head coach damon goodwinFor Damon Goodwin, 13 was

a lucky number. In his 13th season as Capital University’s head men’s basketball coach in 2006-07, he led the Crusaders to an Ohio Athletic Conference regular-season title, an OAC Tournament title and an appear-ance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 11 seasons.

For his efforts last season, Goodwin earned OAC Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his career and has es-

tablished Capital as one of the elite small college programs in not only in the region but all of NCAA Division III.

Other highlights of his tenure on the bench in Columbus include mak-ing the NCAA Tournament and winning OAC Coach of the Year honors in just his second season at Capital in 1996-97. Six years ago, he led Capital to a school-record 23 wins, while four years ago he brought the school its first OAC regular-season title in 19 seasons. He is only the second coach in school history to win more than 200 games.

Prior to becoming the Crusaders’ head coach, he served five seasons as an assistant coach at Wittenberg University. During his time there, the Tigers won five North Coast Athletic Conference titles, earned four NCAA Tournament bids and a Final Four appearance in 1994.

As a player, the St. Marys, Ohio, native earned first team All-Ohio honors at St. Marys Memorial High School in 1982, before attend-ing the University of Dayton. He helped lead the Flyers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1984 and 1985 where the eventual national champion (Georgetown and Villanova) eliminated them each season. Upon leaving Dayton, Goodwin was taken in the seventh round (147 overall) of the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. He spent the summer out west before returning that fall to begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dayton.

Goodwin’s first head coaching job was a two-year stint at Fairborn High School in Fairborn, Ohio, before joining the staff at Wittenberg.

Goodwin, who also is Capital’s assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach, resides in Hilliard, Ohio, with wife Danielle and their three children, 16-year-old Grant, 14-year-old Addison, and 7-year-old Dane.

2007-08 preview/roster/scheduleThis year marks the 100th

anniversary of the first intercollegiate men’s basketball game at Capital University. The 2007-08 Crusaders are hoping to make some history of their own, as all five starters and top nine scorers return from a team that won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles while advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Headlining the lineup for 14-year head coach Damon Goodwin is junior wing Nate Stahl. Stahl, the only underclassman named to the All-OAC First Team, led the team in scoring and was second in rebounding. He also was the nation’s best three-point shooter (50.7-percent).Along with Stahl, All-OAC honorable mention selections in senior forward Steve Kyser and junior wing Ryan Wood

also return. Kyser led the team in rebounding and was second in scoring, while Wood was third in scoring and made 47 three-pointers a year ago. The other two returning starters are seniors in guard Pat Stolly and forward Ben Gunn. Stolly topped the team in assists and steals, while Gunn set a school record and led the OAC in blocked shots.

Added depth comes from the return of bench players in senior Zach Hollingsworth, juniors Ross Niekamp, Casey Brown, Quintin Mitchell and Jake Fanning, along with a talented freshman class led by Adam Johns and D.J. Frazier.

Capital University enters its 81st season as a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2007-2008. The OAC is the nation’s third-oldest collegiate athletic conference and from its beginnings in 1902 has never wavered in its focus on the entire development of the student-athlete. The conference’s unparalleled success of all of its members on and off the playing field has made the OAC one of the nation’s finest college conferences. The OAC is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The OAC is older than the Rose Bowl, the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg College, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Case Tech’s football team won the OAC’s first conference title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culmi-nating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The OAC currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. All 10 of the OAC institutions were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes consistently have enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs. The entire CAP Family has and continues to embrace the fine athletic and academic values that make the OAC one of the finest conferences in the nation.

Capital University TodayLocated in Columbus, Ohio, Capital

University combines personal attention with a balanced liberal arts and professional studies education to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership and service . Founded in 1830, Capital is one of the oldest and largest universities affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .

Throughout Capital’s four undergraduate colleges and its four graduate programs can be found dedicated, caring faculty who are committed to teaching excellence and to treating each of Capital’s 3,700 students as individuals . The College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Management, and the Conservatory of Music offer five undergraduate degrees in more than 80 majors; while the School of Management, School of Nursing, Conservatory of Music and the Law School offer nine graduate degrees . Enhancing Capital’s traditional undergraduate programs is its Center for Lifelong Learning, which provides opportunities for quality and affordable undergraduate education to adult students .

Enriched by its metropolitan location, Capital also serves the Central Ohio community through partnerships with corporations, foundations, other educational institutions, hospitals, social service agencies, schools and arts groups . Capital alumni can be found in every state and in more than 40 countries, serving their communities and sharing their expertise, as well as their ethics and values, with those around them .

Entering its seventh year, The Capital Center is a 126,000-square-foot recreational and athletic complex that includes a 2,100-seat arena, Bernlohr Stadium, a 51,000-square-foot multipurpose forum, a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, and a multitude of offices, classrooms and hospitality areas .

The 2,100-seat arena is home to the women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs . The arena has a pair of hospitality suites, a pair of broadcast booths and a camera booth with approximately 175 chair-back stadium seats and the remaining bleacher seating .

Football and men’s and women’s soccer play on a state-of-the-art artificial surface called AstroPlay in Bernlohr Stadium . Within a brick grandstand are two observation decks, a hospitality suite and press box . The stadium includes a three-lane track around the field perimeter for fitness and recreation endeavors .

Functionality and usability are the key in the multipurpose forum, as the infield of the NCAA regulation indoor track has four courts with lines for basketball, volleyball and tennis . Suspended from the ceiling is netting that can split the area into a multitude of configurations for a variety of events, as well as a pair of hitting cages for baseball, softball and golf . Part of the forum also makes up 1,200 square feet of the fitness center with a complete cardiovascular area filled with treadmills, Stairmasters and a universal unit .

The remaining 3,800 square feet of the fitness center is a room complete with weight training equipment from Hammer Strength .

The health and sport sciences department calls The Capital Center home with a complete sports medicine and athletic training center, sports science laboratory, classrooms and more

than ample space for activity classes . The athletic department also has an office

suite with a conference room and administrative work areas .

Like many facilities, it is the small things that separate the adequate

from the memorable . The Capital Center with its towers of brick and plaster, terrazzo flooring, hand-painted tile, skylights and

enormous walls of glass not only pays

homage to the tradition and architecture of the

177-year-old university, but also provides a functional and

modern place for Capital to reach new horizons .

Capital’s vision has been simple – to have a center that is an integral part of university life, encompassing health and wellness activities, academic programs, intercollegiate athletics, intramural sports, social activities and community partnerships . The Capital Center embodies that vision and is a testament to the dedication, values and commitment to service of the entire CAP Family . To those past, present and future members of the CAP Family we only have one thing to say – Welcome Home .
