Last season brought many changes to the OU Hockey landscape. OU graduated the final two players from the teams National Championship team and struggled to a 13-17-4 record. The team missed the National Tournament for just the first time since its
inaugural season in 1999-2000. Oakland featured a new look and young lineup that featured 16 new players. This season Oakland
returns their top two goal and point leaders in Kevin Kranker and Jesse Worrell. On defense Oakland returns top defenders Dennis
Capa and Jacob DeSano. While in net starter Alex Pikunas returns for his sophomore campaign.
Forwards
(Returning 8, Lost 6, 6 Newcomers) Kevin Kranker leads all returning scorers after putting up another solid season that saw him score 34 points in 34 games. Forward Jesse Worrell will once again look to contribute big points as he tallied 13 goals last season. Forwards Brett Haugh and Kyle McMahon return and look to have breakout seasons. Cody Austin was big on special teams last season scoring 6 goals including 2 shorthanded marks for Oakland. Both Joe Guenther and Jordan MacDonald will be looking to thrive under the new leadership of Jeremy Bachusz both combined for 26 points last season. Forward Brandon Johnson will push for more time after registering 4 goals last season. The Grizzlies have a deep pool of forwards coming in including Power Forward Jon Connors, who joins OU from NCAA D3 Salem State. Adam Novack from the Metro Jets is a quick smart forward who loves to shoot the puck. Hard-nosed forechecking forward Mike Simpson, promoted from DIII has soft hands and the ability to set up scoring chances. Brian Baker from Berkley High School is a hard working forward who isn’t afraid to grind away in the corners and likes to pass the puck and set up his teammates. Speedy center Matt Musallam can play a finesse game as well as a grinding game. He works real hard in the corners, and is not afraid to throw his weight around. Ryan Zuke comes to OU from Stoney Creek and is a hard-working forward with discipline in the defensive zone who likes to
set up plays on offense. Defense (Returning 6, Lost 2, Newcomers 3) OU returns six players to a deep defensive core including Dennis Capa, who leads all returning defenseman with 10 points. Jacob DeSano starts his first full season with Oakland and made an immediate impact last season on the defensive end. Brian Jacobs scoring 2 goals and 7points last season has a good shot from the point. Colin Ronayne returns with his toughness and leadership to the Grizzlies backend and James Moran who registered 3 goals and 6 assist can be used both on the blueline and upfront as needed, the final returner is Jeffery Scheuer, who will start his first full season at DI after being a late season call-up from the DIII team. New to OU is Bret Lewandowski from
Orchard Lakes St. Mary’s who is a Grinding defenseman with good instincts and ability he is smart with the puck and makes good outlet passes. Evan Chornoby is a defensive defenseman with a good sense of position who comes to
OU from Eastern Michigan. At 6’4 and 215 pounds offensive defensemen Jason Maltese provides another big body on the OU blueline, who previously played for the Wentworth Institute of Technology in the NCAA the ECAC conference. Goaltenders (Returning 2, Lost 0, Newcomers 1) OU returns two goaltenders and one talented newcomer. Alex Pikunas returns for his second season at Oakland. Pikunas appeared in 18 games last season and recorded a 3.82 GAA while eventually taking over the starters role. Trevor McDougall returns after being called up from the DIII team and is a butterfly goalie, who plays the puck like a third defensemen. McDougall appeared in three games and recorded a 5.52 GAA. New to Oakland is goaltender Matt Toter, who comes to OU from Liberty University he is an aggressive hybrid style goalie that brings the drive to win no matter the cost.

American Collegiate Hockey Association History
The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is an organization of College/University affiliated
programs, which provides structure, regulates operations and promotes the quality of collegiate ice hockey.
The ACHA is a chartered non-profit corporation and is classified as a 501 (c) (3) organization with the
Internal Revenue Service.
The ACHA was established on April 20, 1991. Fifteen charter members met during the Chicago Showcase
in Skokie, IL at the North Shore Hilton. These member teams had been playing college hockey for many
years but wished to legitimize its play by standardizing some of its procedures.
The members that created the organization were: Tom Keegan (ACHA), Al Murdoch (Iowa State), Joe
Battista (Penn State), Jim Gilmore (Ohio), Ernie Ferrari (Stanford), Howard Jenks (California-
Berkeley), Jeff Aikens (North Dakota State), Don Spencer (West Virginia), Jim Barry (Navy), Scott
Fuller (Navy), Leo Golembiewski (Arizona), Ron Starr (Depaul), Cary Adams (PCHA), Jim Warden
(PCHA), and Jack White (UCLA). The inaugural year of the ACHA was the 1991-1992 season. The goal
of the organization was to create an impartial governing body to monitor national tournaments, player
eligibility, and general oversight. Over the years, this initial goal has evolved into the organization's
mission statement: The ACHA's primary mission is to support the growth of two-year and four-year
collegiate hockey programs nationwide; The ACHA identifies standards that serve to unite and regulate
teams at the collegiate level; The ACHA shall emphasize academic performance, institutional sanction,
eligibility criteria, standards of play and opportunities for national competition. The ACHA promotes all
aspects of collegiate hockey, stressing the personal development of individual athletes as well as national
recognition for member organizations.
All ACHA teams are members of USA Hockey and joined the American Hockey Coaches Association
(AHCA) in 1999.

Did You Know…
The original ACHA logo was created by Dave Kammerdeiner of the West Virginia
University Art Department under the direction of Don Spencer for a cost of $50.
In August of 2003, the ACHA held an official contest to design a new logo, with the
winning school receiving free registration for the 2003-2004 season. The University of
Washington’s Husky Hockey team won the contest, with former graphic design intern Tom
Eykemans, designing the new version of the logo (as shown at left).
11
ACHA Membership
The ACHA has both men's and women's teams. The men's side
is made up of three divisions of teams: Division I, II, and III.
Each of the separate divisions has its own distinguishing set of
guidelines. The women's side had one division, with its
inaugural season started in 2000 with 15 teams. The ACHA
added a second Women's division for the 2006-2007 season.
By the 2001-2002 season, marking their 10th year anniversary,
the ACHA had a total of 179 teams registered with 33 teams in
Division I, 100 teams in Division II, 18 teams in Division III,
and 20 teams in the Women's Division.
By the 2002-2003 season that number grew to over 250 teams,
with Division III adding over 80 teams alone.
By the 2003-2004 season the number raised to 278 teams: 40
teams in D-I, 124 teams in D-II, 87 teams in D-III, and 27
teams in the Women's Division.
By the summer of 2007 ACHA membership had reached 360
teams (M1-50, M2-146, M3-124, W1-32, W2-8), and covers
46 of the 50 states. (Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, and Mississippi
have no teams)
Despite most teams' non-scholarship status, the caliber of
ACHA play is quite high, especially in D-I. Many large
universities that do not sponsor hockey at the NCAA level
have become powerhouses in the ACHA, such as Ohio
University, the University of Illinois and Penn State
University. Additionally, several universities that do sponsor
NCAA hockey teams also field an ACHA-affiliated team. Of
all non-varsity sports activities, the ACHA-affiliated hockey
teams generally garner the most attention at their universities,
such as Division II University of Kentucky where it is the 3rd
largest spectator sport.
