Objects We Keep: My Holly Hobbie Doll
1974. Holly Hobbie dolls and style were in
fashion, at least for those who enjoyed the
pictures and merchandise that was around at that
time. I did. I thought the images were sweet. I was
intrigued by olden times when girls wore bonnets,
dressed differently and had such vastly different
lifestyles than what I had growing up. (I also
watched the tv series, Little House on the Prairie.)
As a surprise my mom made me a Holly Hobbie
style dress and a matching doll with a matching
dress I have no idea how she made both without
my knowing. She must have used those hours
we were at school to a great advantage.

I was thrilled with the dress and the doll. Knowing my mom, she possibly made
both the doll and the dress with no pattern or improvised from sewing patterns
she already had.
All these years later, the dress is long gone but I still have the doll.
Bet mom would be surprised and pleased.
Such a sweet doll. Such a nice surprise.
For some reason, my dad is cut off in the
photo, but I love that he is there, sitting
nearby on the step of the fireplace
watching all of us that Christmas.
Objects we keep. Can you imagine your mom hand making a doll that has a
matching dress to the dress she made for you? A labor of love. A lifetime of a
sweet memory.
