REPORT

EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR’S

MESSAGE

March 2016 This is going to hurt. Someone you knew died last year from alcohol or drugs. The grief of that tragic loss hasn’t lessened; it will take a lot longer. It has proba-bly changed you in ways you can’t yet recognize. It is the loneliest feeling on earth, but you’re not alone. In 2014, alcohol-induced deaths took 30,722 lives in America. Prescription pain-killers and heroin took an additional 28,647 lives. Does anyone imagine the numbers went down in 2015? The toll in our communi-ty is frightful, especially in view of the young lives, rich in potential, cut short and taken away. All of us are helpless when we wish to change the past. Often we are frustrated, and our efforts seem futile when we try to intervene in someone’s self-destruction. But we all may become empowered to shape the future. Here is how. First, each of us can be grateful for the miracle of recovery. The despondent practicing alcoholic or addict needs to see the joy of good living we have redis-covered. Second, we can be willing to extend a welcoming hand to any who seek help, to spark the glimmer of hope that keeps us coming back. Third, we can contribute materially to those most in need, the homeless, indigent alcoholics and addicts in recovery who are regaining a foothold in life, and becoming re-sponsible members of our community. Hundreds of individuals and organizations helped O’Brien House in 2015, in our mission to save lives and families from alcoholism and drug abuse. An unprece-dented number of donations came saturated with tears, as memorials to loved ones who lost their last chance for recovery, because O’Brien House is the only place that extends the welcoming hand to all, regardless of ability to pay. We thank our contributors for helping us to prevent relapse and rebuild lives. And we thank our friends in mourning for your courage, fortitude, and compas-sion with one another, and for unselfishly sharing your pain so that others may be warned, and perhaps saved.

In 2015, O’Brien House continued to build capacity and improve effectiveness of residential services to homeless persons in recovery.

2015 O’Brien House Client Demographics

With this report, O’Brien House presents utilization data based on discharged clients in order to establish the baseline for longitudinal outcomes tracking. 252 residential clients were discharged during the year, compared with a total of 301 served (based on the census January 1

st plus all

admissions). In 2014, by that measure, 276 clients were served. Over half our clients are ages 26 to 40, and three-fourths are male. Almost 90% report no income at intake, but over half are earning over $500 per month upon exit. Drug abuse has displaced alcohol abuse as the primary addiction, with a full third reporting addiction to both. Two-thirds of the discharges have achieved more than 90 days of sobriety. Just over one-third (36%) exit due to non-compliance (relapse). Enrollment in outpatient programs is also reported below. The most prominent highlight of 2015 was moving our female clients into the newly remodeled women’s dorm on November 11. This facility (photo on page 2) provides a modern home-like envi-ronment with 8 bedrooms serving up to 16 women.
