What is a ratio? Remember:

A ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division. The ratio of a to b can be written in two ways:

Examples: How?

How? How?

Examples:How do we use ratios in measurement? When comparing measurements, we usethe same unit of measurement in thenumerator as in the denominator.

(In this case, a ratio has no unit.)

TO ILLUSTRATE RATIOSIN REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS

Other examples Situations:

a. We always use ratio in cooking: the ratio of eggs to flour;the ratio of salt to water; the ratio of chickens to pork.

b. When at the grocery store, I buy 5 bananas for 60 pesos. The ratio is written as 5:60 or 60:5 or 12:1.

c. At a grocery store, there was a sale of buy one take onefree loaf of bread at PHP70. That is, for every loaf of breadyou buy, you get one free. The ratio is 1:1.
