EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
It is important to recognise that this Survey can only be effective if the recommendations in this
report are implemented in conjunction with your integrated management system. Without
proper management the implementation recommendations will not succeed.
The inhalation of Hazardous Chemical Substances (HCS) can cause serious diseases. These
diseases usually become apparent only some years after exposure to HCS and sometimes not
until 40 or more years after the first exposure.
Diseases may result from:
Inhalation: HCS can be breathed in. Inhalation is the most common source of exposure to
HCS.
The exposure to noise levels in excess of 85dB(A) can cause noise induced hearing loss. These
diseases usually become apparent only some years after exposure to noise
Noise induced hearing loss may result from:
Continuous or intermitted exposure to noise levels in excess of 85dB(A).
Ventilation:
Poor or unventilated areas may lead to employees experiencing over exposure to gases.
Ergonomics:
Ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions
among humans and other elements of a system, and other elements of a system, and the
profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimise
human wellbeing and overall systems performance .ergonomists contribute to the design
and evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems in order to make them
compatible with the needs, abilities limitations of people
The approach of ergonomics is to optimise the user –interface, the work organisation and the
environment to achieve optimum human machine integration. Ergonomics is classified into 3
main domains:
Physical
Organisational
Cognitive
The need for ergonomics is clear, injuries rates are on the increase, especially for ergonomic –
related injuries, despite the increase in technology that is designed to help reduce the rates of
injuries

6. GENERAL CONCERN INFORMATION
6.1 Locality.
The concern is situated in 20 Phoenix North Road, Springs in the Gauteng Province.
6.2 Concern activities
The concern is a reconditioning and manufacturing of drums site and is administrated
under the Occupational Health & Safety Act 85 of 1993.

Survey was done taking into account the Regulations promulgated under the
Occupational Health and Safety, No. Act 85 of 1993 (as amended).

8. STRATEGY PROFILE
8.1 Measuring Procedure – Airborne Pollutants
- Personal gravimetric samples were taken with the sampling trains running
continuously during the course of the normal working shift.
- The pumps were calibrated, with the sampling heads in line, at 2.0 liters per minute
using an electronic calibrator (absolute volume displacement method). A calibration
authority calibrates the calibrator annually.
- At the end of each sampling shift the volume flow of each sampling train was
checked, using the same method as for setting the flow rate prior to sampling. Only
samples from sampling trains, which had a volume flow rate within the acceptable
margin of ± 5 % of the calibrated, flow rate, were included in the assessment;
- The mass of the filters was determined prior to sampling. After sampling the mass of
the filters and the collected airborne particulate had been ascertained and the time-
weighted-average (TWA) concentration in milligrams per cubic meter calculated;
- The weighing of filters was in accordance with international accepted norms;
- Samples were transported in a carrying case similar to a vanity case with the handle
on top of the lid and fully lined with low-density foam rubber. The case is clearly
marked “Handle with Care” and “This Side Up”. The case is designed to prevent
inadvertent opening whilst being handled or when in transit;
8.2 Measuring Procedure – Noise.
Noise zones
- Suspected noise risk areas were scanned and noise zones established;
- The sound pressure levels (LAr,T) were measured by scanning each zone. Where
impulse noise was present the instrument was set to accommodate impulses;
- Salient noise sources were measured individually at a distance of 2 m away with the
microphone pointing towards the source;
SANS Code 10083 was followed as a general strategy guide.
- Where noisy equipment is not used continuously, measurements were taken when the
equipment was operational and when the equipment was not operational;
- Time interval noise intensities were observed to be accommodated in calculations of
personal exposure levels, if not substantiated by personal dosimeter readings

8.3 Illumination
- The one-meter grid method recommended in SANS code 10114: Part one - 2005 was
adopted as the general guide;
- Faulty and/or dirty illuminants were observed;
- Obvious dark spots were observed and illumination levels measured;
- Stroboscopic effects and illuminants with glare were observed
8.4 Measuring Procedure – Ventilation
- Offices were assessed against the requirements of the National Building Regulations;
- Fresh air supply and conditioning of air were assessed as required under SANS 10400:
2008.
9. MEASURING EQUIPMENT
9.1 Measuring Procedure – Airborne Particulate
- Intrinsically safe self-compensating gravimetric sampling pumps were used;
- 37mm Diameter G-x sampling cassettes (sampling heads) loaded with 37mm
diameter, 0.8 micrometer pore size Gelman GN-4 mix cellulose ester filters completed
the sampling trains;
- Weighing of filters was done on a five - decimal - point (g) analytical balance;
- A calibration authority calibrates the balance annually
9.2 Noise (SANS 10083:2013)
- A continuous integrating sound level meter capable of determining the equivalent A
- weighted sound pressure level (LAr, T) was used;
- The accuracy of the instrument complies with the requirements for a type one
classification as per IEC Publication 651;
- The instrument is capable of displaying the A - weighted sound pressure level
including the I-time weighting characteristic (impulses) when applicable;
- An acoustic source designed for use with the meter’s microphone and having a
single frequency sound output was used to calibrate the meter immediately prior to
use and to check the meter after being used;
- A calibration authority calibrates both the meter and the acoustic source annually

- An ordinary lux meter was used to measure the illumination levels. A calibration
authority calibrates the instrument used annually.

Some of the measured noise levels were above 82dB (A).
Recommendations:
All areas where the noise levels were above 82dB (A), should be demarcated as noise zones

Observations:
Measurements were taken where air-conditioners have been installed. Rooms without air-
conditioners were evaluated against the National Building Regulation.
Evaluation:
Only two rooms did not comply with the relevant standards.
Recommendations:
Rooms where the ration between windows and floors do not exceed 5%, should be fitted
with air-conditioners or additional windows.
