Movie ReviewS By Angela Dean THIS FILM is brilliantly directed by gifted filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur who hails from Iceland. The story is based on a true event from 1996 when two groups set out to climb Mt Everest. In the groups are a number of tourists with limited climbing experience. The New Zealand group, with the title Adventure Consultants, is led by the respected NZ climber Rob Hall (played by Jason Clarke) and the second group named Mountain Madness is led by charismatic, skilled and risk taking Scott Fischer (played Jake Gyllenhaal), an ‘up and at’em’ American working hard to establish him- self in the mountaineering business. Subsequently a book was written by Jon Krakauer titled Into Thin Air. It is a fabulous cast which includes Australian actor Sam Worthington. Michael Groom, who is a well known Australian climber, was a guide in this event for Rob Hall’s team. Groom is played by Thomas Wright. A Texan on the climb, Beck Weathers, is played by the much admired Josh Brolin who captures the superhuman bravery of the Texan. The scenes were stunning. This true event tells a lot about being human – the bravery of the ordinary tourists, the guides and leaders who believed it do-able all in the face of nature at its worst. It took me a few days to withdraw and get my feet on safe ground again. When I do I’m going to see it again. I’m giving it 4.5 stars. THE WALK is a film directed by Robert Zemeckis and tells the story of a true event from 1974. A young Frenchman, Philippe Petit born in 1948, was an acrobat and high wire artist. He set a daring goal to walk a wire strung between the two World Towers ... which was highly (‘scuse pun) illegal. He pursued this goal with a passion and in 1974, with the help and dedication of his girlfriend and group of faithful friends, he achieved it. A documentary, with original footage on this amazing feat, was released to TV screens in 2008 titled Man on a Wire. This film,The Walk, is gripping and on the edge of the seat cinema. Philippe is not the usual tough, macho type we have come to expect to be doing such incredible and dangerous feats and therefore the cast is well chosen with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He gives a strong performance as the intense young Philippe. The famous Ben Kinsley plays Philippe’s coach. Although this thrilling and death defying act has made Philippe Petit world famous, on all accounts he remains humble and lives an ordinary life. Also I am told that he assisted with the script writing. It is an ‘out of the ordinary’ film and should be put on all serious film goers ‘must see’ list. I’m giving it 4 stars. Everest The Walk Arriving in time for Christmas is the new second generation Survivor Rocket stove and the new Scout five-pot support compact stove. Along with the uniquely designed Dragon Pot for the Survivor, there are endless possibilities to show off your cooking skills. These stoves are extremely fuel-efficient and when burning wood are up to 80% more efficient than an open wood fire. Although mainly used in third world countries, these stoves are becoming increasingly popular in the great outdoors for those wishing to enjoy food cooked on a wood fire without the need for a large amount of wood. With their high fuel burning efficiency, they can use a variety of biomass fuels but more typically use small sticks and tinder you find in and around your yard or campsite (where allowed). When camping there is no need for a chainsaw, log splitter or axe, or loads of logs to take into camping areas. The fuel is basically what you can break in your hands or a little help with a tomahawk. And a 10kg bag of kindling will be enough for a typical family for three meals a day, for over five days. FREE FUEL! No more running out of gas, reliance on electricity or flammable liquid fuels to cook your meal. Great stoves to also have in your disaster preparedness kit. See my website: www.silverfire.com.au for the range of stoves and accessories available, or search “SilverFire” on your favourite browser for over 200 videos on YouTube. THE WESTERN RIVERSBy Heather Corfield

Long rivers are meandering Drought time the flow is shrinking

Over the bed of soil and sand In this western sunbaked land.

For folks these are the needs of life To the countryman and his wife,

Who may pump water for their stock Grazing there on the homestead block.

Moonie and the Diamantina The Bulloo and the Georgina,

Rivers that flow out in the west The ones country folks know the best. Out in Queensland’s Channel Country Where the rivers flow wide and free In flood times they are all rising there

And spreading swiftly everywhere. There you can see the open plains

And those times when it truly rains, The water flows so wide and free

Forming a western inland sea.
