TOTAL CASES OF INJURIES WITH AND WITHOUT WORK DAYS LOST BY MAJOR INDUSTRY GROUP (MANUFACTURING)

The data shows the number of injuries that occurred during the years 2007, 2009 and 2011 for the Manufacturing Industry. For 2007, there were a total of 30,790 injuries, having 53 of which being fatal. Fatal means that death was caused by an industrial accident. On the other hand, in 2007, there were a total of 12, 373 non-fatal injuries. 115 of them being permanent incapacity and 12, 259 of them being temporary incapacity. Permanent Incapacity is a disability, which permanently incapacitates an employee from engaging in any occupation. Temporary Incapacity is a disability, which does not result to. It only causes absences for a fixed period of time.

In the graph it can be seen that 2007 had the most number of injuries that occurred. A more concise analysis would have been possible if only there were more data available. The survey used for this was only conducted every 2 years, as seen in the graph. There is no available data for the years 2008, 2010 and 2012 onwards. The survey used was gathered from The Occupation Injuries Survey (OIS). The agency responsible for this survey is the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

It is important that these events be avoided. Accidents and injuries may cost employers lost business opportunities, productivity losses, salary of the absent injured employee, reimbursed expenses due to injury, repair or replacement costs, insurance changes and legal costs and other additional training or supervisory costs. Employees, on the other hand, also have costs including loss of salary, loss of overtime payments, lost savings and pay differences from any employer.

To decrease the number of industrial injuries, the problem must be tackled systematically to create an awareness of health and safety in society and at work. This involves improving the sources of information and research into the causes of industrial accidents. It also involves increasing social awareness by demonstrating the advantages of accident prevention, increasing the training of workers, technicians and employers, monitoring and controlling strictly compliance with the labor regulations and evaluating the prevention measures that are adopted
