johnson, lyndon baines (1908-1973), a one-time texas school-teacher, became president of the united states on nov. 22, 1963, after the assassination of president john f. kenne-dy. johnson, a democrat, was the eighth vice-president to become chief executive upon the death of a president. he also was the first souther-ner to become president since andrew johnson of tennessee succeeded to the presidency after the assassination of abraham lincoln almost a hundred years earlier.

* * *in 1964, johnson was elected to a full term as president in a landslide victory. he and his running mate, senator hubert h. humphrey of minne-sota, defeated senator barry m. goldwater of arizona and representative william e. miller of new york. johnson’s presidency during kenne-dy’s unexpired term did not disqualify him from running for president in 1968.

* * *before lyndon johnson was elected vice-president in 1960, he had served in congress for almost 24 years. when john-son was only 29 years old, he won election in 1937 to the u.s. house of representatives. he was elected to the senate in 1948. five years later, at the age of 44, johnson was chosen as democratic leader of the senate—the youngest man ever elected senate leader by either party.

* * *as senate democratic majo-rity leader during the ad-ministration of republican president dwight d. eisenho-wer, johnson earned a repu-tation as a skillful, shrewd politician. he was a master at behind-the-scenes political tactics. time after time

Nels Johnson Clockmaker

1838 - 1915This is a copy of Nels John-son’s account of his life writ-

ten in his 76th year.In addition to clockmaking, which became the hallmark of Nels Johnsons career, he owned and operated a machine shop in Milwaukee, Wiscon-sin. In Manistee he started another machine shop which was lost in the fire of 1871. He built another machine shop, boiler works and foundry lo-cated on the present Rengo property between Water and First Streets. Two of the th-ree original buildings remain. Mr. Johnson found it ne-cessary to study astronomy at the University of Michigan for his clockmaking business. As an adjunct to his Cen-tury Tower Clock manufac-turing, he built a telescope in the early 1900’s which he later donated to Manistee

High School.Century Tower Clocks can be found throughout Michigan and the United States and in other countries - India,

China and England.Nels Johnson was a member of the American Astronomi-cal Society and the Astrono-mical Society of the Pacific. About 1914 an article about his accomplishments was published in the American

Magazine.
