Timothy S. Williams ENGL 1102 Dr. Soliz 9/22/2014 Self-Infatuation and Education Friere has a solid position on the banking concept in the education system. His theory was based on the fact that our education system is corrupt and teachers are treating students as “banks” for their knowledge. His concepts can be used to analyze the education of Oates fictional character named Connie. Connie is a 15-year-old girl who is infatuated with her physical appearance. She is living in the 1960’s where a lot of emphasis for women was placed on looks. Imagining the educational environment for Connie is much different from our current school system. In that time period, there was miniscule priority in education for women. There was a lot of importance on keeping house and finding a husband. Timothy S. WilliamsENGL 1102Dr. Soliz9/22/2014Self-Infatuation and EducationFriere has a solid position on the banking concept in the education system. His theory was based on the fact that our education system is corrupt and teachers are treating students as banks for their knowledge. His concepts can be used to analyze the education of Oates fictional character named Connie. Connie is a 15-year-old girl who is infatuated with her physical appearance. She is living in the 1960s where a lot of emphasis for women was placed on looks.Imagining the educational environment for Connie is much different from our current school system. In that time period, there was miniscule priority in education for women. There was a lot of importance on keeping house and finding a husband. Connie, being only focused on boys and looks indicates she is probably not receiving the adequate education that she should. Being infatuated with herself sounds like a sign that she is not getting the attention of her teacher that she should be. Civil discourse functions in Connies life by allowing her to only be concerned with herself. She does appreciate her sister for being gateway for her to enjoy herself, but Connie does not follow the responsible side of her older sibling, not that she is to be obedient, however that she do what is best for her. When it comes to oppression, Connie is oppressed, however Arnold Friend is not. To a degree, Arnold is an oppressor within himself. Connie is oppressed because she is constantly nagged by her mother saying You need to be more alike your sister, she then meets Arnold who is only concerned about having what he wants, which is her. Arnold somewhat has a demonic appearance in the story as if he is not a human at all, but rather a demonic entity: this being the argument of the author (Pg.532). In Frieres context of education, comparing the education that I believe Arnold received to the education Connie is currently receiving is much different in my opinion. Connie does not comprehend the material that she is receiving. She is acting as the bank that Friere spoke on in his piece. She is being provided information and simply acting as a bank in which she is only being told what to know and its all about housekeeping and not accepting her beauty. I believe that Arnold received more, even if not much of an education due to his distinct ability to know many things he shouldnt, such as the whereabouts of her mother and sister as well as the fate of Connies deceased neighbor who raised chickens. His knowledge presents the fact that he had a good mind that school did no develop. Friere would agree with the previous statements that I have made regarding their education. Connie does not exhibit traits of an educated teenager. She is going through a rebellious phase where she is overwhelmed with her own image and how to attract men. Arnold has somewhat of an intelligent mind to the point where he knows how to manipulate people to do what he wants. Besides that fact he knew everything about Connies life, he was able force her to get into his car, even though she did not know the slightest thing about Arnold other than the fact that she say him in his car that previous night. It seems that Frieres banking concept applies to more areas of literature. Connie was subject to the banking system and fell victim to the improper techniques of the education system that seems to be failing Connies Curiosity. There is hope whoever as some education systems have succeeded in teaching some youth. The education system has not failed us completely.
