Blest Be the TiesHannah,picturedwithTonyKennedy,isafreshmanatOklahomaBaptistUniversity.SheisanexampleofOBHC’scontinuedtiestostudentsaftertheyleaveourcampuses.Lastyear,1,025formerresidentswereenrolledinourAfterCareProgram.
Worth a Thousand WordsAttwoofourHopePregnancyCenters,asclientsentertheHPCprogram,theyreceivea“positivebag”whichcontains,amongotherthings,acouponforanewbornphotosession.Afterthebabyisborn,themotherisencouragedtomakeanappointmentforaphotosession.ShereceivesaphotoCDandagiftcardtodevelopthephotosofherchoosing,thankingherforchoosinglife.Lastyear,253mothersletusknowofthebirthoftheirbaby,andmanyofthesetookadvantageofthephotoopportunity.Since1986,8,720babiesareknowntohavebeenbornthroughtheHPCministries.
A Standing OvationHelen,ahighschoolsenior,isexcellingatherschoolinpublicspeakingandwasgivenastandingovationassheaddressedthemessengerstotheAnnualMeetingoftheBaptistGeneralConventionofOklahomain2011atFirstBaptistChurch,Moore.SheplanstocontinuehereducationandwillbeassistedbyscholarshipsprovidedbyOBHC.ScholarshipfundsgivenbyfriendsofOBHCprovidespecialleadershipandtrainingopportunitiesforourstudents.
Going the Extra MileJacobwasassistedinpurchasingapickuptruckwhichisessentialintransportinghishogsandotherFFAprojects,aswellasgettingtohisafterschoolemployment.YoungpeoplewholiveoncampusaregiventheopportunitytopurchasevehiclesdonatedbyfriendsofOBHC.Responsibilityindrivingandmaintainingavehicleisanimportantstepontheroadtoadulthood.Jacobhasthereputationforgoingtheextramileinhelpingotherstudentsoncampus;anyonewithapickuphaslotsoffriendsandopportunitiestohelp.

Godisamazinglycreative.Hecreatedavastuniverseandfilleditwithallkindsofcreatures.Thereareoveronemillionknownspeciesofinsects,andsomepeopleestimatethereareactuallybetween15and30millionspecies. Thereareabout24,000speciesofbutterflies.Insomeways,butterfliesseemveryfragile,butmonarchbutterfliesjourneyfromtheGreatLakestotheGulfofMexico,adistanceofabout2,000miles,andreturntothenorthagaininthespring. Sinceancienttimes,thebutterflyhasbeenasymbolofchangeandtransformation.Inmanyways,theamazinglifecycleofthebutterflyreflectsaspectsoftheministryofOklahomaBaptistHomesforChildren.Therearefourstagesinthelifecycleofabutterfly.• Theegg–Mostfemalebutterfliesattachthistinyroundobjecttoaleaforstemoftheplantthatthecaterpillarwilleat.Ifyoulookcloselyenough,youcanactuallyseethetinycaterpillargrowinginsidetheegg.ThiscriticalstageofthebutterflyremindsmeofthelimitedultrasoundsprovidedatourHopePregnancyCenters.Lastyear,ofthewomenwhoviewedanultrasoundofthelifegrowingwithinthem,94%choselife.• Thecaterpillar(orlarva)–Whentheeggfinallyhatches,it’snotabutterflythatemerges,butacaterpillar.Caterpillarsdon’tstayinthisstageverylong,andmostlyalltheydoiseat.BuckminsterFullerwrote,“Thereisnothinginacaterpillarthattellsyouit’sgoingtobeabutterfly.”Thisremindsmeofthechildrenweserve.Manycometoushavingsufferedabuse,abandonment,orneglectandittakesfaithtoseethateachisagiftfromGodandhasamazingpotential.• Thechrysalis(orpupa)–Whenthecaterpillarisfinishedgrowing,itformsitselfintoapupa.Fromtheoutside,itlooksasifthecaterpillarmayjustberesting,butinsidethepupa,thecaterpillarisrapidlychanging.Withinthechrysalis,aremarkabletransformationormetamorphosistakesplace.Thisremindsmeofthechangesthattakeplaceinachildwhenheorsheisplacedintheloving,stableenvironmentofourcottages.Acottageislike
acocooninwhichthechildcanexperiencetheloveofChrist.• Theadultbutterfly–Whenthebutterflyfirstemergesfromthechrysalis,bothofitswingswillbesoftandfoldedagainstitsbody.Butusuallywithinthreeorfourhours,thebutterflywillmasterflying.ThisstageremindsmeofourindependentlivingandAfterCareprogramswhereouryoungpeoplearereadytotakeflightandtaketheirfirststepsintoadulthood. Ourmissionistohelpchildrenbecomecapable,caringChristianadultsbysharingChrist’sloveandprovidinghopeandhomesforchildren.Likethebutterfly,thesechildrenexperienceadifficultjourney,butultimatelyundergoaremarkabletransformationbecauseofthetransformingloveofChristandthefaithfulnessofHispeople.
