Renting - “Often maligned as a product on which you ‘throw your money away,’ rentals have become a much more valued housing option,” said the Morgan Stanley authors.

Winners of the rental economy There are a few benefits to renting. Renters are much more mobile: They can move to take a better job if the opportunity arises. And, more often than not, renting is cheaper than buying. If renters are disciplined about investing those savings, they can come out with more wealth than buyers. Plus, renters don’t lose their shirts in housing busts.

We might at first assume that Voltaire was teasing when he suggests that one who answers every question was ignorant. Surely such a person must be extremely intelligent, perhaps the most intelligent person who ever lived!

That is precisely Voltaire’s point. No one could possibly be so intelligent as to have the answer to every question. Only those so ignorant that they fail to understand their own limitations would try to answer every question that anyone might ask.

Our understanding and compassion is the basis for the advice that we provide to families who must make decisions under stress. We do not take this responsibility lightly.

“A man must be very ignorant if he answers every question he is asked…”

~ Voltaire

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.

When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover high- end items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Yes! They are terrible for the environment.

Why bother? Products will still be sold at other businesses.

Maybe. We should also update our wastewater treatment plants.

No. The 2017 ban on microbead manufacturing will take care of it.

The Caledonia Library

Board would like to thank

the community for their

response to our recent

donation letter. Your

generous support will help

support our local library.

Thank you also for making

our holiday wreath sale an

immense success!

To everyone in the Lima/

Honeoye Falls area, who

so generously supported the

Lima Food Pantry. We were

overwhelmed by the giving

of so many at this Christmas

season. Thank you on behalf

of the many households that

were able to use all the

many donated items.

“The Volunteers”

To the students and

parents of Attica bus 111.

THANK YOU! For all the

Christmas gifts. P.S. the

homemade chocolate

covered pretzels were

awesome!

Mr. Jeff

Thank you to the man

ahead of me at the

checkout in Harbor

Freight last week. After

making your purchase, you

turned and handed me your

gift card with money

remaining on it, smiled, and

walked out. I was there

buying two small flashlights

as gifts for a couple of

friends who live on

disability. Your gift paid for

one of them. But more than

that, being blessed by a

stranger’s unexpected gift

made me joyful for days

afterwards! I don’t know if

you realized you also

handed me your receipt,

containing “customer

name”. I tried to find you on

the Internet, in case you

wanted your receipt, but

found nobody local by that

name. You made my day.

Thank you!

Thank you with all of my

heart to “SOMEONE WHO

CARES” for the generous

Christmas gift. I wish this

anonymous gift had a name

but you wish this to be your

secret. Your special kindness

will never be forgotten.

Thank you, Pat

Twice now, driving on

public roads , cars are

stopped by parents standing

in the road begging for

money for their kids’

cheerleading groups. Big

threatening amazon type

women stand in the middle

of the road and push money

containers into drivers’

faces, while mean spirited

hulk type men stop cars on

the other side of the road.

Come on parents, pay for

your own kids’activities

instead of harassing

motorists for money. The

town should not allow this

begging on public roads. If

cheerleaders need money,

let them work for it.

Motorists should not be

forced into giving money by

threatening parents shoving

money containers in their

faces.

Being a school bus driver I

see this a lot and it needs

to stop. Drivers--stop

making new rules for the

road. Do not stop in the

road and flag a bus to

proceed if they are turning

left when you are going

straight. YOU have the right

of way--use it. You may think

you are being helpful but

you are not. You are creating

a dangerous situation for

everyone on the road. There

are rules for a reason-so

everyone knows what the

other driver is doing. When

you do this no one knows

what’s going on. Why are

you making your own

driving rules? I will (and

have) sat for as long as it

takes for you to do what you

are supposed to be doing.

Unless you have the

authority to wave me on,

then stop doing it.

To the long-haired,

bearded, dirty fellow

cheering on the team,

GROW UP!! Let the coaches

coach!! You not only look

like an idiot, you are acting

like an idiot. Really, who are

you trying to impress? Also,

brush your teeth and

shower. You are not fooling

anyone when you smell like

a special chimney!!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Sleepless Nights DEAR DR. ROACH: How much good does it do for the body to just lie there with your eyes closed all night long when you can’t sleep? -- D.R.

ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to.

Getting a little high-intensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years.

After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This is what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? -- H.T.

ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned) for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Thank you. -- S.C.

ANSWER: Of course, the answer depends on the specific type of food, but a good rule of thumb is three to four days for cooked food. I found more exact recommendations at www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/storagetimes.html

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

www.bataviafamilydental.com

THE FUTURE OF ROOT CANAL TREATMENT? Fifteen million “root canal” pro-

cedures are performed in this country annually. These pro- cedures are undertaken when a tooth’s nerve becomes infected or the pulp (the soft material inside the tooth) becomes damaged and bacteria in the pulp chamber cause an infection or abscess. The goal is to preserve the tooth by removing the pulp, the nerve tissue, and blood vessels and replacing them with rigid natural latex produced from tree sap called “gutta percha.” Because traditional gutta percha cannot ward off residual infection and has limited rigidity, researchers have begun to test an improved version that includes nanodiamonds (tiny diamond particles from diamond mining) and antibiotics (amoxi- cillin). Future testing will reveal if the new formulation warrants wide-scale use.

Hearing “root canal” or “extraction” may send shivers down your spine. However, a smart dental patient will look logically at the pros and cons of each service. Join us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL , located at 6 Batavia City Centre , and enjoy the benefits of professional and expert dental care. We invite you to call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. Our goal is to help preserve your natural teeth for a lifetime. Let us help you smile.

P.S. It is the abscessed pulp, not the root canal treatment itself, that is painful. Most people find the root canal procedure no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservativ e treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

• If you can’t remember when your feet didn’t hurt, now is the time to give us a call.

Men that look no further than their outsides, think health an appurtenance unto life, and quarrel with their constitutions for being sick; but I that have examined the parts of man, and know upon what tender filaments that fabric hangs, do wonder that we are not always so; and considering the thousand doors that lead to death, do thank my God that we can die but once. ~Thomas Browne

When it comes to low-effort, big-impact changes, it’s hard to beat a fresh coat of paint. For

walls that feel drab, boring or outdated, new paint makes a color statement and draws attention

to architectural details. Follow these paint tips to make an instant, dramatic impression:

• Alter the dimensions of a space by painting ceilings a slightly lighter color than the walls.

• Create patterns and shapes using painter’s tape. Stripes, chevrons and ombre effects are

perfectly on-trend.

• Highlight architectural details by painting interior doors and trim in a colorful hue instead of

traditional white.

Kitchen remodels are a safe

Common causes of poor vision Vision loss is a common condition, as the World Health

Organization notes that more than 285 million people across the globe suffer some type of visual impairment. Many people can effectively counter their vision problems with prescription lenses, but others may have a more significant issue, such as low vision.

The Kellogg Eye Center defines low vision as a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. Those with low vision have some useful sight and are not considered completely blind. However, low vision can interfere with performance of daily activities, and some people with this condition are classified as “legally blind.”

Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance or problems with differentiating colors. Yet, not everyone dealing with these symptoms has low vision. Specialized testing can determine if a person has low vision or another condition.

Many conditions can impact sight and contribute to vision loss. Here’s a look at some of the more common ones.

• Glaucoma: A person with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral vision. Early symptoms, such as a subtle loss of contrast, may be unnoticeable. Eventually, glaucoma may cause tunnel vision, which occurs when a person can only see through a small window.

• Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The AMDF offers that macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the retina’s central portion, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it

contributes to one’s ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and see objects in fine detail.

• Retinal detachment: An increase of floaters or sudden flashes of light in vision may be indicative of retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. When caught promptly, a detached retina may be repaired. However, if left untreated and the detachment reaches the macula in the center of the retina, vision loss may be irreparable. The National Eye Institute says those with extreme nearsightedness, those who have had cataract surgery or those with a family history of retinal detachment are at a high risk.

• Diabetic retinopathy: Blurring or patchy vision loss can be a side effect of high blood glucose levels. Not all people with diabetes will develop vision problems, but it is common enough to warrant attention.

• Cataracts: According to The Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up the eyes’ lenses. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read or drive. Over time, cataracts may obscure vision so much that they require surgical repair.

Routine eye examinations can bring potential vision disturbances to light and facilitate faster treatment. Eye doctors also can make suggestions about lifestyle changes, including the use of optical devices to improve sight.

The Destination Is The Journey: Man Plans and God Laughs was written by Jack Slutzky of LeRoy, New York. It is Slutzky’s fourth book, following previously published works Mindscapes, Damaged, and The Good Teacher. The book has been hailed as “a book for the times,” and “enjoyable reading, creative and provocative.”

The novel begins just inside the gate to heaven. Here, seated amongst magnificent cloud-made replicas of the greatest sculptures ever produced, with the sound of a host of angels singing the “Hallelujah Chorus,” God sits brooding. He has just received news that planet Earth is rife with insanity, and that the insanity is a result of his creation... the human being.

At one time God believed that endowing his creation with free will would enable this being to become one of his crowning achievements. Alas, He is beginning to accept the fact that it is not to be. As God begins to carefully evaluate the problem, he is hoping the solution he is seeking will NOT lead him to renege on his word to Noah after the flood, when He said, “Never more will the living creation be destroyed!”

During His probing God discovers the files of four men who grew up together in a small upstate New York village: Roger Brown, Thomas Mitchell, Harlan Cooper and Peter Wells. As he reads through the files, God knows the answer to His enigma lies in the details of their lives. He decides to call upon Jesus, Satan and Mark Twain, hoping their

New book explores divine themes

ability to communicate and understand the human condition will enable them to extract from these gentlemen’s histories the information he is seeking.

The novel documents the lives of the four friends, the discourses held between them and God’s “Holy Three,” and the final report to God. One reviewer wrote: “Nietzsche and Sarte would not only be pleased, but call it a modern exercise in Existentialism.”

The Destination Is the Journey: Man Plans and God Laughs is available at Amazon.com, and www.RoseDogBookstore.com in both ebook format and printed form.

Barb Van Volkenberg is my Everyday Angel.

I have witnessed and been in awe of the wonderful care she and her husband have given her mentally handicapped brother for 30+ years. Barb was there for a good friend she lost to cancer and is now being very supportive of a friend with Alzheimer’s, whom she calls, visits and takes out often. She is also there for another friend with Parkinson’s.

I hope I never have to deal with a major illness, but if I do, I’ll be lucky to have Barb as one of my friends. I also have other friends who are there for their families and friends in need. I’m sure others do, too. Many thanks to all of these Everyday Angels!

THE BIBLE SAYS “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (II Corinthians 5:17) “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” ( John 8:32,36) “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” (Colossians 3:2,5) “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (I John 5:13)

Job hunting tips for young women - Don’t be afraid to seek

advice. Once you determine some companies you may want

to work for, don’t be afraid to seek advice from people who

already work for those companies. Even if such businesses

don’t have any current openings, you might be able to

schedule informational meetings. Treat such meetings like you

would a job interview, asking questions about the industry and

what you can do to get your foot in the door. Once such

meetings have concluded, send a hand-written thank-you note

to the person who took time out of their day to give you the

informational meeting.
