Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a Biodegradable material with rigidity and clarity similar to polystyrene (PS) or poly ethylene terephthalate (PET). Polylactic Acid is one of the best products in emerging Bioplastic market because of its availability and cost structure. Natural polymers, biopolymers, and synthetic polymers derived from renewable resources are the basis for the twenty-first century portfolio of sustainable, eco-efficient plastics these materials will replace the petroleum based polymer which are used for similar purpose. PLA mainly produced from renewable source like starch cellulose and carbohydrate which can easily obtain from different crop and vegetable. At large scale production, corn and sugarcane are used to synthesize the PLA. Governments of different countries have banned plastic bags in their regions. Many government have imposed restriction on free distribution of disposable carry bags and Government have also increased tax on these products. Governments have different policies for different regions and these can have a great impact on the usage pattern of the consumers, For instance, in Brazil, “Saco é um Saco” (‘Bag is bag”) is a campaign spearheaded by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment to decrease the consumption and disposal of plastic bags in the country. Aim of this campaign is to educate consumers about the environmental impacts caused by overuse and improper disposal of plastic bags. In the world, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags distributed annually. A plastic bag may seem harmless, but the collective environmental impact of those billions of little bags is huge. According to Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras), 12billion plastic bags are consumed annually in the country. Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) and Brazilian Ministry of Environment planning to launch second phase of this campaign in year 2014.The new campaign will draw attention to the shared responsibility envisaged in the National Policy on Solid Waste (PNRS). Carbion-PURAC, Natureworks, Tenjin and other companies have developed PLA which can withstand temperatures of 180°C and more. Increased heat resistance capacities of PLA make it suitable for Packaging and other application where higher temperature is required. This heat resistant bioplastic is ideal for catering business and serving of hot beverage. Catering industry consumes around one-fourth of the PLA produced. Lightweight PLA is preferred to make disposable tableware and other food packaging material. Bioplastics do not contain toxic compounds therefore Bioplastics are preferred in catering. Biodegradability of PLA driving its agricultural application, mulch film made from PLA is biodegradable which does not affect the fertility of soil. Technical applications include electronic appliances and automotive parts and PLA is used in manufacturing of technical materials. PLA is similar to plastics therefore many consumer goods can be made from PLA such as non-woven clothing materials, Diapers, Toys etc. Medical implants and 3D printing materials are also made from PLA. PLA is relatively new and emerging market.
