Establishing the Coaching Agreement
! Coach chose the topic or didn’t attend to the topic the PBC chose.
! Coach asked PBC to choose the topic and stuck with that topic.
! Coach asked PBC to choose the topic and also explored measures of success for topic.
Establishing Trusting & Intimacy with Client
! Coach put the focus on the coach and what the coach knows.
! Coach put most focus on the PBC and what the PBC knows.
! Coach seemed really confident in the PBC as the expert.
Coaching Presence ! Coach mentored, consulted, taught
or did something other than coach. ! Coach partnered with the client in
problem-solving. ! Coach was fully present as a
coach, drawing out the solutions from the PBC.
Active Listening ! Coach paid attention to the coach’s
perspective and thoughts. ! Coach seemed to listen to the
content of what the PBC was saying.
! Coach heard the PBC at a deep level and helped PBC hear him/herself.
Powerful Questioning ! Most questions were leading,
complicated, or otherwise unproductive.
! Questions were mostly informational, helping the client to express what he/she already knew.
! Most of the questions were powerful, helping the client get to new thinking.
Direct Communication ! Coach’s communication was
convoluted, circuitous, or otherwise confusing.
! Coach communicated in a fairly direct and succinct way.
! Coach communicated clearly and was also able to use the PBC’s words.
Creating Awareness ! All or most of the new awareness
came from the coach, or there was no real new awareness for the PBC
! The new awareness was mostly at the problem-solving level.
! The PBC also gained new awareness about him/herself – attitudes, motivations, identity, etc.
Designing Actions ! Coach told the PBC what to do, or
no actions came from them session.
! Coach collaborated with the PBC in identifying actions, but the actions were not fully designed.
! Coach helped the client identify and design the actions.
