variety of ways.

WHAT’S

A Deacon

Q

Q

A

A

What is a deacon?

Deacons serve the Lord by

conducting the caring

ministry of the church-

doing the benevolence

work, visiting the sick,

being alert to the spiritual

needs of the congregation-

for the purposes of freeing

the pastoral staff to focus

on prayer and the ministry

of the Word, promoting

unity within the church,

and facilitating the spread

of the gospel.

When can I call a deacon?

Deacons are servants of the Lord,

and you can reach out to them at

anytime. Each month, Olivet has a

designated deacon on call who

can be reached at anytime, day or

night. However, other deacons are

also available when needed.

Dear Olivet Family: How many believe that America is a Christian nation? How would you answer that? I don’t believe we are. Oh, we may attempt to hold to certain Christian values – sometimes we do it valiantly. But when push comes to shove, we “cave in.” But none of that has anything to do with being a Christian. It really is about a relationship. It is interesting to hear pundits talk about the idea that since our country was once a Christian nation, we should actively work to return our governing bodies and laws back to their original intent. Some of our most renowned evangelical authors have held that America was founded as a Christian nation and flourished under the benevolent hand of divine providence, arguing further that America’s blessings will remain only as long as America is faithful to God as a nation. Now, I believe that Christian values played a significant role in our country’s founding. Yet, it was not designed to be a Christian nation. Even if we choose to believe we were founded as an explicitly Christian nation under God’s divine favor, we have clearly chosen to depart from our calling. As long as an exalted view of America’s current adherence to the Christian faith remains in force, the true nature of the challenge will not be addressed. It is absolutely true that the ideas which lie at the heart of the United States are Judeo-Christian. Yet, we are at great spiritual risk. To say that we are a Christian nation does not make you a Christian. It is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. So is America a Christian nation? No. But we could be a nation of Christians. Sincerely,

Pastor Tim

The Significant Role of Women

“To the woman He said, ‘I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you will bring forth children;

yet your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.’

Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree

about which I commanded you, saying, ‘you shall not eat from it’;

Cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.

‘Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field;

By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground,

Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.’” Genesis 3:16-19

At the onset of creation there was already a struggle to follow God. Due to the disobedience of man and

woman there were consequences. First, for the woman, is pain in child birth, then for the man, toil in the

field. More importantly and often overlooked are the promises of God attached to their consequence.

The woman shall be the vessel of new life, the man shall reap for sustained life.

Then we also see that God has given us an order or a structure. God desired to provide man with a

helper. Unlike Adam created from the dust of the earth, woman is created from the substance of man.

This is significant in the understanding of the relationship between man and woman. Both man and

woman hold equal importance to God and are of the same substance. Woman was created because there

was no other creation suitable for man to support him. The creation of woman was a unique and

intentional act of God. So was the structure and function of both man and woman. God issued some

directives, “yet your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” Life comes from the

woman, how significant a role in the plan of God. So then the role of the husband is to sustain life as the

leader and provider. Life, of course, is for the sole purpose of bringing God glory, not man.

This year when we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us celebrate the mom’s that are strong women. We

celebrate women that cared for our wounds, women that taught us about life, women that made sure

everything was going to be okay, and most significantly, women that birth us into this world. When we

do that, we are celebrating something deeper than just a great mom. We are celebrating a woman that is

obedient and faithful to the Lord. We can never be more blessed than to have had a woman in our lives

that seeks after the Lord and lives as He commands. Happy Mother’s Day. -jason

HOW ARE YOU?

OGENKI DESUKA? お元気ですか?

“I AM YOUR GOD!”

Isaiah 41:10 -14

Do not be afraid-I am with you! I am your God-let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and

help you; I will protect you and save you. "Those who are angry with you will know the shame of

defeat. Those who fight against you will die and will disappear from the earth. I am the Lord your

God; I strengthen you and tell you, "Do not be afraid; I will help you."' The Lord says, "Small and

weak as you are, Israel, don't be afraid; I will help you. I, the holy God of Israel, am the one who

saves you. 【Today’s English Version】

We are living in a fearful world today. One family in Japan decided not to come to Hawaii

in March for vacation because they were afraid of a guerrilla attack as they travel. That was

the time right after two Japanese hostages were beheaded by the terrorists in Syria. The

terrorists declared that they will target all Japanese traveling in the world from then on. “Do

not be afraid” was mentioned three times in the above passage. God declares that He is your

God who is with you. He tells us not to be afraid, and let nothing terrify us. He continues to

proclaim that He will make us strong. He promises that He will protect and save us.

Let me summarize what is being said in these verses.

The God of the Bible is your God.

Do not be afraid or let anything terrify you because God is with you.

God makes you strong.

God will help, protect and save you.

When we realize that our God is always with us to help, protect and save, we do not have to

be afraid. It is so comforting to know that our Lord is almighty, omnipotent, omniscient and

omnipresent God.

After the Easter season, we know that Christ is risen, and He is in His Kingdom, but the

Spirit of God is with us. Let us walk with God in faith without being fearful in this month of

May.

Youth Project Creative Arts Camp (YP)

Last year

Youth Project is a time during the summer for

young people to be discipled and trained for

mission service by using creative arts. The

project has 3 purposes:

1) Prepare students for a season of service

2) To enrich students expression of worship,

praise, and service to the Lord.

3) To introduce students to different artists

who have used performing arts to share

Jesus.

Youth who joined last year were

prepared in their summer mission

field. It also prepared them for

local missions and serving in

churches. Youth will learn musical

instruments, creative arts, and be

equipped to share the Gospel and

their testimony. This year, the

youth project will team up with

Acteens, and the Institute for

Human Services (IHS) to broaden

their experience of missions.

Easter Around Olivet

During the Easter Season, Olivet

celebrated with a variety of

events. A Maundy Thursday

Service was held, and church

members gathered on Good

Friday to prepare Bento Blessings

for our surrounding neighbors. On

Easter Sunday, a sunrise service

was held along with an Easter

breakfast, a service that included a

baptism, children’s choir, and

much more. Later in the week, the

Olivet Baptist Preschool had a

Breakfast with Jesus morning.

Thank you to everyone who was

able to join with us to celebrate

the risen Lord!
