THE three ladies (Pat, Maggie,Adrienne), who asked (September

30, NRM) if I had listened to GeorgeMelly and Clinton Ford, seem to havemissed the point.

First, they write a long paragraph onMr. Melly in which they refer to hisgreat intellectual ability. I don't doubtthat he is highly educated, but whathas this to do with his singing? Mypoint is that neither he nor any othernon -American can sing the Blues.Furthermore, Mr. Melly is a whiteman and the only white man who couldreally sing Blues was the late JimmieRodgers (not the young pop singer).

To say that Clinton Ford is a goodC & W singer is utter nonsense. Thereference to so-called "rag -time" songsis completely irrelevant. The word"rag -time" is a misnomer. Real Rag-time, as played by Scott Joplin andJelly Roll Morton, is another form ofmusic-and solely American.

When Messrs. Ford and Melly singother types of songs, they are asoriginal as anyone. As to Ottilie Pat-terson, no one can deny she modelledherself on Bessie Smith, and that Bessieis far better.-R. JONES, 39 St.Leonards Avenue, Stafford.

THE POWER OF A BROADCASTDISC JOCKEY NEAL ARDEN has15 said the power of broadcasting onsales of records is tremendous. A hand-ful of American stars are doing verywell with this power.

Well, it's a pity that more considera-tion isn't shown for the British artistswho have done so much for thiscountry in the past.

Maybe Mr. Arden would give VeraLynn's "Adios, My Love " a spin be-cause it is one of her best. It wasplayed on "Family Favourites" recentlywhen Jean Metcalfe said " Welcomeback, Vera." Though Vera has notbeen played often, it does not meanshe has not been requested. I havesent many requests, so have my friends. . . and still it is not played.

Lonnie Donegan's " Does YourChewing Gum " proves the power ofbroadcasting. After two years, andsome plugging, it is at No. 5 in theAmerican charts.-F. J. BANBROOK,4 Mount Street, London, W.1.

JACKSON ? BOO !T HAVE listened to JACK JACK-

SON'S". disc programmes for months.and I have come to the conclusionthat he is the biggest hypocrite on theair.

He consistently runs down rock 'n'roil, even though he makes his livingfrom it, and he renders it almost im-possible for one to hear a record owingto his constant jokes and silly noiseswhich he makes while the disc is play-ing. He should remember that theprogrammes are for people to hearrecords.

I also noted that there was not asingle beat disc that he liked on JukeBox Jury; his remarks on the Crickets'record being somewhat insulting.

In my opinion, he should either cutout the quips, or else compere showsin which only his type of music isbeing played.

SINGING GROUPSLIKE Editor Jimmy Watson, I was

quite a fan of the Ink Spots-andtheir latest Ace of Hearts album bringsback many happy memories. I pre-sume this group is the ORIGINAL InkSpots, as they broke up some time agoand various members formed their owngroups.

All right, so they are corny com-pared with the ultra -modern sound ofthe Hi-Lo's, etc., but I think there is

a very good chance that vocal groupswithout girlie choirs can come back.I remember seeing, some months ago,the Mills Brothers on a Perry Comoshow, and to me this is a group some-where between the Ink Spots and theFreshmen. I'd like to see them in thecharts again.

Yet, in the LP Top Ten, we sec thestraightforward singing of the GeorgeMitchell Singers doing great guns, withrefreshing. no -gimmicky singing.-JOHNWATERFIELD, 6 Wen:bury ParkRoad, Plymouth, Devon.

LEAVE B. H. ALONET WAS mad when I heard that Mike

Berry and the Outlaws have cashedin on a song about the late great BuddyHolly. There has already been two re-cords made in tribute of B.H. in whichthe record company singers have donewell (money wise).

If a record company must pay tributeto B..H. why shouldn't they releaseB.H's. records where the royalties will besent to his wife and mother.

TOO GOOD TONYTAM surprised that TONY NEWLEY

has not made the charts with hislatest release, " What Kind of Fool AmI ? " which was released some littletime ago. Tony is a great artist, as his" Stop the World, I Want to Get Off "demonstrates, and I honestly think thatthis latest disc of his is his best.

Apart from the fact that " WhatKind of Fool " was released too soonafter " Be -Boni," I think the recordmust be too good for the Top Twenty,if I may use such a cliché. Tony'ssinging is excellent, while the backingis superb and the song, I think, is thebest from the show. A SIGNIFICANTEVERLY DISC

THE LATEST EVERLYBROTHERS' disc to make the

charts here-" Muskrat," backed by" Don't Blame Me "-has an unusual,and significant, history.

Warner Brothers, in America, broughtit out as a "Plus Two " oldiesrecord, their first attempt to build upthe alanning decline in the sales ofsingles in America.

Featured on the Everly disc were ex-tracts from two previous Don and Philhits, " Ebony Eyes" and " Walk RightBack."

Along with the issue came a statementfrom Warner Bros. on the subject ofthe sales decline. As far as Warnersknow, only one record has sold over amillion copies, despite claims made byrecord companies.

PRESLEYAnd the big seller ? " Are You

Lonesome Tonight ?" by ElvisPresley.But despite a longer pistoning time

on the American Everly Brothers' issue,it is taking its time about getting to theTop Ten.

" Muskrat," a fast -paced number, isthe side that is selling the disc overhere, but in the U.S. " Don't BlameMe" is forging ahead - although nottoo quickly.

Its present position in the Cashboxchart is No. 47.

" Muskrat " appeared a week agobriefly at No. 95 in Cashbox's Top 100and then disappeared.

Warner Brothers' records inBritain told the NRM that therewas no chance of the "Plus TwoOldies" idea being extended thisside of the Atlantic because " theset-up regarding single play discs

doesn't apply over here."Which means that sales are healthy.(Incidentally, don't get the idea that

the American disc scene is flopping.There is still a lot of business and a lotof records being sold. One only has toglance at the long playing album sceneto realise this).

The session that produced " Muskrat"and "Don't Blame Me "-two contrast-ing sides if ever there were any-be-came the talking point of Nashvillewhere, naturally, it was made.

This was because all the men on thesession were Nashville's top musicians.Six big name guitarists were present, in-cluding Chet Atkins, who is responsiblefor the introduction to " Don't BlameMe."

TOUR ?As already reported the proposed 14 -

day tour of this country by the Berl) s,set for October, has been cancelled be-cause of the Duo's other commitments.

But the latest news is that more plansare being made to get them to tour be-fore the end of this year.

Don and Phil are at present touringAustralia after playing a series of one-nighters in New Zealand.

THE VENTURES

WOODEN ARTISTSWHY are some British disc -buyers so

wooden? If an artist gets a recordin the Top Twenty these people auto-matically and unfailingly think that everyrecord made by the artist is great.Granted that there are a few exceptions(e.g. the Allisons, the Drifters, theVentures) but it is more often than notthat this rule applies.

Take John Leyton for example, he isthe most talked of artist in show businessjust at present all because "JohnnyRemember Me" is where it is and I'dbet any odds that "Wild Wind" will dojust as well but what about his otherrecords sucfh as "The Girl On The FloorAbove". This, in my opinion, was betterthan the two said records but the onlyreason it never got anywhere was simplythat nobody knew the name of "JothnLeyton".

Of course this does not apply to JohnLeyton. Another good example is BillyFury's "Jealousy" which is only in thecharts because of his "Halfway toParadise" fame.

I think his "Jealousy" is the worstrecord he has made to date and itdoesn't reach anywhere near the standardof, say, "A Thousand Stars," whichwasn't a tremendous hit.-BRIAN WIL-LIAMS, 34 14th Avenue, Hull.

ADAM'S NEW FILM OPENED LAST WEEK IN LONDON PROVINCES SOON

ADAM FAITH AND THE LOCHNESS MONSTER

ADAM FAITH is sitting on abed with a chick, listening to

himself on the radio singing " TheTime Has Come."

All the way through he makesdepreciating remarks about the qualityof the singing voice. "Fancy makingthousands with a voice like that," hesays.

Which should give you some ideaof the level of his new film, " Whata Whopper," a British comedy thatruns along the same lines as otherBritish comedies-a bit of slapstick,a lot of bawdyness, a lot of runningin and out of bedrooms and-as thisconcerns the Loch Ness monster-over the Scottish moors.

It features Mr. F. and a cast of37 credited. It also follows that theacting demands are not too heavy.

Adam sings two songs in " Whata Whopper "-the other one is thetitle tune sung over the credit titles.Both are by Johnny Worth and both,to these ears, appear below the usualWorth standard.

ELVIS PRESLEY'S latest film - forParamount-" Blue HawaiiV' whereElvis plays the part of a beach boyalong Hawaii's famous beaches,which should open in London inNovember.

He is scheduled to sing 14 songsin the film, produced by Hal Wallis.

Picture below should revive mem-ories. Elvis is back in uniform again.He returns from a two-year hitch inthe U.S. Army in the film to startfeuding with his socialite mother(played by Angela Lansbury), whoseideas and social ambitions are out oftune with Elvis's own plans.

In both these stills from " BlueHawaii " Elvis is seen with his lead-ing lady, JOAN BLACKMAN-herfirst real starring part, although shehas made four films.

ADAM'SPICS

Apparently "The Time Has Come"will be released by Parlophone,although no date has been set. Thecompany is not sure, either, whetherit will be an "A" side of a " B " side.

Without calling Adam's performancethe greatest thing to hit the screen, Ido note a certain confidence from Adamthat was completely lacking in " BeatGirl " (his first film) and " Never LetGo " (where he coasted in the shadeof a major pertormance from PeterSellers).

NO COMPLAINTFaith fans shouldn't complain. Their

idol is seen long and often, engagesskilfully in a few clinches with Frenchstarlet Marie France, appears in a kilt,wears a false beard, sings, and attemptsan atrocious (intentional) Scottishaccent.

Sidney James makes a characteristicappearance, Carole Lesley looks verycharming, and comedian Freddie Fria -ton carries his drunk act-which madehis name in variety - throughout thewhole film.

Spike Milligan is an excellent weirdlyfantastic tramp, and Charles Hawtreyplays the part that Charles Hawtreyplays well.

In short, no surprises in " What aWhopper." But when it goes ongeneral release in a couple of weeks Ipredict the fans will turn out in force.

Story concerns Adam, who Is awriter with a book about the LochNess monster which he cannot getpublished. So he decides to fake amonster to get it on the market. Hegets involved with an irate fatherchasing an eloping couple, salmonsmugglers, and Scottish jokes . andthe Loch Ness monster.

Lovers of the "gaspipe" style ofclarinet playing, reported to havestemmed originally from the wildChicago days, will like this Counterpointalbum now released in this country.With a mixed personnel composed oftrumpeter Ruby Braff who is not at hisbest, Vic Dickenson with a much milderapproach and the old reliable "Eel" -man, Bud Freeman on tenor, Pee Weewails and croaks his way through a wellchosen library of numbers.

It is a pity that the final result isn'tparticularly rewarding.

A better example of the ebullient PeeWee is to be found here, with firm andincisive trumpet by Buck Clayton and athree -handed rhythm which moves alongwith force and bite.

Happily, Pee Wee himself has moreItlues and Blues -styled pieces to buildon and manages to remind us of the olddays when the Blues was at home inChicago. He and Buck match well andmake interesting music. A swinging,exciting album with Windy City over-tones and a good deal of moving music.

BOB CROSBY AND THE BOBCATSFidgety Feet Pennies from Heaven Magnolia Street Parade Maryland,My Maryland. CAPITOL EAP 1-20112.

Although this EP is from a muchlater period than the famous Bobcatsessions, they can't be described as animprovement on the old pattern. Themarches, on the reverse side, are pedanticand heavy even though a great deal ofthe playing in the hands of whiteDixielanders like Charlie Teagarden,Warren Smith, Matty Matlock, EddieMiller and company, is competentenough.

The date is actually 1951, and the realCrosby sessions which caused so muchfurore were around the middle to late'thirties. Many of Crosby's old sides -men are present but the band is a bigone and the use of the old title "Bob-cats" is completely misleading.

Pleasant white modern -voiced Dixie-land, but nothing outstanding.

OLE MAN RIVERBOB WALLIS

The Bad Young Man from St. Tropaz Ole Man River Knocked 'Em in theOld Kent Road. PYE NJE 1079.

Typical "Trad" music, and very littleimagination to boot.

The banging banjo, the rather inferiorsinging and the general air of "let ushit it hard and get it over with" makethis just another of those inferior Tradofferings which may or may not appealto the fanatics of this current craze,but which certainly do not appeal to me.

indeed some of his ballads have atouch about them which brings tomind the songwriters of the Broad-way stage of the last generation. Itis therefore hardly surprising that on

the notes Golson tells how his orig-inal piece "Out Of The Past " repre-sents his attempt to write somethingin that style.

"Originally I had planned to doan old show tune, maybe a Rodgersand Hart; but later I decided insteadto write something that would bereminiscent of that type of tune, inwhich I could try to get that kindof sound."

Naturally enough, Golson has avery academic instrumental style,and may even be said to play "arran-ger's saxophone," which is notmeant as a disparagement. His soloon " Out Of The Past," for instance,meticulously observes every move-ment of the harmonies he himselfhas concocted, and the approachsounds like a compromise betweenDon Byas and Lucky Thompson,With the tither -figure of Hnwlainssomewhere in the background.

This finely -balanced album wasrecorded in November, 1957,which perhaps underlines the factthat very little new has happenedin modern jazz over the last fewyears, because nothing on any ofthe five tracks can be said to havedated in any way.

Garland is one of the most prolificof pianists, appearing all over theplace without giving the impressionthat he has given us everything hehas to say. His ballad interpretationranks among the best in its field,and I've Got It Bad proves this,although the remarks on the sleevenotes credited to Garland, where hesuggests what it takes to interpret atune of this kind, seem to me to puthim on very dangerous ground in-deed. It is all very well to experiencepersonally what is expressed in thelyric but there are certain songswhere this is quite impossible.

Garland has the knack of playingmodern changes in a way whichmakes them sound uncomplicatedwithout being naive. His solo on" Birks Works is one of the bestthings on the album, and his super-lative technical control is there tosee on " Hallelujah."

A further instalment of theescapade in which Harry James at-tempts to pass himself off as CountBasie. On the face of it a surprisingattempt, because we all wrote Jamesoff years ago, and his new recordingsare surprisingly good so long as weremember that they are frank andunashamed imitations of Basle.

One whole side of this issue isgiven up to the writing of Basieorchestrator Ernie Wilkins, and it ishardly surprising, therefore, that it isclosest to the Baste ensemble powerand cohesion. There are certain brasspassages on " Sweet's Tooth" wherethe ensemble really does sound likeBasie, but the thing which gives itall away is James's own trumpet solowhich presumably was meant toevoke thoughts of Harry Edison,which it doesn't.

While the full sound of the orches-tra is very effective, and has theadded advantage of sounding highlyfamiliar, it is in its solo strengththe James band fails to reach thehigh standards it has set itself. It allpoints the difficulty and the dangerof trying to mould one's style onthat of an accepted master. Nomatter how good you get, theoriginal is always going to bebetter, and frankly, polished andpleasant as this record is, nobodycould honestly recommend it in pre-ference to the many Basie albumsalready on sale.

The two Gigi Gryce themes, "Re-union " and "Hymn To TheOrient," have not quite the sophisti-cation of Golson's compositions, ofwhich " Blues On Down " is one ofthe simpler examples. "NamelyYou" will be remembered as one ofthe torch songs from " L'il Abner."Jay Jay Johnson seems oppressed byhis own technique, and KennyDorhan sounds much freer and moreimaginative. The rhythm section isperfect throughout, and includesWynton Kelly, Max Roach and PaulChambers.

I remember reading something acouple of years ago about the wayin which trumpeter Donald Byrd hadbeen over -recorded. Since then, theflood of Byrd albums has dried up.and I take is this appearance withthe Garland Quintet is a legacy ofthose hectic days when Byrd seemedto hop from one session to another.

The front line is completed byJohn Coltrane, playing with atypical stridency which never quitegets out of hand. His power on" Hallelujah " is quite frightening,and I prefer his solo on " Birk'sWorks,- which is one of the bestexamples of the month of controlled,adventurous blues playing. It is thetrack from which the album takesits title which possesses the greatestdepth.

It is not just another attempt tocash in on the "soul" gimmick, buta beautiful evocation of the blues ata contemplative tempo, with Garlandsurpassing himself in his long butnever boring solo. On the face of it

anniversary of the old pop maestro.Whiteman used many famous jazz

names in his time - Bix, Trumbaer,Teagarden, Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti-besides the hoary old crooner, BingCrosby. Bing. cheerfully reunited withhis old buddies Harry Barris and AlRinker, thoroughly enjoys a new andzestful version of the Rhythm Boys'classic, "Mississippi Mud".

Jack Teagarden displays his Texastrombone to good advantage on thingslike "Basin Street" (as if you hadn'tguessed), "Lover " and " Lazy Riverwhile old-timer Johnny Mercer partlysings "Jeepers Creepers" and "ChristmasNight in Harlem".

Joe Venuti is back again on a lively"How High the Moon", but sorelymisses his onetime partner, the lateEddie Lang, on guitar. Nevertheless, thebeat is there and quite infectious, too.

Hoagy Carmichael does his own"Washboard Blues" and, all in all, thisis a fitting tribute to a genial and famousAmerican commercial bandleader. ButI don't think it has very much to offerthe jazz fraternity.

From the Temperance Seven, freshfrom the Hit Parade, comes the fournumbers which have already had goodsales as singles. They just cannot beunknown to any reader who has a radioor a neighbour who likes the currentpops and Trad fad.

But, in case you are fortunate in thisrespect, let me say, that the TemperanceSeven have made a rather successfulgimmick out of the 'Twenties with someoldtime dance music. I used to listento this stuff churned out nightly by theSavoy Orpheans and other gay 20'sbands.

These boys have certainly studied themedium and recreate it with a faithful-ness, plus an underlying wit, both de-lightful to hear. To imagine that thiskind of music has made inroads intothe Rock -ridden Top Ten beggarsimagination - and pleases me beyondmeasure.

TIMEIN recent months, 1 have noticed a

tendency for a number of jazzclubs to look more like art galleries.The reason is the growing competi-tion in band posters.

The backroom boys of the tradbusiness are falling over themselves toproduce slick posters and leaflets aspart of the publicity build-up whichsurrounds the big boom -struck bands.

I suppose it all really started withAcker. Publicity man Peter Leslie dida fine job building the Edwardian auraaround the Bilk band. His latest effortis a brochure illustrated with photo-graphs depicting Mr. A.B. in varioustypes of headdress. Some of Leslie'sposter designs for Bilk Festival Hallconcerts have been most ingenious, withrichly embellished seventeenth centuryphraseology.

A more modern approach to adver-tising is favoured by some bands.Among the best poster designs on dis-

Re: John Leyton, I said the tele-vision exposures would help morethan somewhat but that the qualityof his first disc would get there. Itdid-as has already the follow-up,"wild Wind".

BIGGIENow then, make receptive with the

ears. Shane Fenton, with his first disc,is all set for a chart appearance. The 'A'side is "I'm A Moody Guy", a fine com-position by Jerry Lordan, and the 'B' isthe old "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue".I believe the Americans would call this a"back-to-back biggie".

Lined up with me as fans of Fentonare "Saturday Club" producer JimmyGrant, compere Brian Matthew, JerryLordan and Eden Kane, who rates themas the best -dressed, best -presented grouparound.

Shane was born Bernard Jewry, inMansfield, Notts. When he formed hisgroup, they had months of struggling,taking two quid a week each out of thekitty-if they were lucky.

He told me: "We looked on music asa job not as a pastime. At home, werehearsed three hours a day, taping yournumbers so we could see where we gowrong.

"Then, early this year, the hardwork paid off. We found we couldcollect £15 a week each and used the

money over to pay for equipmentand clothing.

"Now we have outfits and gearworth £1,500. Myself, I've got awardrobe of 20 suits, ranging fromgreen to gold lame and leopardskin."What's more, he often wears two

suits at a time on stage so that he cannip off one side in blue and re -appearthe other side seconds later in be-spangled gold.

If this sounds like a knock -about act,forget it. The sound is the thing. Therepertoire ranges from rock to "Mary'sBoy Child''. But it IS a colourful act,carefully staged and laced with comedy.In a word: entertainment.

February this year brought the bigbreak. They auditioned for " SaturdayClub" and appeared on the highly -ratedshow a month later. Since then they havebeen on "Easy Beat" and "Music WithA Beat", packing in several months'broadcasting experience before makingthat first record.

FLIPPEDThe disc came about because of the

enthusiasm of pianist Tommy Sandersonwho introduced them to Parlophone'sRon Richards,

Jerry Lordan, too. flipped-and wrote"Moody Guy" specially for them . . .a distinct accolade from such a busywriter.

The disc -boosting begins on Saturdaythis week. The group appear on "ThankYour Lucky Stars", as proteges of

Helen Shapiro, and they're on "SaturdayClub" in the morning.

Afterwards comes dates on ScottishTV and Ulster TV, with a one-nightertour of Scotland starting on October 30.

They have a flourishing fan -club, a lotof fan -mail and boundless enthusiasmfor perfection.

And a touch of sadness. Just beforehe left school, Shane became friendlywith a Nottingham singer, JohnnyTheakstone and his group. The Tremo-los. Johnny became ill and Shane stoodin for him.

Then Johnny died, at 17. And Shane,then Bernard, agreed to stay permanentlywith the group, using the name ShaneFenton which was devised by Johnnyjust before he died.

On Tuesday, this week, Shanehosted a party for Press and showfolk to introliuce the group. And onthe guest -list were Mr. and Mrs.Theakstone, Johnny's parents.Line-up of the Fentones? Tony

Hinchliffe (drums), Jerry Wilcox (leadguitar), " Bonney " (bass guitar), MickEyre (rhythm). They've a co-operative

outfit, each kicking in with presentationideas.

Comparisons are inevitable - hutreally unnecessary in this case. Just letme say that Shane regards Louis Primaas his favourite singer-" He's full ofexpression . . . and so happy."

That's it, then. My next tip for theBritish big-time.

BEAT SINGERS IN THE LIST. THAT IS A SUMMARY OF THE NAMESFOR THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE, PRESENTED BYBERNARD DELFONT, AT THE PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE,LONDON, W., ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6.

The current Top Twenty lists arealmost ignored in a line-up whichfeatures rather less than half theusual number of names.

Explaining the difference. BernardDelfont told the NRM: "This yearwe plan to give each artist a realchance to get across his or her per-sonality in their own acts. There willbe production numbers at the startof each half and in the finale, butthe rest will be straight acts with noattempt to be a spectacular."

THREE BANDSOn the pop side, Shirley Bassey is

joined by Sammy Davis Jnr. (in a featurewith dancer Lionel Blair), the McGuireSisters (who will then be appearing in"Talk Of The Town"), Nina andFrederik (accompanied by the MalcolmMitchell Trio), Scottish star AndyStewart and Frankie Vaughan.

The trad feature lines up Kenny Balland his Jazzmen, Acker Bilk and theParamount Jazz Band and the Temper-ance Seven.

Mr. Delfont said: "I wouldn't sayrock 'n' roll is out. But we've hadrockers in the past years and we want,this time, to represent the craze of themoment, which is undoubtedly tradjazz."

Comedy is to come from: Jack Benny,George Burns, the Crazy Gang, CharlieDrake, Bruce Forsyth, Arthur Haynes,Morecambe and Wise.

Maurice Chevalier, currently filmingin Britain, is on the list, together withMax Bygraves and the "Do Re Mi"company, which includes EMI singerSteve Arlen.

Specialities are by the Ballet Triunes,the Baranton Sisters (currently at theLondon Palladium), La Compagnie 1)eMarottes and Ugo Garrido.

The show is to be staged by RobertNesbitt, and Harold Collins, veteranshow conductor, is musical director.

All the programme will be televisedby ATV on the following Sunday,November 12, and the BBC radio willcarry an edited one -hour excerpt.

Sammy Davis inc. has obtainedspecial leave from a Las Vegas engage-ment. He will virtually come straight offstage at the Royal Performance and flystraight back to America-a round tripof 10.000 miles for just a few minutes.

In the next few weeks, Lionel Blairwill fly to Las Vegas for rehearsals withSammy Davis.

All three trad groups are new to RoyalPerformances as are Shirley Bassey,George Burns, Arthur Haynes, theMcGuires, Morecambe and Wise, Ninaand Frederik, Andy Stewart and all fourspeciality acts.

Disappointment will certainly be feltin pop music circles that some of theyounger disc stars are not represented-names such as Helen Shapiro, Billy Fury,Eden Kane, John Leyton. Or possiblyTony Newley.

But satisfaction will be felt that thoseselected will have a real chance to putacross their personalities in longerroutines than in the past.

The Royal Variety Performance willbe attended by Queen Elizabeth theQueen Mother, and is in aid of theVariety Artistes Benevolent Fund, or-ganised and run by Arthur Scott. In thepast 31 shows, about (200,000 has beenraised.

FRANKIE GETS

came the first of the strongPhiladelphia rock 'n' roll stargroup to leave the jurisdiction ofthe Orphans' Court in the City.

Gerry Brown's first Fontana disc,"01' Man Mose "I" I'm just a PoorBachelor " (H.334) is now released.Previously I announced the " B " sidetitle as " Driftin' Along." It seemsGerry wasn't too sure of the title and

Fontana staff chief, Jack Baverstock,hummed and whistled the tune over the'phone to over 15 publishers withoutsuccess.

In desperation, Jack made plans tosubstitute another tune on the discwhen he received a telegram from Gerrysaying. " Sorry, dad. Wrong title. Try' I'm Just a Poor Bachelor '!"

PLANSTerry Lightfoot's plans for Christmas

include a rather unusual television pro-gramme. He and the band will takepart in A.B.C. TV's "Christmas on theOther Man's Farm." The programmewill be pre-recorded on December 18thfor transmission on Christmas Eve, andwill emanate from Mossborough HallFarm, near St. Helens, Lancs. ClintonFord will be among the guests. TheLightfoot band will be heard on"Saturday Club" on October 21st.

SHADOWS BOMBSHELLTHIS week's bombshell news from the CLIFF RICHARD camp is

that drummer TONY MEEHAN has left The Shadows, as fromSunday last. Taking over is 21 -year -old Londoner BRIAN BENNETT,formerly with The Wildcats and Krew Kats.

Tony's resignation was accepted immediately to allow time for his successorto play himself in with the group before Cliff's tour of Australia and Scan-dinavia starts on October 14.

Reason given for Tony's departure is that he wants to concentrate onextensive studies in musical theory, and in drumming, under his coach, MaxAbrams.

Tony told the NRM : " I havebeen considering this move for sometime, because constant touring vir-tually cuts out any chance of mykeeping up my studies.

" My ambition is to arrange andto gain every kind of experience asa playing drummer. Now I canreally get down to the job."..At EMI, Columbia executiveNORRIE PARAMOR said : " I havethe highest regard for Tony's devo-tion to music. He is a very fineyoung drummer-perhaps the finestI have come upon.

" I understand about his decisionnot to tour because I had to make

the same sort of decision a fewyears ago.

GOLD DISCS FROM BINGON Monday, BING CROSBY is

presenting LONNIE DONEGANwith two gold discs-each represent-ing the sale of over one millionrecords-at Shepperton Film Studios.

And Bing is the artist who has soldmore records than anyone else in theworld.

Lonnie already has a gold disc for" My Old Man's a Dustman," and hasqualified for another from recent sales-mostly in America-of " Does YourChewing Gum Lose Its Flavour."

" Chewing Gum " had about 250,000sales when first released in Britain inFebruary, 1959, but made little impres-sion on the American market until sixmonths ago.

Lonnie's other gold disc for presen-tation on Monday is something of amystery. It is for " Rock Island Line,"his FIRST big hit in 1956. He leftDecca then for Pye before the millionmark was reached, and was thereforeconsidered to be ineligible.

Now, after five years, the positionhas been cleared up. And Doneganbecomes the first British artist to holdthree Gold Discs and the first to receivetwo at the same time.

It also represents a nice gesture byDecca Records for their co-operation totheir former artist.

IVORY JOE HUNTERsays of rock 'n' roil: " I've beenplaying rock for 20 years and sohave lots of other coloured artists.Maybe it hasn't always been calledthat. I think the process can berepeated.

Like in his first hit "Mar-cheta" Karl employs generoususe of his falsetto voice. Andit stands an even better chancebecause "Mexicali Rose" is abetter number.

Flip is written by Karl him-self and he extolls the virtuesof his native land in a mostun-Celtic manner. Generaleffect is akin to Gene Autrysinging "Loch Lomond".

Its novelty and strong per-formance make it a strong flip -side.

TROY SHONDELL ThisTime; Girl After Girl (LondonHLG 9432)

TROY is newto Britain.

But he's thecentre of a fan-tastic publicitycampaign in theStates which

has rocketed him up the charts-to the tune of 31 places inone week.

His chances here? Brightenough for a Top Twenty Tip.It is an original sort of num-ber; neat lyrics ; sound, moodybacking and Troy sings withimmense feeling. The songkinda grows on you - andshould receive the sort of plug-ging which will make it one ofthe family.

I'm not so struck on the 'B'side, though again Troy estab-lishes a warmth and ease ofperformance which surely willregister. Nothing wild abouthim but an underlying depth.

TEDDY RANDAZZO Let The Sun-shine In; Broken Bell (HMV POP925)

WHAT a contrast !The main side

builds, builds, buildsto a shouting climaxlike a spirtual Teddybacked by a hard,shouting vocal group.

He growls and moans like RayCharles and Bobby Parker, but gener-ally gets his feeling-if not all the words-across. Apart from an instrumentalbreak involving a twanging guitar whichsounds pretty disastrous, this is a well -made track.

Turn this disc over, however, and weget a prim and proper Mr. Randazzoleaning back on a set of shimmeringstrings and turning out a normal loveballad.

What's more, he had a hand in writingboth sides.

BOBBY DARIN You Must HaveBeen A Beautiful Baby; SorrowTomorrow (London HLK 9429)

THE first couple ofchoruses have

Bobby sounding deli-berately vaudevillianand most unlikeBobby Darin. It isamazing that Bobby

has worked so hard to develop hisstyle and then throws it away likethis.

Disappointing.Sorrow " is not a song with any

particular distinction to it either. All inall a not very good release from Bobby.

Almost as if he didn't care. . .

NICE to see anotherBritish record

making it so big inthe States. YoungHayley, youngest ofthe John Mills -headedtheatrical family,

made this originally for Walt Dis-ney's recording company. It is alreadyhigh, high in the States.

Delayed -action release in this countryprobably won't harm it. It is a rocksong which Hayley delivers with quaitea retained English accent in parts,though she does an overall darned goodjob of it, especially with the jangle -rhythm backing.

Perhaps it is better to say little aboutthe flip. She's more -than -slightly out oftune and delivers w th a harassed air.And the song makes her sound evenyounger than she really is. For the topside . . . Four Stars.

THE CORONA KIDS The Big ShipSails On The Alley -Alley -0; Nid-Nid-Noddin' (Philips PB 1185)

"THE BIG SHIP. . ." comes from

the Shelagh Delaneymovie "A Taste OfHoney", in which theCorona Kids sing as abackground chant.

None of them will be able to seethe film on account of it having an"X" certificate!

It is tuneful, happy and pushed alongby the Ivor ttaymonde Group. And itis a few degrees above nursery rhymestatus. Flip is best described as amarching -tune for kiddie-winkies, with asubtly simple arrangement.

NASAL - STYLEsinger Bobby has

his roots in Nashville.So it follows that it isa typical sentimentaltwangy Countryballad. A soft sell

Much the same formula on the flipwith trombones speaking out on thetheme. A fine big brass sound. Andevery bit as good as the 'A' side.

THE STACCATOS Topaz; MainLine (Parlophone R 4828)

CAN'T see a lot ofhope for this

debut by the instru-mental group, TheStaccatos. They playwell enough on bothsides; but they are

handicapped by basic weaknesses inthe tunes.

"Topaz" is easily the stronger side.It has a neat percussive introductionthen a powerful guitar fighting offstrong drumnastics. The real trouble isthat there is so much of this sort ofthing about - and most of it is better.

"Main Line" just doesn't have any-thing whistleable about it.

OLIVER REED Lonely For A Girl;The Wild One (Decca F 11390)

An engagingwhich featuresmiddle.

He wakens up somewhat however onthe flipside, "The Wild One" which isbrighter in tempo.

Oliver is certainly at the other endof the spectrum from the ranting ravingrockers.

Bill Dana'sadopts acharacter.

In this instance Dana is Jose asAmerica's first astronaut. Sample joke:What will you do during the long lonesolitary hours in space? - I plan to cryat lot.

THE title is "Can-tina" and it's

4 written by Messrs.Burgess and Fuller.They could havefooled me. Cos Ithink it should be

called "There Is A Tavern In TheTown".

A frog asks at the start "Is Therea cantina in the town?" And fromthe other side of the swamp, a saxo-phone brays idto the first chorus andnearly retches the end before col-lapsing with reed trouble. Then Spanish -style guitar -style, yet.

Seriously, they've done precisely thisbefore and it has been a big hit."Tequila" and "Subway", for instance."Panic Button" could easily be thetheme for a late -night telly crime series.In this field, it's a good record.

CLIFF ADAMS' SINGERS Lullabyof Birdland; Tumbling Tumbleweeds(Columbia DB 4709)

CLIFF, happily re-covered from his

recent illness, hasboosted his followingthrough television ap-pearances. The ever-green "Lullaby of

Birdland " gels a tremendously enjoy-able treatment, featuring in the mainCliff's piano in both old and newstyles. The singers are virtually gap -fillers.

I enjoyed this a lot."Tumbling Tumbleweeds," too,

comes in for a bright treatment, thoughslow of pace. Whistling, singing, sadpiano alternate. On second thoughts,though, perhaps this one is too slow-paced, too musically relaxed.

DUANE EDDY Caravan (Parts Oneand Two) (Parlophone R 4826)

THIS starts off withMr. Eddy leading

the caravan outthrough his echochamber on to thedesert sands. Andwhile you're turning

over to Part Two, some violent rockmusicians join the procession. Thereseems to be a running battle betweenDuane, the musicians and the tune.Compatability is established in theend, Mr. Eddy disappearing back intohis echo chamber.

Why Parlophone? Because Duanerecorded this several years ago. It is athoroughly commercial version of theclassic Duke Ellington -Juan Tizol piece.Part Two is the side which is most likelyto click.

TOMMY SANDS Love In A Gold-fish Bowl; I Lost My Baby (CapitolCL 15219)

YOUNG TOM hasnever really been

big in Britain and I'venever understoodwhy. Perhaps thetrouble is that thisparticular gold-

fish bowl is overstocked. It's all toobusy. Girls, saxes, strings, wordylyrics . . - everything is happening atonce. But Tommy does sing very wellindeed.

He's certainly happy in the flip andfor that earns my undying gratitude.Again, he sells the song with confidentprofessionalism - and the song. new ornot, has the reat vaudeville flavour toit. I loved but I wonder about theyounger lotl

LAURIE JOHNSON Sucu Sucu;Echo Four -Two (Pye N 15383).

LAURIE introducesan intriguing com-

bination of sounds,featuring big brassand small guitar. Avery professional,well -ordered version

of the haunting Latin theme from the"Top Secret" television series featur-ing astute use of a harp, as well.

The fans are already going for "SucuSucu" but I'm much more impressedwith the dramatics and tingling powerof Laurie's own composition "EchoFour -Two". I just hope it doesn't getoverlooked, that's all. because it isabsolute top -class big band material.Isn't it something like "Night Train"?Good trombone and trumpet solo work,too.

THE DRIFTERS Sweets For MySneer: Loneliness or Happiness(London HLK 9427).

THIS just isn't upto the best stand-

ards of the Drifters.even though there issomething strangelycompelling about theknocked -out piano on

"Sweets For My Sweet", a Pomusand Shuman composition. Again, ithas done well in the States. Severalof the Drifters appear to have takenthe afternoon off.

The other side is a doomv piece witha bass drum beaten at irregular inter-vals as a sort of death -call omen. Bothnumbers, in fact, have little productiontricks which stick firmly in the memory.And let's face it, that's more than halfthe battle these days. Not quite a TopTwenty Tip - Top Fifty, yes.

JESS CONRAD Every Breath 1

Take; Walk Away (Decca F 11394)

POSSIBLY the mostadventurous Con-

rad so far - that'sthe verdict on "EveryLittle Breath". It hasJess moaning outthe title repititiously

backed by Ivor Raymonde's stringsand a drum figure that is featuredthroughout the track. Not much of atune to be sure, but it could sell onthe catchy title riff.

It's true, by the way, Jess doesfeature a lot of breathing.

Flip has Jess almost walking his waythrough the lyric backed by a fussyrhythm and chorus. Routine.

CATCHY CONRAD DRAKETHE ORIGINAL

A BRASS - HAPPYbash at the theme

Flip, -Stranger Than Fiction", is cer-tainly strange. Or wierd, perhaps, is thebetter word. A swingalong orchestralpiece, it is hardly likely to bother ..ourmemory a few minutes after beingplayed.

THIS is best des-cribed as an

original Aboriginal.There's trouble in thetribe because thechief's son, Chas.,just can't make his

boomerang come back. He practices

. breaking off only for "a naive cupof tea".

Good comedy. Plus spasms of sing-ing from Charlie which suggest hecould be very, very good. Of course,his boomerang WOULD come back ifonly he'd throw the perishin' thing first!

A slab of music -hall on the flip -also written by Chas. and MaxDiamond. But ending with them "[rad-fadding like hooligans".

TED TAYLOR Cat's Eyes; Canyon(Oriole CB 1628)

"CAT'S EYES" isthe latest episode

in Mr. Taylor's flirta-tion with road traffichis first disc was"Ml" - and is afaster rocker based

loosely on a well-known blues theme.In fairness Ted and his quartet, resi-

dent in London, do manage to soundlike those American groups that makethe charts over here.

"Canyon" is slower tempo, moreWestern flavoured. It has enough varia-tion to keep things interesting.

PINKY AND PERKY What's NewAt The Zoo?; Dream Your TearsAway (Columbia DB 4710)

THOSE lovable pig-lets natter through

the novelty item fromthe stage show "DoRe Mi" - a number,incidentlly, alreadydisked by Max By -

graves, star of the show. The linkpieces are put over in human voiceby Pony Tanner.

It's difficult to assess the chances ofa disc of this type. If it gets big, every-body is astonished. But . . .

Anyway, I found it very entertaining.The flip, too, is bright, breezy and nottoo twee.

TONY OSBORNE Mexico; SanPaolo (HMV Pop 921)

fiVER the years,Tony has built

up enormous sales,though not suffi-ciently week -by -weekto get the Top Twentyprestige he deserves.

But few leaders can create an atmos-phere like Tony does so consistently.

"Mexico " is a fine example. Even ifyou have never visited Mexico, you havethe feeling that the composition is justright. Tony didn't write this side, buthis "San Paolo' is his own work andfeatures his own piano styling,

Either side could turn up regularlyin "Housewives' Choice" and similarshows.

They'll sell, of course. And over along period. But I didn't know therewas any sort of single market for this"dancers -only" material.

HANK LOCKLIN You're TheReason; Happy Birthday To Me(RCA 1252)

Two late starters are Barry Mann and the Vis-counts, with "Who Put The Bomp", both versionsshowing strongly, even though they have beenreleased some weeks now.

Watch out for the Dale Sisters with their "MySunday Baby", which just missed the charts thisweek, despite the fact that it hasn't been heard muchon the teenage record programmes.

Another who just missed was Mike Berry with hiscontroversial "Tribute To Buddy Holly", and thisdisc is being given maximum exposure, so it couldeasily make it next week.

But she's in the Top Twenty with" You'll Answer To Me " - whethershe likes it or not ! It's been describedby top critics as one of the finestvocal performances of recent years.

What made it a hit ?Persistent plugging by dee-jay fans

of Cleo, of course. Plus the easy -to -remember melody and lyrics wayabove the usual moronic level.

Cleo was the first British singer con-tracted to an American company to makeLPs.

Cleo was the first British girl to befeatured by the U.S. Government -spon-sored "Voice Of America" radio show,with 38 million listeners.

Cleo was the first jazz singer to starin opera -ballet --in "The Seven DeadlySins" at the Edinburgh Festival, thisyear. And went with the production toSadler's Wells.

Some of this makes her sound stuffy ...high -brow. In fact, Cleo has a fine senseof comedy as fans saw when she tackleda cod poetry -reading bit at the RoyalFestival Hall recently.

She was born in 1927. Her familysuffered in the depression of the 1930's.But she didn't need money to join inwith the Salvation Army on street -cornetmeetings -41d with them, she learned tosing.

In show busines, she started at 12-asan extra in "The Thief of Bagdad". But,after school, she dabbled widely indifferent jabs-hairdressers' apprentice,library assistant, sales girl, shoe -repairer.

But it was in a British Legion Hall inSouthall that her vocal career reallystarted. She sang a sung, a young bassist

heard her and got her an audition withthe then new boy of British jazz, JohnnyDankworth.

And, of course, she married the leaderof the band.

Right now, Oleo is having what is, forher, a rest. That means a number ofregional television shows, the odd broad-cast, the odd personal appearance-andlullaby -crooning (unpaid) to the juniorDankworth at their fine home.

WHERE NOW?But she scored a big success on "Sun-

day Night At The London Palladium"last week on the Sammy Davis Jur. bill-and probably ensured an even higherplacing for the haunting "You'll AnswerTo Me".

Johnny Dankworth, too, hardly woosthe Hit Parade. But earlier he has his"African Waltz" orchestral piece in thecharts - and it sold well over a longperiod. Again, he found his success with-out in any way lowering his standards.

Where to now, for Cleo? The bigpoint is that she has established herselfwith the younger element. They are nowaware of her and her big, swinging voice.This could lead to continued commercialsuccess.

But there are so many sides to herpersonality. She wants to act in worth-while productions. She wants to continuestinging and is convinced she can com-bine the twos

Yes, everything is happening to Cleo,the girl who had it pretty rough duringher early years but learned to LIVE.Even bigger and greater honours are onthe way for her-and fully deserved, too.

DRIFTERS (below).: But in Britain they must be the most inconsistent. Their last bigse hit was "Save The Dance For Me."

In the States, it topped the Chartse over here it reached No. 2.

Since then The Drifters have hada: numerous hits in America: " I:a Count The Tears," " Some Kind Ofa: Wonderful," " Please Stay," and:a their most recent offering, "Sweetsa: For My Sweet," which is to be re-: leased in Britain this Friday.a: All of these reached the U.S. Top

groups, Stateside, are THE

Twenty. Not one reached the Britishcharts. The most successful in termsof disc sales was " I Count TheTears."

A debatable point is whether ornot the breaking away of ex -leadvocalist BEN E. KING had anyeffect on their sales in this country.

For Ben was the lead on all of theDrifters' hits in this country.

Since he left the group he has hadseveral solo hits in Britain andAmerica including " Spanish Har-lem "/" First Taste Of Love and" Stand By Me." Plus the fact thathis latest, "Amor," was showing verystrongly last week.

But the style on their discs hasn'tchanged, even though the personnelhas.

The group was founded in 1953,and comprised completely differentartists, from the present day. Lead

voice was Clyde McPhatter, and itwas as a showcase for his talent thatthe combo had been founded.

Tenor was Gerhart Thrasher, basswas Bill Pinkey, while baritone washandled by Charlie Hughes.

When Clyde joined the Army,Johnny Moore took over the lead,and on his demob, Clyde branchedout on his own, to make discs like"A Lover's yuestton " and " ThinkMe A Kiss."

CHANGETheir U.S. hits while with

these first two lead vocalistswere numerous. They included" White Christmas," "Ador-able," " Soldier Of Fortune,""Such A Night," "WithoutLove," " Steamboat," " Ruby,Baby," and " Treasure OfLove." Their first record was" Money, Honey," and was theirfirst hit for the Atlantic label,their present company.When Johnny Moore relinquished

the lead to Ben E. King, TheDrifters made their first millionseller, " There Goes My Baby."After this, they notched up hits bothin Britain and America. There was"Dance With Me," " This MagicMoment," and " Lonely Winds."

The personnel changed rapidly,and when Ben left the group, theline-up was Charles Thomas, lead,Ellsbury Hubbs (at present in theU.S. Army), Doc. Green, RudyLewis, and Tommy Evans. This isthe present line-up and it seems bytheir successful discs one they willkeep to.

Successful in the States, that is.Things could be much better disc -wise in England for the group, andit is difficult to see why their recordsare not hits over here. All are wellmade, and have that certain some-thing that makes hit tunes. All areplugged extensively, and, perhaps themost important factor, all are hitsin America.

Perhaps " Sweets For My Baby "will bring back their name to theTop Twenty, if not, The Drifters willjust have to try and try again.

RHYTHM 'N' BLUESByJAMES CRAIG

BACK to RAY CHARLES againthis week. For some reason two

of our major companies have seenfit to issue a single each by Ray.

HMV with "Hit The Road Jack"obviously stand the best chance becausetheir disc has zoomed up the Americancharts and is rated as the biggestCharles seller so far.

I wonder why. To start with I thinkthe Raylettes backing group should havegot equal billing on this medium tempospiritualish number. It sounds somewhatakin to the pseudo -religious ditties thatWoody Herman used to specialise in.

"1 Wonder Who" is the London label'scontribution to the Charles' scene. Thisis a slow tempo blues that gives fullscope to Ray's gymnastic vocal ability.It has an authentic backing, small group,lots of Charles' piano. Nice but not com-mercial.

Other side of this disc, "Hard Times"features Ray in reflective and possiblyautobiographical mood. Again is slowand has Ray just backed by piano andsmall group. Reasonable saxophone,

probably Fathead Newman intrudes. Rayscrews himself up with excess of emotiontowards the end.

But the oddity of the four tracks isthe flipside of "Hit The Road"-"DangerZone". This leads me to one conclusion:that Ray would have been sitting inTrafalgar Square the other weekend.

Sample line in the song: "World is inan uproar, danger zone is everywhere."Followed by: "That's why I'm afraid ofthe progress that's been made/Towardseternity."

LONG SERVICEIt's slow and obvious Ray must feel

this way because a more uncommercialside would be hard to imagine.

I read with delight that two r and bsides did considerable long service in theAmerican charts. Bobby Lewis' "Tocsin'And Turning" is one-in the US 100 fornigh on 23 weeks including a No. 1 spot,The other disc is "I Like It Like That"by Chris Kenner which stayed for 17weeks. One American observer (in Bill-board) wrote: "If the tendency continuesit could be regarded as a sort of return tothe era of the great days of r and b re-cords. Naturally I hope so. BecauseAmerican tastes-despite a pro BritishTap Ten-is still reflected a great dealover here.
