As a local Champion you are recognised as an active member of your community. We hope that the satisfaction and fulfilment that comes from helping and serving others will make a big difference to you. The programme will reward you for your volunteer service but the biggest reward is knowing that you have made a difference.

One Community will partner with you to create opportunities for Local Champions to positively impact the community of Tilbury and Chadwell St. Mary.

You will be able to learn new things, increase your skills, work together as a team on local projects and share the knowledge and gifts that you already have.

Everything you do will be recorded and rewarded!

Active LearningIt’s never too late to learn something you’ve always

wanted to or improve a skill you already have.

There are numerous courses available, a selection are listed below. If you wish to enrol on any of these, find out more

about them or enquire about any others, please contact the Programme Co-ordinator

Move up Literacy:

- Become a better reader, writer and speller - Gain confidence with your abilities - Have the opportunity to achieve a

qualification at City & Guilds entry level.

Secretary Skills:

- For those who are the Secretary of a Group or

considering becoming one - How to write an agenda - Taking and writing minutes - Meeting skills etc.

Move up Numeracy:

- Improve your understanding of numeracy issues- Study everyday money skills, standing orders, interest rates, on-line banking etc. - Skills developed can be used to manage finance whilst working towards a numeracy qualification

Advocacy : Helping others in the community

- Learning ways to support local people- Discovering new communication skill- Identifying local issues- Working with local service providers- Identify current advocacy issues and dilemmas- Understanding policies and procedures

Active Learning

Active LearningWork/Life Balance:

- Know what is meant by the term “work/life balance”- Consider your own position

regarding current work/life balance - Look at a number of tools that can help

with work/life balance - Be aware of some of the legislation around

work/life balance

Positive parents:

- A fun and interesting introduction to child behaviour and parenting skills

- Be introduced to learning through play- Safety in the home

- Explore aspects of child development - Opportunity to progress onto

family Learning courses

Personal Development :

- Develop personally by increasing your confidence and self-esteem- Develop assertiveness and communication skills- Learn how to manage stress

British Sign Language:

- Learn a wide range of vocabulary and basic grammatical principles- Learn about the richness of the deaf culture and community

Foreign Languages:

- Develop foreign language skills- Build confidence in conversation

Active Learning

Active LearningEveryday Literacy on Computers

- Improve literacy for Adults with Learning Difficulties- Learn how to use computer

- Create own documents, save and print them- Small friendly group with individual help where needed

Crafts for Adults with Learning Disabilities:

- Mixed craft course in which learners will be shown how to make individual craft items

they can take home

Group learning session:

- Developing a team- Understand what a team is and what qualities

good teams possess - Look at your team and consider

its strengths and weaknesses

Improve your writing skills:

- Learn how to write letters, emails or reports on behalf of your organisation- Learn how to use appropriate punctuation- Gain confidence in your writing ability- Look at writing skills needed to produce formal and informal documents

Level 2 Award in Food safety:

- In Catering: RSPH accredited course which covers basic principles of food hygiene

Active Service

Volunteers in the community already make a massive difference, working with all kinds of people in different ways.

There are also occasions when citizens can get involved in one-off projects. This programme seeks to create those

opportunities and get Local Champions “out there”.Here are some examples of ways that we can serve:

As a Local Champion you will work with others on the programme on projects which you really care about, maybe to tackle a local issue such as :

Creating a skate park for the youth in Tilbury and Chadwell St. MaryRunning a youth clubOrganising lunches for the elderlyCampaigning/fund raising eventsOrganising community events/fetesOrganising petitionsHelping reduce povertyProtecting the environmentProviding care for animals

Active SharingEveryone has skills and knowledge they can share with others.

In doing so individuals can be taught by someone familiar and community in general is strengthened.
