Diocese of Metuchen Takes Precautions

to Prevent Spread of COVID-19

Amid growing national concern over the spread of the coronavirus, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen has enacted measures in parishes across its four counties as a precaution. The Most Rev. James F. Checchio, Bishop of Metuchen, has issued the following directives on li-turgical practices to be observed in all parishes, institutions and organizations within the Diocese of Metuchen, effective immediately until otherwise notified: • As is practiced in so many of our parishes already, priests, deacons, and extraordinary ministers

of Holy Communion are urged to practice good hygiene, washing their hands and using anti-bacterial hand sanitizer before and after distributing Holy Communion.

• Any individual who is sick or has flu-like symptoms should not attend Mass or other Church

gatherings. Mass is broadcast on several television channels and also livestreamed on the Ca-thedral’s website: stfranciscathedral.org, so the sick can make a “spiritual communion” until they return to good health.

• The sign of peace should be exchanged without physical contact. • Distribution of the Precious Blood of Christ from the chalice is to be suspended. Furthermore,

no member of the faithful is obliged to receive the Body of Christ on the tongue; worthy, rever-ent reception by hand is preferred until otherwise notified.

“Any time there is a serious outbreak that poses a risk to public health, pastors in the Diocese of Metuchen are asked to monitor the progression of the outbreak and take any and all necessary pre-cautions in their own parishes to prevent the spread of infection,” said Anthony P. Kearns III, Esq., spokesperson and chancellor for the Diocese of Metuchen. “As Catholics, we believe that the true body and blood of our Lord, together with his soul and divinity, exist under the forms of bread and/or wine,” said Kearns. The general message from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health is that all should be prepared, but not panicked. The diocese will continue to monitor advisories from Catholic and other organizations regarding precautions on the coronavirus and share any appropri-ate information with the faithful and the parishes. “As communities across the globe respond to the Coronavirus, we stand in solidarity with them and pray for all those affected by the Coronavirus and those health workers diligently working to combat the disease,” said Kearns.

3rd Sunday of Lent

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” John 4:13

Jesus reminds us that material things, even some-thing as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more. True Joy and Peace only come when we follow Jesus; when we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered”.

Sir, Give Me This Water Notice how the faith of the Samaritan woman grows through her encounter with Jesus. She tells the people of her town to come and see Jesus. Like the Samaritan woman, is there someone YOU could bring to Jesus? Someone to hear more about the word of God? Someone looking to know the savior of the world? Then we have good news: our parish offers Inquiry sessions exploring these and other faith issues. Inquiry sessions do not assume a commitment to join the Catholic faith family. Inquiry sessions are opportunities to ask questions about God, Jesus, and the Catholic faith family. All who are not baptized, baptized into another faith denomination, or baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist and Confirmation, are invited. To learn more about personally participating in the Catholic faith, please call the Parish Office at 908-647-1075 to be put in touch with a member of the RCIA team. http://olmwarren.org/rite-of-christian-initiation-of-adults

2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Stepping Forward in Faith: Grace in Action

By now you have received a letter from Bishop Chec-chio inviting your participation in the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The diocesan ministries supported by the Appeal directly impact many of the parishioners here in Our Lady of the Mount Church. Your gift pro-vides formation opportunities for our catechists, youth and young adults. Among other important ministries, your sacrificial gift supports our renewed efforts in Evangelization & Communication. If you have yet to make your pledge to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you will have the opportuni-ty to do so next weekend, March 21/22, which has been designated as Bishop’s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal to help our parish reach its goal. If we can exceed our goal, 50% of the amount collected over goal will be returned to us in the form of a parish rebate. Just as important as our financial goal is our goal of reaching 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appre-ciated. Thank you. To date, the Development Office has received pledges

totaling $285,092.07 and payments totaling $272,502.29 from 101 parishioners.

This represents 75.4% of our $378,000.00 goal. Thank you!
