1 OBEDIENCE TRAINING CLUB OF WICHITA FALLS, INC. HIGH JUMP APRIL 2014 SPRING is here. At least we certainly hope so. As for the old saying about extreme cold gets rid of annoying insects — not so much. We have already had the first waves of mosquitoes, ticks, red bugs — and other critters. Please be very wary when going from a brightly lit area into a darker one — the wasps and yellow jackets are out in force also. Sor- ry, folks, that is SPRING in Texas. This month, we have our regularly scheduled spring agility trial. Please pray that Mother Nature keeps her histrionics to herself. A nice, gentle spring shower will be more than welcome — but we really don’t need snow, sleet, hail, anything whirling, or for that matter, a 100 degree day. As usual, we will be needing help at the trial, both inside the rings and set up/take down, as well. Please consider working on Sunday, especially the afternoon classes. Our out of town friends are anx- ious to get on the road for home, and that leaves pretty slim pickin’s for manning the rings. And yes, last but not least, we are already in full swing working on the June Agility Trial. In addition to the trial itself, we will have a raffle, and provide side dishes for the wonderful hamburgers and hot dogs provided by the crew from American National Bank and Trust. If you aren’t interested in the agili- ty, itself, the raffle provides a perfect way to get in some of your work assignments. Last, but certainly not least, at last month’s meeting, we welcomed some new members to the Board of Di- rectors of the Club. New members, are Albert Birks, Vice President, Katrena Mitchell, Obedience Chair, Suzanne Bice, Program Chair, Carolyn Harde- gree, Building Chair, and Shara Humpert, Therapy Chair. These folks join those already sitting on the Board: Dana Goff, President, Martha Davis, Secre- tary, David Hodges, Treasurer, Linda Musgrave, Agility Chair, Karen Reed, Membership Chair, Connie Haschke, Communications (newsletter editor), and Frank Haschke C.A.E. If you have anything you would like to see implemented, changed, embellished, or “fixed”, please feel free to contact any of these fine volunteers. You may have noticed that there is no Web Master on the list at this time. Dana’s son, Terry Austin, has been kind enough to obtain a new web home for our web site. It is up and running and offers valua- ble info to the community and anyone interested in us. It also has interactive contact which can be used to initiate obedience or agility info. Please go in and poke around and familiarize yourself with all of the helpful things on the site — www.otcwf.org.

HIGH JUMP

APRIL 2014

SPRING is here. At least we certainly hope so. As

for the old saying about extreme cold gets rid of

annoying insects — not so much. We have already

had the first waves of mosquitoes, ticks, red bugs —

and other critters. Please be very wary when going

from a brightly lit area into a darker one — the

wasps and yellow jackets are out in force also. Sor-

ry, folks, that is SPRING in Texas.

This month, we have our regularly scheduled spring

agility trial. Please pray that Mother Nature keeps

her histrionics to herself. A nice, gentle spring

shower will be more than welcome — but we really

don’t need snow, sleet, hail, anything whirling, or for

that matter, a 100 degree day.

As usual, we will be needing help at the trial, both

inside the rings and set up/take down, as well.

Please consider working on Sunday, especially the

afternoon classes. Our out of town friends are anx-

ious to get on the road for home, and that leaves

pretty slim pickin’s for manning the rings.

And yes, last but not least, we are already in full

swing working on the June Agility Trial. In addition

to the trial itself, we will have a raffle, and provide

side dishes for the wonderful hamburgers and hot

dogs provided by the crew from American National

Bank and Trust. If you aren’t interested in the agili-

ty, itself, the raffle provides a perfect way to get in

some of your work assignments.

Last, but certainly not least, at last month’s meeting,

we welcomed some new members to the Board of Di-

rectors of the Club. New members, are Albert

Birks, Vice President, Katrena Mitchell, Obedience

Chair, Suzanne Bice, Program Chair, Carolyn Harde-

gree, Building Chair, and Shara Humpert, Therapy

Chair. These folks join those already sitting on the

Board: Dana Goff, President, Martha Davis, Secre-

tary, David Hodges, Treasurer, Linda Musgrave,

Agility Chair, Karen Reed, Membership Chair, Connie

Haschke, Communications (newsletter editor), and

Frank Haschke C.A.E. If you have anything you

would like to see implemented, changed, embellished,

or “fixed”, please feel free to contact any of these

fine volunteers.

on the list at this time. Dana’s son, Terry Austin,

has been kind enough to obtain a new web home for

our web site. It is up and running and offers valua-

ble info to the community and anyone interested in

COOKIE CORNER:

I apologize for my lapse in following through on this fea-

ture of the High Jump, but there has been so much news,

there just hasn’t been room. I found the following recipe

under my computer desk — not sure where I got it. It

makes a huge amount of treats, so either be prepared to

freeze them, or cut the recipe in half.

Banana and Peanut Butter Treats

10 small, ripe Bananas

1 Cup Crunchy Peanut Butter

4 Eggs

1 Cup Skim Milk

1/4 Cup Oil

1/4 Cup Honey

1 tsp. Vanilla

2-3 Tablespoons Bacon Grease (optional)

1/4 lbs. Cooked Chopped Bacon (optional)

3 Cups Oatmeal

1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour

1 Cup Unbleached All Purpose Flour

1/2 Cup Flax Seed Meal

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix first 6 ingredients, set aside. Mix dry ingredients.

Stir dry ingredients into wet.

Using a spatula, spread onto two 12”x17” cookie sheets

(greased).

Bake 30 minutes.

Cool and cut into squares.

Can be frozen.

Editor’s Note: If these don’t make your best fur friend

happy, I don’t know what will. I know mine would love a

batch, but that would mean taking Frank’s bananas away

from him. These sound good enough for human consump-

tion.

Know your pet — if they have wheat allergies, use your

food processor to grind some extra oatmeal into oat flour

— it is very hard to find in stores. Also, if you have a dog

with pancreas issues, leave out the oil and bacon grease —

and use turkey bacon if you wish to have bacon taste.

ENJOY!!!!

With Condolences:

Written by Lisa Phillips, on February 3rd. Sorry I

missed this for last month’s newsletter.

It is with great sadness that I report that "Wilbarger" was assisted to the Rainbow Bridge this morning. UKC Grand Champion/ AKC Champion Heart of Gold Good Wilbarger, HT PT HSAs STDs HCT JHD RN CGC NAJ NAP OAP NJP OJP AJP turned 15 last July 22. Wil (and I!) started agility later in life and Wil's talent- though he was never fast- took us from Novice to Excellent in one year. Also, though I have been participating in herding events since 1988 and have put many many, many AHBA, AKC and a few ASCA titles on various dogs through the years, Wilbarger is my first (and my only) dog that I have put the AKC Started title on. That in itself was a long but wonderful road that only served to tighten our bond. He taught me so many things, mostly to value each and every day with our beloved companions, they give us so much of their heart...and he sure took a piece of mine with him when he left. His place on the bed will be so empty but....now he is running free

at the Bridge, herding sheep and playing with his toys, waiting until the day when we will see each other again.

Editor’s Note: In addition to his performance and confor-

mation prowess, he also got to play stud dog once. Monica

was supposed to be bred to Wil’s sire, Nick, but she didn’t

care for him. I asked Lisa to go down and get Wil. Mon-

ica took him into the bedroom, and the end result was a

wonderful litter, one of whom, we still have. The surviving

boy dog out of the litter was my Crawford — CH. Abydos

Love Changes Everything. The two girls were Ch. Abydos

Here Comes Bertrand (Bertie) who still resides at Camp

Abydos, and Ch. Abydos All I Need to Know. Unfortu-

nately we lost Crawford very early on to heat stroke and

Allie to a separated spinal cord, she went down in the

back but survived nicely for about 3 years with her cart.

Bert is now 13 1/2, and doing well. Wil and Monica are now

romping at the Bridge, waiting for all of us to join them.

News From Other Fronts:

From Paws for Greatness:

Connie, do you think we need to put something in the newslet-ter about the club building being used by PAWS so everyone knows when there are cars out there that maybe they don't rec-ognize? Diann sent a schedule of our classes. They are going to be M-F 3:15-5:15. Also, I sent a thank you to the club board the other day. I'd like to say thank you to the whole club for being so supportive of PAWS. Could we do that? Something brief: To our friends and co-OTCWF club members...a huge thanks for allowing PAWS for Greatness to conduct classes in the obe-dience club facilities. Within the next several months we should have 20-30+ dogs and as many or more youth taking part in the PAWS training. Without your support and the safe environment of the club and grounds, this program would have a big chal-lenge, looking for a warm/cool environment week to week. So, thank you. We appreciate each of you. Suzanne Bice and Diann Bowman

From Linda Musgrave:

An update on Hideaway’s Genesis AKA Adam PWC

Adam’s right eye is looking better this week after his surgery Monday afternoon. Bless him, every time we call him now he starts winking at us, drop time AGAIN???? He has been a true champ thru it all. Adam IS my HEART DOG and I am thank-ful to his breeder and to Connie and Frank who picked him up and brought him to me almost 8 years ago. He will be 11 June 3rd. He helped this ol’ gal thru some hard times while I was go-ing thru my cancer surgeries and has truly been a blessing to me. He is now retired from Agility after earning 2 MACHS, and even though he doesn’t know it, he would continue running if I weren’t afraid of another injury. My thought is this, what else does he have to prove? He is a Champion Breed Dog, A MACH 2 Agility Dog, but most of all, he is one of my very best friends ever. Love this boy. Keep fingers and paws crossed that we get a good report Monday.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers.

So many losses for our Club recently, both in family members and in our pets. So hard to say Goodbye to those we love so much. HUGS to you all.

Linda and Adam

From Chris Hodges:

Connie You might put in the newsletter that Jack will be having surgery on Thursday and could use prayers that it goes well. Thanks Chris

Editor’s Note: Praying and keeping fingers & paws crossed for suc-

cessful surgery. Go get ‘em, Jack.

BRAGS, WAGS AND PICTURES:

Ok, put on your reading glasses — our club members had an awesome

month in the performance venues. Lots of results, but at few have not

reported in. I will put them in out of order at the end of the newsletter

MORE BRAGS, WAGS & PICTURES:

From Shara Humpert and Buddy:

Only 1 brag...Buddy earned his 1st blue ribbon Q in advanced A Rally on Saturday. He chose not to sit during the first trial therefore also earned himself his first NQ in Advanced! We had a great time with the group. Thank y'all for all the help! Shara

From Candy Nettles: Hi Connie,

I am getting ready to head home from Nationals in PA. They were fun, but I am ready to get home. Joanne and DeeDee did a fabulous job!!

Joy and Dolly earned their NAME and NAJ titles last month. Candy

From Anita Northrup:

Macy --- Rally Novice Title ! Yogi---- had a good time and a 95 in Advanced, bombed out in Ex-cellent due to handler Error! Yogi is working on RAE 2.

On Behalf of Susan Lindsay:

Rosie came, she saw, and she conquered. She came to OKCOC looking for one leg in Rally Excellent A. She left with RE tacked to the end of her name.

From Connie Haschke (wearing another hat):

Bugsy — Abydos Flutterbug added RE to his name — Q’d 2 out the three runs — kept thinking he needed to flutter away some place else. I think my floater has affected him, as he does left about turns with his imaginary friend instead of me.

Puddin’ — Abydos Hasty Puddin’ added RA to her name — Q’d all three runs, including two runs after moving to Rally EX. Working 2 minutes around 3 pieces of bait helped with the sniffing, but did not totally eradicate it.

I have to brag a little bit on those of us who went to OKC for the trial. We definitely brought home our share of the goodies. Linda and Levi make an awesome team. Officially they got 2nd place twice and a very respectable 96 out of the ribbons on the other run. Unofficially she was first place after the obedience judge. Chris didn’t make it into the afternoon trial, but Quin did a wonderful job, getting 1st and 2nd on his two runs in Ral-ly Excellent. Buddy did test Shara’s metal in the first trial, but he lived to see the second trial and was so grateful that he gave a really good performance in the second trial on Saturday. Ma-cy and Yogi gave really nice performances for Anita. As Anita said, Yogi did well, but a handler error kept him from the RAE leg. Alex was the wonder kid of the group getting very nice scores in Excellent B and Advanced B Rally. He was brushing up for Cardi Nationals. He should blow them away. Pete

chose not to play — he thought the venue was a bit stressful, but he was definitely one of the cuter kids there. Rosie and Su-san did a great job, also finishing up her RE title.

OTCWF makes off with stack of ribbons at OTCOC.

Chris, Quin and Blue Ribbon on Saturday

Well Done, Becky and Alex — Good luck at the

CWCCA National Specialty later this month. Not

sure how many RAE legs Alex has, but more than

enough to stand on — he definitely put on a clinic for

us on Saturday. Good Boy, Alex.

UPCOMING EVENTS. PLEASE PUT THESE

ON YOUR CALENDAR:

Saturday April 5, 2014. 8th Annual Health Fair, 1700 Third

Street, Wichita Falls, TX. 9 am to 1 pm. OTCWF will be man-

ning stations on the K-9 Trail Walk. This will be on the paved

walk path — no burrs. If you would like to help man one of

the four stations we will be doing, please contact Susan Lindsay

at [email protected] or call her at 940-447-0871.

One station will be easily learned obedience skills — sit, down.

One will be responsible pet ownership — spaying, neutering,

ID tags, etc. One will be Getting Involved with Your Pet —

obedience training, therapy work, etc. OTCWF will be offering

a free set of classes in the drawing. WF Animal control will be

doing micro chips, so if you don’t have one, you might want to

get in line for that. PAWS for Greatness will be hosting fun

games and contests for the dogs. PETS will have a station, and

there is also a Pet Food Drive to be held in conjunction. You

may bring food donations to the fair for either cats or dogs. I

am sure cat litter wouldn’t be refused either.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 11-13, 2014. OTCWF

Spring Agility Trials. Dave will be putting up a volunteer

schedule on line. Please watch for it and fill in some blanks on

it. We always need workers. Set up will be on Thursday after-

noon probably around 3 pm. This is a great opportunity to

work for your club. Except for set up and tear down, there is

very little heavy lifting — inside the ring you have a bird’s eye

view of all the fun. Newbies, don’t be shy, if you have ques-

tions on how jumps are set or anything like that, we can hold a

mini seminar on concerns Thursday evening. As an extra plus,

you get a workers voucher for lunch and tickets for the workers

raffle.

In addition to these two “events” we also have regular board

meeting — and by the way, welcome to all the new board mem-

bers on Thursday, April 10 — will probably have a brief meet-

ing if needed, at the barn after set up for the agility trial.

Thursday, April 17, 2014, regular club meeting. Pot luck at

6:30, Meeting at 7 pm. Chris Peterson will present a program

on Wild Bird Rescue. Chris will speak on their services and

program at Wild Bird Rescue. She will also be bringing one of

the birds.

This coming Thursday, please keep Jack (Chris and Dave’s Rat

Terrier) in your thoughts and prayers. He will be undergoing

surgery to repair a luxating patella. Jack’s agility career is proba-

bly over, but now he gets to do the thrilling sport of Barn Hunt.

We are praying for skillful hands and quick recovery.

Welcome NEW MEMBERS: We have three new

members to welcome. These folks have all be active around the

building in our classes.

Heather Fulton has a Collie mix named Story and is active in

agility.

Mary Goodrich has a Pomeranian named Sheldon, and is active

in agility.

Laura Joss has 3 Golden Retrievers, and is presently in Puppy

Kindergarten with the youngest — Koda.

If you see someone you don’t know, please introduce your-

selves, and make these new members feel welcome.

We welcome you and look forward to getting to know each of

you. We hope you enjoy the club as much as we do. It is a

wonderful way to stay closer to our fur friends, and make new

human friends in the process.
