Functions of Topology Management

Construct and manage topology structure of the network. Browse

topological views of the network so as to keep track of the

operation status of the entire network.

Upload topological data of network devices through topology

auto discovery or by manually adding topology nodes.

Poll network devices and refresh their status regularly.

Monitor polling status and alarm status of network devices

through color changes of the topological nodes.

Basic Concepts

Topology is a map of the managed telecommunications network

in the NMS.

Through the topology, the users can perform configuration, alarm

and performance operations.

The topological objects that can be managed include submap,node and link.

Submap / Node / Link

Submap

Refer to a smaller network.

Node

Refer to a managed device. For a single-frame device, a node

represents the device. For a multiple-frame device, a nodeusually represents a frame in the device.

Link

Refer to a connection between devices.

How to Add a Device

Configure SNMP parameters at the NMS side and network

management workstation parameters at the device side. Get

Community/Set Community must be exactly the same at both

sides.

There are two methods to add devices to the NMS, including adddevice manually and auto device discovery.

Set Default SNMP Parameters

In creating SNMP device manually or in device auto discovery,

the system uses the default SNMP parameter profile to adapt tothe specified device in order to determine the SNMP parameters

supported by the device.

Add Device Manually

Specify the type, IP address, device name, submap, network

management protocol and parameters of the device you wantto add, and then add the device to the NMS.

Auto Topology Discovery

Search the specified IP network segment and device type

automatically, and add the discovered device into thetopological view automatically.
