BBC Radio 2 500 Word Competition

We have just received the news that George Whitelaw and Freddie de la Rue's stories made it through to the Under 13 'longlist' of the BBC short story competition, although they have not been selected for the final Top 50. To put this achievement into context, the BBC received over 150,000 entries this year for their annual competition. This was reduced to a 'longlist' of 5,000 by a wide range of judges. The Reading Agency then selected the Top 50 stories from the 5000 longlist. The standard in the second round was exceptional. Both of our writers should feel very proud.

obh mail What has been happening in Stable Yard

Well done to the Middle School children for another fantastic week at school. After a very cold start to term it has been lovely to see the children running around outside making the most of our school grounds. It is the time of year when children are busy making bug homes and playing in and around the Japs.

We held our first Middle School assembly of the term. Mr O’Sullivan had the pleasure of presenting certificates to all the children in Years 3 and 4 who had successfully completed all of their times tables challenges. This has involved a great deal of hard work and practice and I commend all of the children for their effort. Well done also to Cecilly Jewers, Alistair Ball, Matteo Barberini and Hettie Brown for their wonderful creative writing and to Joseph Bates, Alfie Robson, Florence Rook and Florence Morgan for their continued hard work in maths. They were all very proud of their certificates.

Within our theme of Ancient Greece, Year 3 had great fun creating their own Greek mythical beast. I was very impressed by the level of imagination and individuality and I look forward to displaying their finished designs. The list of descriptive WOW words is filling up our display board fast. In maths, the children have carried out increasingly challenging multiplication and word problems using a number line to support their learning. Year 3 French is great fun and the children

are busy coming up with interesting actions to help them to learn new sporting vocabulary. On Wednesday, Mrs Campbell, Mrs Barrett and the Year 2 children came to share their wonderful letters. It was a lovely morning and the Year 3 experts were able to answer all of the questions very clearly and eloquently. The Year 3 children will now write letters in return and I hope we can match the excellent standard set by Year 2. The children are sharing a playtime together next Tuesday and I am sure that many new friendships will develop. This is the start of a number of fun transition activities which will take place in the Year 3 classrooms. Mrs Warren, Mr Pascalides, Mr and Mrs Gillott

obh mail What’s next in Stable Yard? Blazers for Cricket With a number of cricket fixtures coming up this term for both boys and girls, I would ask that blazers are kept hung up in the children’s classrooms at all times. Boarder’s blazers can be kept in their usual place upstairs.

West Stow Trip & Year 4 Camp Out Tuesday 9th May & Friday 12th May Year 4 are very excited about their forthcoming history trip to West Stow on Tuesday 9th and the camp out on the grounds of OBH on Friday 12th May. It would be very helpful if parents could print, sign and return the camp out consent form attached to the recent Clarion Call. We can then ensure that there is plenty of food to go round. Please bring the children’s kit to the Britten Hall on the morning of the 12th May and we can store everything safely.

Grandparents’ & Godparents’ Strawberry Tea Friday 12th May 1.30 pm We look forward to welcoming Grandparents and Godparents for a strawberry tea and a tour of the school on Friday 12th May.

obh mail Year 6 Oundle Science Day

For the past two years, Oundle School have hosted a ‘Science Afternoon’ for Year 6 pupils. This year they added some DT and, as a result the event started in the late morning. Fenella Jewers, Charlie Hayhurst, Bryce Surguy and Xander Brown had a great time, competing with six oth-er schools at Oundle’s new STEM facility ‘SciTec’. They participated in a variety of activities: conducting solu-bility experiments, testing crumple zones and packaging to protect eggs, programming a robot to pick up a ping pong ball and even extracting DNA from their cheeks! There was also time for a marvellous lunch and during our stay we met a considerable number of ex-OBH pu-pils. The day was a huge success and was certainly enjoyed by all.

obh mail Boarding at OBH The weather has not been too kind this week however, there have still been nights when we have been able to get out and about on bikes, play in the crickets nets and the croquet lawn has seen some action too. We are looking forward to the weekend, when our weekend boarders are taking on ‘The minute to Win it Challenge’. Teams of boarders will be pitted against each other to complete challenges in under a minute! On Sunday most of us will visit Brandon Country Park before attending a rather special Confirmation Service at Thorpe Morieux. The Year 8’s will also be working hard preparing for their Common Entrance exams. Notices Weekends If your child boards at the weekend, it is vital that we know if your child will be off-site for any specific reason, and the timings, as we have to plan activities. Please note there are also several off-site trips this term, so please ensure you return your children after the off-site activity trips have returned to OBH, as there will be no duty staff on-site. Sunday 7th May: Brandon Country Park – off-site from 9.30am until 1.30pm Confirmation service – off-site from 3.40pm until the end of the service (approx. 1hr) Sunday 11th June: Thorpeness – off-site from 12.00 noon until late. Birthday Teas If your child is boarding on their birthday, and would like a birthday tea, please email [email protected] (girls) or [email protected] (boys). Trial Boarding / Change of nights If your child would like to try boarding or would like to add additional nights please email [email protected] (girls) or [email protected] (boys) and we will do our best to accommodate your requests.

On Wednesday evening a group of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils were lucky enough to visit Wattisham Airfield for their annual Open Day. Wattisham is the home of the British Army’s Attack Helicopter Force and the

mighty AH-64 Apache helicopter. We regularly see them flying around the skies over OBH, but this was a rare chance to get up close to inspect these impressive helicopters and to chat

with the aircrew who fly in them and the ground crew who look after them. The pupils

clambered around the Apaches, tried on survival kit, handled small arms and learnt all about how the Apache is operated. Who would have thought that the sensors on it are so sensitive that pilots flying over fields can

detect the difference between the night air and the warm breath of cows as they breathe out. We also enjoyed the chance to inspect some historical aircraft of the past,

namely the mighty Phantom and beautiful Hawker Hunter. Right at the end of the evening as we walked to the bus we were treated to an impromptu flying display by an Apache as its crew practised their manoeuvres – an exciting end to a fantastic evening.

obh mail Year 7 Poem Year 7 prepared for the visit of the founder of the OS-CAR foundation by looking at documentary material about Mumbai's 'slum communities'. These programmes ex-plored both the poor sanitation and dangers (fire, col-lapsing buildings etc) but also the genuine sense of com-munity and lack of crime. We also examined Imtiaz Dharker's poetry inspired by her visits into Dharavi as part of a Unicef team. We planned our own poems and were helped enormously by Ashok joining us to discuss both the problems and the positives of life in his com-munity.

Ambedkar Nagar by Sam Collins

Let me guide you Through the streets,

Full of mixed communities.

Let me guide you All around, children

Playing on rubbish grounds.

Let me guide you Through the streets,

Like a maze full of hope.

As I stand still, Time goes by, people

Hoping for a better life.

As I stand still, I pray, thinking about

The time when I was young.

As I stand still, Or sleep at night,

I dream of my loving life.

Balancing Water by Luis Rodero

The streets are decorated with rubbish. I’m fetching water for the family;

Walking down the water pipe, Balancing five containers in my hands.

While others go off to school, I work throughout the day,

Walking down the water pipe, Balancing five containers in my hands.

Without knowing how to read or write, This is what I do each day,

Walking down the water pipe, Balancing five containers in my hands.

The Maze by Rupert Guin-ness

Within this modern metropolis Lie the Ambedkar Nagar slums –

A labyrinth of narrow paths.

Water pipes like giant snakes Offer paths above the litter and

sewage Giving off an unbearable stench.

A dozen homes share a single

Tap of water, rationed to Just two hours a day.

Tin houses camouflaged

With rubbish are stacked Up to the heavens.

Streets turn into

Mosques, as people Stop to pray.

Let Me by Isadora Cutler

Let me guide you through Ambedkar Nagar, through

The passageways. Smell the spices; See the colour.

Let me guide you through My house, where you can

Share our delicious bread, Share our happy home,

Share our night and life.

Ambedkar Nagar is my home, Where I work for my family,

The washing, the cleaning.

Ambedkar Nagar is my home, Where I know everyone,

Where I speak to everyone,

Ambedkar Nagar is my home. Ambedkar Nagar is my life.

obh mail The Slums by Hamish Sugden

Precarious ladders lead to cramped houses

Buildings hang over head, Creating constant danger.

Water is restricted People starved, ravenous, famished for food. Narrow passageways where no two shall pass.

Though energy bursts, vibrant colours adorn

the streets, Everyone knows each other.

Industry is rife, space is well used. Communities are powerful, standing together.

Nothing is wasted, not even trash. Everything is valued.

Next to these slums the rich men live,

Snide and proud and quick to think. Yet these survivors are living in hope

Of miracles and life.

A never- ending light by Sam Harrison

Is this reality? Rights ground to dust.

Civilisation abandoned by authority. Street dwellers frowned upon

And discarded. A colossal labyrinth of debris,

Heaps of rubbish stacked crookedly On top of each other.

Wealth engulfed by poverty A putrid stench surges through their

Confined world. They live in the dumps But thrive off faith.

I wonder how they survive. Yet, communities are alive With positivity and hope.

They’re joyous beyond compare. The light in their lives

Shines and gleams as if everyday Is a celebration of life.

There is a Light by William Cardozo

Civilisation became a dilapidated world. Confined streets, like a labyrinth

And ramshackle houses, slanted like an aged man. Huge peaks of rubbish

As far as the eye can see And the stench of debris, left for others to clear.

Beyond this life is a new world……

Where wealthy people live affluent lives: Flashy cars and vast houses

With all the money To save the slums.

In this darkness, There is a light,

Where people live happy, carefree and bright.

Where they always stand to meet their fears.

In a community which has thrived through-out the years.

The Slums by Caspar Hall

Precarious ladders reach As high as the sky.

Not much water Not many supplies.

There’s a lack of space Nowhere to play

Houses huddled together Narrow alleyways.

But there’s a happy community Colourful and bright

People never seem down Always look to the light.

They recycle everything Nothing is put to waste

If they see something valuable They quicken their pace.

Communities are thankful For all that they own

Life is to be treasured No one is alone.

A peek at our week We have had another lovely week in the Pre-Prep from the arrival of caterpillars in Reception to let-ter writing in Year 1. The Reception class are very excited about watching their caterpillars grow and develop into butterflies over the next few weeks. The Year 1 children have been jolly busy writing postcards and letters this week, based on a lovely story about Greenpeace.

Ola and Bonjour I discovered only the other day that Mrs Keeling and the Nursery children sing their morning welcome song in lots of different languages - how amazing. They have also just added lovely, colourful signs to their classroom saying ‘hello’ in a whopping ten dif-ferent languages. I can’t wait to test them all in a few weeks!

Parent Activity Morning After the success of the Firework activity morning in November we decided to host another, this time with a Nature theme. It was lovely to be able to wel-come so many parents into the Pre-Prep and see them all getting thoroughly involved in the activities with their children. Many thanks indeed for coming along and joining in with such enthusiasm. Lots of the pieces you worked on with your children will be on display soon, so do keep an eye out for your moment of fame on the classroom display boards. I look forward to seeing lots of Grandparents and Godparents next Friday. Have a nice weekend, Camilla Webster

On Wednesday this week, Year 2 pu-pils visited the Middle School in or-der to meet Mrs Warren and the Year 3 children in preparation for their move up to the Middle School in September. A very excited and lively class of Mrs Campbell’s and Mrs Webster’s children were very warmly welcomed. They all sat next to a cur-rent Year 3 pupil in order to hear about life in the Prep school. Year 2 had written letters to Mrs Warren last week to ask some ques-tions about what goes on in Year 3 and what differences there might be in the ‘big school.’ Mrs Warren read these out to her pupils so that they could answer in detail. Mrs Warren’s class were lovely - making the Year 2’s feel thoroughly at home. At the end of the visit, they were invited again back next week, to enjoy play-time and snack with the Year 3 pupils. We would like to thank Mrs Warren, Mr Pascalides and Mrs Powell for making us all feel so welcome and we look forward to next week’s visit.

Boys Cricket

1st XI v St John’s In almost a replica of our last match, the 1st XI narrowly lost, this time by 6 runs, in a soggy yet captivating encounter against St John’s College. In wet conditions, our bowling was too short and we conceded too many extras in the field. The opposition opener played very well and we struggled to contain him in their total of 130 for 2. Our reply started badly as we stumbled to 20 for 4, but Caspar Hall (22) and Barney Anderson (16) rebuilt the wreckage before George Whitelaw (42) and Ted Pryke (24) made a late bid for victory with big hits and quick running, but ended up just short.

2nd XI v St.John’s The OBH boys won the toss and opted to bowl first in difficult rainy conditions. The bowling was tight and consistent which allowed OBH to get a few quick wickets. By the tea break the boys had bowled St. John’s out for 57 runs. Once in bat OBH batted ‘extremely well and were able to get the runs set with ease. Well done boys, on an overall great performance.

Colts A v St. John’s Result Lost 92 for 5 (20 overs) (OBH) – 93 for 0 (SJ) – (15 Overs) The boys batted well and scored plenty of short singles to boost our score to 93 from our 20 overs. The opposition bowled more accurately and hence every bad delivery needed to be hit for four if we were to set a more demanding total for a very good pair of opening batsmen from St. John’s. The boys were up for the challenge and although they were freezing cold and wet by the end of the game they had fielded well. Plenty of commitment had been shown as the ball had been struck with plenty of power towards them and with more accurate bowling I am sure that the boys will make it tougher for opponents to score runs in future. Well done, for your good efforts boys and keep pitching the ball up and showing continued commitment in the field.

Colts B v St. John’s Result: St John’s won by 7 wickets On a miserable day, weather-wise, the B team took on a very strong St John’s team. OBH showed some skill and bravery against some accurate, quite fast bowling. Wickets did fall and once again important lessons were learned about running quick singles. The boys deserve great credit for enduring the pressure and posting a target of 91 runs for the home side to chase. Unfortunately, St John’s batting was too strong and they reached the target with overs to spare. Along the way, however, the B team took three good wickets and some excellent fielding skills were displayed in their attempt to keep runs to a minimum. A valiant effort from the team!

U9 A v Holmwood House The U9’s started their season off well with a win against Holmwood House on Tuesday. The boys batted first and set a relatively high target for the visitors. It was pleasing to see the improvement in their running between the wickets, stealing some very good singles and keeping the scoreboard ticking over. OBH bowled well, concentrating on their line and length rather than out and out pace! A solid performance by the boys.

U9 B v Holmwood House The boys enjoyed their first cricket match of the season. Holmwood House batted first and scored a total of 72 runs. OBH then went into bat and hit some good runs and also ran well between the wickets. Unfortunately the boys weren’t quite able to reach the Holmwood House total scoring a total of 63 runs.

U9 C v Holmwood House This was the boys’ first match of the season. OBH were the first to bat and scored an impressive 139 in two overs. The Holmwood boys just pipped us by 3 runs scoring 142. Well done for a gallant effort with fielding, batting and bowling.

obh mail Girls Cricket

U13A v St. John’s The girls welcomed a strong St John’s team on Wednesday for their first match of the season and were put into bat first. The opening pair played well and totalled 22 off of 3 overs. The remainder of the innings, we batted out well but unfortunately lost too many wickets, which meant our total runs were reduced by 30 giving us a total of 53. The girls regrouped and came into the field positive and in good spirits knowing what they needed to do to limit the runs. St John's were strong and connected with the ball well. OBH struggled to compete with the dreadful weather conditions and slippery ball but continued to work hard and encourage each other. Lots to work on as we prepare for a hard ball match at Orwell on Saturday!

U13B v St. John’s The U13B girls had high hopes after their win last week of another successful day on the cricket pitch. The weather as usual in the cricket season had turned wintery and it was raining however, our girls chose to bowl first and carried this out well, showing a marked improvement since their first training session two weeks ago. Their fielding was tight and Maisy took a beautiful catch too. We held St. John’s to 239 and were pleased with our performance. Sadly however, our opening pair faced some fast-paced bowling and lost several wickets and although we batted well, the loss of six wickets overall was a real blow to our final score line of 222. In our next training session we will be looking at placing shots through the field to limit catches and practising when to run, to avoid being run out…..well done, girls, you coped well with the driving rain and although it was a loss, there is much to celebrate and learn from.

U9 v Holmwood House The U9's had a wonderful start to the cricket term with a close encounter against Holmwood House. The girls batted first and showed great confidence, communicated well with other, losing just 1 wicket. The girls took to the field and showed how much they have already improved this term with amazing bowling at such a young age; showing accuracy and consistency. They were rewarded by taking the win by just 2 runs!!! Well done, girls!

Won by 30 runs (OBH 205, St. John’s 175)

The girls built on their good form from last week with a determined win against St. John’s. Despite losing a wicket from the first ball of the match, OBH batted well and began to pepper the short leg side boundary with plenty of 4s and also a couple of big sixes. It was great to see the girls running with confidence and making sensible decisions on when to attack and when to defend. I was delighted to see some cover drives make an appearance and scoring on the off side is definitely an area for future improvement. Only 2 wickets were lost so a decent score was posted of 205. The captain made an excellent decision to protect the short leg side boundary with extra fielders and this proved crucial as these ‘boundary riders’ restricted attacking shots to just singles. The bowling was accurate and threatening to start off with, which meant wickets fell and OBH were controlling the game. Then the heavens opened and a nasty, windy squall meant bowling became very difficult. Lots of wides were bowled and this brought St. John’s back into the game. True, the ball was now very wet and difficult to control, but we will need to tighten up on this next match. Just when it looked like things might be slipping away the OBH strike bowlers delivered with a second spell and were able to prevent St. John’s getting too close. Overall, a pleasing victory, especially as the girls did well not to succumb to the weather, and their cricket is getting better and better. Areas to target for next time: Bowling a good line and length, more dynamism in the field and scoring on the off side.

Rugby success Last weekend six Year 8 boys (Ed Collins, George Whitelaw, Barney Anderson, Harry Bidwell, Archie Rook and Ed Hughes) were involved in the Road to Rio Rugby Sevens in Ipswich. They were playing for Sudbury Rugby Club and represented themselves extremely well. The team won all four group games and then had an easy win in the semi-finals and then beat Bury in the final with a score line of 30-20. The photo shows a victorious team full of OBH boys! Well done, boys.

Congratulations to Josh Green and his fellow team mates , the U12 football team at Boxford Rovers who won their division in the Suffolk Youth League! They had to win their the final match of the season last weekend. They beat East Bergholt 3-0. Team coach, Barry Green (Josh’s dad!) commented that it is amazing that a little village like Boxford can produce winning teams competing against all the big towns. It was espe-cially sweet, as, this of course this is Josh’s last season with them and Bar-ry’s as coach. In recent years Josh’s Boxford football team have played at OBH and we will be looking forward to seeing them play at the Oscar Founda-tion match in October.

obh mail And finally…… There is the definite extra hum of academic endeavour around the school at the moment, with the advent of Common Entrance exams looming in early June. Year 8 pupils have been working diligently every evening - despite looking longingly at the Year 7 children playing in the nets! However, their efforts will pay off and they will soon be enjoying the many de-lights of the Leavers’ programme. We wish Charlie Martin and Flossie Myers the very best of luck when they go up to Oundle next week to sit their respective scholarships - our thoughts will be with them, we are very proud of all the hard work and perseverance they have both shown on their scholarship journey during this year. Reflecting on how far the Year 8 pupils have come in the last six years made me think about our current Year 2 pupils. This week they took up the kind invitation from Mrs Warren to visit the Middle School in readiness for their transition to the Prep school in September. Their slight trepidation as they entered the Year 3 classroom was soon ameliorated by Mrs Warren, Mr Pascalides and Mrs Powell, who, along with the Year 3 children made them feel very much at home. As one year group’s adventure at OBH is about to end the other is just beginning, it was so lovely to see Year 2’s excitement in moving to the ‘big school’. It was super to see so many parents at the Pre Prep ‘drop in’ morning this morning - it is wonderful for the children to be able to share their work and classroom with their parents. It also gives you, the parents, an interesting insight in to life beyond the classroom door. We have many exciting events to look forward to in the coming weeks, the first of which is the Confirmation Service at Thorpe Morieux Church on Sunday. Parents of pupils involved are warmly welcomed to attend the post service refreshments in school. On Friday next week, we have the Grandparents’ and Godparents’ Strawberry Tea - a very popular annual event in the OBH calendar. We look forward to welcoming everyone again. Mr O’Sullivan sends his apologies in advance, as he will be attending an IAPS conference. I hope that you are making the most of the time in the next two weeks brushing up on your general knowledge and current affairs in readiness for the Friends Quiz Night, which is to be held on Friday 19th May! This is always an hilarious, if somewhat competitive evening which will be hosted this year by the Chair of Governors, Mr Nick Bullen. Do come along and join in the fun.

Have a good weekend,
