Nancy Gay, SF Chronicle: Allen spoke with team officials this week about his decision and filed the retirement paperwork with the league office one day before the Raiders were to pay him a $950,000 roster bonus, Correy confirmed. Additionally, Allen's remaining base salary of $750,000 will be wiped from the 2002 books, for a total cap savings of $1.7 million. The remaining prorated share of his 1998 signing bonus, $1.35 million, still counts against the 2002 cap, however, and the Raiders must shoulder a $1.75 million cap hit for Allen against their 2003 cap.

Bob McGinn, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Most of the bona fide No. 1 cornerbacks average more than $8 million, led by Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha at $14.296 million.

JI Halsell, FO: On its face, at the moment the contract was executed, it had a guarantee of $25.1 million. This guarantee comes in the form of a $7.5 million signing bonus, a $4.5 million year one salary guarantee, a $5.85 million year two salary guarantee, and a $7.2 million year three salary guarantee.

Additionally, the contract contains a $15.8 million option bonus in year two; this option contains a non-exercise fee, meaning if the Raiders choose to not exercise the option, Asomugha still receives the cash. So, unless the Raiders terminate this contract before 2010, Asomugha is essentially guaranteed a total of $28.6 million over 2009 and 2010, which is also the two-year total of this contract.

Here's where the contract really gets interesting: If Asomugha does not achieve the contractual performance qualifiers in year one or two, then years three through six are void, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent after 2010. The contract precludes the Raiders from franchising him. Conversely, if Asomugha achieves the qualifiers, his year three salary escalates from $2.1 million to the greater of $16.9 million or the amount of the quarterback franchise tender, and this salary is fully guaranteed. Therefore, assuming the qualifiers are achieved, over years one through three Asomugha can earn at least $45.5 million, all of which is guaranteed, and once years four through six are voided the Raiders are precluded from franchising him.

Adam Schefter, NFLN: The first two years, worth $28.5 million, are fully guaranteed. In the third year of the contract, if Oakland wants to keep Asomugha, it must pay him the average of the top five highest-paid quarterbacks (not to be confused with cornerbacks) or $16.875 million — whichever is greater.

Page 5: Oakland Cap/Contract Notes - · Web viewAdam Schefter, NFLN: The first two years, worth $28.5 million, are fully guaranteed. In the third year of the contract, if Oakland wants to

Adam Schefter, ESPN: Asomugha is scheduled to make a 100 percent guaranteed $16.59 million for the coming 2010 season. As if that contract weren't problematic enough in a difficult economy, Asomugha has an $8 million roster bonus that is due on the first day of the league year -- next Friday -- meaning that a trade would have to be agreed to in the next 10 days and consummated before the Raiders paid that bonus. On top of that, Asomugha also has a $7.83 million option bonus due on March 19. And what makes a potential trade for Oakland's Pro Bowl cornerback even more difficult is that, after his contract expires following the 2011 season, Asomugha's team is forbidden from franchising him -- or it must pay him the average of the top five quarterback salaries, which this year would be $16.4 million.

Andrew Brandt, NFP: 2009… Asomugha received $4.5 million in guaranteed salary and a signing bonus of $7.5 million… 2010… Asomugha received a $755,000 guaranteed salary and an option bonus of $15.837 million… 2011… Were the contract not to void in a couple of weeks – see below – Asomugha was to earn a 2011 salary of $16.874 million or the amount of the 2011 Franchise tag for the quarterback position, expected to be a number between $16-18 million…

The first void nullifies the remainder of the contract after the 2010 season if three conditions are met: (1) Asomugha’s performance in 2009 or 2010 does not improve from his performance in 2008 in any of the following categories: Defensive playtime; Interceptions; Interception return yards; Touchdowns on interception returns; Fumble recoveries; Fumble return yards; Touchdowns on fumble returns; Sacks. With offensive schemes avoiding him and missing a couple games this season, Asomugha did not improve in any of these categories from 2008 in either 2009 or 2010. (2) The Raiders must have exercised the option in the contract in 2010, the one for $15.837 million described above. They did. (3) Asomugha must be on the Raiders roster five days following the upcoming Super Bowl. He will (contrary to some reports that the contract has already voided). In the event Asomugha’s performance in 2009 or 2010 did improve from his performance in 2008 in any of categories above, then the contracts years 2012, 2013 and 2014 would void automatically.

Branch's roster bonus is currently guaranteed for injury only -- which means the Raiders could only dump his salary for financial or performance reasons -- but adds a "cap" guarantee if he is on the Raiders' active roster or injured reserve list for Week 1 of the 2012 season. Branch is due to earn $6 million in base salary next season, an amount that is currently guaranteed for injury. The amount will be fully guaranteed if Branch is on the roster on the third day of the league year. Branch has a $1 million roster bonus due on the third day of the 2014 league year. On the same day, $1.5 million of his $3 million base salary in 2014 will become fully guaranteed. In the fourth and final year of the contract, Branch has another $1 million roster bonus (third day of the 2015 league year) and a $5.5 million base salary. An additional $1 million is available in four $250,000 incentives tied to Branch earning Pro Bowl honors.

Mike Florio, PRT: The new deal signed by safety Tyvon Branch drops his cap number for 2013 from $10.9 million to $3.872 million… Branch receives in 2013 a guaranteed payment of $8.785 million and a base salary of $715,000, which equals the $6 million base salary and $3.5 million roster bonus Branch was due to receive under the prior deal. In 2014, the cap number increases to $7.157 million, with a $3 million base salary and a $1 million roster bonus. $1.5 million of the base salary is fully guaranteed. (Under the prior deal, the cap number would have been $5.4 million; the 2014 compensation remains the same.) Ditto for 2015; the base salary is still $5.5 million with a $1 million roster bonus. But the cap number climbs from $7.9 million under the old deal to $8.257 million under the new one.

This year, Brown's cap was expected to be $ 3.6 million ($ 3 million base, $ 600,000 bonus). Instead, Demoff negotiated Brown's base down to $ 500,000 in 1996, with a $ 3 million bonus that dropped the cap figure to $ 1.8 million. prorated remainder of a league-minimum base salary of $370,000. The source says that the rest of the guaranteed money on Curry’s contract was paid by the Seahawks in the form of a signing bonus before the trade went down. Curry, the fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft, is still due to earn $5.7 million in 2012, but with the exception of $757,000, the amount is non-guaranteed.

Aaron Wilson, Scout.com: The Oakland Raiders recently restructured the contract of linebacker Aaron Curry by lowering his salary-cap figure from $5.757 million to $992,000 for a total savings of $4.76 million, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. He received a $1.885 million signing bonus and lowered his base salary from $5.757 million to $615,000 fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap. Plus, the Raiders added four years to the deal. However, 2014, 2015 and 2016 are all voidable years. Curry's due a $3 million base salary with a $3.877 salary-cap figure in 2013 as well as a $500,000 roster bonus. He's due a $3.5 million base salary in 2014 with a $3.877 million salary-cap figure, a $3.5 million base salary and a $3.877 million salary-cap figure in 2015 and a $3.5 million base salary in 2016 with a salary-cap figure of $3.877 million.

Larry Weisman, USA Today: Oakland moved swiftly to replace Jeff George, signing former Kansas City quarterback Rich Gannon to a seven-year contract worth $ 31 million. Gannon's deal includes a $ 5 million signing bonus; the contract voids to four years and a value of $ 16 million if he plays 25% of the team's offensive plays in any of the first four years.

Don Banks, CNNSI.com: Gannon's eight-year, $68 million contract of last year? It was really a two-year commitment of $11 million, that with sustained excellence on his part this season may, repeat, may turn into a three-year, $18 million deal. But starting in 2005, by which time the Raiders quarterback will be 39, the final five years and $50 million of the contract aren't worth the paper they're written on.

Scout.com: Gannon agreed to a base salary cut from $7 million to $4.5 million this week. He can make up the $2.5 million difference through incentives. If he plays in 50 percent of Oakland's offensive plays this year, he will receive an additional $1.5 million and if he reaches 65 percent, the pot is sweetened another $1 million.

PFT: The other $3.71 million comes from escalators tied to playing time. Hall might eventually earn those amounts, but they don’t kick in until year five, driving up the annual salaries in the out years of the deals and, as a practical matter, making it more likely that the team will opt to terminate the arrangement after four or five seasons.Hall’s deal pays out $28.927 million over three years, $34.882 million over four, $43.126 million over five, and $53.659 over six.

Gay: the deal is believed to pay Hall $30 million over the first three seasons and as much as $11 million in 2008 - $10 million in the form of a guaranteed but prorated signing bonus and $1 million in base salary. That would make his cap charge for '08 less than $2 million. … Hall,

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Henderson's deal is worth $8 million. The 6-7, 335-pound former first-round pick out of Tennessee joined the Raiders on a one-year, $1.025 million deal last June…

JI Halsell, Washington Post: John Henderson was only able to secure a one-year deal worth a little more than $1 million coming off of a 2009 season in which he started 15 of the 15 games he played in for the Jaguars and had 36 tackles with 3 sacks. Henderson, who had started 120 of 124 games played for the Jaguars, was able to earn an additional $250,000 through a playtime incentive similar to one in Williams's contract.

Adam Schefter, ESPN: the team has re-signed defensive tackle John Henderson to a two-year, $8 million contract.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Henderson's two-year, $8 million extension included a $1.5 million signing bonus, with $1.5 million of his $4 million base salary guaranteed for skill and injury.

Joel Corry, NFP: Kevin Boss and John Henderson, who were also released, are receiving $2 million and $1.5 million payments, respectively, from the Raiders this year because of salary guarantees without offsets.

AP: The Raiders are hoping he can do a lot, having traded a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional second-rounder in 2013 that can become another first if Oakland makes it to the AFC title game in either of the next two years… The Raiders also renegotiated Palmer's contract, giving him a $2.5 million guaranteed deal for the rest of this season, $12.5 million with $5 million guaranteed in 2012, $13 million in 2013 and $15 million in 2014.

Paul Gutierrez, CSN Bay Area: Palmer, the No. 1 pick of the 2003 draft, had his base salary for 2012 reduced from $12.5 million to the nine-year veteran minimum of $825,000. Palmer's contract was also extended a pair of voidable years to 2015 and 2016 to distribute the remaining $11.675 million as a roster bonus and spread out the cap hit -- $2.335 million in proration each year -- over five years. As such, Palmer has a new salary cap number of $3.16 million, rather than $12.5 million, for 2012.

2012. Routt's $11.5 million base salary in 2013 is not guaranteed. Seymour and Routt's 2012 roster bonuses are treated like signing bonuses, and are prorated over the lives of both contracts.

Joel Corry, NFP: Oakland compounded their problem after the lockout by restructuring Routt’s contract to create cap room in which two voidable years were added at $11.5 million each to help with the proration. With Routt’s 2012 base salary becoming fully guaranteed on February 10th, McKenzie released him despite his contract containing a $5 million fully guaranteed fifth day of the league year 2012 roster bonus without an offset… Routt counts $10,785,334 in dead money on Oakland’s cap. Without the restructuring, his dead money would only be $3,333,334. Routt made $15 million for the one season he played under this deal.

AP: Russell's six-year, $61 million contract includes $29 million in guaranteed money and another $3 million if he reaches minimal playing time incentives. Russell would earn the $3 million bonus in 2010 if he takes 35 percent of the team's snaps this season, 45 percent in 2008 or 50 percent in 2009. If Russell were to hit all the incentives in the deal, it would be worth $68 million.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: The deal could put as much as $44 million in the quarterback's pocket in the first four years of the contract.

The key, as was the case with Johnson's contract, is that the club basically accounted for the bonuses normally inherent to such contracts by guaranteeing the base salaries for all six years, then advancing Russell money on the guarantees. Russell has a base salary of $2.976 million for this season, for instance, but was advanced $2.691 million of it when he officially signed the contract. The Raiders have the right, but not an obligation, to advance Russell $19.905 million of his guaranteed salaries for the 2008-2012 seasons by next March 2. That would come in the form of an advance of $3.3504 million from his '08 base salary (of $3.72 million), $4.0048 million from 2009 (of $4.464 million), $4.658 million from 2010 (of $5.208 million), $5.3026 million from 2011 (of $5.952 million), and $2.589 million from 2012 (of $6.697 million).

If the Raiders make that lump-sum advance next March, the base salaries from 2008-2012 are all reduced. If they don't, which isn't likely, Russell can earn a one-time incentive of $15 million by reaching just minimum performance thresholds. And if it comes to that, the base salaries for the 2008-2012 seasons are not reduced. The Raiders can further reduce Russell's base salary for 2012 by paying him a $3.4428 million "supersede signing bonus" after the last game of the 2008 season. The total guarantees in the contract at the time that it was signed were $29.019 million. If Russell achieves the not-likely-to-be-earned incentive that is included in the deal, the guarantees rise to $32.019 million.

Andrew Brandt, NFP: Following the supersede [in 2009], Russell earned a second signing bonus – as if the $20M from 2008 weren’t enough – of $3.44M. Russell also earned a $1.865M roster bonus in March as part of the superseded contract. That money was similar to the salary advance structure above, and reduced future salary numbers in 2010-2012. Further, Russell’s Paragraph 5 (salary) amount for this season has been a fully guaranteed $7.8M, approximately $460,000 every week. In total, Russell will make $13.105M for this season. The key number for 2010 is the amount of that salary that’s guaranteed, which is $3M, fully guaranteed for skill and injury. In other words, that’s what the Raiders are on the hook for next season, even if they cut bait with Russell.

Steve Corkran, Contra Costa Times: Stubblefield received a deal worth $755,000 this season that counts only $450,000 against Oakland's salary cap. He also is due $2.25 million from the 49ers for reaching incentives last season that triggered a guaranteed $1.375 million base salary and an $875,000 bonus this season. In other words, the 49ers will pay Stubblefield almost three times more than the Raiders will this season.

AP: Swilling's contract is loaded with incentives. He will receive a base salary in the neighborhood of $500,000 with the opportunity to boost his earnings easily to more than $1 million. He has an outside shot at earning $2 million.

Sam Farmer, San Jose Mercury News: Swilling walked out of Raiders training camp two days ago and told a handful of teammates he was retiring from football… he might have to reimburse the Raiders for part of the $2.5 million signing bonus, perhaps as much as $1.67 million, he received when he signed a three-year deal before last season… If Swilling officially retires, the final third of his signing bonus, about $833,000 would accelerate into this year's salary cap.

Mike Florio, PFT: the Raiders signed receiver Javon Walker to a six-year, $55 million deal with $16 million in guaranteed money… Walker received an $11 million signing bonus, and he'll get a $5 million roster bonus due in 2009, and the roster bonus is fully guaranteed against injury. So the guarantee is $16 million, presuming that the Raiders won't decide to cut Walker because: (1) he's healthy; but (2) he's not good. Also, Walker is scheduled to earn base salaries of $1 million in 2008, $4 million in 2009, $6 million in 2010, $8 million in 2012, $10 million in 2013, and $10 million in 2014.

David White, SF Chronicle: Walker's $5 million roster bonus was eliminated -- well, sort of. Instead of a bonus, he'll get his adjusted base salaries guaranteed for the next two seasons against skill, injury and cap. As far as average annual salary goes, Walker went from (potentially) $9 million a year to $3.2 million a year. He makes $2 million in base salary this season and $2.6 million next season — that accounts for all but $400,000 of his roster bonus. But be sure, he’s losing serious money with slashed base salaries. He was due $4 million this season and $6 million next season. He also will make $3.2 million in 2011 (instead of $8 million), $3.8 million in 2012 (instead of $10 million) and $4.4 million in 2013 (instead of $10 million).

Adam Caplan, FoxSports.com: The Raiders have a contract buyback option at around $3.5 million for 2011, the final year of the deal…

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Designated the team's franchise player prior to the lockout, an "exclusive" tender worth $11.312 million in base salary, Wimbley signed a five-year, $48.5 million contract extension on August 1. Wimbley received a $4.25 million signing bonus and a fully guaranteed base salary of $750,000 in 2011. Currently, $6.5 million of Wimbley's $11 million base salary is fully guaranteed, which when combined with his 2011 compensation, is slightly higher than the franchise tender. On the fifth day of the 2012 league year, the remaining $4.5 million in base salary for 2012 becomes fully guaranteed. Also on the date, Wimbley's $11 million base salary in 2013 and $2 million of his $10 million base salary in 2014 will become fully guaranteed.

Joel Corry, NFP: Wimbley is the other major dead money charge for the Raiders at $9.9 million. McKenzie attempted to renegotiate the five-year, $48.5 million contract Wimbley received last year, but didn’t have much leverage because $6.5 million of his 2012 base salary was fully guaranteed without an offset at signing. He released Wimbley on March 16th, a day before the remaining $4.5 million of his $11 million 2012 base salary, his $11 million 2013 base salary and $2 million of his 2014 base salary became fully guaranteed.

Dan Pompei, Sporting News: Wisniewski's performance enacted an incentive clause in his contract that enables him to become a free agent next month [2000].

Gary Myers, NY Daily News: The Raiders paid big-time to keep Steve Wisniewski, the best guard in the league. He signed a three-year, $7.5-million contract: $3.6 million to sign and salaries of $800,000, $1.5 million and $1.6 million.

Steve Springer, LA Times: The Raiders have signed guard Steve Wisniewski, an unrestricted free agent, to a three-year, $7.5-million contract. The five-time Pro Bowl player will receive a $3.6-million signing bonus, an $800,000 base salary this season and subsequent annual salaries of $1.3 million and $1.8 million.

The remaining three playtime levels are at 70%, 80% and 90%, which are each worth $200,000. The 1997 Heisman Trophy winner can earn a maximum of $600,000 with his interception incentives.
