Welcome from the DirectorWelcome back! Or, if you are new to OLLI, welcome! The fall is a great time

to take a class. Peruse through this catalog and you will find a diverse repertoire of over 100 intellectually stimulating, non-credit courses and educational activities, specifically designed for people just like you. These include dine and discover outings with a local chef, art tours, courses to help you avoid the Flu, day hikes and a number of trips and tours to destinations in and around the state. Our curriculum committee has worked very hard to recruit expert instructors, many of whom work for free, and assemble a diverse list of programs that I am certain you will find intriguing and exciting.

Participants of OLLI are offered membership options that include a number of great benefits as well as significant opportunities for volunteer engagement and leadership. If you would like to go beyond our course offerings you might want to check out our monthly social activities and special interest groups or consider volunteering on a committee or as a class ambassador. These extra activities for our members are a great way to get involved, meet new people and shape the future of our programs.

No matter what you choose, I am certain you will find OLLI to be engaging, informative and fun, providing an ideal learning environment and unique experiences. When people talk about OLLI at the University of Arkansas, three things come to mind: lifelong learning, lifelong friendships and endless opportunities. I look forward to your involvement in OLLI this fall and in the semesters beyond.

Your membership and participation in OLLI is greatly appreciated and valued! Sincerely,Josh Raney, Director

Josh Raney, OLLI Director

All About OLLI

Welcome to the Osher Lifelong Learning Instituteat the University of Arkansas!OLLI at the University of Arkansas was established in 2007. It is one of 123 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the United States, and is the only OLLI in the state of Arkansas. OLLI courses enrich my life. I feel

blessed that we have them available here in Fayetteville.

Thank you.

OLLI gives me an

opportunity to explore new topics that I did not have time

to explore while I was still working.

Osher Institutes are volunteer driven organizations! Our volunteers and committees are vital to the success, quality and sustainability of the institute’s programs. Your time, talents, and resources are valuable and provide needed support. Volunteers are recogonized at the annual College of Education and Health Professions Honors Convocation and throughout the year in the OLLI newsletter.Volunteers are needed for the following:OLLI Course Ambassadors OLLI classes are held at various venues across the region making it di cult for our small sta to be at each location. Volunteering as a Course Ambassador is a great way to help our sta provide a quality experience for students and instructors. Course Ambassadors assist with signing in participants, introducing the instructors, and making program announcements. No skills or training are needed. All information needed to be a successful course ambassador will be provided to you and available at each classroom location. If you register and attend an OLLI program course consider being a course ambassador!OLLI Committee Member OLLI committees are the driving force behind our institute’s high quality courses, diverse membership and fun, unique programs. Currently the institute has four standing committees that need more volunteers:

CURRICULUM- This committee takes all the credit for shaping and developing the annual list of courses. Members of this committee meet monthly to discuss ideas for course topics and recruit instructors for facilitating the programs. If you have an idea for an OLLI course, this is the group that can make it happen! MEMBERSHIP- This committee has the opportunity to build a diverse and fun community of learners. Members of this committee meet monthly to develop and discuss ideas for outreach opportunities. They also assist in implementing marketing strategies to promote OLLI program and membership benefits. SOCIAL- The social committee is a group that enjoys having fun and meeting new people. They meet monthly to come up with new and fun ways for OLLI members and students to connect outside of courses. Whether it’s dancing, drinks or games, this group gets it organized. ADVISORY COUNCIL- The Advisory Council represents the membership of OLLI and assures coordination and strategic direction for OLLI. Working closely with the OLLI director and sta , the council establishes long-range plans and goals for the institute and ensures that programs are created to accomplish them. This group advises on policies, procedures, and guidelines for the program with the oversight of the OLLI director and the Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions.

OLLI Van Drivers OLLI is expanding its out and about programs with more day trips, tours and hikes. We will be taking participants to local and regional venues and need volunteers to drive passenger vans on these exciting and fun adventures. Driving a van is a great way to experience OLLI activities and to participate in these programs for FREE!If you have interest in being a part of an OLLI committee contact us today! To volunteer or for more details, contact the OLLI o ce at (479)575-4545 or email us at [email protected].

THE NUCLEAR OPTION TOUR OF NUCLEAR ONE GENERATION PLANT IN RUSSELLVILLEDESCRIPTION: Nuclear One’s iconic hyperbolic cooling tower can be seen for miles alongside Lake Dardanelle. The unit is one of Entergy’s nine nu-clear power facilities; it went on line in May, 1974, with Unit #1, followed by Unit #2 in 1978. Nuclear One pro-vides 56% of the total energy demand from Entergy Arkansas’s 700,000 cus-tomers. Its opening jump-started Ar-kansas’ use of nuclear power for elec-tricity generation, providing a clean alternative to fossil fuels. (Since 9/11, tours of U. S. energy-related facilities such as power plants, hydroelectric dams, and nuclear facilities have been severely curtailed.) OLLI participants will be given an educational guided tour of the Nuclear One plant, includ-

SCIPIO AFRICANUS JONES, BOTH INTELLIGENT AND WISEDESCRIPTION: There is much talk about the Elaine Massacre of 1919 and there will be much more before the last weekend of September this year. Patri-cia Taylor Kienzle has been conducting volunteer activities in Elaine since 1998 but didn’t know any of the history for about 7 years. A grant from the Black History Commission allowed her to write a book, suited for 4th grade stu-dents and older, about a hero from that history, Scipio Jones. A Black Hall of Fame grant allowed Ms. Kienzle to pro-duce a poster for high school students and adults. This class will include some of the his-tory with a dierent focus than one may have seen before. It will also give some insight into the community that those going to Elaine for interviews, lming, etc. may not get. There will be informa-tion about the Lee Street Community Center and how Fayetteville residents contribute to its activities. There just might be a bingo style game with priz-

THAT’S COOL: THE MUSICAL INNOVATION THAT BROUGHT JAZZ BACK INTO THE MAINSTREAM OF AMERICAN LIFEDESCRIPTION: The Swing Era, the most popular period for jazz in America, ended around the nish of World War II. In its place came a new hard-driving, impro-visational style called Be-Bop. A complex music, Be-Bop was short on singable melodies, hard to follow, and nearly im-possible to dance to. As a result, and in conjunction with the rise of rock and roll, jazz began to fall from favor and was at risk of being classied as something quaint from the past.Starting with the iconic Miles Davis LP entitled Birth of the Cool, and other re-leases by Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, and the Modern Jazz Quartet, a new excite-ment was generated in the 1960s on col-lege campuses across America. Jazz was back in a big way and many credit the Cool style with saving the art form of jazz from extinction. The class will focus on the unique players who made this phe-nomenon happen as well as listening to examples of their music.INSTRUCTOR: Gary Barrow, Ret.

BE A TREE: GREEN CEMETERY MODELS FOR THE NATURAL STATEDESCRIPTION: An often overlooked component of land use planning and design is sufficient cemetery space for the number of residents in the area. Green space within our communities is becoming scarce, and urban sprawl continues to devour our woodlands and natural habitats. Vickie Kelley, the founder and current president of the Natural State Burial Associa-tion, will share how an earth burial in a conservation cemetery can be an environmentally sustainable so-lution. The lack of affordable burial plots, combined with the high cost of a conventional funeral, has led to an increased demand for cremation.

Rather than accepting this highly pol-luting alternative, as offered by the modern funeral industry, NSBA pro-vides information on the resurgence of home funerals and green burials. They offer guidance and help with this completely legal, deeply spiritual, and economically accessible alterna-tive.INSTRUCTOR: Vickie Kelley, Founder/

I HAVE A RIGHT TO A PREVIEW OF THE ONE BOOK/ONE COMMUNITY SELECTIONDESCRIPTION: Participants will pre-view major issues developed in Chessy Prout’s book, I Have a Right To: a High School Survivors’ Story of Sexual Assault, Justice and Hope. This book is the Uni-versity of Arkansas’s One Book/One Community selection for 2019. Prout was sexually assualted at the age of 15 while a student at a prestigious New England boarding school in 2014. In I Have the Right To, she tells her story again, in often wrenching detail - but she also looks forward in the book - advocating for a cultural change and a “Bill of Rights” for sexual assault sur-vivors. Prout will visit Fayetteville on October 24.

IN DEFENSE OF SOCIALISM: A DISCUSSION OF SOCIALISM AND “SOCIALIST” PROPOSALSDESCRIPTION: “Just a good old-fashioned, state-planned economy, garden-variety 20th-century social-ism. Our Democratic colleagues have taken all the debunked philosophies of the last hundred years, rolled them into one giant package, and thrown a little ‘green’ paint on them to make them look new.” Senator McConnell. Socialism is sometimes equated with totalitarianism or communism. “So-cialism is communism, only better English.” George Bernard Shaw. These kinds of statements and the recent blizzard of articles lead to a conclusion that socialism and so-called socialist policies will be a ma-jor issue in the 2020 election. OLLI participants might be particularly interested. Less than a third of voters who are 65 and older have a positive view of socialism in Gallup polling from August 2018. That number has remained steady since 2010. Positive views of socialism among 18-29 year-olds are much stronger at a steady 50% or so since 2010. Support falls successively with each older genera-tion. (41% positive among the Millen-nial age group and 30% among the Generation X age group.) The course is a presentation of socialism and so-cialist labeled policies with examples and problems. Max enrollment is 18.

ARMENIA - THE OTHER 20TH CENTURY GENOCIDEDESCRIPTION: The Armenian nation represents an ancient people who made (and continue to make) a sig-nificant contribution to world history. Armenia has existed as a nation for millennia and was the first to formally adopt Christianity as a state religion. The nation figured into the long and complicated strife between Rome and Persia. Later, Armenia was on the fore-front of the Bolshevik advance into the Caucasus region. The prominent position of Armenian businessmen and intellectuals in Ottoman days produced a jealous response within the more backward “Mountain Turk” population of the declining empire. That was the basic cause of what we know as the Armenian genocide, al-though the extent of official complic-ity is still hotly debated. Even so, we know that a secret organization head-quartered in Boston systematically sought out and assassinated those Turkish officials thought responsible. These stories and more will be illus-trated by photos made by Fred Paillet,

IN GOD’S POCKET: THE HISTORY OF OUR LADY OF THE OZARKS SHRINEDESCRIPTION: In God’s Pocket: The History of Our Lady of the Ozarks Shrine presents the remarkable story of the only Catholic shrine in Arkan-sas. It tells how visionaries led by a former nun came together in their quest to build both a home for the

Blessed Sacrament and a shrine dedi-cated to the Mother of God. Through its uncertain beginnings and the of-ten challenging years that follow, the sturdy native stone chapel continues to welcome people of all faiths to its tranquil and scenic place. To tell the Shrine’s story, authors Mary Ann Kahmann and Juana Young draw upon historic photos, documents, and artifacts recovered and discovered from parish and diocesan archives, as well as the memories and attics of area residents. The authors also relate some of the adventures they had in writing this unique history. The class will be held at Ozark Folkways, an organization dedicated to the pres-ervation, development, instruction, and celebration of regional arts and crafts, located next door to the Catho-lic Shrine. Students will tour both fa-cilities, before a Dutch Treat lunch at nearby “Grandma’s House Cafe”. Time stated includes travel time.INSTRUCTOR: Mary Ann Kahmann and

This summer, the College of Education and Health Professions at the U of A welcomed a new dean, Brian Primack.

Dr. Primack holds the Henry Hotz Endowed Chair and has a conjoint appointment with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine as professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Community Health.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Aairs Jim Coleman said Dr. Primack’s background in the elds of education and medicine makes him uniquely qualied and a natural t to lead COEHP.

“He has a great vision to expand the college’s role as a major academic resource for the state and the nation in K-12 education, meet the growing demands for health professionals in Arkansas, and expand

important research and collaboration in both health and education,” Coleman added.

Dr. Primack comes to Fayetteville from the University of Pittsburgh, where he most recently served as the dean of the Honors College. He had been the director of the Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health since 2014. Dr. Primack’s research at Pitt for more than a decade focused on technology and health outcomes as they relate to emerging adults. This work led to him being interviewed by a variety of media outlets – from NPR to the New York Times — about the connection between technology use and emotional health, like depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Over the past 15 years, he has amassed over 250 scholarly publications and has a forthcoming book about best practices around social media.

Dr. Primack graduated from Yale University magna

cum laude in 1991 with degrees in English and mathematics. After teaching in West Africa for a year, he returned to the U.S. and received his master’s degree in education from Harvard University. During this time, he also served as dean of students at a large summer program for teens. He subsequently accepted a full scholarship to Emory Medical School, from which he graduated rst in his class in 1999.

Dr. Primack’s hobbies revolve around music. He plays guitar and piano and also writes music. He’s also interested in theater and did work as a professional actor after college. In Pittsburgh, he started an improvisation group for kids and teens.

To connect with Dr. Primack, you may call his oce at 479-575-3208. For more information about the College of Education and Health Professions, visit coehp.uark.edu.
