• Latest version of Oracle’s Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition reporting platform
– Version 12.2.1 is most recent
– Runs on the new Oracle database 12c as well as Oracle database 11g (as well as other non Oracle databases)
– Oracle provides automated upgrade path and utility
• It is generally available and fully supported
– First released in Oct 2015
• Includes Oracle Data Visualization (Visual Analyzer)

Upgrading OBIEE 11g to OBIEE 12c
• Key points:
– Upgrade is ‘Out of Place’
• Existing 11g system kept intact and operational
– Leverage Oracle 12c Upgrade Utility
• Upgrade utility is a JAR file that is copied from an Oracle BI 12c install to the 11g system to be upgraded
• Upgrade utility generates an upgrade ‘bundle’ (i.e. BI Application Archive file) that is copied to 12c system and imported. BAR file contains:
– System security configuration
– Oracle BI repository
– Oracle BI Presentation Services Catalog
– BI Publisher

Key Considerations for Planning 12c Upgrade
• Outlined below are some items to take into account when planning the upgrade to OBIEE 12c:
– Usage tracking and related cleanup – do all reports need to be migrated?
– What existing performance issues exist and should they be resolved before migrating?
– Are best practices used throughout the RPD and dashboards/reports?
– Are there any new features which can be utilized to improve usage of current reports?
– What is the best release strategy to minimize impact to the 11g system and users (e.g. other OBIEE-related initiatives need to be addressed during planning)
– Training strategy and approach (e.g. train the trainer, etc.)
