Our vice president, Hiba, talks to our guests about her experience as both member and board member of Phi Theta Kappa, explaining how much she has grown not only as a member, but also as a person. Before taking part of Phi Theta Kappa Hiba claims that she “was a shy girl who would avoid any sort of public speaking.” But now she is here, presenting the benefits of being part of Phi Theta Kappa. Go Hiba!

“The  mission  of  the  Orange  Coast  College  Honors  Program  is  to  create  a  growing  community  of  scholars  in  which  highly  motivated  students  and  faculty  engage  in  enriched  academic  experiences[…]”  

Right before the start of the new Fall ’12 semester, different honors organizations and societies got together to welcome the invited students of different backgrounds. This became the chance for the honors groups to share and explain what each have to offer along with forming alliances with other honor organizations. Speeches and testimonials were made during the gathering which included a wonderful lunch for our guests and volunteers. Both board members and volunteered members got the opportunity to introduce themselves to potential members, creating an inviting and friendly atmosphere.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” –Nelson Mandela.

As each year progresses, schools are starting to feel more of the state’s budget cuts in education, often leaving teachers buying classroom supplies from their own pockets. Phi Theta Kappa decided to change that this year, donating a whopping $2,500 worth of school supplies including crayons, paper, scissors, and so on. Gifts were rapped with bows and delivered to classrooms. Teachers and students had no idea, thinking Phi Theta Kappa was volunteering to simply help set up classrooms for the school year. The Adams Elementary staff members were touched by the donation as we felt greatly honored to help out a local elementary school.

Want to get to know about more clubs? Have no fear, club rush is here!

Clubs ranging from different objectives come together on this day to advertise and recruit as members as each can. Passing by students were welcomed to ask more about each club and decide if the club fit to their needs and interests. Many visited Phi Theta Kappa’s table, asking our friendly board members and volunteers what it had to offer and what requirements needed to be met before becoming a member. To make this event a little more casual and welcoming, students got the opportunity to do a ring toss for a Peace Tea drink.

 Right after introducing students to Phi Theta Kappa

from club rush, students were also invited to come and join us for our first chapter meeting hosted in the student lounge. Presentations further explained the available scholarships that were exclusively for PTK members. An Adams Elementary school representative also joined us, presenting Orange Coast College’s Phi Theta Kappa an outstanding service award for the volunteering and donations made to the elementary.

“It was a great learning experience, making friends and really connecting with others from different chapters.”

For the first time in Orange Coast College’s Phi Theta Kappa our Beta Mu Alpha Chapter attended a regional conference that was held in San Diego. Both board members and regular PTK members were invited to come experience this conference. At the conference, our members got the opportunity to attend workshops, further expanding on leadership skills, learning how to plan an event efficiently, and ideas for fundraising events. One of the topics that were discussed was the spirit of competition. Our Beta Mu Chapter mingled with other chapters, discussing and exchanging information about different ways of publicizing and recruiting members. After three days and two nights in San Diego, our chapter went home with expanded knowledge about not only growing as a club, but also as a team.

This  is  Sandy,  PTK  board  member,  and  her  Phi  Family!  Together,  they  work  as  a  team  to  win  a  game  of  charades.  

With so many members in the Beta Mu Chapter, we decided to host a family night in which each of our board members have assigned members to introduce and interact, creating that board to member relationship. Pictionary and charades were also played, giving each family a sense of competition and team work. Food and drinks were served as reenergizing boosts for everyone after a couple hours of interacting and playing games. Students who have never met became close to one another and friendships were made.

Aloha! Coast Day, a day when all the clubs

show off some school spirits. Games, food, prizes were played and handed out to the “pirates” that participated in the Hawaiian-themed event. Cheerleaders danced while clubs, including Phi Theta Kappa, sold homemade or bought goodies in hopes of fundraising some money. This was also a chance for clubs to further explain to passerby students what their club is about— talking about the requirements and benefits they had to offer. Clubs were competing amongst each other for the best Hawaiian- themed booth. Chapter meeting took place

right after. . To break the ice, each family had to dress up one family member with toilet paper, the best one wins!
