough plastic in the ocean to circle the Earth 400 times. The two main types of pollution are chemicals and trash. On the ocean some of the debris is left on the beach and some of it gets into animals’ mouths. The animals think it’s food when the stuff that they ate is actually plastic. Ocean pollution is worse than you think! It can endanger both sea creatures and humans. A lot of fish get trapped in it, get diseases and get injuries. The ocean provides 70% of oxygen we breathe and is over 97% of the world’s water supply. Humans can get serious and big health problems if they stay near ocean pollution. It’s very important to save the oceans.

Information
Who is causing the problem?
How does plastic get into the ocean? The bottom line is us. Whether we mean to litter or not, there's always a chance the plastic we throw
away could make it into the sea, and from there who knows? Big changes start with small steps and we all have the power to make a difference. What will you do to start cutting the plastic in your life?We need people who care and people who will not back down. It takes
a team effort to fix this. We have to work together!
So, who’s in to help the earth?
Cause & effectThe cause of this situation is that people are not caring about our earth and the pollution, only about making money and convenient life.
The effects are: ● The marine animals die● Human resources go down ● Microplastic come in our food chain● Health problems for humans such as cancer
And who knows how many more bad things that scientist have still not discovered!
Causes of Ocean PollutionThere are many causes of ocean pollution. Some of them are:
- sewage, - toxic chemicals from industries and people,- land runoff, - large scale oil spills, - ocean mining,- Littering,- And let’s not forget all the plastic we throw away every day.
The sunscreen is bad for the ocean because it hurts corals. Carbon dioxide is bad for the oceans because it reacts with sea water to form carbonic acid. Noise is bad for the oceans because it causes marine animals to leave their homes.
Plastic Pollution Plastic is one of the biggest causes of ocean pollution. About 90% of plastic that ends up in the ocean is because we caused it:
- If you put plastic in trash bins instead or recycle. While trash is being transported it can fly away because it is so light. From there it will clutter around drains and end up in rivers and eventually in the ocean.
- Littering. Rainwater and wind carries plastic waste into streams and rivers, and through drains. Drains lead to the ocean!
- Microfibers and Microbeads. Many of the products we use daily are flushed down toilets, including wet wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products. Microfibers are even released into waterways when we wash our clothes in the washing machine. They are too small to be filtered out by waste water plants and end up being consumed by small marine species, eventually even ending up in our food chain.
Plastic Pollution Cont...Once plastic gets into water it decomposes very slowly and it eventually breaks down into microplastic that damages sea life. This microsplastic is too small to be filtered out by waste water plants and ends up being consumed by small marine species, eventually even ending up in our food chain.
Not too many people read or understand microplastic and how they are used in many of our products. In 2015 the scientists calculated that 8 trillion microbeads pollute U.S. aquatic habitats daily.

Here is a sea turtle who has been hurt by plastic lines and is trying to chew on the plastic bag which will cause her harm.
How would you feel if your baby was eating plastic?
Next time you eat some fish, ask yourself: “How much plastic am I eating?”
Great Pacific Garbage PatchDid you know we have a trash vortex from marine debris floating in our Pacific ocean? It spans from West Coast of North America to Japan.
●It is roughly three times the size of France ●Once plastic enters the patch, it is unlikely to ever escape●The Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains between 1.1 to 3.6 trillion
pieces of plastic● Plastic will account for roughly 74% of the diet of sea turtles that
enter the area

Oil SpillsOil spills are another big cause of ocean pollution. Oil spills happen in rivers, oceans, seas and lakes. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 1.3 million gallons (4.9 million liters) of petroleum are spilled into U.S. waters from vessels and pipelines in a typical year. The main causes of oil spills are:
● Natural seeps of oils● accidents, ● people making mistakes or being careless, ● equipment breaking down, ● natural disasters such as hurricanes and high winds, and ● deliberate acts by terrorists, acts of war and vandals or illegal dumping.
Oil spills can be very harmful. Oil spills affect marine life and sea birds. When a bird cleans its feathers and the feathers have oil in them, the bird can get sick and die. Also, sea birds can get poisoned by eating fish that swam into the oil spill and got covered in oil. Also when marine animals get into oil, their fur loses their ability to repel water.
168,000 gallons (635,000 liters) of oil that leaked into Galveston Bay, Texas, US in 2014
Everyone probably knows what the problem is. Right?
Well, the problem is that people are polluting our earth and not thinking about it .When they do these things animals die and became extinct!
The solution is the part where we need your ideas! Everyone can make a difference. We can all help
with this problem; start recycling and finding cleaner sources for energy!
Problem & Solution
●Reduce your use of single-use plastics. They are: plastic bags, water bottles, straws, cups, utensils and dry cleaning bags. Don’t use single-use plastics, use reusable bags, cups, straws, and bottles.
●Recycle! Just 9% of plastic is recycled worldwide. Recycling plastic keeps it away from the ocean. Recycling means it will get reused by making new things out of it.
●Stop buying products that use microplastic such as: wet wipes, soaps, toothpastes, body washes and more.

Many solutions to Pollution
Have you bought one of these yet? No?
Please get one and carry it with you so you say STOP to plastic straws.
Straws
Did you know that your Outdoor gear, leggings, fleeces and jumpers made from acrylic and polyester, polyamide, spandex and nylon shed up to 700,000 microfibres with each wash?
Please consider a different material!
Clothes
Laundry and dishwasher pods/tablets and all kinds of detergents and disinfectants with scrubbing agents have microplastics. These are the same beads banned in cosmetics but not in our detergents.
Please consider using natural material such as ground coconut shell!
Laundry & dishwashers
Cigarettes have a filter at the end of it. This filter is made of non-biodegradable plastic which sheds microfibers. Cigarette butts are the most commonly recovered item in beach cleanups.
Please stop smoking - double benefit your health and our ocean!
Glitter - I know, I love it too. However, this fun item is made from chemicals that change into microplastic.
Please consider using biodegradable glitter!
Tea Bags - WHAT?? I would have never thought! They are not entirely biodegradable, as they contain a polypropylene “skeleton”. That skeleton then breaks into tiny pieces when the paper breaks down in the compost or soil.
Please consider using loose-leaf tea!
Takeaway containers, cans and other plastic container are bringing chemicals to our food.
Please consider buying free of any sort of packaging and bring your own containers for carry out!
What we can do!We can inform you on how to help the earth and clean the oceans! The first step is to get a recycling bin. Then, you can sort out the waste, and the things that you can recycle. Some
examples of recycled pieces are: plastic, paper, cardboard and others you have at your house that you think can get reused. Lastly, get the bin with recycles in it and take it to a
recycling house. They will know what to do with it. And don’t forget:
“Rethink what products you buy next time!”
These simple steps can lead us to clean oceans but you might want to do it with a friend or someone you love. This will pick up the speed to a clean, beautiful, or just clean!

About the Author “Briana”Hi!! My name is Briana Caushi! I go to Amerman Elementary school and I am in 3rd grade ALPS. I am 9 years old and I live with my dad, mom, brother and my puppy Nova. I chose to write about this topic (Ocean Pollution) because I realized that without water there is no life. One day, while drinking a gatorade after soccer practice, I thought to myself “where would this bottle go now?” I decided that I needed to make a change in my life and try to change other people’s perspective to ocean pollution.

Hi! my name is Max Shamus. I am in 3rd grade ALPS and I am 9 years old. I chose this topic because it is a very strong topic to me. Because if there is one thing I like a lot and care for a lot it is: animals. So I say that every time we go to a beach I strongly encourage you all to help our earth grow to live a strong and healthy life, to try to not be the cause of pollution, and to use metal straws more often so we can have a better earth!!!Hi! my name is Max Shamus. Hi my name is Chloe, and I am 9 years old. I go to Ammerman elementary school but my home schools is
Winchester Elementary. I had two dogs named : Dewey and Porter. Sadly, Porter died few years ago. I live with my
parents and my sister who is one year younger than me. I love to spend time with my friends and practice my favorite hobby,
which is gymnastics. The craziest thing right now is that we are going thru a Pandemic. It happens once a century and we are
experiencing it. I miss my friends because we are stuck at home.Thank you for listening!
